Thanks for taking the time to do this comparison. Sounds like you have some pretty key things that prevent you from switching. I am currently a FX6 owner, but by no means do I latch on to brands (currently have Sony, Canon and Fujifilm in the cabinet depending on the job). Couple of things that stood out for me: 1. When you show the DR test you compare the much more expensive C300mkii vs FX6 instead of the C70 which is in the same price point and target audience for entry level cinema camera buyers. Do you know if the C70 with its DGO sensor and FX6 DR test are more comparable? 2. Another thing was if you tried using Phantom LUTS or Alister Chapman's LUTS? Those were the ones that convinced me right away that S-LOG3 was something that I could enjoy using, as opposed to anything pre A7sIII/A1/FX6/FX3 - those were impossible for me to work with.
The lab test was C300III but the C70 has the exact same DR. My tests were strictly C70 vs FX6 and this also confirmed it. I did try the phantom luts. Also good, I still wasn’t convinced. Personal choice for sure. The 1 stop DR was def the biggest factor by far though

OSS (Sony's image stablization) and AF are silent unlike my old Canon EF lenses which were LOUD! This is a big deal for handheld run and gun work when I'm relying on my on-board shotgun mic and when I love using the OSS of the 24-105 f4. That is my preferred way of shooting. What are your other favorite lenses on the FX6/FX3? I’m thinking of getting the 28-135 servo zoom instead of the 24-105. Heavier, yes. But great to have servo zoom for events. In some cases the added weight could actually be helpful for the added stability. Also have to compare the 24-70 2.8 vs a super zoom? Do I need both? Tough question.
@@moc1911 I have the 16-35 f2.8, 35 f1.4 and 70-200 f4. I like them all. Love how lightweight the 35 and 70-200 are. There is a "Clear Image Zoom" feature and rocker bars on both the handle and grip that allow you to basically do "servo-style zooms" without a servo lens. It's kinda cool, though I usually just do slow punch ins in post if need be.
I have used both the C70 and the A7S III which has the same sensor as the FX6, and what you said about the dynamic range is true. The C70 has so much more dynamic range especially in the shadows. Unlike any camera I've seen before, from RED to blackmagic to panasonic. None of the cameras have the amount of shadow detail like the C70.
If the C70 had a full frame sensor and better build quality it would be brilliant. Then you could take advantage of the RF glass as designed. But canon fo some reason didn't. I have been looking at this camera and can't justify the price over a hybrid. With the booster it is dearer than the R3, which has everything accept NDs
Sounds like you good the auto ND would work better than any other auto exposure function. It doesn't. Also there are various settings to control how it operates, did you experiment with those?
Not enough for sure. But that was definitely rather a side note than a compelling reason as I probably wouldn’t have used it much anyway as I can’t afford the camera messing up on a lot of my doc shoots
FX6 is a very strange (maybe shamefull for it's tier) camera in terms of DR; what is strange is that an FX6 or FX9 that are the higher tier of Sony Cinema cameras have LESS usable dynamic range than an FX3/A7SIII which is a shame for a cinema camera. C70 is the best you can get in that price range but it also has it's downsides like loosing saturation on highlights, only Eletronic stabilization and no EVF. Here's a list of DR of several cameras (from Gerald Undone tests on several videos) Canon C70 - (C-Log 2) - 13 stops A7SIII - HLG 3 (100 ISO) - 13 stops Canon C300 mkII - C-Log2 (ISO800) - 12.8 stops Sony FX9 - S-Log 3 (ISO800) - 11.5 stops Sony FX6 - S-log3 - 11.3 stops Sony A7III - S-Log2 (800ISO) - 11.3 stops Canon R5 - C-Log (ISO400) - 11 stops Canon R6 - Canon Log1 (400 ISO) - 10,5 stops Dynamic range is one of those things that can't be corrected later and gives that professional look, some other characteristics have workarounds.
