Thank you to everyone who's supported me in any way! 🙏
I'll support you either way I love all your videos Finn!!! I love rock and metal but I also like rap, country, pop, EDM Etc. Keep doing you man.
Thank you for your videos because of you, I love $uicideboy$, sleep token and parkway drive. I can't wait to see what you make next
For the record I enjoy all your content. Even not as popular ones like trap metal… it’s what got me into city morgue for example
Finn, you have to let yourself curate your audience. 87% is not THAT bad of a dislike ratio.
I say start exclusively making content that you're actually interested in, and others who are interested in that will follow eventually. You just have to be patient. Most of your audience, who loves no matter what you put out, will stick around.
The important thing is to let yourself be happy with what you're making. At the end of the day, it's YOUR channel. If you're burned out making material you don't want, then stop doing that! Anyone who doesn't understand that isn't worth your stress anyway. Selfish people will never be satisfied.
If that doesn't work, make another channel where you upload stuff that you're actually interested in, and occasionally keep posting to this one. Whatever you want, buddy. Personally, I'm here for the ride, whatever your endeavor is.
Thank you for all your videos and content!
I have a hard time finding new music...a series on "if you liked this band in 2001, try this new band" would be fun
oo that's a great idea!
Holy crap I would love that. Post college I stopped following heavy music closely and feel so lost in the genre now!
Dude, that's a wicked idea! 🙂 have you tried asking ai ?? "what bands are similar to ... " is what i'd ask 🙂
Yeah, but also Spotify and the such do that. It would be cool to find smaller undiscovered bands though
I dig this concept.
Finn if you're not going to pull back here are some ideas:
- worst lyrics of popular songs
- underrated musicians/songwriters
- music in tv, movies, video games
- a baddiecore explanation
- disney songs that don't suck
- past musicians that would be canceled by today standards
- beef in the rock world
- best songs to do things to (sex, skateboard, video games)
- explain how different level of musicians make their money
- a history of blue collar Punk (ex. Gaslight Anthem, hot water music, Social D, Menzingers)
GOAT
Outstanding suggestions
Solid 10 out of 10
dude these are stellar suggestions ✨️
beef in the rock world would be great
As someone who's been doing this for over 10 years (and definitely gotten the same kind of comments/panic attacks/etc) I totally get where you're coming from man. Try and remember to give yourself a pat on the back for how far you've come every once in a while. It's hard not to take it personally when its your whole being put into the content you make, you really care, and then something does poorly. But try not to let it get you down man. Love your content! Whatever you do I'm sure it'll be succesful. Personally, I love learning new stuff about the bands I love when you talk about them. And deep dives into the 90's 2000's are super nostalgic.
Your 2nd channel is AMAZING. When you inject your humour and personality, it's absolute gold. And I pay extra attention when you start talking about new music.
Totally agree. His vid from a couple weeks ago about farting at the party at high school was hysterical! Watched the vid twice
@@Frederick0220 I found out that I'm watching and enjoying his livestream snippets more than the MBA - specially the 2000's decade stuff that bring me a lot of cringe memories of my youth lol
Agreed, I watch almost every video on that channel he’s hilarious and so personable
Never commented on your vids before, but you're not alone, dude. Content creation is a different form of a 9 to 5 job. The mental pressure to produce is real, and I feel you on every point you made. For what it's worth I didn't sense any of this from your vids. Your opinions always come across so polished and insightful; honestly, I can probably speak for the silent majority when I say they're why I watch your videos! Hoping to see more in the future bro. 👊
Totally agree with this guy
I love your channel too! \m/
Finn, you are absolutely the only content creator covering music that has really ever held my attention and intrigue. You do quality stuff. I also think you do a great job of the yin and yang with the more fact based stuff on this channel, and the more fun off the wall stuff on your personal. With this channel in general maybe you can do the thing that some movie directors do: one for the studio, one for me. Keep it up and much love!
Music teacher here. I was talking to my kids about the scene back in the early 2000s when I realized how they don't really have anything equivalent. They'll never know what it's like to do watch a friend's band at some dive that's probably a crack house by day. Not sure if that's helpful, but there ya go!
Make a Weekly series thats about discovering new music and showcasing it. That would be a phenomenal tool for your viewers, and hell, you'll find some great new music, too!
I was thinking the same thing. I've been introduced to a bunch of great music from this channel.
I like this

This!
I really liked your lifestories, life advice, and how to overcome addictions. Those stories were the most relatable and felt the most genuine.
If you make more of those I would watch them all.
I agree I still go back and watch those a lot because they’ve helped me a lot
Yeah these videos are always great
Same
Agree!
The history and breaking down of metal genres are my favorite things you ever did. I’d love more stuff like that.
i've always loved your style Finn, and the more you put your personality into the videos, the more i liked em. i hate that the metrics just aren't there for it to make sense for you to do *your* thing *your* way, i really do get that 'worn down' feeling. but man, i wish it was different right there along side ya.
much love Finn!
