Why Society Has Failed GenZ

  • In this video, I explore the reasons why Gen Z is struggling with adulthood, relationships, and navigating the challenges of real life. Many young people today are stuck in a fantasy-driven mindset, shaped by media and entertainment that detach them from reality. From distorted views of intimacy to the glorification of victimhood, these cultural forces are undermining their ability to form meaningful connections and embrace responsibility. I believe this issue isn’t just limited to Gen Z-it’s a broader societal problem that affects us all. Our culture promotes consumerism and shallow communication, leaving many young people feeling isolated and lost. But there is hope. I encourage those struggling with these issues to explore the Orthodox Church, where genuine community, real relationships, and spiritual growth can be found. It’s a place where you can reconnect with reality, find a sense of purpose, and immerse yourself in a tradition that fosters true human flourishing. If you're feeling disconnected, I invite you to look beyond the noise of modern culture and rediscover what it means to live a meaningful life. Find your local Orthodox church and experience this for yourself.

Look up to the Patriarch. Look up to masculinity. Believe me. Every generation of males before you ALWAYS did that. They have you guys, for the first time in history, being against the Patriarch. That the Patriarch is wrong. No it's not. It's all meant to weaken you. To make you become less so that women have the power. It's manipulation and coercion to put the Matriarch in power. But its at the expense of you. Trust me. They made you guys become against the prior generations so that you don't learn the wisdom/the spirit, that's there to really become the man you're supposed to be. Try to hang out with Xennials, Gen X, Boomers and even the Silent Generation. Just by being in their presence will change everything. The number one virtue you must be about before doing this is respect. Do not back talk in any way. Don't be judgmental in anyway. You have to learn how to follow before you can lead. And we will strengthen you and lift you. Stay away from these new tv shows, movies ...etc. It's all meant to make males become less. Watch shows or movies from 2015 and before. Don't fall for any of this feminist rhetoric. And never let a girl think she's tougher or superior to you. It's also another tactic that's meant to break you.

There is someone that I wanted to have a relationship with who led me down the path of going into the Church but our relationship ended the very quickly once I started down the path. I am grateful because they were in my life to get me started but the reality is that we could not walk down the path together and looking back now I know that is what God intended for the both of us.

A lot of people join the gym or go extra hard on school specifically from the influence and inspiration that Anime sometimes gives of overcoming your hardships, working and training hard to achieve your goals, etc. I get that you were focusing on the fantasy aspect of things and I'll admit that there's a lot of people who use anime as a way to escape and fantasize and never end up achieving anything meaningful with their lives. But I think there's also a lot of positive that comes from Anime. It was weird seeing you go for anime like that when I'd honestly say that the recent super hero fad that plagued the movie industry did a lot more to remove people away from reality than anime did. I myself lost 200 lb working out by myself at home from the inspiration of Anime. Thank you Goku!

It's not only a problem for Gen-Z but for all of us because if people stopped living in truth, then we're living in some madmen's collective nightmare. Anyone not following the 'programme' (pretty much anyone living in truth) becomes an exile in every sense of the word, both good and bad. Good because we're not of this world. Hence, we're outsiders and exiles. Bad because, at the end of the day, we're just human, and we get lonely and seek the validation and approval of our contemporaries for emotional comfort.

    • @edm-london1660
      @edm-london1660 16 годин тому

Hi. But there are two worlds. One good, the other bad. The bad world is worldliness (greed / narcissism / lust / pride etc). The good world is the Heaven that God wants us to bring to this Earth - now. When we pray, the Lord's Prayer and we pray: 'Thy Kingdom come' this isn't just the Heaven of the future (please God) but the Heaven now that God wants us to bring to Earth - to ourselves, our spouse, others in general, the Church, the world (the culture / civilisation / our country). Also, ALL of us contain both the good and bad world in us, from one degree to another. And so we need to be careful of seeing ourselves as the good guys who are victims in an 'exiled' word.
This is OUR world. Or rather we need to claim it for Christ (including preparing it for his arrival when he will one day return - whenever that happens, only God knows - but we need to be prepared everyday and joyfully too not just out of duty or fear). What's more ALL people have the good world in them, from one degree to another. So we need to be careful how we see the world. And that we're more powerful than you might think (the devil tries to make himself out to be more powerful than he really is). And if we really dig into God in ourselves, then we can become really powerful (but in a humble sense, please God). Like the 12 disciples. Who although lost their lives (we all have to die and God would have given them grace to die well - and it didn't last a life time but typically a few days of trial etc) were like HOLY FIRE transforming the world all around them to establish the Church here on Earth.