So why the heck canon say c70 have 16 stops dr, Sony a7siii 15 stops..?! Anyway R5 in clog 11 stops but now have clog3 what have better dynamic range than clog (1) and in 8k raw R5 use clog2 what have the best dynamic range.
They might be refering to photo DR due to its RAW capabilities or total DR of vídeo which sometimes means sacrificing image quality. Gerald undone calls it Usable DR.
I'm sorry but this whole video was confusing at best. Why would you insinuate that you're about to switch ALL of your camera gear with a camera you've never even touched before? There was too many things You said that was contradicting, baffling and theres way too much of these type of clickbait UA-camrs on UA-cam you don't have to go there. You can do better than this. If you love Canon great but please stop the underline hating it pours out of your mouth with two different tongues..
your statement makes no sense.. I switched from Sony to Canon, then Blackmagic, then Canon again. I am pretty familiar with most systems. I love the FX6 when it comes to features and specs. So on paper it wins over pretty much everything canon offers especially with the price tag. But using it, there were so many little things that would've made the switch a lateral move rather than a step up. That's why I didn't buy the camera
Great video brother, but oh boy, you've got some heat comin' your way...lol. In my past couple videos I've called out the A7Siii for being "mediocre," and have gotten a LOT of pushback over that (even though I own one too). Dudes just can't accept that a camera they own may not be the best camera out there. It's crazy how tribal people get over this stuff. I shoot RED, Sony, and Blackmagic, and would have no problem shooting Canon either...it's just not the way my system has gone. Cameras are tools, and as you so eloquently pointed out, it needs to make business sense above all else. I don't acknowledge which label a camera has painted on it...to me, it's a hammer, and different hammers are good for driving different nails.
Its strange that it doesnt have different 10bit codec options. My a7siii is able to shoot both xavc-i(all intra) and xavc-s(long gop) in 4k50 422 10bit(maybe also in 4k100, i dont remember). I kinda expected fx6 has all the good stuff a7siii has and some extras. The long gop takes a bit more pressure on my 2 years old computer but it saves a lot of space if needed.

Exactly. That was my biggest reason for sure!
Thats called confirmation bias.
@@glennparker8247 Or maybe its just true.
You can very easily balance the fx6 with top handle on the rs2 that you use
really? Seems very unbalanced with the cable sticking out the side as well. But good to know!
Canon needs to update the C70 for raw. BRAW would be amazing. You're really selling me on the c70. It seems like a tasty camera for narrative films
Here's a list of DR of several cameras (from Gerald Undone tests on several videos)
Canon C70 - (C-Log 2) - 13 stops
A7SIII - HLG 3 (100 ISO) - 13 stops
Canon C300 mkII - C-Log2 (ISO800) - 12.8 stops
Sony FX9 - S-Log 3 (ISO800) - 11.5 stops
Sony FX6 - S-log3 - 11.3 stops
Sony A7III - S-Log2 (800ISO) - 11.3 stops
Canon R5 - C-Log (ISO400) - 11 stops
Canon R6 - Canon Log1 (400 ISO) - 10,5 stops
Dynamic range is one of those things that can't be corrected later and gives that professional look, some other characteristics have workarounds.
It's all about views for these guys
your statement makes no sense..
@@glennparker8247 Yes this video made it pretty clear.
Sheesh Sony Fanboys are offended. The guy is simply sharing his opinions. It’s ok to have a difference of opinion. Good work Mr. Cooper.
They sound like trump supporters.
Think this is more a user problem...
Canon c70 autofocus isn't perfect though,sony fx6 manual autofocus is cranky,fx6 doesn't fit run&gun at all
I can tell that you’re shooting on the Sony FX6 in this video. The A cam definitely feels like it. Am I right or am I right?
you are ... wrong :D It was shot on the C300III
@@damiencooper (Sighs) Welp, looks like I’ll be saving up for a Canon cinema camera now. I think it’s time to give in to Canon. Awesome video by the way!
New firmware v2.0 is now out for the FX6 with new features
I know. I’m still contemplating 😂
Yes... Totally agreed. It looks like a camcorder from the 90'. I hate it. Untill and unless they do something about that camcorder looking design. i am not giing to buy.
