- The FX6 is a mighty powerhouse in a mini body. Nimble, portable, but containing much of the power of the FX9. In this review we cover all our favourite features and who this new release is for.

I love your stuff. Straight to the point. Plenty of good info but no filler. Glad I came across your channel!
Thank you MMM! Super super appreciate the support!
I've been watching a ton of reviews on this camera and yours has convinced me to turn in my FS5 with RAW upgrade and get the FX6 in 2021. I think the lack of buffer for 4k 120fps is pretty much the clincher for me. many thanks
What a beast the FX6 💪🏼😉 🎥 really cool review and awesome footage 😀 i think this could be my new cam 👍🏻 best cinematic greetings from germany
Thanks Schöfer Film!
@@vistek Now i have it since two weeks and i am still learning & testing 👍🏻 but it is a really beast 💪🏼😀
Thank you for the info on the 240fps. Looks like it’s the exact same line-skipping readout as on the A7siii, and not full sensor readout. Great looking camera though. I have always thought the FS5 was a great form factor. Very compact, and that rotating hand grip is so good.
Great review! keep it up 👍
Thanks! 👍
i love it that you love it - great review and shots
Nice work dude. Really appreciate it.
Thank you!
Love to see more footage. I loved the samples that you showed. Just got mine in, need to put it to the test. What lens did you use?
Thanks. I can't remember, but I'm always using Sony native photo AF lenses with these tests.
Great video. What’s the track used in this video for the various iso ranges section?
Hi Paul - I no longer remember, since I've now deleted all my project files. I get all my music from artlist.io.
Ok so I am thinking of upgrading but I need something with a good autofocus, and good for making short films and something I can rig up with a cage and such would this camera be good for all that??
What's the slate app you're using in the ISO section @ 1:22?
hey man, just bumped onto this review and I know its a bit off subject but what that kind of "slate" app you're using there? Is that connected to the camera and picking up all the settings automatically or did you put them manually? Thanks and keep up the amazing work.
Hi SJM, it's NO BU Slate. Thx! ✌🏻
👏 i love this Cam 👍🏻😉 maybe my next cam 😅 but why is there no object focus tracking at the FX6? That would be so important and the A7 s3 can do it 🥴🤔 i hope there will next be a firmware update
Thanks for the review. It’s on the Christmas list. Come on Santa 🎅
I can't be the only one who saw the thumbnail and thought that tagline said Mighty Mighty Bosstones for a split second. At least that's the impression that I get.
Shoulda sold my fs5mkii while it was still worth something! What a shockingly good camera at a great price point
Expect my purchase in the coming months
This will make me upgrade from my pocket4k’s. Very exciting.
Great video would love to know the price tag but I’m sure I can find that. Thank you
Hi John, there is a link in the description below. Thanks for the comment!
Great info! But why only for documentary, etc? It seems like a perfect small movie camera?
Thank you for the great comment, Gert. Though, I didn't say it's only for documentary. I simply meant that high ISO opens up a lot of run & gun possibilities. Excessive grain & noise is often acceptable in documentary productions where the story is paramount to everything else. Fictional narratives really requires a suitably clean image for viewers to feel engaged.
@@vistek Do you find the ISO at 12800 is clean enough for that, or is it too noisy for the clean image you’re referring to?
Would love to see a new FS5, like this camera but cheaper with a S35 sensor!
Love it
What are your thoughts on the FX6 vs C70 / C300 iii?
I have the FX6 and C70 preordered right now but will have to cancel one. I’m not invested in glass from either system so it’s a tough choice 😩
Hi Zach, I'm going to let the other chime in on this. I haven't tried the C70 nor the C300 mk3 yet.
Thanks for the review. Do you have any experience with the Blackmagic pocket 4K ? I'm considering selling it for the FX6 but I'm worried to lose the beautiful colour science and cinematic grain of Blackmagic for Sony's that I've always considered to be too "video" (sorry for my English...).
Thanks !
Hi Clement. I would say that the BMPCC4K and the FX6 are very different cameras. They approach image making from very opposite ends of the spectrum. Consider the 4K (which is a MFT sensor), like a MAC. It's very easy and fun to use, and very reliable - but it can feel limiting. The BM products are really designed for users who want an instantly good image with the least amount of futzing around. Sony (full frame sensor), is more like a PC in this way. It can feel much more complicated, but generally the camera gives users considerable more customization. The FX6 behaves far more like a proper production camera. In fact, outside of its size, it is designed like a proper production camera. You can get a great image out of both cameras - but depending on your needs and usage, one will clearly be better suited over the other.