    • @edm-london1660

      @@asiaokruszek Exactly!
We're born of the Earth (and spirit). Just as Christ was born of Earth (and also God). The moon and the stars and the hummingbird and gold and jasmine - this was all created by God. Adam was put in charge of all this. A steward of this world. We are meant to be stewards of this world, too. We're meant to enjoy the things of this world but in the right moral context. Not just that but one day God will glorify Earth and unite it to Heaven. And He wants us to enjoy this Heaven and glorified Earth with God and the blessed forever (please God).
But Gnostics fall into the trap of thinking this Earth and our bodies and so on are evil. This is a trick of the devil. The devil, ironically, is from a purely spiritual world only (although he rejected this). And he fears and is jealous of and hates our Earth. And so he tries to make us 'worldly' which means to fall into sin / to be proud / to be lustful etc. But this is quite different from loving and enjoying and being grateful to God for this Earth - this earthly world.
Lastly, The Sacraments have no meaning in a purely spiritual sense (The Father and The Holy Spirit are purely spiritual but they are able to interact with and have dominion over the material world). They also need the material world - not just the spiritual - to make sense for us.

Read “The Anxious Generation” by Jonathan Haidt.
Haidt posits that the “great rewiring” of childhood occurred from 2010 to 2015. In the book, Haidt offers statistics from multiple first world countries that all see a shocking rise in depression, mental health issues, and suicide rates- the big jump occurring in the aforementioned period.
The softening of childhood play began with over-parenting in the 80s, and increased to the near total erasure of a play-based childhood by the 2010s. Children learn to regulate their emotions when playing with others, it is critical to properly socialize a child by the age of 4. We cannot placate our children by handing them iPads to shut them up and get them to stop crying.

The isolation is beyond suffocating and I grow tired of it. It's almost impossible to find people to become friends with, even in the Church. Nobody seems to know how to handle disagreements and nobody has any manners at this point.
There's so much loneliness and isolation in my life. I've been single for 3 years, all of my family is dead except for my parents, and I was never close to my father. I'm growing apart from my mother as I age and struggle to gain independence. I have a godbrother I know loves and cares for me, and that's about it. Most friendships feel conditional or like they can't go very far. I would try talking to women more often but school simply has gridlocked me to where that would be a distraction.

Lemme just say, one of the big reasons anime has become so popular is because unlike most Western media, gender roles are still going strong in Japan, and a lot of girls in anime act very feminine. Even if they have super-powers and they're the strongest person in the room with enough power to beat up every guy and girl around them, they'll wear dresses, act all cute, and expect guys to have manners around them like real men should. And they'll often be juxtaposed against competent men, who work hard and improve themselves to make life better for their communities. It's the complete opposite of a lot of media right now that's full of "strong" women, and spineless men. I work in construction, and there are guys who put up anime girl stickers everywhere, just like ppl 50 years ago would put up pics of girls from certain magazines.
There are anime with exceptions, like trap characters, but this is a big thing with the guys I know who really love anime.

Well said. I tend to like to use the 'Allegory of the Long Spoons' as well to describe the lack of love for God and humanity in our culture.
Here are my thoughts of some major problems:
    1. The death of community. Man has no basis to co-exist with his fellow man in spirit, or in faith, or in shared history. We have lost the "common" upon which men could say they are vassals of. Be it faith, folk, or fatherland. All has become a question of the self vs. the world. All has become economic zones, where loyalty to the self matters more than loyalty to God and humanity's organic commons.
    "Love your neighbor as yourself."
    2. Individualism, the gain of the self normalized over the gain of Godliness in the collective of compatriots. Evil decisions with power are rewarded in a fully profit-driven society rather than punished. Evil people with much power can take advantage of this. This leads to usury, envy, greed, and pride. The market is blind to sin, in fact, it thrives in making profit off of sin, as we see in many markets. The young grow up in this system, and believe that 'greatness' is grander than 'goodness' in a decadant Nietzschean attitude.
"You shall either worship God or mammon."
    3. Utilitarian reductionism of 'human value' to atomized ecomomic units, found in all sectors of society; political, governmental, academic, and architectural city planning. This is very prevelant in marxism and capitalism, where subjects are either idolizing the secular state, or idolzing the private monopolized market. In terms of aesthetic effects look no further than 'brutalism' as a spiritual manifestation of such unbridled materialism.
"Man shall not live on bread alone"

