2:32 The way The Doctor says Mel and his face whilst doing it, always gives me a tug on the heartstrings. And Mel's smile after it, always makes me happy.
I love those sad eyes the dr does when he realised he’s done something wrong and wants to apologise and can’t and wants to even the 12 th dr could do it I think through out it’s history of the show you got to love the dr the charioteer is such a big softy and so sweet I wish all rl drs and nurses were like him, I still don’t understand why they say that the dr will stand in the Ruins of gallofrey and rules it about the progeny of the hybrid I mean he’s never hurt anyone of anything he’d make a good ruler and we know he is a hybrid but I think the protect is wrong the dr is a good man. If he was tHe one tectay who started the time lords and regeneration goof on him through genetic experiments good on him giving birth to life going to a isolated planet and giving the planet life not takeing free will away from people I’d do the same prolonging life saving lives helping out shouldn’t be illegal as long as you don’t take anything against the persons free will or try not to be god should be fine marking life better for everyone is fine it should be fine the others way against their will trying to be god is bad and they say that he blow up gallifrey and than ok that was bad but he saved his race and the universe from suffering and death he couldn’t bear see his people suffer he didn’t want his people to suffer I mean he is half human after all to save lives lives must be sacrificed to save millions so he put them out there misery and saved them I would have done the same thing.
Bonnie was treated quite badly by the fans during her time on the show but she has gone on to have an extremely successful career, good luck to her. Don't forget that she was quite young here about 23
Yes which is why she should appear on New Who when at the end of the episode the Doctor finds the bottle she mentioned in her last appearance saying in time indeed.
Extremely successful is probably an overstatement, but she was a stage/panto actress with no shortage of roles, was in some of the more recent dance shows, is now in Eastenders and has also done some more Big Finish with the 7th (and probably other) Doctors. Not too bad if you ask me.
Green Whovian: From what I've heard, that *is* an extremely successful career for an actor - the famous faces you see on TV are rarer than lottery winners.
Watching the Doctor's embarrassment at having been fooled by the Rani while he was still confused after his violent regeneration, it makes sense that he went on to become the 'mastermind' type, always preparing ahead. In a way one could say he wanted to always have the upper hand from there on out to avoid something like that from happening again.
Do you know, I've NEVER thought of it that way before. But that actually fits really well. For me, while I love later, darker Seven, I was never that keen on how he started, or how much of a difference there was to his later stories. Nice one on coming up with a plausible reason why Seven changed so much after 'Time & the Rani".
7 doesn't lie, he just keeps EVERYTHING to himself. He barely even keeps his companion(s) in the loop - everyone, friend and foe, is a pawn in his game. This would be worse than lying if only for the fact that he does care deeply for his pawns, going on to be a father figure for his next companion and (against her better wishes) trying to help her overcome her fears and build her up, but doing so by dunking her into situations she fears and hates (without warning). Here he's confused due to the sudden regeneration and hasn't a clue what's going on -- later, he made it his business to ensure NOBODY BUT HIMSELF knew what was going on until he could say "Checkmate". The only notable exception to the 'lie' is his speech in Curse of Fenric where he has to go against Ace and almost literally break her heart and spirit, but this was a necessity.
I like the synth music that played when both the 7th Doctor and Mel were feeling each other pulses! Also including the part where the doctor says "Mel" with that emotional tone such a Wonderful scene!
Seriously, these two are a very underrated TARDIS team. It's quite a shame that they only got a few stories together (most of which were a bit rubbish). I'm glad they did some audios together.
I think I prefer the 7th Doctor as opposed to Radagast. I had already came to that conclusion before, but that was before I really got to see Sylvester McCoy in action as the Doctor. Now that I have, I can really say that I enjoy Sly McCoy as The 7th Doctor.