You said a long time ago you wanted to make a video about how dubstep took a lot of the head banging fans and it never came out.
Also every single Minecraft gameplay intro ever
LOL I said the same thing when I first heard dubstep. It was half beats that one could headbang to
Kinda makes sense since Skrillex was like the pioneer of that shit and he was a vocalist from a post hardcore band before he did dubstep
I lost many a metalcore bandmates to dubstep
Came here to comment this exact thing
Finn. You are the Punk rock MBA. You are going thru what many artists go through everyday. Monetizing underground movements has always been difficult. This is why so many artists " sell out" The mainstream will always exist, and it is by nature historically close minded. Welcome to the club my friend. For the record, I like ya. 👍
When he said "Why would I put all this time and energy into making a video that nobody's going to watch?" I felt that
Yeah, after all the hours I put into fun little genre hoping Christmas music videos I did for years to all have less than 1000 views kills me.
"Do what YOU like" only ever takes you so far.
I had more feelings for: " _if the message is 'no please keep doing what you're doing, that's what we want' then that's cool too_ " reminded me of being in a abusive relationship and believing i deserved it
That line is basically my entire existence
I love your content Finn and I respect your opinion. I had no idea you were going through this. Also, congrats on your sub count. When I subbed you were under 10k and thought man this guy is underrated.
Thank you!
Being a small business owner and a hobbyist is not easy. Especially when there comes a time when you realize that work and passions do have some sort of separation, even if you believe that what you do for work is your passion, it does not always remain that way.
I would say, make a brand new channel that only supports the content that you personally enjoy doing and want to do. Keep the other channels, strictly for work. You can’t lose. It’s just a time sacrifice for your personal stuff, which sucks, but it’s the best way!
I’m only speaking for myself here, but you’re the only creator where i watch every video of yours even if im not interested in the topic you’re talking about. I hope you find your way finn❤
Same here! And I've been found myself more open to new music because I decided to watch videos about genres I had no interest/idea about.
Hes great and knows a lot on music for sure i dont agree with every take but i still like his vids and him as a person hes also very funny love his humor
Finn. I watch anything you send. You are so dang funny and I look forward to every time there is a notification for a new video. But, your family and self are number one with priorities. Thanks for all you do!
I second this
Same!
Sorry you're going through this Finn. My take is you need to make the vids you love and try monetize additionally elsewhere. The hours researching, scripting, filming, editing on something you don't totally enjoy... will eat away at your energy (for you, for fam, for other ideas). Appreciate you!
i second this as a person who, just like many others in the world, has to do a job he doesnt like that much just for the sake of providing to his family, but any time i have to put effort in it, especially mental effort, it just sucks because i'd be fighting with my mind so loud. Finn you clearly love to make videos, researching all of the stuff and putting yourself into it, it would be painful to do that for something you don't like... that is pretty sure brother. Hope you'll figure out and till that time i will keep watching and liking :D
Pretty much this. When your passion becomes your job, you end up depending on everything around it (in this case viewers for example) and start hating what you used to love, because you wrap it up with what you still do, which is not what you love at all. And cue the anxiety and existential dread. I can't imagine doing this publicly on top of that, where if you stay the same people will start whining that you're not original enough, and if you change you'll get the "it used to be better" comments. If you can afford it, I would recommend a very long break, figure out what else you could do to support your family that wouldn't destroy your well being, and come back, if you want to, on your own terms. Also you'd probably end up with less followers, but more in tune with the content you want to make.
A well respected musician gave a warning to my neighbour, a well respected local musician in his own right, as advice before recording "your relationship to your music will change drastically as soon as you _need_ something from it".
This!
love the channel and hope things start to pick up! Been huge fan for a long time now, and cant tell ya how much I have enjoyed the videos and found new music through your videos--even if you dont like the deftones lol. Thanks!
Love your content. Love your videos explaining history of bands or subjects. I think you have a great way of conveying information. Honestly most of the bands or history of genres I know a lot about (I’m old lol) but still love to watch. I think it’s great information for those who don’t know about it. I also like how you give your honest feedback about subjects or bands and don’t sugar coat it. Stay strong. Your voice is important and matters.
On another note, would love to see a video about Sepultura or the importance of Ozzfest but what ever videos you choose to do are always enjoyable and I’ll keep watching !🤘
One of my favorite aspects of this channel is that you've shown me a whole bunch of music I would have missed out on
Maybe a semi-regular video about new artists you've discovered or listening to atm? You're how I learned about people like Essenger, Bilmuri, and a handful of other artists. In fact you're among my main sources for discovering new music these days.
I commented something similar to this on the other video and Finn said he mostly listens to pop and country.
Thanks for the great video's! I really liked the video's in the past where you talked about the business and marketing side of the music industry. For example the Spotify video. Would be great to see more of that content in the future. Cheers!
Been a subscriber for a bit now on both channels, and follower on IG. I really like your take on your videos, and the content that you make. I think that’s what makes your channels different; is your honesty. I like that it is real, and not fabricated. Keep up the good work. Signed a continued watcher.
