Aah, those were the days when they used the monitor to actually look outside before exiting the TARDIS.
I think the idea was to have the screen on the one console panel serve as the monitor, but for some reason the production team never followed through with it.
@Everything Cool This console is the same as the first TARDIS and the monitor that's on it is actually along the side the controls. You would have to look downwards on it to see it. The other console the fourth doctor uses has a big monitor on the wall. goo.gl/images/utg69F
@@DarkAvatar1313 in truth, the TARDIS console being used during the Tom Baker era Into the Peter Davison era; is not the original.
During Jon Pertwee's time on the show; the console was slowly remodeled from the one used during Hartnell and Troughton's time as The Doctor.
I believe the last time the Original console was seen in story was in the episode Inferno.
After that, The Doctor was constantly working on it and upgrading it in his attempts to cut his exile short and be free from being stuck in one specific time period.
By the 10th Anniversary episode "The Three Doctors" he had a redesigned and upgraded console when The Timelords commuted his exile and unlocked the mental barrier they had placed in his mind that kept him from using the Dematerialization codes to take-off.
Also, early in his first season, The Third Doctor builds a brand - new Demat Circuit but can't access the codes locked in his mind to use it.
Finally, by the time Tom Baker joins the show; the BBC Props Dept has built a new console (the one pictured in the Dr. Who Technical Manual published in the mid 80's) . The Baker / Davison console would not be upgraded again until "The Five Doctors 20th Anniversary" episode in 1983.
I know right. Nowadays they just seem to charge out of the TARDIS without making any kind of checks. Considering how often the TARDIS misbehaves they should've at least ran out in the middle of some highly irradiated planet by now.

Sarah was absolutely adorable. She was just the sort of light-hearted counterbalance the Doctor sometimes needed, without being an airhead or fluffy.

One of my favourite stories. Sometimes Elizabeth Sladen and Tom Baker improvised in certain scenes. There's a scene later in this story where Sarah and the Doctor walk in a room in the pyramid on Mars, see Marcus Scarman and the servitor robots, turn around in union and leave before they're spotted. The director left in because both actors convinced him it was: a) a nice bit of humour in an otherwise serious scene. b) something their characters would do.
Those two just bounced off one another perfectly.
Lis mentioned in her autobiography that they had suggested it to the director who was like 'It's way too risky, don't do it. And the pair of them did it in one take. Straight out of Monkey Business

to me it seems like in this scene the doctor starts to remember that he will out live all of his companions, which is why he seems sad and he talks about how old he is
Oh, absolutely. He's just being aloof and arrogant to hide how painful it is. But Sarah sees through it. She knows how ridiculous he's acting, but she gets his meaning, anyway.
No, that's not at all what it's about. Ugh New Who has so much emotion and angst. He's saying he's tired of hanging around 20th century earth all the time, about time he found some other place or time to go visit. Because you know, he actually did that in the classic series.

Nostalgic about Victoria? Yes. That was the point of the line. (Also because the show had a low budget and reused costumes, so they added it in incase any shrewd fanboy caught on).
But aloof and arrogant to hide pain? Please, that's not the Doctor's style at all. That's all from Tom Baker's own personality. He's very prideful and arrogant, and simply takes charge of any situation, and he brought that to the fourth Doctor.

For another thing, in the early 1970s, no one was worried about ''shrewd fanboys'' bringing up companions clothing from 10 years prior.
rose or martha would have been pissed off and jealous when if they had tried on a dress, then the doctor said another companion wore it. sarah jane's cool about it

elisabeth Haraldsson Rose is often referred to as the compassionate companion, however, whenever I think of compassion, I always think of Donna begging the Doctor to save someone on Pompei. Or that moment when she hears the song of the Oods and she starts crying, but she also notices that the Doctor doesn't have the ability to unhear that song. But, nothing like those moments come to mind when I think of Rose.

Flying Monkey Rose is my 4th favorite companion. (Donna, Clara, Martha and then Rose.) I don't hate her, but I don't find her compassionate. That's all I'm saying, Rose, however, at times does act immature. But as she's only 19, that's to be expected. But as I was asking, is she really the compassionate companion or is that title better suited for Donna?
Honestly, who didn't love Sarah Jane? The Doctor is being melodramatic and she just smiles at him. So much better and cooler than some of the recent companions
She's okay, but overated by the fanbase. And frankly she became too much of a damsel during Tom's run.

