just saying it to pleese the wrong side of fans you where probably one of the fans who left doctor who just because the doctor that left and the doctor replaced him was matt smith and left and came back in 2023 and probably leave again after the 60th has gone passed :I
I grew up with Jon Pertwee (despite being born in the '90s) and I will always go back his stories. I love the man of action, sarcastic wit and his interactions with the Brigadier, UNIT and above all, Roger Delgado's Master.
I would say that Pertwee's era is arguably the most consistent from start to finish. And many of the best stories in the entire history of the program. They had great writers during that time frame.
@@JasonGaylor-v6l Couldn't agree more. With many of the other incarnations I'll only like a small selection of stories and those will be the only ones I normally go back to. But I'll happily watch every Jon Pertwee serial. The only other Doctor I can really say that about is David Tennant I think.
@@jensonkiin3678 The one's I constantly go back to are Pertwee's and Tom Baker's first five seasons. I don't think Tennant's era is all that consistent though.
@@JasonGaylor-v6l That's fair. I think it's just the sheer energy and portrayal by Tennent that draws me back. But yeah, hard to find a bad Baker story in those early series. In my top three for sure.
My favorite is Matt Smith. None of the doctors made me laugh or cry more than he did. David Tennant is my second favorite and I wished Christopher Eccleston had more seasons because I enjoyed every second of his appearance as well.
I see why six was last but it’s a perfect way to show that the doctor gets a new personality upon regeneration not just small little tweaks but the way he thinks changes
My Best to Worst Doctors: 1. David Tennant 2. Tom Baker 3. Jon Pertwee 4. Matt Smith 5. Patrick Troughton 6. Peter Capaldi 7. Sylvester McCoy 8. William Hartnell 9. Christopher Eccleston 10. Peter Davison 11. Paul McGann 12. John Hurt 13. Jo Martin 14. Colin Baker 15. Jodie Whittaker Honorable Mention: David Bradley
I'm old enough to say that Tom Baker was my Doctor as a kid, as I grew up watching the show on PBS. I've been able to go back and watch a lot of the old serials, plus following most of the new series. I didn't take to Matt Smith as much of the younger fandom has. He was a bit to manic for my taste. I thought that Peter Capaldi has the right mix of sarcasm, wit, melancholy and fun to match Tom Baker.
You're right. Us old school fans are the best judges because we've seen the classic and modern series and we actually have better attention spans. So, we can tell the difference between substance and style. We can recognize great writing. Nothing touches 1970's Doctor Who! T. Baker and Pertwee forever!
Same here. I watched Tom Baker's Doctor on Chicago's WTTW every Sunday night. In those days, PBS was the way many of us were introduced to British TV. Monty Python, The Goodies, Fawlty Towers, No, Honestly, and of course, Doctor Who.
Because the votes are likely made by younger audiences who idolize Tennant as their first Doctor. Tennant is fine but should probably be a few spots below Baker imo.
@@JasonGaylor-v6l😂 Tennant is literally the improved version of Tennant I literally watched Classic Who ( Only Bakers ) just to see if they were good. They are identical but Tennant is a much improved version of Baker, If you can't deal with it maybe you need to rewatch if you even did, Classic Who.
I love David Tennant and let me say this I personally think that the thirteenth doctor they did her storyline wrong it didn't fit her Persona if they wrote a strong storyline that fit her Persona she will be way higher on the list
@@triplejazzmusicisall1883 okay you got to think about it if you get somebody that actually fitted her optimistic fun personality what does smidge of seriousness and is aiming towards the right direction you can have three Riders to do that that would have made her away more likable doctor and she would have been higher on the list that's all I'm saying
Fun fact: Patrick Troughton was the grandfather of Harry Melling, the actor who played Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter films. Harry has stated that he'd like to play the Doctor, too.
The Fourth Doctor is far and away the best for me Twelve is #2 followed by Nine at #3. The rest are all portrayed by fantastic actors as well and can be numbered in any order afterwards.
