Doctor Who - The Greatest Show in the Galaxy - Invitation

- The Doctor and Ace get invited to the Psychic Circus. From episode 1 of "The Greatest Show in the Galaxy." Includes Seven juggling and playing spoons and Ace trying on Four's scarf and Mel's jacket from "Paradise Towers."
Ace looks sooo cute wearing the Doctor's scarf - You can almost forget that she can blow shit up whilst grinning. *Almost*. XD
I think the 7th Doctor needs to install AdBlock plus into the TARDIS' data core
why would he/she do that, based on this and Kerblam the Doc loves consumerism, look how annoyed he was when Ace was talking over the ad.
@@theyellowlightsaber3193 he wasnt annoyed at her talking over the ad moreso surprised she wasnt interested in the circus. also i think youre mistaking a passion for consumerism with the doctors enthusiasm for a good fez
@@SorchaSublime Clearly Im not since apart from her enthusiasm about Kerblam the company he shows more than enough interest in the commercial here. And yes he was annoyed at her talking over the ad since he was trying to hear what it was so none of your corrections stand.
Keep your eye on McCoy's face and all the very subtle mannerisms and reactions - from mischievous to curious, frightened, intrigued, and even a little bit smarmy/cheeky when the robot plays reverse psychology - all because the Doctor wants to go and Ace doesn't.
There was definitely a touch of Colin Baker here with the childish annoyance at Ace talking over the ad and the furtive glances of mischief as he could see how the ad was using reverse psychology to get her to see the circus.
He just looks beautiful and lovely the entire time whichever facial expression he has and he sticks his little hip out when he sits down and then he starts spanking his beautiful thigh and back of his neck with bits of metal even though you didn't ask him to.
Not quite. Everything he is doing is a double/triple bluff. He knows he is being followed & watched & he is 99% sure by whom. Theres 2 key things. When Ace says things dont vanish, The Doctor agrees then the ball he is juggling disappears. This is a metaphor because Ace disappeared from Earth & ended up on Ice World. But the most important scene, watch as the advertisement machine says "Scared to go to the psychic circus?" to Ace in a DIFFERENT voice to a few seconds earlier. Now look at The Doctor's face smiling in the background. You may think at first he is amused at the machine for taunting Ace, but that's not what is happening. He is smiling because all his suspicions have been confirmed. He knows the voice is that of Fenric & he now knows Ace is one of the Wolves of Fenric & a pawn in its game with The Doctor. Checkmate. The Doctor has now won the centuries old game against Fenric because Fenric has made the worst mistake possible: it underestimated The Doctor. He made his 7th incarnation kind of slight, kind of clownish & Fenric chose this Doctor to resume its battle with because he thought The Doctor had gone soft. And he made a terrible mistake because when all is said & done the 7th Doctor is one of the most dangerous. So he smiles & the audience thinks he is smiling for another reason but look closely & you will see the truth. EXCELLENT performance by Sylvester & Sophie here.
Hiding behind Ace when the robot moves is reminiscent of the 2nd Doctor
Such a shame these two somehow went so unloved that she show ended during their run. I think they're pretty great.
They were both fine. They didn't have much to work with though.
Yeah. McCoy should return for a few specials.
These two were a joy to watch there are some great stories in 7ths last season too bad JNT interfered too much with the scripts causing poor quality stories.
McCoy was fantastic during his brief appearance in the 90s movie. It's a real shame that his character during the series was "We'll just have him flip and flop about depending on what plot hole we need filling".
What an absolute waste of potential.
I loved Sophie Aldred but she's so bad!
Sylvester McCoy was my Doctor and I loved Doctor Who back then. But it had TONNES wrong with it.
It was hammy, silly and just treated very cheaply.
It was run by people who had no idea of its potential with actors like McCoy being criminally underused.
I'm glad it's back but I'm sad that this iteration never really had a chance to be good.
As an aside, my favourite book story was the Paradise Towers one. I couldn't believe the look and tone of the TV version when I finally saw it a few years ago.
Ever get the feeling that this episode was written specifically to show off Sylvester's unique skillset...
I love it when Ace is raiding the Doctor's Wardrobe, it would've been cool if she threw an old bag of Celery out.