MrDirectorAgent yeah it’s called the Sarah Jane Adventures and was a spin off to Doctor Who which ran from 2008 to 2011 due to Elizabeth Sladen’s tragic passing of cancer the same year, while I prefer the parent show it’s actually a pretty good spinoff and a lot more accessible compared to the other two spinoffs which are Torchwood and Class
This is what I call Dr Who. Pyramids of Mars is classic TV. The Doctor could be jokey back then but the threat was always real, and the viewer knew it.
Jokes featured prominently in Shakespeare's tragedies.
I like the real Physics in this story at the end when the TARDIS beats a radio signal from Earth to Mars.
I agree. I think it helped that the threat was not known by the general population. It gave it an added layer of realism, of even though we know it didn’t really happen this theoretically could be a documentary, but it’s played as fiction because nobody would believe it. The quieter, slower, more strategic menace has always been more frightening than the loud, fast, bombastic menace. And while the first time you have a spaceship hit Big Ben it may have a certain visual appeal, eventually the number of newsworthy Doctor stories are not only reminders that the story for sure isn’t real, they also create at least a London that has to start treating all of these dangers as business as usual, so even in the fictional world they have lost their impact.
You do know this is the same hell this might even be the same season as the bubble wrap monster right judging by the Tardis and the presence of Sarah Jane Smith this is early fourth doctor so pretty close to the bubble wrap monster

I just love the implications of this show. I know he probably means the companion Victoria but honestly this is the Doctor and whos to say he hasn't traveled with the Queen.

Hannah Marie I believe the Doctor was referring to Victoria Waterfield, played by Deborah Watling, who travelled with the second Doctor (Patrick Troughton). She wore such a dress in her first story, “The Evil of the Daleks”.

Ah...this brings back memories! The young, always lovely Liz Sladen wearing Troughton's companion, Victoria's dress, Tom Baker-who was always excellent and a cool, creepy, well-written and directed story. I have this in my DVD collection and will have dig it out and enjoy it again some time. Still my favorite era of WHO.
I much prefer the old days 'outer space drifter' Doctor to the new Who's 'cosmic superhero' Doctor.

Winston Smith Sarah Jane (particularly with the shorter hair in her first season) looks just like an ex of mine. My heart breaks a bit everytime she's on screen.
The "Cosmic Superhero" Doctor actually started with Four, believe it or not, specifically during the Graham Williams era. It's just not as noticeable because he became a much more vulnerable character when JNT took over, with his immediate successor being arguably the softest of the classic Doctors. I think the Cosmic Superhero archetype was carried over to the Revival Series because that's what Four was like for most of his run, and Four just happens to be the most popular and most iconic Doctor among fans.
The trends of the new series actually started near the end of the classic series's life. If you look at the Seventh Doctor's last two seasons, you'll notice storytelling & cinematographic styles that wouldn't be out of place in New Who, particularly with the Fenric arc that ends in the most New Who way possible *in 1989*.
Elizabeth Sladen was one of those lucky women that looked better with age. R.I.P Elizabeth,

I never noticed that at 1:20 his hand was right on top of the flash bang that went off... He recovered that nicely in my opinion. Those things hurt when they go off... even a little one.
Definitely hurt him. You can see his hand twisted in pain for a bit. But actors were professionals back then. "The show must go on" stage mentality was an asset. Everything is too edited and schizophrenic these days.

Wow! This was the into to the battle with Sutek, one of those "inter dimensional beings posing as a deity to boss around the ancient Egyptians" stories! One of my favs!
This is a great example of something the Baker era did so marvelously well: manage a difficult balance of simultaneously having fun with the character, right down to others mocking him, yet still keeping his authority and cosmic "otherness" in place. They had fun but still had that backdrop of seriousness that could give you chills. None of that could have worked without the titanic performance of Tom Baker, who rode that delicate line perfectly, leaping nimbly back and forth over it from moment to moment. There are other Doctors I love, especially Pertwee, but in this regard Baker was never matched, before or since.

That's kinda the way DW was back in the day. I remember Sylvester McCoy walking away from an explosion, his back actually *on fire* because he was too close when it went off, and finishing the scene because he knew there couldn't be a second take on it. :)

If you remember Genesis of the Daleks when they were opening up that safe, something fell out that wasn’t supposed to and Tom quickly improvised and made like a “shush” motion and Elizabeth rolled with it. Those two made great improv duo.