My first doctor was the Tenth. Was flipping through the TV and came across the episode "Silence in the Library". Didn't know what the show was, so immediately thought "Ooooh! Barry Crouch jr.!"Been a Whovian ever since. Also sad that Jodie's doctor didn't get to really show her potential. Jodie is such a great actress, in both drama (Broadchurch) and comedy (St. Trinians). Just a shame the writing made her doctor seem so....flat.
Matt will always be my doctor, as it was during his tenure I became a Dr Who fan. I have since watched all doctors and all episodes it is possible to watch. I find joy in every doctor. Yes, even Colin Bakers doctor😁
Colin Baker's Doctor started off rough, but the character evolved over the short time he had. It's a shame people seem to focus on the first few episodes he was in and ignore the rest.
@@wallacewallaby5782Yeah but those few episodes were absolutely horrible. Later on he progressed but the other doctors are leagues beyond him except the fugitive doctor.
Ten is my favourite and then eleven. The others are meh imo. Didn't watch Capaldi's run. Who didn't get a mention here. He can't have been that bad. I saw him in the one he was in with River and he was good. So I don't get it.
8:40 - Placing Seven @ Seven seems like a trend these days. Personally, I think 7+Ace are one of the best TARDIS teams, and it was nice to see them one more time in POTD.
When 7 had to tear down Ace to get her to stop believing in him by telling her he didn't care for her and how useless she was her devastated reaction tore my heart out. It's one of the only times I really felt like that in Doctor Who (the Rose being stuck in another universe stuff did nothing for me). She was an orphan and The Doctor was all she had. I don't remember the specifics of the episode but remember he had to do it to save her life.
I only saw a couple of those episodes, but I did like them very much. And he and Ace were prefect together. I don't think either one would have been as good with others.
2nd was one of the best with Jamie as his companion. Great chemistry. His first episode I was "meh" about since all he did was play that darn flute and barely said a thing, but the rest of his run was great. Although it was that Doctor that gave us the Sonic Screwdriver, but back then it was just a literal screwdriver rather than a magic wand so I can forgive him for that.
A question that (probably) will never be answered: Would either Hartnell or Troughton be ranked differently if the entirety of their catalogue as The Doctor was available? For those who don't know, the BBC had an utterly annoying policy of taping over any number of their old shows (not just "Doctor Who") as a cost-cutting measure. Many of the shows from the first two Doctors suffered this fate and the only reason we have as many episodes of them as we do is courtesy of video and/or film copies that have shown up in various places around the world.
It's hard to rank something you can't see, and it's a shame. At least there's audio of most of them even if the video no longer exists. The 2nd Doctor and Jamie were a great duo. The only think I curse the 2nd Doctor for is the introduction of the Sonic Screwdriver, although back then it was used specifically AS a screwdriver rather than the magic wand it is now.
I watched William Hartnell as the Doctor he was brilliant. I only hope that the 60th anniversary against the Toymaker is as good as the one I remember. Tom Baker should have come in 4 and Matt Smith at number 1
Lol at "we only placed Jodie this low because her stay was so short" but then put Paul McGann and Christopher Eccleston above her 😬 The truth is she was let down by below-average episodes! 😥
Christopher Eccleston was the first doctor I stuck around to see the whole series through. I saw bits and pieces of older series through pbs and my very first doctor was Baker, but I had no idea what I was watching and just ended up playing with my toys more than I watched the show. My favorite is Tennant, if course. Once he regenerated and became the 11th, my interest waned. There was just something about Smith I didn't like.
I may have grown up with modern who as i was born in 92, but Tom Baker will always be my favourite doctor. Jon Pertwee in a close 2nd place with 3rd going to William Hartnell
Without commenting on the rankings, this video is so poorly researched that they claim to have put 13 so low in part, because she "only had three seasons" and "her time was short"? Um...every modern Doctor, except for 9 and 10-ish did three seasons. Admittedly, hers were slightly shorter seasons. But still, how many eyes did that glaring error get past?