He gets even better after his first season. A little bit darker, secretive and more mysterious than most other Doctors, but he's definitely got a fun side, as well. (Also, slightly off topic: nice choice of avatar and username. Turbo Kid is AMAZING!)
I wasn’t really aware how talented Bonnie was until really this past year. For one thing she’s a remarkable dancer! Although here she’s still rather young and akin to Violet Elizabeth.
Bonnie Langford's indelible acting style has always revolved around exuberant stage performance since first gaining attention as a young child and is, of course, not in the least out of place when it comes to any high-profile theatrical presentation. Throughout the sixties and through much of the seventies one can freely observe that television performance by artists who had essentially originated in the world of the theatre was still quite acceptable in terms of the means of conveying their allotted characters to an audience via the TV screen. Sylvestre McCoy is another highly experienced comedy actor in that same rich tradition with a long list of stage credits to his name including many a leading role he was given by the prolific playwright and theatre director Ken Hill at the Theatre Royal Stratford East, including "Dracula" (as the Count himself), "Bloody Mary" (as a bold pirate), and "The Mask of Zorro". Needless to say, one invariably emerged from the theatre feeling thoroughly exhilarated after such outstanding productions as these.
I don't care what anyone says. I never thought I'd like Sylvester McCoy's Doctor. But now that I've seen him in action, he's my 4th favorite Doctor Who. (Granted there are things that I like about all of the Doctors). Remembrance of the Daleks is one of my favorite episodes.of all time.
I have never watched a Seventh Doctor Serial (currently trying to watch classic from the beginning, so far almost finished with second doctor) but Mel looks like an excellent companion
This is a fun scene. And Sylvester is great in it. Kate O'mara is great of course. And I've always felt that the Tetraps were a well realized monster/henchmen for the Rani.
I've been making my way through a lot of the classic clips the official DW channel has been putting into playlists. As someone who is completely new to the 7th Doctor, McCoy's take seems pretty fun, with a nice manic energy.
I haven't watched "Time and the Rani" in full, but from these clips it really doesn't seem all that bad. I actually like a lot of the lines in this, especially the amnesia one xD Can someone sum up what's so bad about the serial?
Oh, he appears right through the fourteen "Trial Of A Time Lord" series. If you do a search for it on UA-cam, you can see bits from him. He's the one in the skullcap being snide to the Doctor.
@kyon813 The Rani dressed up as Mel b) He was actually fine after the Regeneration - the Rani injected some weird stuff into him so she could use him for her plans. Somehow strange how the incarnations that follow directly after each other seem to be at opposite extremes of his core personality...
Doctor Who "rocked" back then. I much prefer the "low budget" appeal of the show as opposed to the just another "big budget special effects laden" sci fi series. "Cheesiness" is what lead to it's charm for me and why it earned such a huge cult following. They did what they could with the budget they had. I love this scene between the Doctor & Mel even though the 7th Doctor & Ace are my favorite. Fun Stuff!
What a lovely scene, wonderfully scripted and acted. I grew up watching McCoy but looking back, I'm starting to appreciate him all the more. I certainly won't be watching the modern show any more. It's gone totally off the rails and I'm through with it.
Sounds like you need another solid dose of Remembrance of the Dalek's and Curse of Fenric, spiced with some Greatest Show in the Galaxy and maybe even a pinch of Happiness Patrol or Battlefield. That'll put some spring in your Whovian step.
I'm watching both. People will come back to series 11 and 12 and appreciate them eventually, correcting for the things they didn't like just as we correct for the special effects, production, acting and direction when we watch the older series.
Um ... the Doctor lies. Though, to be fair, The Rani immediately recognised the Doctor and the Master before speaking to them in The Mark of the Rani...
@subbtopp IT would and the best thing is - she has made it clear that she wouldn't do anything "DW" related if she had to scream. She's improved a lot just having that stop - the audios are rather good.
