Hahaha lemme say this.... I went for an interview at around 22 years for the promotion jobs and guess who was my interviewer? Just Ivy! This woman is tough! (I'm not complaining) We were a group of like 10 ladies and we all failed!! We went again for a different interview which Ivy was still the boss...I got the job,got to work with her and it was the best experience. Trust me since then she became one of the women I look upto...that's way kitambo even before Over 25...

I am a HR.... and I felt the attack by Julia 😂
About the CV, here is a standard format:
    1. Contact info-name, email, and mobile
    2. Personal profile- market yourself in a paragraph
    3. Skill- both hard and soft
    4. Work experience-( focus on achievement more than a whole hundreds list of responsibilities)
    5. Education
    6. Additional info
    7. Rerences
NB: No one has time to read a lot of stories on over 100 CVs sent for a single post, because unfortunately thats how it is, so many unemployed people, one job receives hundreds of applications. An ATS software is mostly used to track keywords relevant to a job. So customise your Cv based on the job you are applying.
    Thanks

@@emmamwanza2138 on work experience.. Try to indicate what you achieved in your previous position, that is if you are not a fresh graduate. By achievement it would be something like a contribution that led to better performance, an innovation, an improvement, meeting goals, etc. For example, a customer care personel could state "I developed and implemented a customer satisfaction survey tool that helped the company to measure the extent of customer satisafaction." That is a just an example.....
Does walking to offices help, I would say, there is no absolute answer for that question dear. But there is no harm in trying.

I hold the HR office at my firm and I have interviewed quite a number of people. My advice on CVs is send your resume in PDF opposed to word. My take is that it's a lot like a proposal where you don't want the recipient to change aspects of your work and it is simpler to be cautious in PDF than word
In interviews I would say that most people don't respond to sad stories. Don't lean on pity for the hire. Don't cry, don't give your life story, just work with your credentials and have them rep you. So many girls cry in interviews and I think it is not the most charming way to get hired.
Parting shot, never bad mouth your previous employer

I agree. Never bad mouth a previous employer at an interview no matter what. Keep all that and share it after you get the job. The company may perceive you as a potentially divisive influence, who when the going gets tough may fall back to your established habit of blaming you employer first, potentially spreading negativism and harming the morale of your coworkers

    • @ivymarenya6797
      @ivymarenya6797 3 роки тому +1

@@savanaahful Absolutely! Companies spend a lot on staff morale and they don't need a new hire to wreck that.

One thing they don't teach about CVs is that there is no such thing as one size fits all. You have to cater your CV to the job and/company you are applying for.
For some, the emphasis is your education, others it's your experience, etc. You NEED to research the organization and know which one they are more interested in.
And how to sell your experience when you are younger - that attachment, that side hustle, that holiday job you went to, the hawking you do, etc. There are so many soft skills you master there, but you see CVs and someone just doesn't capitalize on the soft skill learnt on those odd jobs.
Experience does not mean white-collar job experience only.

I remember in my early work years I had to quickly learn to manouvre those sexual harassment stories. I basically acted a fool and pretended I didn't get when a guy was hitting on me. I ended up being called naive and clueless and also 'virgin Mary'. But that was my mechanism, nowadays I am very clear to steer conversation towards business so guys just leave you alone.
On the sisterhood front, yo! I get that Bravado thing, I remember once I just asked my Manager what exactly the issue is because I got tired of trying to figure out why I made her so mad. And she didn't have anything of value to say and I pissed her off more for being straight up. To the point I was taken to Hr but when I asked what the exact issue is so that I can rectify, she also couldn't pinpoint it. So basically just be you, don't let anyone intimidate you. Do your job, be a team player with colleagues and maintain high performance. Watanuna, watachoka.

That thing for acting a fool is real! Keep to myself, do your work, get un and get out. You'll be called "too quiet" but it kind of works. It's also been my mechanism. And it's crazy that we even have to do this or think about it. I hope it is better for the next generation especially now that we're having these conversations openly.