Exactly. Each modern Doctor Who actor after Christopher Eccleston has played the role for three seasons. David Tennant was the Tenth Doctor from Seasons 2 to 4. Matt Smith was the Eleventh Doctor from Seasons 5 to 7, and Peter Capaldi was the Twelfth Doctor from Seasons 8 to 10.
I'm sure there are plenty of people who would consider him overrated, but David Tennant is definitely my Doctor. While I do think RTD DID go a little overboard by having him need to kiss literally every young female companion (to be fair, it still grated on me less than how heavily Moffat tended to sexualize Matt Smith), I always loved his more human take on the role. Imo Ten was the most broken version of the Doctor. He was tormented by guilt and regret, and ultimately just wanted a place to belong. I really resonated with his tragic character arc. All that said, I also LOVE Eccleston and Capaldi's versions of the character, and I haven't watched all the Classics at this point, but of what I've seen so far, I'm a fan of the Patrick Troughton and Sylvester McCoy.
I first saw David Tennant on TV as the 10th doctor, and I grew up with him, but quickly abandonned doctor who, only to come back to it years later and got attached to Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker as doctors. People are *urging* me to watch Peter Capaldi as soon as I can, so I'm pretty excited. I have my soft spot for David Tennant, but Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker are very very high on my list of favourite doctors
I actually quite liked Colin Baker's Doctor. I would've put Paul McGann last and McCoy lower than C Baker. Also don't like how the fugitive Doctor is above C Baker.
1, Patrick Troughton 2, William Hartnell, David Bradley 3, Tom Baker 4,Peter Capaldi 5, John Pertwee 6, David Tennant 7, Christopher Eccleston Colin Baker was underated
I just want to lay this out there. It’s not that Jodie Whittaker was a bad Doctor. It’s not that she was a woman. It’s that she was given shit material. Everyone who made Doctor Who great had pretty much left the show at this point. Give her credit. She had to work with what was handed to her. And she still pulled off a believable Doctor.
When they brought up the first doctor I just realized how much they hosed us on seeing his granddaughter again. We got the granddaughter of leftbridge stuart we could've gotten another version of her or her son. I know the audio dramas have more but I kinda wanted more on screen appearances. Also do a top 20 of companions next.
The wonderful thing about TEN is that he is also exists as the Meta-Crisis-Doctor and as FOURTEEN. You simply never get enough of him. I'm very curious to see how FIFTEEN will fit into the ranking one day, but after the first episodes of his first season, I'm convinced he'll be a fan favourite too.
The only Dr Who I ever watched was the first guy. I used to run home from school so I could watch it (maybe re runs) when I was 8 or 9. Realtors had no idea what was going on but I loved it never realizing the Dr Who character would become so iconic.
I'm Gen X. I grew up on the 4th Doctor on PBS and have always put him at number one. No one else even comes close. Tennant is overrated. And many of the best stories come from Jon Pertwee's era.
The whole Rose storyline was more relevant to me than the doctor's who encountered her. So tragic but so much emotion in Tenant's last encounter at bad wolf bay,, best episode by far
My top 5 favorite Doctors 1. David Tennant 2. Jon Pertwee 3. Tom Baker 4. Peter Capaldi 5. Matt Smith I will admit Paul McCann is my least favorite Doctor on account that I just couldn't connect with the guy. (John Hurt can do any role justice)
Five will forever be my Doctor. He's one I grew up watching until my parents stopped me watching when it got too scary (in their eyes). But Six is kind of my Doc as well as I grew up with him as well as Five. And I will defend him and Colin until my dying day.
Don't understand why the fugitive doctor is on there, she just doesn't make sense to me, no idea why she was brought in, like what was the point? Jodie Whittaker would unfortunately be last for me. Cannot remember a single episode or a title or anything, it was just terrible. Maybe if she had better writing it could've been something. Tennant at 1 is 100% correct, he was the embodiment of the Doctor, just incredible.