Carter Gonzalez
Despite bloody well hating those callback scenes, what you suggest would have me rolling. And I was rolling after reading that, thank you for brightening up my day!
The scarf was a really nice touch, but a bag of celery would have just been silly.
Even if there is, it should be dried and rotten by then.
More appropriately, a tacky Cat pin. 🐈
She does try on and discard one of mel’s tops hahaha
I love these sweet little scenes in the TARDIS. McCoy and Aldred had such great chemistry, and this really gives the sense that they are two close friends on a thrilling adventure through time and space.
Yes, and both of them have been working in Children's TV.
Ace at the beginning has an almost childlike appearance, still very much like the teenage waitress she was when we first meet her. Through her two seasons, we watch as her appearance and manner steadily becomes more adult. Subtle changes that show her growing into a woman to complement her character development in the scripts. The Ace we see by the end of "Survival" is all grown up.
What's funny though Sophie Aldred who played Ace is actually a year older than Bonnie Langford who played Mel.
Ace: Things don't just vanish
Doctor: ...No.
[Looks up when realising the ball has vanished]
What happens in the video happens in the video
they were soooo good together!
Yes. Yes they were. And still ARE. McCoy & Sophie are still good friends to this day. He did save her from a very nasty accident, after all, and they always had great chemistry.
I know! Too bad some of their stories are so bad.
@@cste1845 that time was bad for dr who. BBC really hated the show. Lucky we got the good stories we did. Mel was a Cringefest
@HolyFrell The new Script editor Andrew Cartmel, start to work on the show when McCoy started. He came up with the idea that if ACE called him profesor most of the time. But only called him doctor if she was really scared or worried about someting. Then when she did call him doctor the fans will know its serious.
i love how seven switches from being all fatherly and protective to being childish and cunning around ace. absolutely love it!
The 5th Doctor unraveled the purple scarf that the 4th Doctor wore in the 80s, the one that Ace was wearing was one of the ones he wore in the 70s.
0:44 Look me in the eye and tell me that's not an earlier model Kablam! delivery bot...
ITS A KERBLAM MAN
oh shit yea your right
"You're just making sounds now!"
I thought the same thing!
This scene reminds me directly of Kerblam, the Doc seems to love consumerism
I don't think there's been a better team than Ace and The 7th Doctor
How did you get away with this posting have no replies for *Twelve Years!*
What about #4 and Sarah Jane Smith?
Or, K-9?
Or, #3 and Jo Grant, or #2 and Jamie?
Anyone else want to add their candidates, too?
@@TheNoiseySpectator Ali and the 9th Doctor.
@@TheNoiseySpectator yeah what about 11 and amy or clara or 4th and harry or romana 1 or 2 or 8th and grace or 10th and donna or 5th and adric or 12th and bill
The concept for this episode delights me ngl
I see a little bit of McCoy's doctor, plus the smugness of Colin in Capaldi's
Funny thing, I see the 1st doctor in all of the doctors you mentioned. I found funny people say that Hartnell wasn't an inspiration (even if unwanted) for other doctors. I could easily see Hartnell delivering most lines of the 6th doctor.
@@doctorwhofanaudioplays8310 Really? Even "unseemly outbursts"?
Nothing is cooler than having your packed lunch strapped to your MC! 80's rad!
This Doctor was so much fun! Ace was an awesome companion, one of my favorites.
I always thought McCoy was a pretty good Doctor - and I must admit to fancying Sophie Adred at the time.
I love the way the Doctor teases Ace into going XD
McCoy started out iffy, with a goofy character and left-over C.Baker scripts, but transitioned into solid awesomeness as he went on.
I'll always be a big Sarah Jane fan... But c'mon... Ace beat the bloody hell out of Daleks with a juiced-up softball bat. That's right up there with knifing a Zontaran in the neck like Leela.
They should have McCoy on the new series... Maybe he could let us know what happened to Ace!
Ace became a buisness woman and humanitarian
Some day that ball is going to reappear out of thin air just when the Doctor needs it. The TARDIS is like that.😁
My second favorite McCoy story, next to the excellent Remembrance of the Daleks.
Great team. Glad they both get the love they deserve now
The 7th Doctor had some great bizarre stories and that ticket taking robot freaked me out when I was young.