The investment industry has come a long way, back then the MMF and other liquid investments had a minimum investment amount of like Kes 1m which later changed to Kes 100k, then Kes 1k then today most do like Kes. 500 bob. This was mainly coz of the limited amount of fund managers in the country so with every new entry we got more flexible requirements coz every new player needed a market share as they joined the industry. Similar to banking and loans, new players in the market meant new ways of doing stuff. Imagine how high end banking was before Equity.

I think this is the most empowering episode from you. It just opened my eyes on things that I have experienced or seen other people go through in the work environment, rn I can look back and think "..omg, that was sexual harassment'' and I had no idea at that point in time. Another frustrating category are the ones who think they can order you around in the workplace and you cant say anything coz of "Respect for Elders", wtf. I remember this one time a colleague of mine who is even younger than me thought that it was okay, and I had to explain to her why it is not okay coz your opinions matter and how other people treat you and make you feel also matters.

Remember you’re also interviewing the company! The other side of the picture is maybe you don’t want to work for people who don’t focus on your results or have a culture that’s very far from your values and beliefs. A good hiring manager knows that the best talents are also interviewing them.

Even for some entry level positions like Management Trainees you go through like 3 stages..starting with an aptitude test, the a second and final interview. So back in Uni we had something we called SLV (Salt leavers something). SALT was a church ministry for youth main ly in college and in Uni and since the church was inside UON it meant 99% of the guys were in UON. Anyhu so the last year we'd have different courses by the alumni who left SALT come prepare us for the job market. We'd do like a 3 month course on CV writing, we'd do dummy interviews (proper coz the alumni were senior managers in their line of work). We'd also do courses and case studies from the alumni entrepreneurs etc. This really helped me out. The one thing i wish i was prepared for is something similar to ponyoka na fresher. We had events in school (1st month) then 3rd years would come intentionally to date or have a one night stand with freshmen. People should know that most work places are similar and prey on the freshest thing in the office.

A CV should contain at least 5-7 roles and responsibilities per role you have held or at least a brief description of the activities you do/have done at the role, remove ID number, gender, marital status, tribe and all these bio data. Your cv and cover letter should be relevant to the job you are applying for and have achievements like Julia said. Save as pdf with your last name then first name.
Before an interview, do market research to help in negotiating the salary. Do research on how to answer questions like strengths, weaknesses, motivation to work at the company and this can be found in the job description of the role.
Be as calm as possible and view the job as a conversation because that is all it is.

I think what we need to learn the following in order to find some job or even freelance:
Public Speaking, Project Management, Negotiation, Conflict Resolution, Software development, Accounting, Financial planning, Critical thinking, How to mentor, Business plan Dev, People management and Customer service. These are some of things that our high school curriculum lacks. If we have such reforms in our curriculum a majority of high school graduates will be finishing high school and they can start working while studying in campus.

Jules you are so right about interviewing in the US and UK is so much more intense (I have interviewed and worked in Kenya, US, and UK). One thing I found is that in Kenya most times pple start working after college or after 18, as opposed to majuu interview practice starts in highschool at 16 (legal working age)

  • @FranEJ
    @FranEJ 3 роки тому

mentorship, that was an interesting one...a great way for you ladies to do it without feelin like it will take too much would be to go speak to groups at girls high schools and just motivate them as to what is out there and what is possible for them to achieve. Especially to the under privilege schools where some do not have access to computers, internet... Just seeing you beautiful ladies come to their schools to speak to them will be something they will never forget. You could go as a group or individually. Great way to give back.

I believe i could offer this world so much more than I currently am. My journey to unemployment has been really sad due to alcohol issues I am a recovering alcoholic 2 years 4 months sober now and I feel that if you gave an opportunity to be on your show I would give your viewers some insight on what not to do especially for the young professionals watching and I might also get a chance to rejoin the workforce. I know you guys have alot to do but you would be helping out one of your viewers and from what I learnt from your show you really try to help where you can. Thank you again .

Finance interviews are extremely technical. You have to study. The first one is usually written ,which is basically text book knowledge and then the second one they will throw in technical questions here and there.
Ivy, We don't know things about money and investments just because we did finance 😭😭😭. I am also on the struggle of figuring out where to keep my money for it to grow ....it's like all this info is a secret 😭😭