@@Mortlupo really have to commend classic Doctor Who because they didn’t have the luxury of reshoots in case something went wrong like modern Who does. Those actors were the masters of their craft.
This Episode of Dr Who is on of my favorites. The Pyramids of Mars. Tom Baker and Elisabeth Sladden totally rocked this episode.

Fantastic Story, Sutekh was a really powerful villain for the 4th Doctor!

Sutekh still is really powerful, remember the gods of ragnarok with the 7th doctor in a comic sutekh and the gods of ragnarok fight in a 3v1 and sutekh is shown causally overwhelming them by himself

Which seems strange, since time lords can live for tens of thousands of years. He's barely even a teenager.
Tom baker was barely middle aged here. Only 41. Interesting how, in the 7 years his was doctor, you could see his hair, turn from brown to silver.

Depending on what background info you read; a standard Timelord lifecycle of 12 Regenerations (lived out in one place and one specific time period) will last about 6,000 yrs. barring unforeseen circumstances or accidental Death and dismemberment.
In the episode "The Brain of Morbius" it is implied that The Doctor has had several more lives than what has been seen or written about to that point.
And the current multimedia adventures of The Doctor only chronicle The Doctors' (personal) timeline since leaving Gallifrey of a little over 2,000+yrs. (I'm deliberately leaving out the Peter Capaldi episode "Heaven Sent" where he spends several Billion years breaking out of his Confession Dial in a timeloop of Death and Resurrection, before finding and returning to Gallifrey which was hidden at the end of the Universe and the end of Time).
When Timelords live like the Doctor does, the tendency is to Regenerate more often.
The Master / Missy, used up every Regeneration cycle they were given. In the 7th Doctor episode:"Survival" The Master's stolen body (Tremas of The Traken Union; Nyssa's Father) is all used up. He appears one more time in the 1996 Doctor Who TV movie trying to steal the Doctors' remaining lives.
In The Time War, he's given a whole new Regeneration cycle that he burns through before he becomes Missy who he mortally wounds in the episode:"The Doctor Falls" as she does the same to her previous self which is how she came to be. But it's ultimately their end as he will not allow his future self to be tainted and defiled by the Doctors' attempt to rehabilitate them.

My favorite Doctor ever ..Tom Baker. I watched his entire run in the very early 80s. Each weekend I looked forward to this being on tv.
Hey cool! I watched his entire run in the late 80s! 1988-1990 to be precise.
It was on weekdays on The Afternoon Show with James Valentine on ABC. Doctor Who was two months on, two months off, with 4th Doctor showings alternating with new broadcasts and cumulative repeats of the 7th Doctor.
Life was good. Why did it have to change?
I happened to find Doctor Who on PBS in the States just as Mr. Baker was starting out in _Robot_ in early-1975. I watched that series and then something distracted me and I was pulled away from the show until late in 2021. I found it again on BritBox and was amazed to remember some particular scenes especially the parts of _Robot_ that were recorded outdoors. I'm still in awe of finding it again after more that 46 years. I still have the rest of Tom Baker's turn as Dr. Who and all Doctors on either side of him.

Especially Tom bakers version of the Doctor, he's so weird and alien at times, I love it!
Remember he is a time traveler, he could be 750 years old, go on a trip and come back tomorrow being over 1200 years old.

I love that this basic set still does the job.....the doc and his mate travelling through time and space not always sure where they'll end up. Not like today's Tardis console room, which is more like a carnival float to be honest.

@@sheridan5175 months later but yeah that one actually has a lot of decorations in it which is accurate my favorite cotorras are probably the 12th doctors the first doctors in the war doctors as they all have that spaceship bill but the 1st and 12th have aspects that make you feel lived-in while the War Doctor has that organic and cobbled-together add-ons if I could have random decorations and coral and random controls attached to a more spaceship-like artist it would be perfect

Of all the Fourth Doctor's coats, this dark red overcoat is my favourite.
One of the best scenes in DW history. Sarah puts a pin in the Doctor's ego. This was great in showing that though the Doctor is not human, his human companion does not see him as a god. Sadly, the new production elevated the Doctor to god like status. Egos are big in the 21st century, pun intended.

