There are some people like me who feel like we have been adulting all our lives. #FirstbornDaughter. Ever since I was young, I always had to put others first before myself. I learnt how to take care of the home, know what is needed, what has run out. Stepping into adulthood has not been as hard for me because I have always had to do a lot of stuff for others and also for myself from a young age. I moved to France about 3 years ago and I did all the processes myself (school application, visa, passport, scholarship) and I would pass on the information to my dad 🤓 but it is not easy because while I am just in my twenties, at times I feel like i have lived 60 years 😵‍💫

Listening to this episode I was struck by how much corruption has affected life in Kenya. I'll explain, first, access to healthcare. NHIF is similar to the government run systems in Europe and the UK, the UK has NHS for example. If you read about these systems online, you will see that they are not perfect, they support millions but even then, sometimes not everyone's needs are met. Healthcare is expensive world over. But in Kenya public hospitals lack even the most basic of supplies in some cases. Why is this the case? Theft of public funds etc that are supposed to cater for these and other needs for the public good. Even in Europe, there are private insurance schemes but usually they supplement the government programs. The same can be extended to education, most people I know are now sending their kids to private schools either because the quality of education in public schools has fallen or they cannot access a good school close to them. It is hard having to pay out of pocket for almost everything, that is why it is important to have a system where you can access some services through the public system. In addition, each of these ladies is working for themselves, so in terms of accounting for certain services, they have to do it on their own. I am not saying it is a bad thing, it is just different. Some of these things are somewhat masked when one is an employee, your employer remits taxes to KRA, they might provide a health insurance cover even though deductions might come from your paycheck etc. So to sum my long comment, I wish Kenyans would realize that some of the difficulties in navigating life as an adult are coming from the dysfunctions in the system, and/or sabotage of systems that were setup to provides services to the public but are left to crumble to benefit individuals out to make money. Coming to this realization might mean people reject corruption and demand more accountability from leaders and really anyone working in an institution designed to serve the public.

Lornzie- your point on the year feeling short is spot on! When you’re busier time flies faster and before you know it, it’s the end of the year. Unlike when we were young and had enough time to get “bored”

This has been a very important conversation and I believe its time that we ask why we always feel not ready for adulting. Truth is, we are barely prepared for what real life looks like. There is a lot of cushioning children from what real life entails and I think its about time that changes. We feel unprepared for adulthood because all through childhood and teenagehood, parents try to create a perfect picture and not share the challenges of life and then one day you wake up and realize life is hard. 😑

That point on health by Julia really resonates with me. Especially if you work in healthcare in Kenya and see how those who do not have money cannot get treatment. Some public hospitals do not even have basic medication. It really is sad since health is a basic human right.

Amazing episode as always. Regarding the expressway, it is under private good not public good. The 72B spent was fully funded by the Chinese, and our governments job was to ensure that the toll was affordable for Kenyans. Other than that the Kenyan Government had no input in much of the operations, as it is not under public good in Economics.

Nowadays it is so hard not to compare since people put most of their highlights on SM and you're huko caught up in between manifesting and moneyfesting when some people just have to ask from home and get it done. On the expressway there are 3 modes of payment. Cash is one of them. You don’t have to register.
No you don’t need to stop at every spot you go express to your exit. You also don’t pay at the entry you pay at the exit. At the entry, you pick a “pass voucher” which you present at the exit.

I think the noticeable differences in lifestyle has been amplified by social media especially because nowadays people are posting their (almost daily) lives and we have access to them so you keep seeing how they’re going for all these holidays whereas before social media you wouldn’t know if so and so went on holiday and if you did you wouldn’t be having access to the type of holiday they went on.. idk if it makes sense
Even down to the house someone lives in ata the car they drive where they shop.. sometimes I miss the sort of oblivious life we had before social media anyway we have to adapt
I think there needs to be a deep study on how social media has had an impact on humans as technology continues evolving
Other than that this was a very interesting and insightful video.. loved every minute of it as I continue to ask myself why I wanted to grow up so bad 😂😂

Adulting hits you start counting on how much your being deducted on NHIF, PENSION, etc. Also when your lazy do anything/cook, and remember breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Also when its weekend and you just want to be in the house sleeping, am 23 lived for 3years alone paying bills. I loved this Chat. Thanks for the AFYA RECORD APP RECOMMENDATIONS.

Lool. Mine was taking myself to the hospital when I’m ill . One day I was feeling so poorly and I started crying for my mum as I was burning up in my house alone. After feeling sorry for myself, I had to pull myself up and take myself to the hospital for treatment because absolutely no one was coming to help me get medications or carry me to the hospital. At that moment I knew I was adulting to the max. 😂.

I agree with Ivy that buying groceries at the supermarket is way cheaper (kwanza Carrefour na their deals). Also way safer because they really check their food as they have a higher probability of being sued as compared to mama mboga.

    Hi! 27
I knew i was an adult When i was finding out which courses my younger siblings wanted to do and started thinking which universities they would go to way before they finished high school....then started looking up scholarships for them and guiding them in applying. Because bruh! When you know the price of bread you look for many ways to save elsewhere. The school fees headache ild see my mum get every new school term was real, something had to be done. Result: both got scholarships to study abroad(thank God). Yes there were many fails and rejections but after a long time of not giving up,guess who can buy 2loaves of bread without a headache now😜

I knew I was an adult like back in campus. I always wanted to be far from home for the "freedom and like space" which was great I concentrated on my studies never too distracted and all. But I hit a low point and everything was so bleak for me. I pulled myself out of the muck through sheer will and even that was running out. My first employment gave me character development and then I was ushered into the workings of the world. Wueh I mean! It's been very interesting. I'm looking forward to making long term plans for myself. I keep reminding myself "My life is my own." So that I have the courage to make necessary risks.

I am 27, my adulting began at around 20. It hit me that I was an adult when I understood why my mom would complain over too much tomatoes in food /I would notice they are no longer 2 for 10 and now 1 for 10. Aiiiii...Like nyanya...still pisses me off.
I related with health insurance, parenting myself, generational wealth thing, plugging parents and shower gel /serviette use. Eiii Adulthood is the ghetto.

I knew I was an adult when I got to thirty and the realisation that I have nothing to my name hit me HARD!!!. I looked at my finances and I wanted to cry. Why hadn't I done better, made investments or taken greater risks in my younger years? It also hit me when I had to get a to do list app to help me properly manage my time and make sure I accomplish as much as I can In the day.