I deeply appreciated this video and each point you made. I was born in 2003, towards the latter part of Gen Z. I was a child of divorce and I have developed addictions to various pursuits of fantasy over the years. The feeling of isolation found in groups of the younger generations is palpable in society, you can clearly see it when you're at school, when you're online, when you're with your peers etc. We all are searching for meaning, and what a lot of us have not yet realized or have put into action, is that true meaning isn't found in video games, anime, social media, *any* form of pleasure or consumption that this world can offer. Its found in Christ, in family, in community, and in living the life that God has chosen for us to live.
Its relieving yet sad to see the former confusion in a new light. How could I and so many other young men and women have been sold such a egregious lie? That's what the enemy does. I've always believed that I was meant to do great things, that I am worthy of love, worthy of a meaningful life. Those things are true, as true for me as anyone else reading this, but without God we have no way of attainment of anything everlasting or that is meaningful, there is no way on our own.
I am very new in trusting God, in walking with Him, and trying my best to grow and to love the Lord and my neighbor with all of my heart. I still live a worldly life, I'm not praying as much as I need to be, I struggle with so so many difficulties. I know that every breath I take is out of grace, love, and forgiveness. Despite all the difficulties and changes, I will never give up on Jesus. I ask anyone reading this comment to please pray for me, that every day I get up I truly surrender to God and His divine will.
    God bless you Father Moses

Other things that Father Moses talked about I think probably played an effect. God had to take me through a rough journey to realize how insignificant I am and how vain I am and crush my pride. Thank You Orthodoxy for teaching humility and simplicity.

Thank you for allowing me to clarify, Father Moses was speaking in terms of relationships but it seems that many have been conditioned to treat everything in a transactional manner to include our relationships. My thought is that people keep falling into the trap of chasing something that they will never get and thinking that there is always something more and better out there for them to get while oftentimes having something very good presented to them that would meet all their needs and wants but they think that's not good enough and that they would just be settling if they simply came to accept what God might be trying to give them. This indecisiveness is paralyzing and mentally ruinous.

I absolutely agree. In life, we are given our faith and what we do with it. How can we have faith when we need everything to conform to all our limits? An example is that divorce is high partially because selfishness is higher than ever. People think happiness is greater than wisdom or long-suffering. We idolize happiness and avoid strength through tribulations. That is a huge issue that prevents spiritual growth. It keeps us weak. Love is often sacrificial, and so is faith. Nowadays sacrificial attitudes are lacking for the greater good of Godliness. People want things to conform to the self, even at the expense of the greater good, such as the holy family. Without sacrifice and long-suffering love is impossible.

It suck’s that Gen Z are raised with iPhones in their hands but I do think it’s making them more likely to realize the pitfalls earlier.

Personally, I would advise against the Catholic church because I believe that a lot of their teachings are extra-biblical and at times go against the word of God.
That's not to say that the Catholic church hasn't done some good in the world, but doctrinally, there is a lot to be desired. I would suggest reading the Catechism of the Catholic Church (but honestly it is so long, I would suggest the audiobook version) because it thoroughly details what Catholics must believe to be considered Catholic. I would also suggest that you learn about the Council of Trent and go to a local Catholic church to meet with a priest for any questions that are better answered in person.
As long as you find a Bible-believing church that treats its congregation with love, respect and is welling to tell the truth even when it hurts, I think you'll be fine.

    • @FireflowerDancer
      @FireflowerDancer 16 годин тому +1

I'm considering doing the same thing! I can't be evangical anymore. Catholics do hail Mary's and believe in purgatory which is troubling, but the Catholic faith seems historically to have this philosophical and relational aspect to it that seems lacking in evangelicalism. Evangelicals believe in deliberately offending others to spread truth. They pride themselves on being free of emotionalism, yet in reality embrace anti-intellectualism and they prefer to live in doctrine rather than pursue actual trancendental spiritual experience. So for me it really comes down to, which is more important, claims made theoretically on paper, or a lived reality that the rest of the world can see and interact with? I am following several Catholics on UA-cam whose intellect and social grace is new and different (Jimmy Akin, Capturing Christianity, Pints with Aquinas) and I'm really enjoying getting to know them. Corruption happens everywhere, so I am not against Catholicism just because of problems with the papacy contradicting certain biblical teachings.

    • @TranslatedAssumption
      @TranslatedAssumption 15 годин тому +3

I was baptized into Orthodoxy this year after having spent 13 years in Catholicism, I tried to go down the road into the priesthood and ended up and what they consider to be a monastic community. Catholicism is not the Catholic Church just because the word Catholic is in the word Catholicism. Catholicism was invented in the 9th century by Charlemagne, it is not the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church founded by Jesus Christ. I think anyone that goes there will end up being severely disappointed and likely in time see it only as a bridge into Orthodoxy. Everything you think Catholicism is Orthodoxy actually is in reality.