Peter Davison is my favourite. He felt the most vulnerable as it felt believable that he could lose while others Doctors at some point you knew would always pull out a victory which made his stories more interesting. His final story also showed him as the most selfless of Doctor's as he gave his life to save one person rather than saving the galaxy like many of the others, loved his speech in the Caves of Androzani when he was bringing down the spaceship as you could hear genuine panic in his voice.
Peter Davsion is my favourite as I love his take on the Doctor and his stories are amongst some of the best ever written especially the Caves of Androzani. The 5th Doctor is also who I grew up watching as a small child so there is some nostalgia there for me too.
Peter Davison is horribly underestimated! He was terribly backlashed for portraying the Doctor in a very different way, especially since he immediately followed Tom Baker- an immensely popular Doctor who played the role for 7 years! It’s no wonder Davison left after only 3 years and it’s only in recent times that his work on the show has been rereviewed and appreciated! While I like Tom Baker, David Tennant and a few others better, I do like Peter Davison’s work.
I'm glad Jodie Whittaker's doctor wasn't at the bottom. She did great job in her performance. It was the writing that killed this iteration of the doctor. Excellent video overall. So when are you going to rank The Masters? 😃
bruh, her entire character is an immature quirky mess that exposition dumps at every opportunity and is exited about literally everything. She has an idea of what the Doctor is, breaking it down on a surface level and just regurgitating it, she did not play the Doctor. She looked the part, but my gawd was that a bad Doctor.
I don't know why some younger people can't or rather won't watch the classic series. They are missing out. I don't get it. I know what quality is and it has zero to do with when something was made. Many of my favorite films and tv shows come from before I was born. Many of my favorite albums are from before I was born. It's about quality and substance.
Although everyone has their favourites, I think every Doctor Who fan owes a lot to Patrick Througton and Christopher Eccleston. Throughton because it showed that the series could change it's leading man without it becoming a gimmick while allowing the show to change and Eccleston because it showed Doctor Who could have a place in the 21st century.
Hear, hear! Eccleston was my first doctor and he was so full of energy, but also incredibly humane and somehow ancient. I remember fearing that I could never continue watching the show after his regeneration... but that only shows how much you know.
Everyone has there own list, I think I agree about the Doctors in the top 5 just would amend the order slightly. For me personally it would be Baker, Tennant, Capaldi, Smith & Ecclestone

Fell in love with Eleven with one phrase: "hello, I'm the doctor. Basically, run"
that's why he's the best
cringe
Tom Baker forever -- with the short, but memorable Paul McCann -- he needed more time imo
Capaldi is my favorite Doctor with David Tennant being almost a tie. I just love both of them so much!
It’s always Tennant and Baker for the number 1 and 2 spot. After that, fans mostly just mix and match their own lists based on taste.
Me who puts Tennant at the bottom *laughs nervously*😅
Tennant is so overrated don't know what the big appeal is.
@@salliewagenblatt5188 I'm curious, who Is your favorite then
@@Renfield97 Don't blame you lol
just saying it to pleese the wrong side of fans you where probably one of the fans who left doctor who just because the doctor that left and the doctor replaced him was matt smith and left and came back in 2023 and probably leave again after the 60th has gone passed :I
I grew up with Jon Pertwee (despite being born in the '90s) and I will always go back his stories.
10:51 Christopher Eccleston
15:59 David Tennant
I see why six was last but it’s a perfect way to show that the doctor gets a new personality upon regeneration not just small little tweaks but the way he thinks changes
My Best to Worst Doctors:
1. David Tennant
2. Tom Baker
3. Jon Pertwee
4. Matt Smith
5. Patrick Troughton
6. Peter Capaldi
7. Sylvester McCoy
8. William Hartnell
9. Christopher Eccleston
10. Peter Davison
11. Paul McGann
12. John Hurt
13. Jo Martin
14. Colin Baker
15. Jodie Whittaker
Honorable Mention: David Bradley
How is Tom Baker not number 1?
Because David Tennant was incredible in the role.
I was wondering that as well
Its fine that the 4th Doctor is on the #2 spot. The 10th Doctor did really great during his tenure.
Because the votes are likely made by younger audiences who idolize Tennant as their first Doctor. Tennant is fine but should probably be a few spots below Baker imo.