Unpopular opinion on rating Classic Doctors from Best to Worst: Third >>> Four >>> SEVEN >>> Second >>> Six >>> First >>> Five Yes, I can't stand Five 🤷
First below Six? That is an unpopular opinion! I can't stand Five either, but I must admit I'm not a great fan of Seven. Lacks gravitas - the Doctor should be a bit scary when he needs to be, and Sylvester McCoy just isn't a scary person.
@Busterseyes I have to admit your reasonings are part of the reason I love the current run of the show with Matt Smith as the Doctor - I am glad they toned down the special effects this season. I don't mind some effects and the planets do look better with some CGI; however, I have felt a lot of times the first four seasons that there was TOO much of it.
Mel would‘ve been surprised if she had seen the Doctor regenerate with her own eyes, but she didn‘t due to being unconscious in the TARDIS when an explosion knocked them out just before the Rani hijacked the Doctor‘s ship.
The Valeyard was an aspect of the Doctor between his twelfth and final incarnations, and the Time Lords used him to try and condemn the Doctor to death, as he had knowledge of the Time Lords destroying almost whole life on Earth.
While Mel and the seventh Doctor IMHO weren't as strong as Seventh and Ace, this is quite a cute scene. I love how Mel flips the Doctor and the two fight. Given the Doctor has only had one person see him regenerate in recent times (Rose with the 9-10), this charm of how the companion reacts to seeing a new Doctor is missing. Plus - it seems they're more accepting of the Doctor now than in the past - save Amy and the current one.
@kyon813 He went from grumpy& irascible to hobo, from hobo to serious action-hero, from dandy to unkempt bohemian, from eccentric to dashing hero, from sensitive and pensative to determined and huge ego, from flamboyant to subtle, from cunning and icy to hopeless romantic, from gentle and naive to pragmatic, not-good-with-people and manic, from serious and moody to bubbly and pacifistic, and lastly, from constantly depressed to slighly harsh, open about his feelings and completely bonkers.
Mel was the best companion ever. It was this story that made me a Doctor Who fan. Has the best cliffhanger ever at the end of Part One, when Mel is trapped in a bubble.
She also got some revenge and pulled his hair when they both realized what was going on. You can be sure she also busted his (and everyone elses) ear-drums many times during the adventures that followed.
@Busterseyes Tell me about it! I'm STILL waiting for DOCTOR WHO to come back to TV because the "New" series(2004/Eccleston to Tennant) is more like a spin-off. The old series, for me, had more character (litterally!) because they had to be clever to make it work. The things they didn't have were time and money, so they used what they had in abundance... Talent and imagination! And the 7th Doctor and Ace were a GREAT team! Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred became my faves too!
@ericinwisconsin I agree it's out there, but there *is* a possibility that in the time that we don't see Mel and the Doctor together (the gap between Mindwarp and Terror of the Vervoids) there was a case where the Doctor nearly regenerated or was ill and warned her it could happen but didn't. It doesn't help a whole lot that Mel is one of the few companions - Susan the other I know of - who we meet already traveling with the Doctor.
Oh wow mysterious monster I’d love to see what it looks like.... On second thought this is 80’s Who and their working on a very tight budget so on second thought I really don’t want to see what it looks li..... Director: what was that u wanted to see the monster here u go Me: omg it looks like something out of Power Rangers Director: want to see extensive footage of it? Me: nooooooooo! Director: here u go
In Last of the Timelords The Master appeared to know about Rose absorbing the time vortex....even though they never actually met.. Also, in Logopolis the 4th doctor said that sometimes Timelords have the same mind. With the Rania being a Timelord (or Timelady) she would somehow know some of Mel's character.
the eyebrows, that's why i compare sylvester mccoy to scott bakula, the eyebrows, so similar. 2 time travelers one british, one american. both magical.
@ericinwisconsin She's been travelling with him for quite a while (tough mostly offscreen) so he must've told her sometime, perhaps before pulling some stunt where he wasn't sure whether he'd survive it.
2:32 The way The Doctor says Mel and his face whilst doing it, always gives me a tug on the heartstrings. And Mel's smile after it, always makes me happy.