The what killed series should come back, if there are any genres left to cover that is….
Would love to! Just not sure what's left to cover.

@@tylermahaoney8138 Seems redundant considering that's pretty much what this, and his other video is.
Or talking to millennials who are in the game about the music and lifestyle which you grew up with and then try to reach an audience from all types. (It could be said better but that's on the top of my head)
Finn, as a product of the 90’s and 00’s, your first couple years of videos almost single-handedly got me into so many incredible bands - everything from ADTR to Waterparks to BMTH. I was lured in by the “what killed the genre” series and stuck around because I got educated on everything I had missed in my college and adult years. I miss learning about new music from you and getting your take on what’s going on in the rock music space.
Thank you for transparency. I’ve spent dozens of hours with you over the years but have never taken the time to tell you I appreciate you and think you’re amazing.
I second all of this
You’ve introduced me to so much music that I absolutely love, from Four Year Strong to City Morgue. Appreciate all the work you’ve put in over the years - and for many laughs along the way. Keep your head up!
I wish I could say, create another channel for you to release those "less popular" videos/subject matter but I know that takes more time on your part. When I first came upon your channel during the pandemic, I viewed you and your opinion as someone who was incredibly level headed, facts driven, informative and OPEN MINDED, which is so freaking rare these days. What you do for music and so many artists is amazing. In the past, you would have been considered a gatekeeper of sorts, but I think you are the keymaster (Ghostbusters reference). You opened up my mind to so many new genres that I never knew about and shared new information on bands and artists that I've followed for years that I didn't know about. All I can say is that I appreciate your work, your opinion and the value you bring. I don't have any particular ideas to share because I've enjoyed the output so far, but maybe others will help you discover some new and interesting topics to cover. Good luck
Wait you made a video on KPop?! The algorithm failed us. Going to watch that shit now bruh.
Same here, I haven't even seen it pop up. I bet the algorithm plays it safe.
tbh i dont even really watch this channel, but i watch pretty much every upload on your Finn McKenty channel. even tho those vids have been largely tier lists as of late, theyre still always so much fun, your sense of humor and the way you talk about subjects you enjoy is fucking awesome. i really enjoy it a lot. i think a lot of your fans watch you mostly for your personality specifically!!
i just made a longform comment before i scrolled and saw this one where i was saying the exact same thing and it's for the exact same reasons.
Haha its true I found myself watching more of his secondary Channel as well, cuz he's so funny, relatable & always gives good insight 😢
You said you were going to read the comments. So I'm going to take advantage and give you my perspective.
First of all, I'm from Argentina, and while I understand English, I'm not very good at writing it. This message is translated by Google, therefore, it may have some writing problems.
1- Difference between the two channels, the personal and Punk Rock MBA.
Personally, I like the Punk Rock MBA channel better: the videos have more production and the content is better structured, characteristics that the videos on the other channel do not have.
The name of the Channel, Punk Rock MBA, was the first thing that caught my attention, and I think where the first videos were directed.
The objective was to analyze and structure the way in which bands operate or how, in business terms, they serve their target audience, and they achieve it. It seemed like an excellent idea to me. For music NERDS, who don't want short videos, but want information about the bands and a different perspective, and the best thing I had was your opinion, which I always validate.
I think the idea of the Channel, referenced as MBA, is very good and interesting, it stood out among all the other content there is.
Your informative videos are 10 or more minutes long, therefore, your target audience is over 30 years old, consequently, it seems to me that I should attack it.
I like data and information. How the albums were recorded, who was the producer, what did he mean in certain songs, what mood existed at the time of recording the album, meaning of songs, etc.
2- Importance of your opinion.
It always seemed fundamental to me, in every channel, that the author's opinion on the topic he deals with is what makes it particular and different. Your opinions make you think.
3- Content proposal.
I find it interesting that you can recommend bands and give solid points as to why you think we should listen to them.
Today music is a commodity, all the songs sound the same and there are so many artists, it is difficult to distinguish which ones are worth it. I believe that today, the only thing that can make a difference is going to see them play live or, in your case, having them recommend you... and not songs! Albums worth it.
On the other hand, although - as you said - there in videos you make a summary of what Wikipedia says - for my part I did not know it - for me they are interesting and even more so when you add your opinion.
You could also give your opinion about the festivals or concerts that are taking place.
4- Interviews.
The interviews you did seem great to me! I always enjoyed them a lot.
5- Consultations on social networks.
Propose topics for people to vote on and choose topics for you to make videos on.
6- I don't like.
First and foremost, that you give so much importance to the haters. I understand that the number of views is important, but comments are useless when they are hateful. Focus on those who help you.
I also don't like the videos when you are streaming, they don't entertain me.
Hope this can help you!
i really enjoy your channel! i have learned alot about different music genra and the unknown\known artist who fill these musical types. you have alot of knowledge about the music land scape of today and yesterday.keep up the good work!