There was something about this particular series. The McCoy era actually had some of the most menacing and disturbing storylines in the whole of Doctor Who. Seems they were going more psychological than "action", though there was plenty of action. Most of the episodes were just creepy because they hit something inside you.
Ah I miss these two. This was my introduction to Doctor Who as a child and I loved it, though this particular episode terrified me :D
the music is so eeree it creates the perfect mood
I love Sylvester McCoy Seventh Doctor.
Such a great Doctor and great companion. Some of the scariest stories in this era.
childhood memories galore these two really worked well together shame show was cancelled just when it was getting really good
If Ace wants tigers, wait until she gets to "Survival".
We only got brief TARDIS scenes during McCoy's era and only one in each of seasons 25 and 26 so they're that more precious.
Is it weird that I'm fascinated by the hanging hatstand next to the scanner?
Yeah, I thought that he left it in frontios.
And the hanging book he’s reading lol
ive seen her ruck sac, the last time i saw it she threw it in the cyberman spaceship witht he nitro nine to blow it up the story before LOL
You're in the pssyyyyyyy...you're in the psychic circus!
And I say welcome to the show!
@Smallvillenerd i totally agree with you and the fact they linked the chess set in silver nemesis with the one in the next season in curse of fenric was pure genious, as for the new series hovering daleks, well that came from 7th doctor's story remembrance of the daleks
This was the last appearance in the classic series of this control room set which had been in use since The Five Doctors. However the actual console, also used since The Five Doctors, made its final appearance in Battlefield the following year.
My favorite doctor , my favorite companion , my tardis team - awesome!
Ace was adorable! It's too bad the inside of the Tardis looked like a rundown house at this point. You can see the dust on the wall rounders.
They threw the set out after this one.
I had no idea how short Sylvester was until I actually met him.
Love the Doctor hiding behind Ace when the robot moves. Presumably he wouldn't do that if he thought it was actually dangerous, so he's having fun with her :)
A bit reminisant of Troughton's Doctor
Ace though... 😍
Like McCoy, love Ace.
haha! You've got to love the Grill-o-lunchbox on the bike xD
This is so much better than New Who.
Last appearance of that lovely Tardis console room.
When the junk mail talks back i always think its the Doctor manipulating it....his darker side coming through :D xx hehe
this is one of my favorite storys out of doctor whos history but when i watch it, it give me the creeps
Yes, I remember the story called Ghostlight one of my favourites. Now that was very creepy. Remember the "Let's Go Down To The Zoo" song? For some reason that song still gives me shivers.
Ghost Light & Curse of Fenric were deliciously dark and creepy - and both dug deeper into 7 & Ace's characters. There's a reason why Ghost Light is still quite popular despite being a poorly cut/edited mess that left its viewers confused - and that's because the atmosphere was spot-on and it was more character driven than your average Whovisode.
'Yes junk mail is everywhear" you got that right doctor
"Junk mail that talks back!"
Even tho I love all Doctors, and companions, yes, even Dodo, Doctor 7 and Ace was my favorite tardis team.
@tmofee The walls were damaged in a fire after this, so the next series opener 'Battlefield' had the tracing paper roundels.
For' Greatest Show In The Galaxy' they had to move the set out of the studio as there was a problem with asbestos. So this scene in the Tardis was filmed in the tent in the carpark.
Ah, I thought "The Greatest Show in the Galaxy" was a reference to Dr. Who.
McCoy and Ace were great
the 2nd doctor played the recorder now the 7th plays the spoons....
Le Docteur and Capaldi plays the electric guitar
Seeing ace with the Tom Baker scarf make me breathe in nostalgia
the motorbike scene. i love how unashamedly EIGHTIES DW was in , well, the 80s
you know i don't think enough ppl, and maybe this is partially due tot he awesome leather jacket, appreciate just how downright sexy ace was.
We own that trike its name is Longlife and it is a Desperate Dan trike by Chris Ireland. search Longlife and A66 monster bike.
Wasn't crazy about the storyline of this one. But I was impressed at how the bar had been raised on the special effects.
