    Thanks for your encouragement Linda. Like you, I kind of fell into how to hold the yarn with my left hand on my own. After 40+ years, it still works! I'm glad the videos help. Have a wonderful 2013!

    This is such a lovely stitch/pattern and not at all difficult. I caught-on right away. It also gives great clarity as to how other crochet designs are made that I would otherwise never attempt. It's definitely on my to-do list for a couple pillows. I also have crocheted 40+ yrs and have always used the same style of holding my hook and work. Recently I taught a small grp of ladies the basics of crochet and they preferred the same method. Thanks again for the great tutorial!

    You hold your hook just like I do! Never saw anyone do that before! I taught myself when I was very young, probably less than 10. My mother had a way of wrapping the thread around her fingers, and I could never do that. So I just figured out myself. Glad I found your videos, I'm a visual learner, and just go to your videos whenevver the written directions are too confusing. I can pick up the stitch in minutes!

    I love all your videos. I'm relatively new to crochet and seem to learn new stitches better from videos. I like the little extras, stitch count plus *. For instance, this is a one sided pattern. First row is work on the right side. I'm using many of your videos to help me learn stitches used in an afghan I'm currently making as a wedding gift. Thank you so much.

    I would use a multiple of 4, but be sure to use 2 border dcs at the beginning and end of the rows. I can't give you an exact number because I don't know how wide you desire it to be, or the yarn type and needle size. Once you determine your gauge and size, pick the number that is the closest to a multiple of 4, and then add the number of sts necessary for the turning chain. I hope this helps a little!

    WOW!!! Thank you!!! I stumbled across this stitch in a Spanish language video and have spent the last 4 hours scouring the web and UA-cam for an English version and to know what it's actually called... your video is brilliant... how you explain/show every move and where... I am very comfortable with the basket weave and cables so this is just the next step. It's a beautiful stitch... so, thank you so much for this video. I hope all is well!!! - Lu

    Believe me, they do! And sometimes multiple times. Often the designer doesn't get the final look and that's where I've encountered some problems with my patterns. On behalf of all designers I plead for your understanding and grace here. We are only a part of this whole process. This is why I share these free videos. : )
    Have you read a newspaper lately? You'll find mistakes everyday if you look for them. I guess as long as we humans are doing the work this will happen.

    I'm making the Red Heart Holiday Cables Throw for my daughter in the color Grape Jam. I just noticed that it was designed by you! I had trouble with the written directions for this part of the afghan. I saved it, and when I showed it to her, she loved it immediately, and wanted me to make it for her in a purple color. It's coming out nicely. I love the yarn, and the pattern is challenging and fun to do, because it has different sections. Thanks!!

    Thanks for the lesson. I tried to incorporate the pattern into the hat I'm working on, but whether my skill isn't up to par or the type of yarn I'm working with didn't lend itself well to the pattern I decided to go with a nice shell pattern. But I'll keep this stitch in mind and try to work it into a future project.

    Aha!!! Thanks for this video! a pattern I'm working on for a crochet aran style blanket/throw is calling for the celtic weave stitch, and every time I tried to do it following their instructions, I didn't get the woven effect, it was just continuous lines, and I figured out why--on the second row, it calls for working in FRONT of the stitches just made when you make the crossing stitches, but in order to achieve this woven effect you have to work BEHIND the stitches on the second row.

    • @BonnieBayCrochet
      @BonnieBayCrochet  7 років тому +1

      Sorry about that Carla. Perhaps you can take another look at these stitches in a week or so, then they might become more clear. I know the knurl - for whatever reason - seems to be more challenging to the more experienced crocheter. This could be because it is all so backwards! I encourage crocheters on that stitch to just let the strands fall as they may, and don't try to control that. If you keep normal tension, this stitch comes along with some practice.
      Blessings,

    I just found out that it is!!! It's the "Red Holiday Cables Throw" It's such a beautiful pattern! So far the celtic weave part is the only part with an error in it, everything else was well explained and super easy. Maybe you could go in and edit that part? I don't know if this makes any difference but I am a left handed crocheter, is that possibly why the instructions on that didn't work for me? Doesn't seem like it would matter, but I don't know.

