Hepburn Springs has some lovely springs, more of a spa experience private and exclusive. The springs you went to sound like a bit of a money grab gimmicky thing.
The times when i travelled on the spirit, I chose not to “buy” their wifi - what they don’t tell you is that (with Telstra at least) you actually have regular coverage on your mobile phone pretty much the entire way over (I did a day sailing one time & didn’t encounter any dead spots when I used my phone….)
I recently did the alba thermal springs in Mornington. The early bird special before a certain time price $70 or $80pp I can’t remember. All day access, you can add on breaky. was such a good experience for me. We pretty much had the whole place to ourselves for like an hour. and they manage noise control. I laughed a bit too loud after going into one of the cold plunge pools and security came over and told me to keep it down 😂 (kindly!!) but yeah this was my worry about the OG hot springs. This is the exact experience I thought it would be.
That’s disappointing about Peninsula Hot Springs. I’ve been many times, but almost always on a weekday. The new Alba hot springs seems less crowded. It’s advertised as more upscale and is more expensive. I’ve not been there to comment though.
I personally don't do the crowded touristy thing preferring to go to places that allows me to experience what nature has to offer, without the background noise and evidence of humanities existence. A country town an hours north by car from Melbourne suits me in my remaining time walking above the ground.
I can't help but think about those crowded spa/pools and what percentage of people have pissed in it already today. How much do you want to pay to bathe in other people's urine.

Warrnambool hot springs are so much better but you must get to New Zealand.

Did you get to see the chinamans hat while on the ferry? I always see plenty of seals lazing around on it when I'm out fishing that way.