Your opinions and personality are what always made me come back to the channel when I first found it. I didn’t always agree with your takes, but you always at least had a good rationale for them and presented them in an entertaining way
I’ve always liked hearing you point out the influences of older bands on newer bands. For example, I hadn’t noticed how much a lot of modern metal seems to take from Linkin Park, but when you pointed it out it made a lot of sense. Maybe you could try doing a video series on pointing those similarities out to bridge the gap between nostalgia and new bands and maybe drive attention to newer music
I'm a very new subscriber, but basically the reason I subbed was actually for your opinions and actual experience in the punk/hardcore/metal scenes for basically all of the 2000s and 90s which as someone who wasn't around when a lot of these bands you talk about were big is pretty fascinating.
Nice gay flag

Appreciate the honesty. I love your channel and your general approach of taking investigative deep dives into subjects. 💙
Always love your stuff man. Late to the party but I discovered you when I had the flu and stuck with you since. How about combining your love for combat sports and music. The evolution of the training montage soundtrack :) so many good ones 😊
Hey Finn, firstly I think it's great that you're so open about all this. Burnout is real and having the pressure of supporting a young family is difficult. You're right, when there is livelihood at stake, you can't always follow your passion 100% of the time and a lot of people who aren't under pressure don't understand this. This sucks and you're not alone in this position.
I tune into your videos because I like your style, not because of the topic, but maybe for the masses you can find a balance "one for you, one for them" kind of thing. As for topics, maybe some topics that would resonate with your audience would be:
- how bands make money on tour and how it's different from the 90s/early 00s
- deep-dive videos on 80s alternative bands that influenced 90s/00s bands
- interesting takes on alternative music in different media (movies, video games, etc.)
- how marketing shaped music in the 90s and how it's different today
- submissions from viewers redesigning band logos and then rank them
- interviews with music industry people
I'm sorry to see you struggling. Your family is the most important thing, so do what you need to do, man. Thanks again for being yourself!
Man, your a good, likeable effective communicator, keep doing what you do bro......
This is actually my first time commenting, but your videos are awesome. I get the uncertainty that comes with running out ideas for (good) videos, and how that can make you feel like there's an end to your channel looming on the horizon. Much respect for all you do, man, you're an incredibly hard worker and always have some very cool insights into music. I know you've exposed me to a lot of incredible bands!
First off I really appreciate you taking such a brave step to be mentally transparent and vulnerable.
As far as your question about "what you should do" I think you first need to answer the question of what do you like then work backwards from there to try and make it something your audience is into. Im not a content creator but I do think that your true community are the people who are down for all the experiments you try because they're into this channel because of you not just the history.
Fantano's channel is an interesting case study with this. He makes a lot of different type of videos(on two separate channels) not just reviews and his audience for the most part is along for the ride. Although most of it is music related which leads me to the other point.
How to solve the "I want to make videos on other things im interested in" issue is to maybe make more channels for those topics.
You have business/investment video ideas start a channel for that (call it PRMBA-GrowUp or something), wanna do something with movies or games make PRMBA-NowInColor or something.
But you should only do these videos (and make these channels) if you have a lot to say about these topics not just to diversify the content.
Your opinions and anecdotes are a big part of the reason I subscribed to begin with and now watch your second channel. I understand your dilemma.
Some of my favorite topics you’ve discussed are the ones adjacent to music and focused on the scene’s culture.
It would be fun to see videos relating your other specialties (business/marketing/branding) to millennials who grew up and want to start a music adjacent business or a band. Would seem to fit with the channel name.
Regardless, looking forward to seeing what you create in the future 🤘
We love you Finn! I watch and enjoy ALL of your videos and totally respect and value your opinions.
Love your "strange history" series and we would love to hear your insight on graphic design (be it related to music or not). Cheers!
Really fricking love your work FInn! Wiki videos still work cause of your humor and besides, there are lots of people who know jack about the evolution of music, so it is so great to hear you talk about it
Just want to say that I'm incredibly grateful for you. You're a good man, a great father, and my favorite content creator of all time. You've always been a breath of fresh air for me.
What a nice looking family, good for you man!
super big fan of you in the channel I’ve been watching since I was a junior in high school (2019) and I’m about to graduate college next week which is crazy. I think it would be fun to see you review classic rock and metal albums and I know someone else mentioned it but new music recommendations would be really cool too
Love your videos, Finn. I hope you find what is satisfying and fulfilling for you. And personally I hope you decide to update the PRMBA Spotify playlist (yes, I do check it for new music)!
How about Finn's Fun Friday? Post whatever You like. I'd definitely watch.
There could be some mileage there, interspersing the content that isn't going to get the views in the short term so that it doesn't harm the channel, but maybe broadens who gets recommended to watch over the long term
There’s always the lazy “viewers comments” that he could start doing on Fridays. He could use it to call out the hateful comments
@@slayabouts it works for Ronnie Radke, it can work for Finn too!
Good suggestion. I like Coffee with Carl (Murawski) and SWOLA with Ola, which is kind of the same deal. What's coming out and top-of-head stuff.
