I think all the deathcore kids grew up, weren't happy with how the deathcore bands evolved, and were looking for something heavy. So we picked up Slam, and made it our own.
TIL That there's a genre of music defined by guitars playing chuggy riffs through a Metalzone, the St Anger snare, and a guy burping into a microphone.
Hey! I played guitars in Abominable Putridity a decade ago. So much for not mentoning "non-misogynistic" bands lol; "Throat Firsting Abortion" isn't necessarily about promoting "feminist values" lol! Thanks for the mention regaurdless!

Axul i honestly cant tell the difference between any of the bands, from that suffocation riff to the new, “core-ified” stuff, i can only hear the difference in the production

Same they rip, one of the few thrash bands that have breakdowns in some of their songs. Forced entry is another thrash band I like that has breakdowns in some of their songs. Although forced entry is almost in a genre by themselves.
Yes!! I would LOVE Peelingflesh to get super massive like bigger than Lorna Shore and Slaughter to Prevail possibly Motionless in White level or bigger!🎉
I remember hearing dying fetus on my way dow heavy metal road and thinking “this is just too much” and ended up with black metal and Gothenburg sound bands because of the songwriting and Melodie’s in the heaviness.
I think the misogynistic parts of slam kind of add to slam. Most of them probably don't believe what they're saying but they're just trying to be as offensive as possible to add to the brootal factor.
Yea, it's really just an extension of the hyper-masculine facade of the genre. Im pretty sure that 99% of it is just tongue-in-cheek innocent fun, just like torture themes, baby killing, and pornogrind. It is nothing like NSBM and bands like Peste Noire who actually support and promote nationalist agendas. Even then I don't really care, since it's all about the music for me.
Yeah I was kinda scratching my head at the criticism. Like, metal is allowed to talk about brutal murders and gore but rape is unacceptable simply because it has a gender bias?
Yeah. I know this isnt slam but take the infanite death ep from thy art is murder. 40% of the lyrics from the ep is just saying discusting things about women. Its not meant to be taken literly. It just makes it more fucked up. Which is good for the goal of the ep.
why not just start a nazi band then, it's even more offensive and "brootal" but if people think you believe what you're saying and beat the crap outta you, you have to take it like a brootal man would, ok?
Well....the problem is more like "Slam" shouldn't be a genre. We use Slam, but we use Tremolo picking cus...guess what....balance is important to make good music.
@jt thorsson yeah I think Finn really put the the right bands on here.....Cerebral Incubations second album is the bomb, Gorevent, Repudilation, Devourment....actually a band that gets left out too much is Sect of execration, but they as well mix it up with everything good in Death Metal, even if its slam heavy. Yeah, not mentioning certain songs or bands because they're misogynist, yet praising "Baby Killer" (which has misogynist lyrics as well btw) in the same video is a bit weird.
Maybe the position he took against misoginist bands and lyrics was just simply bcs he doesn't feel confortable listening or talking about them, he's not imposing for those bands to not be who they are, and even less judging or prohibiting the people who listen to that stuff
I was recording music in my parent's basement back in Jersey for local bands around 2010...mostly scene type of bands that were trying to be We Came As Romans....until one day a band called Digested Flesh hit me up to record them. Dudes legit told me.."we want you to make us sound like shit" XD..i didn't understand it at first but i did my homework on the genre and did my best marriage of the raw production with as much salvaged quality as I could get away with. They were happy and that was thge most fun I've had producing a band.
I watched this video 5 years ago and it’s still fun to rewatch it. Slam is such an attractive genre..Honestly, the deathcore-like sound nowadays also has its own taste. Ripped my heart too. I grew up listening to MDM. It's the genre that mostly made me who I am today and I hold it dearly to my heart. Comparaing it to non-alcoholic vodka is absurd to me. I guess you could say "flavored" vodka instead. Because being able to mix harsh and cleans vocals, melodic and heavy riffs in a Ying Yang way requires a lot of ingenuity. Anyways. I do agree with his position on slam music tho. I think some changes are for the best, but some aren't. Abominable Putridity's second album to me is slam perfection. Yeah its a cleaner production, but can't deny that Matti Way is a badass mofo! It balances things haha!
I LOVE Devourment's 138 album, having found it after reading about it in Decibel in the mid noughties. And despite your thoughts (well explained by the way) I think the "new" slam is the gateway drug for people to listen to great older albums like that one. BTW, I love to hear Suffocation get their due. If only that could translate into sales for the guys!
I personally can't stand slam. What made Suffocation so good, was the technicality and progression of their brutal songs. The reason why that riff in Liege of Inveracity hits as hard as a semi truck, is because it only plays twice, and the rest of the song doesn't sound like it at all. If a whole band writes songs that are nothing but a rip-off of one riff from 1991, that's just lame. way to kill an awesome riff by copy pasting it everywhere. not cool!
Do you like devourment? Theyre debut and 1.3.8 comp are amazing imo, and i cant stand most slam as well, internal bleedings debut and demos is great too
@@TheExtremeCube Devourment and Internal Bleeding are fine. I see them as more Brutal death metal, then exclusively slam. They have more going on. @@BluntAnims imo cephalotripsy is great as well, and they literally have almost only slams. @@TheExtremeCube Not so much a fan of Cephalotripsy. If I want to listen to something really Brutal I'd personally rather listen to Blasphemy Made Flesh or None so Vile by Cryptopsy. At least we can have healthy discussion even if we disagree. :)
I completely agree with you on the matter. The moment that got my thirsty for more extreme shit was Behemoth's Conquer All back in the day. Then I got into drumming, death metal, tech death, brutal death etc. Slam for me is a curiosity, and I appreciate the dudes doing it - seems like "real" slam guys don't take it too seriously, whether a fan or an artist. As you said, those slam riffs are best in small doses. When a whole song/album consists of slams, I lose interest. Well, I guess you have to give some credit for creativity, if you try to write an album only using 4-5 notes :D Been listening to Ingested a lot lately, just discovered them around 6 months ago or so. And I like them because they're mostly somewhat modern death metal, with some sprinkles of slam on top of it.
Hey man I’m from Long Island . I met and knew Suffocation members back in 93. What the hell is slam? All I remember was those guys, Pyrexia, Internal Bleeding and other bands of that style just being Death Metal. No one used the term slam
Amen to suffocation, the first time I heard them I was hooked the unique sound and vocals get you in a great mood. Have them cranked in the car the music is so good you can just conquer the world.
I really liked your point about melodic death metal. You perfectly described why I dislike almost all of it. I do think that the biggest reason that most metal fans don't like slam / brutal death is that it doesn't build songs around riffs, but rather around the typical slam 'chug'. I am a big black metal and death metal fan, but also I enjoy slam occasionally. To me it's weight lifting music, or something to put on when you just want to make a big frowny face and nod your head angrily. Great vid, thanks man
Hey Finn, thanks so much for this video! Your content is insightful and inspiring in equal measure. I hate when hipsters complain that a band has too modern of a production quality.
Yeah Extermination dismemberment.. good album.. wasn't the first to use the 808 bass drops as well. Dripping, Carnal Disfigurement, Edifice, and Human Decrepidy are a few I can recall... doesn't make them less of a slamming brutal DM band..