5 unravelled the maroonish one that 4 wore in the later seasons with his maroon coat etc. :)
By the way, I have to say that Sylvester McCoy is really quite handsome in this scene xP
Go Ace! Ace is my fav companion and I LOVE her. McCoy isn't too bad himself! Ace is, well, ace!
@MrClassicDoctorWho My husband owns it , its called Longlife , It was built by a friend of ours called Chris Ireland for his x company Desperate Dan. Search Longlife and A66 Monster Bike . We bought it off ebay and restored it. It is a 5 wheeled trike or quike .
Watch McCoy from 2:18 on, he is NOT doing what he appears to be. He is not smirking at Aces reaction to the beacon, he has just won one match in a very important battle & cant keep his delight to himself. He is in control of the entire situation & manipulating Ace without her (or the audience) realizing. That is what makes The 7th Doctor the most ruthless & dangerous of all the characters incarnations.
Apparently Ace was gonna be in the sja i herd it on a interview last year on youtube awe man I can't beleave they didn't Ace and remberance was the 1st colour story i watched so im so gonan get the figure of here looks epic
a nice trike and a nice burger from the bbc staff canteen
Love Ace and the doctor so much
Did these two ever make Dominie videos or was that just audio? I hear Ace almost made a reappearance on The Sarah Jane Adventures. So sorry it didn't happen. Perhaps there should be an Ace Adventures program...
She was going to but then Elisabeth Sladen suddenly passed away 😢
Greatest show in the Galaxy is one of my fave stories coz it's pretty scary. lol
Ah bugger we're getting season 24 and not 25! The huge leap in quality is hard to fathom.
im 21 and own this on vhs, and still watch it all the time
Now you're 29
If you think about the 13th Doc in Kerblam she/he seems to enjoy consumerism based on 7's reaction here and 13's in Kerblam, good continuity.
oh no not the spoons again....
Fact: The TARDIS interior in this episode was actually filmed in a tent
Ace = enneagram counter-phobic 6 fixated. Taking on her fears.
"I'm not scared of anything." I don't doubt it, Ace. Now Mel, on the other hand . . .
Fuck the sonic screwdriver! Real Time Lords play with spanners!
After a long run of wimpy, wet and screaming companions (I hated Mel), Ace was a breathe of fresh air, would love to see her come back to the TV series.
this was the last show shown in more then one part of the 25th series, in four parts between Dec 1988 and jan 1989
One of my favorite stories
We need a reunion episode where they make it in modern day but it explains what happened to them, where Ace went and how the 7th Doctor needed up with the Master in the movie and how the TARDIS redid herself to what it was in the movie. The story would age the Doctor and Ace to explain that they are older (or appear older anyway)
My 3 favorite Doctors:
1) David Tennent
2) Tom Baker
3) Sylvester McCoy
Funny that 2 out of the 3 are Scottish!
My 3 favorite Doctors:
1) David Tennent
2) Tom Baker
3) Sylvester McCoy
it was all done in a tent
I was so in love with acr when I was nine.
Ace is so cute
Did I just hear her call the Doctor, Professor?
It's Ace's nickname for the Doctor.
@keiracounsell Haha yeah, afaik the running order of season 25 was rearranged, so maybe Silver Nemesis was supposed to come after Greatest Show.
Sylvester mccoy is one of the most lovely, beautiful guys that could ever possibly exist. He's like a supermodel that was literally perfect the whole time he was on the show. The end of this episode is him fully bending over in midair and showing alllll of his stuff off but the highlight is actually almost the bit when he's eating the fruit at the start, because his face is just sooooo beautiful and nice and perfect in that bit.
i remember being terrified of this one when i saw it on UK TVGOLD, when i was little :)
There’s a lot of dirt on the roundals.
ace was gonna be in sarah jane adventure but liz died from cancer i now hate cancer
MrFletcherrenn I know it's so sad
JNT had a hard-on for putting things like that in his stories.
Ace is second to Amy as the most beautiful assistant in the TARDIS!
No female assistant was as full figured during the Doctors 1980s years as PERI (.Y.)
ace and peri....the golden years of ass-sistants
Ace blew shit up though.
Gorgeous Sylvester McCoy !
at this point ( and quite before ) the Doctor KNOWS something is all too bleeped up 🤨
The scarf!