Because compared to most modern Doctors he wasn’t great
David Tennant is easily the best doctor, followed by Matt smith. Loved both but Tennant made me feel so many different emotions
Let me guess. You've seen little to no "Classic Who"? Otherwise, you wouldn't say that. Tom Baker is easily the best doctor and it's not even close.
@@JasonGaylor-v6l That's just your opinion. Everyone has different tastes
@@samuelnicholson7905 pretty much a fact though. Id put both pertwee and baker above tennant
i started watching clasic who due to comments like these i have to agree with them
@@JasonGaylor-v6l😂 Tennant is literally the improved version of Tennant I literally watched Classic Who ( Only Bakers ) just to see if they were good.
Christopher Eccleston got me into Doctor Who back in 2005
The Fourth Doctor is far and away the best for me Twelve is #2 followed by Nine at #3. The rest are all portrayed by fantastic actors as well and can be numbered in any order afterwards.
Your just trying to be different and that's all there is to it.
@@louwinters508He's number 4.
I tell people that Troughton is my classic favourite, Eccleston modern, and Colin Baker for Big Finish.
Same
The 4th Doctor Tom Baker was my introduction to Doctor Who and still my favourite Doctor to this day!
The Second Doctor in 8th place?????????????????????????????????????
This list is pure comedy 😂
2nd was one of the best with Jamie as his companion. Great chemistry. His first episode I was "meh" about since all he did was play that darn flute and barely said a thing, but the rest of his run was great. Although it was that Doctor that gave us the Sonic Screwdriver, but back then it was just a literal screwdriver rather than a magic wand so I can forgive him for that.
Agree. I put Troughton over most of the modern Doctors.
Top three are my favorites in the Doctor Who line up! But all of these actors and actress bring something different to time table ❤
@@wallacewallaby5782 Too, the Second Doctor was the first to make bow ties cool, and the first to incorporate the advice: “When all else fails- RUN!”😄
I watched William Hartnell as the Doctor he was brilliant.
I only hope that the 60th anniversary against the Toymaker is as good as the one I remember.
Tom Baker should have come in 4 and Matt Smith at number 1
@@gillianhynes7120 Tom Baker has been ranked as the best Doctor more times than anyone else...and for good reason.
@@JasonGaylor-v6l that's the thing not everyone agrees on the same Doctor
You got it right!
Yeah I found that baffling too... 3 series' is standard at this point
This bugged me too. The classic doctors were also mostly less than 3 years.
Yup. Poor research at best.
David Tennant (Doctor #10/14)is great- but my Number One will always be Tom Baker (Doctor #4)!
Colin Baker's Doctor gets unfairly judged based on his early episodes. The character evolves and gets much better by the end.
@@wallacewallaby5782 so true
1, Patrick Troughton
2, William Hartnell, David Bradley
3, Tom Baker
4,Peter Capaldi

Colin Baker was underated
It’s a real shame big finish isn’t even considered here because Colin baker and Paul McGann are incredible there
Colin Baker #1, McGann #2, Capaldi #3 for me.
I will always love all of them, each of them had a unique spark to them.
I did love Jodie last words as her doctor "blossoming blossoms, doctor whoever I'm about to be, tag your it"
I just want to lay this out there.
10th served as my introduction to Doctor Who so I'm extra excited to see David Tennant back as the 14th.
You got the first place right and although Eccleston is my second favourite, it’s hard to argue against Tom Baker in second.
It was a cool video. For me the top5 would be from bottom to top: 11th, 3rd, 10th, 12th, 4th. 😎

#1. Tom Baker. #2 everyone else. This has been another episode of Tell Me You’re GenX Without Telling Me You’re GenX.
I'm Gen X. I grew up on the 4th Doctor on PBS and have always put him at number one. No one else even comes close. Tennant is overrated. And many of the best stories come from Jon Pertwee's era.
@@JasonGaylor-v6l "overrated" hahahahaha you is joker bro.