@@vistek Great analogy. I’ve had my FX6 for a few weeks now and I’m absolutely loving it. That AF, auto ND and Cinetone make for an outrageously usable run ‘n gun combo - but there will still be times I pull out the BMPCC4K for that sweet colour/image.
Yes, but two major flaws that hopefully get updated through firmware. 1 - object tracking. 2 - no mic without handle (hopefully at least with usb-c "dongle" soon).
That handle is obnoxious. Otherwise a great looking camera. I could get by without the audio jack because I always record audio separate ... As long as the little onboard mic will record a sync clap, I'm good to go. What really sells me is the electronic ND and AF ... wow. Nice comparison video.
How does touch tracking work?
HI Matthias, I'd encourage you to watch Gerald Undone's review. He talks about it extensively.
Do you think the image is better from the FX6 than the older FS7? From what I've seen it doesn't look as good as the fx9 image
Hi John. I’ll be honest, I think most online image examples from cameras are more fodder for entertainment than they are an accurate representation of the cameras. The exception would be two fold: All cameras compared are filming the identical thing from the identical angle. So you have a control and then can compare to those controls. The second is that the original footage should be made available for download so that the viewer has an opportunity to see a relatively uncompressed image and manipulate the footage as well. Outside of that - What is being filmed, and how it’s lit has a far far greater impact on the quality of an image than the camera used to film it. Then factor in how someone has decided to grade their SLOG3 footage. Also is their monitor calibrated like your monitor? Might look great on their monitor but terrible on yours. So, as you can see - way too many factors here to actually make a genuine qualitative statement on image fidelity. My recommendation is to try to get ahold of all three cameras and do your own tests. Most commercial devisions of retail companies, like ours, will make cameras available for camera tests).
Will see
Other issues with the camera: when Windowed to Super 35, you get 1080-only, no 4K. Sensor is set high on the body, so many 15mm rod-based matte boxes, etc., won’t work without an adapter of some sort. Apparently there’s an extra step to some of the autofocus functions, so it can be a little awkward. Not as many codec options as other cameras (though there are some good ones). The only issue that’s a deal-breaker for me is the lack of 4K Super 35. If they fix that with a firmware update, this would be one of the best doc cameras ever, IMHO.
Great comments, Scott. I only had the camera for a couple of days and wasn't able to test a lot of things out on it. Those are some good points to keep in mind.
I’m not sure how you can get a 4k super 35 with this sensor. Probably won’t happen
The sensor is at the same height as the FX9...it just looks higher because the body is much skinnier. 4K super35 is impossible without some pretty fancy digital trickery...it's only a 10MP sensor after all.
Definitely liking FX6 more than a7s3. Definitely more for independent filmmakers. Just wondering if it is compatible with Atomos Shogun Inferno via SDI.
From what I read, it is compatible.
@@stephenchamberlain8626 I am not sure as Atomos website only mentioned Shogun 7. Would love to see it compatible with Shogun Inferno. The question I have and it has never been answered is: Is Sony a7siii work with Shogun Inferno for 4k 60fps/120fps or 1080p 240fps? No one even address this issue anywhere. If the answer is yes, than so most likely FX6 is also.
I'm so back and forth between FX6 and Komodo. I have FX6 on preorder...cancelled A7Siii preorder twice, and cancelled Komodo preorder once. Aaaaghh! Supply chains are wonky enough already...I'm sure having 1000 dudes preorder then cancel then preorder than cancel every three weeks as something else awesome gets released lately doesn't help. We certainly are swimming in exciting cameras these days.
What kind of work do you do? I have a Komodo and can answer questions
Komodo is a beast, but no autofocus -.-
Already bad pixels on the sensor or am i wrong?
Where did you see this? Do you have a time code to quote? I haven't seen anything of that nature in my time with the camera.
@@vistek i see one at hi ISO. Upper in the middle. ibb.co/VWCsK5c

A7SIII is awsome
But is it worth an extra $2.5K over the A7SIII...
The electronic ND alone is worth that to a lot of shooters, and as a bonus you also get the Venice colors. To me it's a no brainer.
no internal raw recording and no anamorphic options.
@@qtben17 no audio input without handle (so gimbal use is out) I think its depending heavily on your work scenario. I dont need ND filter.
At least add "video" to the title.
sony still making rolling shutter cameras?.. then the answer is no.