@@InGrindWeCrust2010 only thing is Glenn Fricker posts his own viewers comments videos on Friday, so Finn might need to take Thurs or Sat. Although, I wonder how much audience overlap they actually have and whether it would matter; I might just be in the minority there
Fin, definitely a vulnerable moment . You may feel like you have plateaued when it comes to content creation. I think switching gears could benefit you . Think back to 90s nostalgia. What’s something that always caught the attention of the masses. Shows like “ making the band “ are due for a reboot. You could possibly ask local bands for submissions, share them on your channel, go to a live show and film it “ reality tv “ style . Interview the bands , share back stories and help them with what they may lack ? Branding opportunities, sound recordings or just using your audience to capture attention?
Could be a useful tool to discover new underground music . Help you get the ideas flowing again .
Be watching since 2018 and I’ve also noticed the episodes are missing that spark. You are going through the motions to make content because it’s your main income vs doing it because you just loved it . Much love from Pennsylvania 🤙🏻 keep your head up
This actually sounds like a great idea. Kind of back to your roots kind of thing, but with modern music. As a millennial I also don't really know anything about the "scene" nowadays ie. I'm old enough that what kids do and are interested in is foreign and scary to me. Some content about that could be very interesting if done right.
Absolutely love everything you've done man, the crowd pleasers and the side quests. As a musician and music fan, I always get something out of it, even if I disagree with some takes. Balance is probably the best approach, 2 for the audience, 1 for you, or something like that. You've been super prolific, maybe a little holiday and down time is the answer? Recharge and come back swinging. As far as ideas, maybe explore more histories from scenes/bands outside North America. Australia, South Africa, UK, Europe, South America, China, India, everywhere has a rock/punk/metal story worth shining a light on, and can massively benefit from the exposure. Big love and best of luck with whatever you choose to do ❤
Hey Finn, hope you are good and thank you for being open and trying to find a way to continue
I really liked your in deep content where you try to explain big things and artists in the music industry. As I nerdy metal enjoyer, I really like knowing more a bout famous bands ou genres. One of my favorite videos all time is about the history of gangsta rap and how it took rocks place.
I also really like your deep knowledge of how good something is, whether that is metal related or not. I always like seeing you react to new music and being able to learn and appreciate something different that is being done. I would love to learn more about new artists that relate to early 2000 pop punk or my space metalcore.
Finn, the main reason I watch you is because I respect your opinion and insights of the music industry; especially from a marketing perspective.
I dunno if this idea sounds interesting to you, but surely you have a lot of music creators in your audience (especially in Rock and Metal); maybe you could discuss what other artists are doing (in any genre) to gain attention and present it in a way where other artists could apply it to their music.
I'm not saying you have to go full teacher mode, but maybe if your content had "applicable education", it could be appreciated no matter what genre you're talking about.
Lastly, I recently learned that "negative" engagement is still "engagement", and I think the algorithm still rewards it. If you can afford to make what you wanna make for a short period of time, and endure the haters, maybe in the long run, the haters will leave and you'll be left with a more loyal and supportive audience.
I'm with you!
The algorithm definitely rewards negative engagement as well. So. If your truly hate something ...you say nothing and just keep it moving.
A video about mid tier bands that have been able to have a long career like Coheed, Hawthorne Heights, Bayside, Four Year Strong, The Dear Hunter, or New Found Glory for example could be super cool.
I love that idea
He did a video about New Found Glory before but yeah. That'd be appealing to me too.
Four year strong are indeed mid
I’d love this too!
Yeah but that doesn’t make the maximum amount of money from each video so it’s literally impossible for him to do.
Really enjoy your videos, the tier lists are funny as hell. I'm sure you'll figure out a happy medium of making stuff for people to enjoy while enjoying making it. Just keep at it, you're the best spokesperson for alternative music on the internet.
I absolutely LOVED your Trap Metal video. I picked up almost all the artists you mentioned and really got into them cause it was unknown territory to me until you opened it up. I can honestly say it was one of my favorite vids of yours. I love what you do man. I don’t truly have an answer but I hope you don’t give up. Keep your head up no matter what you do cause you’re a rad ass dude regardless of what people may say.
Hey man, this is the only comment I’ve ever left on a video. Been watching for a couple of years now and enjoy both channels.
As someone who’s in advertising also (digital marketing for ~10 years now), I would find it fascinating to understand more how and why bands are marketed the way they are. Learning a bit about why record companies have pushed certain bands and not others, and how personalities of band members influence those campaigns, seems really interesting.
For your creative inspiration if time permits you should definitely get a third channel going on these other topics you want to generate a new audience for. I’m sure you’ve thought about this before but you sound like you are getting burned out and need a change. Maybe this video is the sign you’ve been looking for.
Appreciate all that you’ve done in the past. It’s been very entertaining and insightful.
