I answer one of my most common comments: "If your channel is called The Punk Rock MBA, why don't you ever talk about punk?"
* Why I believe that I DO talk a lot about classic punk and hardcore bands
* Why I don't want to do phoned-in videos about Bad Brains, Black Flag or Cro-Mags
* What artists I believe embody the spirit of punk (100 gecs)

Bro do not change the name of channel it’s perfect
Downloading so you get the loot brother thank you for all the content dude this is as punk as it gets.
Check out SMZB
Great hardcore punk band from Wuhan China. My mind was blown when I heard them!
I like the current name but if you WERE to change it, I'd vote for just using your name. I feel like most people understand that the use of "punk" in the name is more about embracing that DIY culture and not so much punk music. People will always complain regardless of the channel name.
I would consider NOT changing the name of your channel. From my perspective, the "Punk Rock" is not the theme of the channel. Hopefully the theme evolves over time. The "Punk Rock" name is more of your personality interwoven into the evolving themes. Hope that makes sense. Cool video. 🙌
Edit: Important to note, we'll be supportive of whatever route you want to take!
LMFAO Raid Shadow Legends MBA comment followed by a Raid Shadow Legends ad. No shame and I love it.
that was fire.
I laughed out loud when the sponsor came on 😂
for real such a chad move !
Tier one UA-camr move.
It’s a strong flex that’s for sure haha
Finn's old enough to be a gate keeper but instead he's the cool guy at the merch table hyping the new bands. I don't care what he talks about, his genuine excitement and interest in topics is really engaging.
This. Absolutely.
This is the comment I wanted to make but couldn't figure out how to say
He does kinda disparage upandcoming scenes like midwest emo as Boring while hyping up mainstream artists like MGK as Saving Pop Punk. Even though that MGK record only had 1 Fun song and the rest were more Boring and Bland than a ton of Fun emo songs. Defend emo :(
Nay he is still gate keepy and is certainly biased. You just don't see it because you probably generally agree with him. He's not a bad dude by any means, seems like a great dude actually.
No one is old enough to be a gatekeeper cause gatekeeping is fucking lame to be honest.
Finn is that age where he could be the cynical, cantankerous gatekeeper, but instead, acts as a gateWAY. It's because of this channel that I'm aware of all these new and emerging trends. It's like the modern MTV News. So snapback Terror hats off to you Finn - Emo-rap ambassador, Butt Rock Analyst, Dejender of the Djent, and Curator of Stripper Fight Music.

Music scenes need more gatekeepers...
Not even Finn could get me into Emo cRAP but he's done well to educate me on more than that
@@TheRelentlessAssault No. Everyone should be allowed to dress how they want and listen to what they want. That is punk.

Punk is a mentality and spirit
You either have a genre or you don't. If punk is to include this vast swath, it's not a genre. Music can be anti-establishment and not be punk. Every shout against The Man isn't required to be accepted as punk.
“They’re just feeding my kink”
Glad to know we’ve reached this level of comfortability
Exactly what I expected from Artist Formerly Known as Sergeant D.
We all missed the biggest irony of all, by calling himself punk, and refusing to talk about punk, he has become the most punk of all. Like an Obi Wan Punknobi, he has become more punk than we could possibly imagine.

well said
your comment reminds me of Offspring Ixnay ...the Disclaimer lmao
Punk literally influenced all the genres/bands you talk about. So to me, you talk about punk in a way. Great vid as always, love your content

Excellent comment
Don’t change. This channel is great. Punk is a super general term that can mean a hundred different things. Don’t re brand stick with it

@@dantesinfernal It was.