My thoughts on slam:
I think that slam is cool and all, but the genre is very limiting. Every slam band sounds similar to me because the genre itself is very limiting. If there are bands out there that are brutal DM, but hits you with a slam now and then, please give me some examples 😁
Axul i honestly cant tell the difference between any of the bands, from that suffocation riff to the new, “core-ified” stuff, i can only hear the difference in the production
Extermination Dismemberment.
Yeah I have to agree with Adam Destro. Extermination Dismemberment is a great brutal death metal band with slams. Or Abominable Putridity.
Maximize bestiality
If it doesn't sound like absolute dogshit it isn't slam
the whole genre has become a meme now and that for me makes the music more enjoyable

Slam lyrics can sound like someone drinking a soda out of a straw when the drink is clearly gone.
I remember hearing dying fetus on my way dow heavy metal road and thinking “this is just too much” and ended up with black metal and Gothenburg sound bands because of the songwriting and Melodie’s in the heaviness.
New Devourment album is insanely good!
I think the misogynistic parts of slam kind of add to slam. Most of them probably don't believe what they're saying but they're just trying to be as offensive as possible to add to the brootal factor.
Thats why i dont really care about it in slam unless they truly mean it tbh.
Which is good for the goal of the ep.
why not just start a nazi band then, it's even more offensive and "brootal"
but if people think you believe what you're saying and beat the crap outta you, you have to take it like a brootal man would, ok?

@SM LW he's a simp
@@SOBEKCrocodileGod The same here. What's that ?
As you said, those slam riffs are best in small doses. When a whole song/album consists of slams, I lose interest. Well, I guess you have to give some credit for creativity, if you try to write an album only using 4-5 notes :D