I loved Bonnie Langford as Mel. I thought she was adorable.
honestly same, the screaming was annoying at times, but mostly she was ace! (i mean obviously not but you know what i mean)
@@dijrghgewr8g The actress is a delight to talk to. Some Who fans really need to get the stick out of their bums. She's such a sweet person.
I thought Mel screamed WAY too much. I know it's a Companion's job to get rescued by the Doctor, but come on.
She WAS. Corny, but adorable. 😄
I think she's more adorable now that the actor's older (see the season 24 boxset trailer)

+Green Whovian I can attest to that sentiment.

One of the best eras of the show is 7 and ace so I disagree
When Mel mentioned the changes she didn't seem to notice the doctor was Scottish now.
It's just a alien accent.

On the bright side, there are still audio stories expanding upon the Classic Doctors.
Needless to say, one invariably emerged from the theatre feeling thoroughly exhilarated after such outstanding productions as these.
sadly Kate O'mara passed away in 2014. She was a great actress who had a long and very successful career playing many different kinds of characters.
I think Mel is the cutest character on the show
Formerly a Time Lord companion, she's now living a normal life in Albert Square.
A giant rat with a lightsaber. I liked McCoy's expressions when Mel described how different he had become.
I have never watched a Seventh Doctor Serial (currently trying to watch classic from the beginning, so far almost finished with second doctor) but Mel looks like an excellent companion
I love the initial confusion whenever The Doctor regenerates - always fun!

Early on you get the energy and slapstick, later, you get the darkness - and it's wonderful!
EEE! The Doctor sounds so heartbreakingly adorable at 2:33! I love this show!
Kate O'Mara's performance as Mel is brilliant.
Umm, Kate O'Mara played the Rani, the character Mel is played by Bonnie Langford.
Playing the Rani pretending to be Mel. Its a tricky kind of thing for an actress to pull off as the Mel cannot be perfect. Kate does it well.
can't believe its 30 years ago when this came out
I haven't watched "Time and the Rani" in full, but from these clips it really doesn't seem all that bad. I actually like a lot of the lines in this, especially the amnesia one xD
Can someone sum up what's so bad about the serial?
The slapstick fight between the Doctor and Mel for one thing.
Frank Cabanski I found that rather entertaining, lol
I liked this story. I can't see what was wrong with it.
It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't good. The good thing is Sylvester showed he would make a good Doctor. He was very good.
+EconGeekProductions Fans have bad taste. They prefer the expanded universe to the actual show.

The 5's regeneration into 6 is probably the most dramatic example of a post regeneration freakout
Jon Pertwee's Doctor also suffered from post regeneration amnesia when he took over the role.

@Busterseyes
Ah they still have a budget in the new series. They often have to cut stuff they plan down to a mininum.
Oh wow mysterious monster I’d love to see what it looks like....
On second thought this is 80’s Who and their working on a very tight budget so on second thought I really don’t want to see what it looks li.....
Director: what was that u wanted to see the monster here u go
Me: omg it looks like something out of Power Rangers
Director: want to see extensive footage of it?
Me: nooooooooo!
Director: here u go
In Last of the Timelords The Master appeared to know about Rose absorbing the time vortex....even though they never actually met.. Also, in Logopolis the 4th doctor said that sometimes Timelords have the same mind. With the Rania being a Timelord (or Timelady) she would somehow know some of Mel's character.
Time and the Rani was origionally ment to have been a 6th Doctor story....obviously before Colin Baker was 'unfairly' dismissed.
Whenever the late classic doctors regenerate they later try to assault their female companion
And then she meets him again in his 14th incarnation in 2023
And his 15th
0:23 Mel just went sicko mode
Welp we can add professional wrestler on the Doctor's list of skills.
@TorterraMan3000 "Perhaps she's (Mel) fashion conscious..."
-The Rani
Pause at 1:26 his face
@CYBERDOODY, just out of curiosity what was voted 200th? Also, which story came 1st?
Just out of curiosity.
the eyebrows, that's why i compare sylvester mccoy to scott bakula, the eyebrows, so similar. 2 time travelers one british, one american. both magical.
@ericinwisconsin She's been travelling with him for quite a while (tough mostly offscreen) so he must've told her sometime, perhaps before pulling some stunt where he wasn't sure whether he'd survive it.
I love Mel so much