I may or may not be starting a channel very soon named that... 🤔

I like how Ian Mackaye puts it - “I think of punk as the free space”. Punk is whatever someone needs it to be everyone’s definition is going to be different.
Also I do see the irony in quoting Ian in this context...😋
Hmm much like Hogwarts room of requirement. This is probably the most accurate explanation of what it means to be punk
I tell you why I don't talk about punk. Cos I'm here to tell you about Raid: Shadow Legends.
My favorite way to define punk is "punk is not a patch on your sleeve, its a patch on your heart"
Awwwww
Damn that's apt
Yeah I been thinking lately there's nothing less punk than going to punk shows dressed Punk cuz you think that's what you're supposed to do. I go to them dressed like a dad going on vacation.
I'd wear a Stripper Fight Music MBA shirt.
It was the Raid Shadow Legends MBA that got me 😂
New merch, Finn?
Love all your content I don’t understand how you don’t have more subscribers you’re so respectful to all musicians even if you don’t like them and you’re very good at putting history together especially good criticisms for all Bands Thanks for all your content keep it up brother I watch them all
Thank you!
As someone who loves black metal unironically, i agree with you, 99% of the people who listen to it. Cringy elitism
"The Wide Ranging Heavy and Aggressive Underground and Occasionally Mainstream Music and the Associated Fashion and Lifestyle M.B.A." doesn't have the same ring to it as Punk Rock MBA...I think you're fine.
Well said 😂
Honestly dude I could care less what you call the channel..I just like hearing you talk about music. I also just started checking out your podcast on spotify..very entertaining keep it up
Couldn't care less
@@Ninjamanhammer ok
I also like that you look at all this culture from the eyes of someone in their late 30's/early 40's. I think some of us from the punk/hardcore scenes as we grow older explore the extremes of other culture and music scenes. While I don't like every video you post, I understand where it's coming from, and I dig that you have these passions and information. And really, punk is a state of mind, not just a genre of music.
i learn so much from the punk rock mba as someone in the “punk” “alt” scene! the insight on branding and influence of an open mindset in music has done leaps and bounds for me! never stop putting out videos about all these topics you’re inspired by, you’ve definitely taught me a whole bunch as a fellow artist! thank you finn!
Always weirded me out that some people cant understand that Emo, Scene, Metalcore, Deathcore, and 95% of the genres you talk about have roots in punk rock.
Then why wouldn't he talk about the roots? He could deviate from the branches down to the roots don't you think?
@@puropsychobilly3995 I can see why he wouldn't want to do a video of things he hasnt experienced first hand. It would lose its charm and turn into a VH1 documentary of regurgitated information.
What the fuck is “scene”?
@@emceehamma3693 Well, you know there's this thing called google, it's a search engine and that means you can use it to search any word, any term that you don't know what it means and google will give you the answer. Try it out, you'll like it!
@@chaosaintme9067 you know, you’re right. I guess rhetorical questions are harder to effectively use on the internet, especially when talking about something like a scene of music that’s literally called “scene”.
I’m a baby boomer and probably one of the older viewers of this channel, so I have lived the music history you talk about, including that hate the Beatles got at first. Too many people get stuck listening to the same music their whole lives, and anything that shakes up peoples’ thinking is good. I get so tired of the “music today is garbage” comments you hear so often, and I can attest that people said EXACTLY the same things in the 60s.
Except when the music is actually talentless. And there is a lot lately. But I agree that saying new music is garbage JUST because it's new is close-minded.
@@user-fj6kk1vo8n Too many people seem to think “today’s music” is limited to what’s on the pop charts. There is a lot of uninspired stuff there, but there always has been some of that-people just don’t remember the bad stuff. There were some years in the 60s and early 70s where the top of the charts had a lot of wonderful songs, a golden age we may never see again.
You know most people posting the 'music today is garbage' are 12 years old though, right
@@user-fj6kk1vo8n Why does talent matter? Who cares? Lmao. Imagine enjoying a song but refusing to listen to it because you don't think the performer has enough innate potential
@@DaveGrean Haha right?
I love your channel, it's more of a deeper look at alternative music in general then anything else and I like that. I hope you grow more.
Plot twist: Raid Shadow Legends didn't actually sponsor this video and Finn just did that to troll the haters.
I think what you’re doing is absolutely awesome. I occasionally disagree with you on certain issues or bands. Overall your channel is solid and you have the facts to back up what you post.I thoroughly enjoy your content please keep it going brother.
What I’m just amazed about is how your entire channel is focused around punk, hardcore, pop punk, emo, metalcore, etc and the evolution of teenage counter culture music but still have yet to make a warped tour video
There is a warped tour documentary and kevin has his own podcast- get it straight from him!
@@ThePunkRockMBA an Ozzfest video would be kinda cool

Love you channel mate and the spirit (and more importantly to me at least, the integrity) comes through loud and clear to a lot of people! Congrats on 300k! much love xx
I appreciate that you do talk about the newer music culture. I find myself listening to the same music all the time, and its nice that I can try out something new every once in a while. I find myself agreeing like 85% of the time, and am really happy that I discovered your channel to bring up and talk about stuff that I'm not seeing or hearing from others. You seriously do open my mind to some topics that I didn't realize I was being close minded towards. That's good content 👌 thank you.
The "punk rock"/DIY mentality extends to a lot beyond just pure punk music.

So true. Punk is Not only a music-genre. Punk is an attitude and this channel pleases my Rock and Metal-Interests so much, I don't want you to change a bit. Keep going the way youre doing right now!🤘
Fell off on watching some of these videos but the reason I always come back is because fin brings a great unbiased commentary to scenes that are ignored or forgotten. He is open minded enough to be an older head with knowledge but also willing to notice current trends. It's videos like this that got me into punk rock MBA. Thanks finn! Don't forget the struggle, don't forget the streets.
Thank you for this video!!!! I've only been here for a couple of weeks and it's already one of my favorite channels. Don't ever change!
Personally, I always felt like your channel covers everything that has roots in punk. In today's age, punk is fucking dead. It has been for decades. Pop Punk feels like it's been dead almost two decades. But, nobody can argue that Saoson or Asking Alexandria is like 3rd cousins twice removed from The Misfits. It's all rooted in Punk. I mean shit, it's definitely not rooted in Disco.
Yeah definitely. Still talking about punk and pop punk is just beating a dead horse
@Iqbal Hidayat deep bro, deep
Punk is alive but it just evolves with the time
The punk of 1980 is dead ofcrouse
But you have 2021 punk
Punks not dead at all, its just underground asf man, your local punk scene is something you gotta look for by talking to mutuals and what not. Took a lil over a month for me to find the location to this lot where most of the punk bands in my city play. It really be like that lmao