The podcasts/interviews on your other channel are pretty cool, I would love to see more of them. Furthermore, you perhaps could not only talk about music and scenes as the main topics - but rather movies, book, films, games etc., which are somewhat related to punk/metal/rock and how those have been influential?
seriously, i kinda stopped watching the videos on his main channel because i can actually tell his heart's not really in it and he often complains that he's remaking the same video over and over. but i watch his 2nd channel all the time because Finn's personality is entertaining and he's speaking freely off the cuff about personal topics inbetween "topical topics" since it's almost all cuts from his livestreams.
it kinda makes me sad that he feels the need to sanitize himself from his main videos but i think that it hurts him shows he is a human being. Mr Beast (who i just dont watch i have no strong opinions about, his content doesnt interest me) gave a interview recently where he alluded to the fact that his videos were successful because he had eliminated as much of his own personality as possible from his vdeos.
some people are built different though, Finn is snarky but i can tell he's a very sensitive person. i'm oversensitive and i often get acidic to hide that fact about me. i don't get that same vibe from Mr Jimmy, which makes him unrelatable to me.
So I only started watching your channel with your newer videos--and I really appreciated the "wiki summary" info that you provided because I didn't do all the background research on the bands you covered, but you did! And at the same time, I found myself implicitly wanting MORE of your personal take because when it comes to music, you know what you're talking about! When you do band summaries and end with the "what is the legacy of X band," I always feel like you have a space there to add your personal arguments re: the band--not only would it segue well with the topic of legacy, but I would personally find it more interesting than summarizing a legacy based off the number of platinum albums sold or whatever. Obviously I may not be in the majority on this point based on what you shared here, but I would watch if you went in that direction again :)
Whatever you want to do I’m here for it! I love you strange history videos because while it might be an abbreviated wiki, it’s still got your take and style and that’s why I’m here!
My grandpa also had serious sleep issues related to stress. He was in Vietnam and part of his job was to crawl through the hidden network of Vietcong tunnels. Can’t imagine what he may have seen..
My father in law is from vietnam and fought in the war for SEVEN YEARS… can you imagine?
I mean I don't know dude hears a thought ,maybe instead of old millennial Bands you can Focus on More modern Bands see what happens. I think a lot of your audience would enjoy it either the history of or The impact of I don't know man I've always trusted your contact and even as I said in another comment bands and style of music I absolutely hate that you make videos on I still watch and enjoy
I like wolfsguitarden7’s idea. There are a number of videos where you talk about how a particular band had a surprising impact in only a short number of years or with a very limited discography (Nirvana and Refused are two videos that come to mind). What about some newer artists that are already making a huge impact on their genre (or even other genres) even for not having been around for long?
@@ThePunkRockMBANew Wave of Old School Thrash Metal.
I'm into history with an emphasis on military/political topics. The stories from Vietnam are just mind blowing on both sides. There's a quote about jungle warfare that states that you aren't just at war with the enemy but the environment as well. Just absolutely crazy to think about. My respect goes out to everyone on both sides as ultimately neither side that participated had an option to not - people in suits most can't even name made those calls and set up that chess board.
I'm in my early 40's and thought that my musical exploration had pretty much come to a halt. Stuck in my ways hardcore, punk, and metalish dude. But you have had an influence on how I view music, the whole music industry, what music I listen to (new and older), and various things about life in general. You are passionate, interesting, humorous, and relatable. I originally stumbled onto to your channel expecting just the usual facts and incite on music and ended up getting a whole lot more. Especially on your personal channel, I'm laughing my ass off and having a great time. Thank you.
Always loved your insights and videos for years! I can totally understand though the struggle between doing the content you’re passionate about vs the content that “pays the bills” to support your family. My 2 cents? Balance you can always do both and trust me nobody is going to think of you as “selling out” do what makes you happy and if the ones you are not super jazzed about doing gets you the streams? It’s ok
I appreciate your opinions and content, Finn. I started watching your channel when I was getting cancer treatment and it was a good way to take my mind off things. I'm better now and know you'll feel better too.
Glad you are better now!
Some ideas:
- you are (to my knowledge) the only creator who knows and talks about the “scene”. Your updated perspective on how you have overcome a lot of that stuff is truly inspirational and I think would help a lot of people.
- reformed “emos” is your niche! A lot of 30 somethings who used to mosh and crowd surf now work corporate jobs and live simpler lives. However, that wild, aggressive part of them still exists somewhere. Maybe there’s a way you could tap into that?I find your matured but funny take on life so refreshing. Nostalgia vids and commentary are amazing from you.
I agree. I loved the video about “where emo kids are now” or whatever it was called. I’d love more about that kind of thing. Recognise the roots and nostalgia but being real about the fact we’re getting older and have boring adult shit to do lol. Like as a 37 year old woman who was into nu metal back in the day, I really wanna know what other nu metal era women are wearing these days. I definitely had a decade where I went normie but now I’m rediscovering my alt roots and wanting to bring that back into my style a bit. But so much of the content out there is 20-year-olds showing their e-girl aesthetic or just recreating the nu metal look copypasta. I wanna know what grown ass alt women are wearing as they live their real lives not just being cute for TikTok or whatever. It would be cool to collaborate with some female creators to talk a bit about what reformed emos wear in their 30s and 40s
The stuff you've made sharing what you're excited about and/or believe is up and coming are my favorite videos. I've found new bands, genres of music and new perspectives on topics thanks to those videos.