The whole Rose storyline was more relevant to me than the doctor's who encountered her. So tragic but so much emotion in Tenant's last encounter at bad wolf bay,, best episode by far
I cant really rank all the doctors, they all make the role their own, can we not just love each one for what they are?
My top 5 favorite Doctors
1. David Tennant
2. Jon Pertwee
3. Tom Baker
4. Peter Capaldi
5. Matt Smith
I will admit Paul McCann is my least favorite Doctor on account that I just couldn't connect with the guy.
(John Hurt can do any role justice)
I won’t argue with Jodie Whitaker’s placement, but giving her “short” tenure as reason is really weird since 3 series/seasons is basically the norm.
Five will forever be my Doctor. He's one I grew up watching until my parents stopped me watching when it got too scary (in their eyes). But Six is kind of my Doc as well as I grew up with him as well as Five. And I will defend him and Colin until my dying day.
Amen!!!
Nine will always be underrated. He BROUGHT the show back.
David Tennant and then Matt Smith for me :)
“ I don’t wanna go” then then the TARDIS starts crashing towards it really hurt seeing tennant go but we needed him back facts💯
I agree. Matt Smith is MY Doctor but Tom Baker is THE Doctor. No one else has been so "Doctor."
I agree with this. He was my favorite. I started watching with Baker, but Davison seemed far more relatable
Peter Davsion is my favourite as I love his take on the Doctor and his stories are amongst some of the best ever written especially the Caves of Androzani. The 5th Doctor is also who I grew up watching as a small child so there is some nostalgia there for me too.
I liked him too
He's mine as well. Forever my Doc.
her performance kinda sucked too
bruh, her entire character is an immature quirky mess that exposition dumps at every opportunity and is exited about literally everything. She has an idea of what the Doctor is, breaking it down on a surface level and just regurgitating it, she did not play the Doctor. She looked the part, but my gawd was that a bad Doctor.
I am really shocked ! Where is my GOAT, Rowan Atkinson ?
McCoy ad-libbed ""Unlimited rice pudding!!!!"Genius.
Can we all just agree that this is an amazing character? Doctor Who? No better character. Doctor Who, is infinite. Just amazing.

Patrick is my favorite, Jamie was the best companion so much so there’s a popular series based on him!
2nd Doc and Jamie were a fantastic on screen. Great chemistry and funny. I believe the actors were friends off-screen as well.
Tom Baker is easily my favorite
David tennant will always be my doctor. He's the one my dad introduced me to. And his stories are the best.
Tom Baker is the definitive Doctor. Youth will always pick Tennant but Baker is legend
I don't know why some younger people can't or rather won't watch the classic series. They are missing out. I don't get it. I know what quality is and it has zero to do with when something was made. For me, Tom Baker IS the only Dr. Who. I feel he should be no. 1, disappointed he isn't. 4th and final answer 😂
My first three would be 3. Baker, 2. Eccleston, 1. Tennant.
The one thing is that Big Finish polished the Sixth Doctor very well.
Tom Baker is the real no.1
Always! Tom Baker IS the Doctor!
Putting Hurt under Whittaker is a crime.
The Best Doctor and Eleventh, by Matt Smith.
Too nice and energetic.
I can't fathom anyone placing 13 over the Sixth doctor.
6 sucks man
Christopher eccleston is the best even his big finishes are good
Christopher Eccleston will forever be my favorite doctor. He is fantastic.
Unfortunately I've only gotten to see the first seven doctors plus the TV movie. My favorite would be a Tom Baker followed by Patrick Troughton
Whittaker’s stay wasn’t that short. Most of the doctors have done it for 3 years
Tom F'n Baker
I really liked Jodie Whittaker as The Doctor, but yeah, the writing and plots during her tenure unfairly weakened her portrayal.
I remember watching 'Dont Blink'... a masterpiece. The 10th and Martha Jones ' arc was special for me...
I agree because I am a qualified lesbian
I don't understand why Martha doesn't get more love. She was amazing and, for my taste, less needy and dramatic than Rose.
