What is deflected narcissism? I know what narcissism is but saying its "deflected" is oddly specific and I haven't been able to find how that differs from normal narcissism.
If I were to wager a guess, deflected narcissism involves a way of thinking and arguing designed to protect your inflated self-image, and instead put the focus of a given conversation on the other person, even if you know you did something wrong. Not an uncommon trait actually, we learn this from the adults in our lives, even as better parents try to teach their kids otherwise.
@@Skyfighter64 Clara was always upfront if she did something wrong. She straight up admitted to Danny that she was "a bit up myself", she was fully aware that betraying the Doctor in Deep Breath was wrong, and before walking to her death in Face the Raven, she completely accepted responsibility for her own mistake. If your description of deflected narcissism is correct, it's much more applicable to Peter Capaldi's Doctor. He never apologised for treated Clara like crap throughout Season 8 and outright projected his own shittiness onto her when he whined that "You betrayed my trust, you betrayed our friendship, you betrayed everything I ever stood for. You let me down". The icing on the cake of that staggering lack of self-awareness was when he said that CLARA was the one doing the whining, even though she just let him vent without complaint. That kind of behaviour is something you would find in an abusive relationship and Capaldi only barely managed to make up for it with his willingness to "Go to Hell" for Clara's sake. Clara only let the Doctor down ONCE and that was after she lost her boyfriend and put up with Capaldi being a total arsehole for an entire season. Season 8 Capaldi was a terrible Doctor, not because of his acting but because the character Steven Moffat wrote was NOT the Doctor. John Hurt was a better Doctor in one episode than Capaldi was in his entire first season and Hurt was outright ashamed of calling himself the Doctor. Capaldi didn't become the Doctor until The Zygon Inversion in Season 9 and that was 21 episodes after his introduction.