      Dear eastonga101,
      Thanks for your kind encouragement! I actually developed this stitch several years ago (first appeared in "Aran Afghans to Crochet" published in 2010 - Leisure Arts), and many have made their versions since then. To answer your question, this stitch is a multiple of 4 + 1. The "+1" is to compensate for needing to skip the first stitch of the row. I usually work a hdc or dc in the turning chain at the end of the row. In addition to the above mentioned leaflet, I also have a couple of other books & leaflets available, and one due out this fall. Oh Bonnie; You just may imagine why I'm here. I am happy to have found the creator of this stitch pattern. FINALLY a clear answer. The vid I watched (mind you I'm an experienced crocheter) was so long and had these fptc beginning in front... got it. Then she wanted us to do fptc behind but brought in between and with no chaining brought over to begin the next set. Something told me further investigation was needed especially since we weren't given a stitch multiple. No starting my prayer shawl without that. So I see yours are all worked in front in row one. Which base row do you prefer if I add a border? Maybe not since it's this kind of pattern? I'm open for suggestions Bonnie, I'm using Caron Simply Soft in Off White. I plan on wearing it over my dress at my own garden wedding in spring. I'm 64. We've known each other over 24 years. If you think another pattern would be better for this occasion I'm open. I trust you. Bless you sweet lady.

      Thank you Lynda! I believe any multiple of 4 + 1 will work on this stitch. I would start with a base row of double crochet. I do have many shawl patterns using this stitch and others. The screen on my android isn't showing the 3 dots you speak of with a wheel below to slow down the video... I'm feeling kind of stupid at this point because I've been crocheting since I was 6 (76 now), I've ripped out my 2nd row 5 times now because it just doesn't look like your beautiful work. What to do??

    • @BonnieBayCrochet

      Perhaps 20? This stitch works well with multiples of 4 plus the turning chains and the number of stitches that start and end the row. If you start by working in the 3rd chain from hook, an even multiple of 4 will work.

    Bonnie, I am still working on the 1st part of the colorful cables throw, I have been working on the celtic weave for days and days and just can't get it, I have looked at several demos, I just ended up tearing out 7 rows again because somehow I am losing stitches, Lots of them. Is there a different pattern I can replace it with? Its giving me a headache. Maybe I am to old to learn new tricks, lol

      Can you send me some photos of a small swatch? If you can do that, I may be able to see what is going on so you can do this. You can send a photo to me at bonniebay@me.com. Otherwise, you can always use a variation of the basketweave (change the number of multiples?).

    Hi Bonnie,
    I hope you get this message even though this video is quite old now. I bought your book, Contemporary Celtic Crochet, and I attempted to make the Kells cabled sweater. (I should have prefaced this with 'I still consider myself a beginner/intermediate crocheter'.) Anyway, after many attempts, I kind of got a sweater, which I love, but: the arms are too long and the neckline is too big (it keeps falling off my shoulders). Do you have any suggestions as to how I can remedy this? I don't want to undo it at all (I made it with my pug by my side; she passed away last year and it's very, very precious to me). I have thought about putting elastic around the inside of the neckline, or sewing a chain of double crochet stitches on the inside, across the back. Do you have any creative ideas that could help? Thank you so much.

    • @BonnieBayCrochet
      @BonnieBayCrochet  Рік тому +1

      Hi LH! I would try working a row of slip stitches around the collar using a smaller sized hook. This should take a lot of the elasticity out of this so it won't fall off the shoulders. Thank you for your kind support!

      I believe I was using a size I (or 9/5.50 mm) on this stitch, but I would encourage you to experiment with different size hooks with the yarn you choose in order to get the effect you desire. That is so cool that you have Celtic wedding rings! God's blessings on your new life together!

    Actually, this pattern was re-written by text editors, problems crept in (designer had nightmares over this), and another amazing editor helped me get it straightened out. All this to say, you may be using the older version. Just be sure you are using the latest corrected version and the problems may have already been magically fixed. Just a day in the life of a crochet designer. This is not unusual and most publishing companies keep an "errata" or correction listing for their patterns.

    • @BonnieBayCrochet

    • @BonnieBayCrochet
      @BonnieBayCrochet  10 років тому +3

      Dear Rae Anne,
      You can begin this stitch on sc or dc, but dc will be easier to learn at first. This can be worked over any multiple of 4 plus 1 if you work in the turning chain at the end of the row. For a beginning chain, choose a multiple of 4, and begin in the 4th chain from the hook when working your dc row. After that you are ready to begin your Celtic Weave row.
      Happy Easter! He is risen!

      Dear Wanda, that is an excellent question! Back in 2009 I developed this stitch and named it by my last name, hence the "Barker Celtic Weave". I was later blessed by being able to publish this afghan along with 4 others in a Leisure Arts leaflet entitled "Aran Afghans to Crochet", and the publishers shortened the name, dropping the "Barker" portion. Since then I have used this in my other published patterns and books. Many other UA-cam crocheters have picked up on this as you have noticed! I'm glad so many folks are enjoying this. Blessings, Bonnie Barker
