i have rode on the up844 for 200miles from the up steam shops to denver CO. and back and i thought i would tell you my friends name is Ed Dickens he is one of the enginers on the 844 and is also over the UP Steam shops and if i remember right Ed has had the 844 up to a hundred mhp. him self.He is a really awsome ,Man

Daylight has a top speed of 105 mph from what I know and it's my favorite train. I have a 15 year old ho model of it, and the little Jupiter has a top speed of 60 mph. I have an hour model of the Jupiter also. They're two of my top 5 favorite locomotives ever!

Of course that will never be proven, but it is true that the FEF-3s were very much capable of 120 mph. That being said, most crews seemed to prefer to cruise around the 110 mark you mentioned, some venturing to 115 mph if particularly behind schedule.
