    Avoiding eye contact could also mean, the person feels generally uncomfortable in this social situation, like you tintimidate him or he has general social anxiety. Doesn't have to have anything to do with deceit or boredom. And the more brazen and remorseless liars will will tell their BS it while looking you straight in the face.

    • @SweatyFatGuy
      @SweatyFatGuy Рік тому +12

      My PTSD has me scanning constantly, so I am rarely holding eye contact with others while conversing, I am usually listening and don't get bored, but if I do I will simply walk away. Its not uncomfortable for me, its hypervigilance and my mind trying to keep track of everything around me.

      @@SweatyFatGuy Exactly. Or the person may be on the autism spectrum and generally not comfortable to hold eye contact. There are so many options why someone is not comfortable holding eye contact. And there are plenty of liars who don't have a problem doing it. Particularly the psychopathic or narcissistic types who feel no remorse about it and see you as an unimportant subhuman anyway.

      its also known that eye contact interferes with cognition, ie closing ones eyes helps to better solve complex mathematical problems and makes it easier to recall knowledge. so looking ppl in the eyes is often an indicator of someone, as you note, who is just spewing out mindless b.s. and not actually being thoughtful.. they are relying on cheap signalling of eye contact = "respect" or "confidence", classic tools of con men.

    • @SweatyFatGuy
      @SweatyFatGuy Рік тому +1

      @@petrairene sure, but I am not autistic, I only know what its like to live with PTSD for nearly your entire life. With almost everything involving human nature, its complex and nuanced.
      Its kinda funny though, growing up in the environment in which I did, that activated the survival mechanism we call PTSD because it doesn't fit with a polite and safe society, has made me exceptionally adept at reading non verbal communication in other people. I can tell a lot about people, if they are lying, when a girlfriend or wife is cheating or has been thinking about it, when someone intends to do harm to others... I can tell as accurately as seeing the sunrise.
      Its something those with autism find nearly impossible to do.

    Serotonin governs postural flexion-how you carry yourself physically.
    Someone high in serotonin will literally walk with confidence-it’s one of the first things we notice about people.
    Shoulders hunched, head down, no eye contact-low serotonin, low confidence, avoiding social intentions-likely not the happiest person.

    😄 People should also recognize that body language is also culturally ingrained toward social norms! Not all body language observations apply to non American cultures!
    I spent a lot of time amongst Asian immigrants and overseas in Japan, and my body language shifted immensely as i appropriated those things to my own behaviors while overseas, sometimes just subconsciously as i recognized it in people all around me.
    So, when i came back to the US, lol i kind of felt like a foreigner just because my body language was so different, and NOBODY that i knew previously could read my body language anymore! 😂 my friends kept misinterpreting my moods and facial expressions and posture, etc, so i spent a REALLY long time (years) breaking those habits to try to have American body language again, so that people understood me!!!!!

    Avoiding eye contact can be for other reasons. I have a son who is autistic and I used to use the “look at me when I’m talking to you.” when he was a young child. And he would get uncomfortable and fidgety. He is non verbal, so he isn’t always able to let me know what is going on. After learning from other people who were autistic that sometimes some people can’t focus on the words when they are forced to have eye contact. The way they described it was imagine your mind taking a thousand photos a second and then trying to concentrate. Once I learned this he was able to focus more and was open to more teaching when I went against that learned behavior that I had. I could go on for days the things I have learned from my son.
    Now when I encounter somebody who looks away or turns their attention to another place, I use vocal questions or cues to see if they are paying attention. Because you never know if a co worker, or somebody you are just meeting is the same as my son.
    Just some food for thought. I love the videos, keep up the great work.

    Don’t try to posture/peacock your body language, work on being the person you wanna be then just be authentic
    Be comfortable with eye contact and silence and pauses and conflict
    (Once you were no longer nervous with her (because you told/spoke to her the truth and the reaction/result was positive) you practiced staring at her without breaking eye contact when she was talking and when you were talking to her (you need to work on when you’re talking though because you have a habit of looking away when talking to people).
    You also became less nervous and more able to make unbreaking long eye contact when you noticed/realized she was nervous too (it’s like you got the power back in the dynamic and it’s like she was more humanized and less mythologized/scary. The dragon became smaller and you became more powerful)

    Not making eye contact can also be an indication that we're dealing with a visual processor; that type of person may be an Associative Process oriented individual.
    This is why I really like the show:
    Lie to me.
    The body language is important, but it's all relative.
    And that is why, when dealing with individuals, it is absolutely *imperative* to establish a Standard.