Been watching you for years, you've introduced me to waterparks and dying wish. I love when you recommend new music for folks who easily get stuck in their old Myspace playlists.
Finn I love your channel. I learn and I laugh and it really has helped me not feel so damn lonely out here in the world
Please keep them coming 🙏
Love your stuff Finn, but as of late I have been having a lot more fun with your 2nd channel. The tier lists, the worst (or best of) a decade, and tournaments have been a constant go to for me when I need something to listen to while working. Sorry to hear you feel this channel has stagnated, always enjoyed your history of _____ vids even when I hadn’t heard anything by the band you were covering. You have introduced me to a lot of bands, and I’m here for whatever’s next on the channel. You got this and Hell Yeah Brother!
Mate its amazing how real you are towards your content. Fair play. Don't force it. it will come. Legendary videos mate
Its sad how hes a victim of audience capture. He turned a passion project into a his familys meal ticket which is precarious. Im a professional artist and this is the part of being famous, even at this level, that most people dont talk about.
Innit tho mate, FM for life (hello fellow Brit or maybe Aussie?) 😂
I just want to say as a creative type person I love the way you express yourself and the way you talk so bluntly. It’s refreshing in world where everyone sugar coats everything. Please don’t change and I look forward to your future videos no matter what way you decide. Thank you
Finn, one of my favorite things the channel (that you are doing less often) is your technical musical analysis for laymen. You are so good at picking apart what is similar/different between different styles of music, and contrasting how they use different tools for similar effect. I'd love to see "Finns guides to genre X". Also, with your channel growing like it is, I'm sure many viewers might not know enough about the technical side music to follow some of your analysis.
Basics guides might also be a great thing to have, for example; what makes someone good at a particular instrument, song structure basics, what is groove vs. virtuosity, etc. etc. You have a gift for that sort of thing, and even after decades of being a massive music enthusiast you regularly change my perspective and understanding of the technical side of music.
On a personal note, thanks for educating me on punk and hardcore. I was lucky enough to come of age in a place where I could go to shows of multiple generas of music most nights of the week, and I took full advantage. I made a habit of watching every kind of music in every scene I could get myself into. I was always more than happy to go to NY hardcore shows in the 90's because the shows were amazing (and cheep) even if the music rarely hit for me. Your knowledge and passion helped me understand and appreciative the shows I did get to. Thank you for making so many connections for me and giving me the context to more fully appreciate so much of the music I love, especially for music OUTSIDE of your focus on metal.
I hope your feeling better and that the comments on this video help you find a little bit of direction.
I LOVED the trap metal video. I still listed to the Spotify Playlist
I loved that video, as well. I'm now a Scarlxrd and City Morgue fan because of it.
Can you do a link to this playlist?

Love the channel! No recommendations except keep it up! gl
I hear you man. I get tons of flak for how I speak about music. Even attempting to keep it without too much of my REAL feelings, I'm still told I'm crazy negative 🤷♂️
You're channel is gold
We Love your content!!! Not only do we find it entertaining and informative also there are times when we’ve been introduced to artists that we hadn’t heard of before or given much of a chance.
Another amazing and very thoughtful video. I’ll always support you Finn no matter what you decide on doing.
I’ve actually been really into your other channel. I think the interaction between you and the chat is hilarious. I still enjoy your videos a lot. One of my favorite creators. I also love the dynamic of your haters being personally offended by your opinions and you playing into that.
Your channels are awesome. I got started with the Punk Rock MBA and I have always loved your more groundbreaking/modern content. I appreciate your personal takes as someone who seemingly has been THERE since the beginning in some of the most important scenes over the past few decades. I have always loved how you combine this real world experience from the scene with a super educated view point with a ton of production value/polish. Your other channel is awesome too, and I love the vibe you bring to it! I hate how much of the music youtube space (and most YT spaces, tbh) are clogged up with wikipedia article regurgitation, reaction vids, and soft takes. You're awesome. I'm a surgeon, but my life goal is to create a channel like yours when I have some more time. I have loved this music (and art - one of the other subjects you talk about a lot) since I was in middle school, and you are one of the very few channels out there that I follow almost every day and draw a lot of inspiration from!
Love both your channels, even if you made a video about something I’m not into or interested in, I love the way you tell it, lol, so I watch it just for you presenting it, and will continue to keep watching both your channels💯😊
🙏
Finn, your content has gotten me through the bulk of my PhD program these past few years. The long tireless hours in the lab, burning the candle at both ends, and just grinding away into the ground. Your videos have been in my headphones the whole way. Thanks man.
This is easily one of the best channel updates ever. It felt super honest and heartfelt. Love ya, man. You're one of the best creators out there.
