- What killed slam? Although slam is arguably more popular than ever, to me it died when it became something very different from its origins.
- The birth of slam, from "Liege Of Inveracity" by Suffocation
- Proto-slam bands like Internal Bleeding, Pyrexia and other NYDM bands as well as Disgorge and Dying Fetus
- The birth of "true slam" with Repudilation, Deprecated and Devourment, who's 1.3.8 album became the template for modern slam
- The golden years with bands like Disconformity, Defeated Sanity, Cephalotripsy, Katalepsy and Cerebral Incubation
- The demise of slam, as it became more like slamcore / deathcore / beatdown / death metal etc with bands like Ingested, Extermination Dismemberment and Vulvodynia leading the way

It was during, "Jesus Wept". Snuck back inside as Demolition Hammer was doing, "Epidemic of Violence". I'm sitting in my designer suit managing an office right now. Lots of aggressive ink hidden underneath : )

The vocals in Slam aren’t necessarily a vessel for lyricism. They may have lyrics sometimes but for the most part the vocals are meant to be viewed as an instrument rather than means to convey lyrics or a message. So you don’t need to know the lyrics. Essentially Slam can be viewed as an instrumental genre. There are bands that focus more on lyric based Slam (Guttural Slug, Alter Idem, Kraanium) but honestly you don’t need to know what they’re saying. It’s almost pure aesthetic.
Slam still slams. If you don’t like it that’s fine. But remember one thing, aggression doesn’t equal meaningless. Just because it’s loud and aggressive doesn’t mean it’s meaningless. Anger and aggression are also part of human expression.

Ingested is the most lyrically prevalent band though, you can clearly see how the titles and messages fit together in almost all their albums.

It’s not that I can’t understand it, it’s that it all sounds the same. I like diversity, and slam doesn’t provide that. The genre itself has a lot of potential, and it would get a lot more recognition if it had more variety, and people wouldn’t just say that it’s something else just cause it has more than just “slam riffs”.
This video has a special place in my heart, but calling Broken Hope “boring” is borderline unforgivable

Slam is one of the most noisy, horrific, unmusical, and disgusting genres I've ever heard.
And that's why I love it so much.
In my opinion, Pornogrind and Goregrind have to be up there with one of the most disgusting, deplorable album covers, and bizarre lyrics in the metal genre
There's quite some crossover between goregrind and slam and some bands play with tropes from both genres. And this is why both scenes are so fucking awesome.

I think all the deathcore kids grew up, weren't happy with how the deathcore bands evolved, and were looking for something heavy. So we picked up Slam, and made it our own.

My thoughts on slam:
I think that slam is cool and all, but the genre is very limiting. Every slam band sounds similar to me because the genre itself is very limiting. If there are bands out there that are brutal DM, but hits you with a slam now and then, please give me some examples 😁

8523wsxc her latest album clearly takes influence from extermination dismemberment Seriel urbicide. You just cant compete with her guttural vocals.
I found it lacked the clear musicology of Fillet O' Man, Severed Ringpeice Annihilation and Chucked-Up Guts though.

The vocals in slam are an instrument just like any other death metal role. It's a full package deal and not for the uninitiated, end of story. Slam remains king.

Been binge watching you the past week. Why had I not found this channel sooner? He reminds me of a teacher I had in highschool back in the 90's. Walking into his class and seeing posters of old punk bands, and just feeling at home, while I was one of the few punk kids in my school. One of the only teachers who didn't scoff at my liberty spikes and orange hair.
For me, Visceral Disgorge’s debut album was where slam hit it’s peak, ive not heard a single slam album that has ever topped it

Hey man I’m from Long Island . I met and knew Suffocation members back in 93. What the hell is slam? All I remember was those guys, Pyrexia, Internal Bleeding and other bands of that style just being Death Metal. No one used the term slam

Man, what a cool video. I started listening to slam back in 2008. A friend of mine showed me a band called The Partisan Turbine and when I listened to that I was like "this shit is f***ng awesome". I dig really hard the genre as a whole, and spent about 2 to 3 years only listening to slam bands. Nowadays I very hardly listen to it, but it's really good to know that the genre has progressed and it is still popular. Thanks for the mini documentary.

I came into this genre way too late considering that I started listening to death metal in the 90s. Is there a good list of slam death bands according to the definition from this video? I would love to get such a list so I can avoid all the deathcore.
As an example of a contemporary slam band that isn't too clean or basically deathcore, I'm currently very fond of The Dark Prison Massacre. It's really nice.
You nailed it with Suffocation. I was the death metal guy while my other friends were still Slayer/Suicidal dudes. I converted them all, specifically with the Liege of Inveracity riff. Cool to hear from someone else in a different region.

I think the misogynistic parts of slam kind of add to slam. Most of them probably don't believe what they're saying but they're just trying to be as offensive as possible to add to the brootal factor.

Yea, it's really just an extension of the hyper-masculine facade of the genre. Im pretty sure that 99% of it is just tongue-in-cheek innocent fun, just like torture themes, baby killing, and pornogrind. It is nothing like NSBM and bands like Peste Noire who actually support and promote nationalist agendas. Even then I don't really care, since it's all about the music for me.

Yeah. I know this isnt slam but take the infanite death ep from thy art is murder. 40% of the lyrics from the ep is just saying discusting things about women. Its not meant to be taken literly. It just makes it more fucked up. Which is good for the goal of the ep.

Suffocation is way more Death Metal than slam, they have way more tremelo riffs than slam riffs.