That is always a terrible excuse, because it is indeed a choice. Imagine how much worse things would be if parents acted like their babies, or schools restricted the curricula to what students already knew. The best media tries to bring the audience up to its level.
I found the problem - it's this string, it's making the TARDIS all wibbly woobley.
This is 300 years after he traveled with Victoria. That face... his ghosts are beginning to catch up with him, maybe for the first time.

Aww, just look at her sweet face in those first few frames at 0:17, smiling a broad grin as she scurries in delight and excitement to show off the dress. You can imagine that excitement and fixed smile all the way from the vast wardrobe and through the many turns and corridors until she reached the Console Room. What a dear Sarah (and Lis) was.

Still my favourite episode in the show. Talons of Weng Chiang comes a close second along with Horror of Fang Rock.
All three were at the peak of the show's writing. The Deadly Assassin (?) was also very good.
You know, I really like the way the Doctor Who episodes were written in this era, because they are much easier understand and follow. When I watch any episode after the year 2000, I always feel as though I'm on a roller coaster ride and struggling to hang on or follow the plot. In addition, today, their seems to be a real obsession with starting and ending a story all within the same episode.
Probably because in the 70s the Classic Series had the benefit of Serialized Story telling in that you could have a four to six part story where you can take the time to flesh out the world setting, the threat, how you're going to resolve the problem and then the last part deals with the climax.
Modern Day Television's gotta do it in one episode.
Pacing's gotta be faster and the story needs to be condensed out of fear that multipart stories won't draw in high viewing figures over the number of parts there are.
That being said there is something endearing about the whole idea of watching a Classic Doctor Who episode where you see a cliffhanger thinking "Oh man, I can't wait to see what happens next week in Part 2"
Oh mate, I couldn't agree more. The plots of the current episodes are rarely about 'something nasty in the woodshed that needs to be destroyed'....which is what made the series so addicitive when we were kids....now there are plots within plots which just pisses viewers off if they have just 'dipped in' to the programme one Saturday night.
@@TheSkully343 pacing does not need to be faster! That’s symptomatic of the modern era’s poor writing, along with style over substance. Contemporary successes like Blink ( the first Weeping Angel story) are slow paced and well written inho. In the classic era, many stories were poor but were mostly coherent. Not so now. The show has gone so far down the pan.
major part of the show's charm was the stellar acting and so-so special effects.

I love Liz Sladen in this scene. She's a breath of fresh air. She just walks in and lights up a room.
Two of my favourite DW moments ever. The music. The dialogue. The console room. Tom & Lis. It all comes together in this one.
They've some something similar with Tegan in "The Crimson Horror" - When the Doctor and Clara left the TARDIS, the Doctor mentioned travelling with "a gobbly Australian from Heathrow Airport" and then said "Brave heart, Clara!"
Bless Elisabeth Sladen. Not only does she make the rather silly dialogue totally believable, but her convincingly horrified reaction to the "mental projection" sells the cheesy effect. When she says it's totally malevolent, I believe it.
Even though this is decades old, its still creepy. I think most kids hid behind the sofa watching this show in the 1970s!

yes, it was its called story telling, something the classic era was VERY good at, even without big effects!

I don't think there is any question but that Elizabeth Sladden as Sarah Jane Smith was the best companion of all time. Many have come close, a tiny handful are just about her equal but no one else was ever better. Just think about the number of Doctors she got to work with!!! Plus she had her own spin off show along with K9. Even older she could hold her own with Rose Tyler, the instant chemistry she had with David Tennant and Matt Smith was amazing, she was such a professional. I would have loved to see her join the modern era series full time!

Pyramids of Mars, one of my all time favourite dr who stories. This era with Tom Baker and Elizabeth Sladen was the best classic dr who.

I've liked all the The Doctors companions, however I was my teens when Liz, Jo and Sarah Jane joined The Doctor. Sarah was the one I wanted to be even now, RIP Elizabeth Sladen.

That is a massive insult to Liz Sladen / Sarah Jane Smith. Donna Noble is the Jar Jar Binks of Dr Who, only more annoying and less sex appeal
Oh, get off the Donna hate. She had some annoying mannerisms, but she was also one of the most clever companions the Doctor had. Go back and count the number of insights and solutions she came up with over the course of her time with the Doctor. It'll certainly outnumber the ones Rose had.
Donna is in the top 10 companions of all time. Rose is worse than Adric and Chameleon combined.
What ThePapermage said is true, but even Donna isn't in Sarah Jane Smith's league in terms of brains and beauty though!