Since, we're on the topic - "How Country Became The New Rock n' Roll" (Koe Wetzel, Read Southall, Whiskey Myers, Austin Meade)
i got suggested one of the first adtr videos you did yrs ago one day and after watching 2 more videos on your channel, i thought to myself i like the way he breaks down music. over the yrs, i watched videos you've done on bands i dont even particularly care about just bc i like how you have objective facts and sometimes real funny one liners. i hope this doesn't discourage you from continuing to make videos. much love and respect 🙏🏽
I also want to add that I bought your pop punk with breakdowns shirt and went to see adtr a couple yrs ago wearing it and this guy was wearing the same shirt and we had a bonding moment over the channel
Love your content man and hope you get out of this funk you’ve found yourself in. I’d definitely be interested in more interviews or weekly updates in the music release world. Or even sprinkling in videos of your other interests like martial arts or your family. Keep on trucking my dude
I think a series about the unpopular musicians that inspired popular musicians, would be really entertaining and interesting. Plus fulfilling for the algorithm because a big artist would be in the name and thumbnail. "The Bands You May Not Know Who Inspired _____" , something like that.
Love all your content Finn, no matter what you put out, I always am a viewer 🤘
For the record, I think the way your brain works and and the ways you think about music is probably the main reason I like this channel in the first place. I always feel like I think of things differently than most "creatives" too
I have always appreciated you and your presence on this platform. you kick ass my friend. I’m in for long haul and will appreciate anything you put out. Content on any and all music tickles my brain and is especially nice coming from your Chanel. Videos on any and all artists. Things you find interesting. New music. Old music. Weird shit. Mellow shit. Fucking everything. Your opinions, your insight, your thoughts. Video essays on anything that tickles your brain and heart homie! You’ve got a killer perspective and I enjoy kickin it with you 🫡🤘🏽 sorry shit gets so complicated and shitty on the internet. There’s a lot of shit. But there’s a few golden nuggets. Hope it stays worth it. And if it doesn’t that’s what’s up. Nothing wrong with evolving forward towards whatever serves you and your family looking forward. Cheers friend. All the love 🖤
I found your channel in the past year and enjoy your commentary and hearing your personal opinions on artists in an entertaining way. I'm personally not even a fan of the majority of the genres of music that you talk about, but still watch the videos for your humor and insight. Other similar channels I've come across sound like a robot reading a Wikipedia page. If I wanted to know what year a band formed and their discography in chronological order, I'd just google it myself.
What if you continue your "Bands that Could've been Bigger" series? Or even a series on up and coming new rock/metal bands?
Bro you really inspire me. Thank you for your years of knowledge and expertise. I would hate to see you go. Thank you for your coaching also and I plan to book another session when I hit 500 sub, about half way there now. I want to be just like you man. I wish I had creative ideas for you.
Dude your videos have always kept me entertained. Dont beat yourself up. Your vids kept me really entertained during the Covid days too
Hey man, long time viewer of your videos. I have always appreciated your content because you could always lead me to new music - I think a lot of your viewers are open to new music! I also enjoyed your content about alternative music of the last 30 year, its great to learn about the bands and music I grew up listening. This is to say, there is too much focus on the latter going on right now and I often find myself not clicking on new vids. So, if I can recommend anything is: tell us more about new music and genres!
I personally love everything you put out. Thanks for being who you are. I appreciate you!
Fwiw your videos on trap metal and emo rap got me into rap and broadened by musical tastes a lot.
I really enjoy your channel and will continue to support whatever you do.
My favorite video you ever did that helped me discover bands or albums I hadn't previously heard was your like breakdown of old school death metal. Bands like Deeds of Flesh and Internal Bleeding are now regular listening for me. I like to hear about what bands and albums you recommend from various genres and time periods. Thanks a lot for everything.
I'm sorry you're struggling, but for what it's worth, you are one of my favorite UA-camrs. I like your style/delivery because you remind me of a lot of my dude-friends. (That's a compliment lol.) I hope you keep making videos!
I'd love to hear more stories of punk/hardcore shows that you went to back in the day, what you learned from those shows, how it helped inform your world view. You've made videos like that before and they've always been my fav.
I also love hearing about the evolution of punk and hardcore. Who influenced the newer artists coming out, how did they influence those artists.
LOL -- replying to my own post. But that last thing could be really cool. That way, you could talk about new bands, your viewers could discover new bands, while at the same time talking about who influenced those bands. Truly informative, and it would fit into the name of your channel very well.
Been commenting for a couple of years now for him to make a video about terror celebrating 20 years as a band and how they never stopped and their legacy. Maybe one day... Still wish he would do more hc vids :,-(
Finn, thank you very much for sharing this with us. I really like the videos you've submitted in the last years, that nostalgia of my teen years is very catchy to me. I wish I had any suggestion to make, I can only think about finding songs about certain moment in history, like songs about WWII and so. I think you had many other suggestions that are way better than mine! Keep doing this, please. In both channels, please keep talking about music We need you, you rock!
Keep doing what you’re doing bro. I’d like to see some hip hop and rap lore. That’s some crazy dramatic lore for sure. You’d be perfect for chronicling all of that juice.