Ahhh, back in the day when you could get “Punk” delivered straight to your door, cash on delivery, 2 months later. Good times.
11:03 Ian Mackaye once said "the great thing about punk is, when someone says what punk is, there's going to be some kids that are going to say 'ok, you can stay with your punk there, I'm going to be punk over here'"
You know I’ve always kind of thought of Ian Mackaye as a grumpy old guy, but then I hear him say something insightful and remember what a smart guy he is.
These videos are great. Keep swinging for the fences Finn!
I love your channel so much bro, your attitude and perspective on music is awesome and reassuring. It reminds me that music lovers will always find a way to come together and enjoy good shit
If you just talked about punk, you'd be very limited in what you talk about.
And every comment section would be about how the band discussed isn't punk for various reasons like:
Too catchy
Doesn't have boring lyrics about radical political activism
Band makes a living off music
Etc
Or they're played on the radio so they're not punk.
And they all just been copying of each other. The technology is just getting better.
And that's not very punk

I enjoy the videos that you do on the scenes and how they connect to modern trends as it keeps me up to date on stuff that I may miss. Keep up the great work!
Anyone who has Punk or metal being a large part of their personality and thinks it's just a music genre has missed the entire point. The culture and philosophy is the important part, and in that respect you're punk as fuck, you don't have to prove yourself to rando's on the internet

Boom goes the truth bomb.I love the spirit and sound of punk as much as I love old solo blues guitar. And I am no more 'punk ' than I am an old black man from Mississippi.I just parrot the sounds I enjoy.RAWK!
True, but when your philosophy stops you from enjoying most of the things the world has to offer I'd say something has gone massively wrong, and I believe most of you here would agree.
Please explain the “culture and philosophy” of punk? It just seemed like a shitty cliquey gatekeeping elitist bullshit of dumb people acting like hardasses because they listen to shitty music played by people who can barely play their instruments and some shitty drummer just overly tapping on their snare.

There's only so many "does it djent?" videos and "Corey Taylor thinks X about Y" headlines I can take so this is one of the only music channels I follow. The meta/behind the scenes discussion about the culture of it all is endlessly fascinating to me and I love the state of the channel as it stands

I’ve been following you pretty much since your start, I must say you have a good in-depth and introspective analysis on music and the punk rock title very well suits you. The way you describe your opinion and views on music is mostly accurate and entertaining at that. I think it’s great that you don’t reiterate facts about bands but rather give an in-depth view of how that band had an impact during a particular time based off of many different perspectives. Entertaining with a lot of food for thought what else could you ask for keep putting out great content brother!

What I love about the channel is that you are someone who has such a diverse alternative music taste. You have such great takes on the alternative culture and frequently turn me on to new artists. Thanks for what you do.
“Give these artists 5 years or so from now”
Finn, genuine question: say 5 years ago (2016), what artists would you categorise as “hated by the music establishment at the time”, “now critically accepted” and “represent the spirit of punk”? Interested in your answer.
I don't know much about the punk realm, but I can tell you that in the metal realm basically every deathcore band was widely hated and considered "fake" or "poser death metal" and somehow magically by the mid 2010s it was widely accepted and considered a big, influential, and important part of the metal scene. Killswitch and BTBAM were "stupid scene bullshit" in 2000 and they were considered seminal metal bands by 2005.
@@lolwutno talking about KSE and BTBAM: I think that's because those people knew basically nothing about them and what they actually represented. When they understood that, they stopped hating on them
Or the fact that the music critics & the audience like to judge artists by the initial release whether it’s the singles or the record.. “They’re just a one trick pony..” or something ludicrous like that..
Five or more years later after so many more records & tours & now everyone jumps on their jock.

What would be fun though, talking about OG Punk-bands: Danzig-Misfits vs. Michale Graves Misfits =D
Danzig for sure! He'll always be my favorite in The Misfits and my fiance and I are actually friends with Jerry Only! He's a really cool guy! Last time we hung out with him when he came to town he invited us into his tour camper, gave us free signed and personalized cds, fed us, and let us wait for the show backstage because it was so cold outside and he knows my boyfriend had just gotten out of the hospital at the time so he knew of his health ailments and was considerate! The only thing i can say to you is thank you; you're doing the work that needs to be done, educating people including myself and making them think in a way that's entertaining and really cool :)
Punk is a lifestyle from skateboarding, to activism, to inclusiveness, to metal and everything else. So I love what you are doing, piss off those elitists.
Legit! Without The Misfits (who Cliff Burton loved) Metallica would not be the same Metallica we grew up with. Same with Pantera, without Phil's background of the more hardcore variants of punk, we never would've gotten albums like Vulgar Display of Power. Punk is an ideology not wearing safety pins in your nose or studding out your vest.