Cinematch basically makes Sony look like anything Arri Alexa, Canon c300, etc.
I think from a ROI perspective it makes sense to stick with Canon. You in there eco system so use it.I’m heavily invested in Sony with my GM lenses,so it’s a no brainer to stick with Sony.Is one better than the other? Canon and Sony are always neck on neck, with Sony slightly ahead.Use the tools you have and shoot great video, irrespective of the brand.
totally agree. That being said, I ended up buying a RED :D
@@damiencooper I hear the sensor is fantastic on the Red X
Very interesting review. We shoot on the c70 and fx6 regularly and often cut footage together. I would say they both have strengths and weaknesses depending on the situation. They are both fantastic cameras and you can’t go wrong with either. Side note. Can you link me to the canon conversion luts? Thanks
exactly my point!

@@damiencooper legendary thank you. Keep up the great work.
Canon: colours and ease of use
and Dynamic range apparently ;)
@@damiencooper
Yess Boss
Forgot that😉
interesting to hear different opinions... canon fans will mostly use the " canon colours" argument all the time :P anyhow. and anyway...there is a reason the vast majority of professionals in media and tv use sony not canon... for one does it all camera that is... other than that you choose the right tool for the project....and c300 mk3 and c70 are great tools...
Why don't you try blackmagic? I am a Sony user for all my client work. And I was thinking about the Ursa 12k!
It's very ugly looking but seems like it has everything!
been there! Switched back to Canon for a lot of reasons
@@damiencooper A video on that would be good. Would love to know why you switched from Blackmagic.
@@dna8269 I have a video about black magic pocket worth it in 2021. I touch on most reasons why I’m not using it anymore
You can just buy an fx6 and a7s3 for the gimbal shot… same sensor.
not really. FX3 maybe closer. From what I've seen the A7SIII has a whole different color scheme
@@damiencooper Really? Looks very similar to me in post with a minor tint shift
Compleatly agree with you - the biggest problem are sony colours! That's why i selled my sony a7sIII and going with C70:)
can't go wrong with the C70
Better with canon
Thanks for sharing. No sony for me.
Good to know about file size, I always shoot ipb lite on my R5 and it still 422 10bit, but size is comparable other other cam shooting 420 8 bit. But yeah embrace for angry Sony hoard😅
9:05 She has such a cool look!
Grasping for any minor reason why you don't like it. Let's be real you just rented it to make this video.
If that's what you think you don't know me at all :D
I already switched from Canon to Sony, back to Canon, to Blackmagic and back to Canon :D I just buy whatever does the best job! If it would've been Sony, I would've switched again. Especially now that Canon is changing all it's lenses anyway
ehh, Just from the comments alone. Yes everyone is entitled to an opinion. but 95% of you don't have the content to back up your complaints. How much dynamic range do you need to shoot your dog running in the yard LOL no camera is perfect, everyone has their own needs. But i notice the trend of these hobbyist picking apart every detail but ya'll shoot bugs on a flower, some mediocre "dealership" video or some random person in your family staring in the lens. FX6 seems comfortable for handheld, amazing image quality, and the ease of use with internal ND filters and auto focus. At the end of the day, does you footage have a feeling? are you great at your craft? Because these cameras are just tools, that help make the the thought a reality, for yourself or the client.
Very true. I've noticed that the people that are usually debating gear the most, on average, are the ones with the worst content/videos/films/whatever.
@@dna8269 100%
If you're buying a $6000 cinema camera I'm going to assume you're shooting professional shoots, not your dog.
Autofocus and variable eND are the game changers for me. Plus the price difference is big.
very good points. The fact it only goes up to 7 instead of 10 is a deal breaker for me currently shooting in Mexiko, traveling to Vegas next
The price difference isn't big...?
You are missing out. The FX6 is extraordinary.
While I understand the points you made, some of the things you mentioned are just nit picky as hell haha