Example, One dollar in 1980 is now worth $3.82. Thats extreme, so $50,000 today is worth $13,082 dollars in 1980, its not impossible to succeed, its always been difficult but now success is becoming out of reach.

My advice? If it feels like that, stay away. I went for years even though it didn't really feel right. I was always pressured by evangelicals to 'pick a church and go every week. And it doesn't matter if no one there likes or supports you, just do it for God.' Worst advice ever! If you are giving yourself to something out of the belief that 'one day it will finally give you what you need,' you will end up with trauma and you won't trust anyone. You'll feel lonely and self-invalidating. You'll think it's your own fault when really, it's a corrupt system. Talk to believers and pray daily, but don't join a church organization out of a sense of duty or obligation.

Father Moses is spot on, as always. I'm 24, moved abroad a month ago to start grad school. The loneliness back home was real, but now it's even more so, even within the Church. The fear of intimacy in my generation definitely huge, but since I started bringing myself to communicate in person as much as possible, I noticed it gets even harder to find others who are willing to take that leap together. Maybe this is why it's just easier to talk to older people sometimes?

Yes exactly, hookup! But not relationship. The modern society since the sexual revolution of the 1960s and modern feminism tells women that they should seek sexual liberty
and promiscuity, because it's cool and gives them the feeling of "equality and liberty". But deep down they know, that they want to form a deep long lasting relationship with one man. And this discrepancy between their desires and social pressure makes them miserable. Guys are more happy to embrace the hook-up culture because they have nothing to lose, but it makes them miserable as well.

Honestly as someone who just turned 30. I grew up as the male role model to 3 broken families. I put so much pressure on myself. I was talking with my pastor about it and he said “sounds like you were trying to play Jesus.” And it’s true I was. But we all fall short of His glory and I would beat myself up endlessly and stress myself out like crazy.
Also since I spent a lot of time around 3 single mothers (my mom aunt and grandma), they talked shit about their exes. It genuinely made me have thoughts growing up like “why would I want to work hard and provide for a woman just gonna wind up speaking of me like that.”
I straight up hated women, men & everyone. But Jesus saved me. I used to fantasize about getting 3 random women pregnant & then go get myself killed in some fight to the death. I didn’t want to win. I wanted to die. And i thought it would give me comfort to know my bloodline was assured before I went.
I also have tremendous physical health problems after crush injuries to my feet and nerve damage to my arm. So I basically revolve my life around physio and symptom management. I hate it I won’t lie. But Jesus helps.
Honestly the fact that suicide is a sin has kept me from killing myself on many many occasions. Praise God.
Doing my best to sort my life out now. But frankly women stress me out and idk how to turn that off in my brain that a woman is a teammate not a liability(provided you pick a good one). Obviously part of it is have a job. Which I don’t. All I do is rehabilitate my injuries. I’m also scared that a woman wouldn’t want me. I’m very handsome but I do have real health problems. I often have to spend many hours each evening elevating my legs above my heart and/or lying down and doing gentle stretching and massaging in bed.
I genuinely when I’m like this wouldn’t even want to have sex. I’d probably tell her not to touch me, that I’m in pain and need to do my stretches etc.
It’s hard to imagine a woman wanting to stick around through that.
My health has improved A LOT. But still significant problems that leave me very insecure.
I know at some point I need to be brave and give a sweet young lady a chance. And take the risk.

    Let's be real...
The internet and it's consequences have been a disaster for the human race. I'm not saying I myself use the internet as sparingly or responsibly as I optimally could, but I see too many people plugged into their devices 24/7/365.
It's sad that many days, I enjoy the beautiful park all to myself. It's tragic that during family gatherings even my own father here on earth is usually bowing before his smartphone. And it's disheartening when I try to have a personal conversation with someone while making eye contact, oftentimes these people look away or are too busy in distraction or vanity or vice or whatever to engage with me peson to person. My advice to young men is to find some time to unplug, and ideally within nature & prayer. And even if it's just for 30 minutes a day, that's a great great beginning to a new life
I enjoyed this topic fr. Moses 👍

Their entertainments directed what was expected of them. Why are we surprised that young people reflect the fantasy stories they were raised on?*

Becoming orthodox Christian nowadays for ppl my age is like having to quit and resist all addictions, everything is so frantically addictive, it's even worse for gen alpha who are iPad babies. Junk food, internet, videogames, p*rn, s*x, vanity, weed, etc. You're seen as a weirdo/loser if you don't participate in these things. I always had bad feelings about certain things that everyone said was "normal", so I tried to fit in and do what everyone else did... Turned out I was right all along. But I hate how I sullied myself just because it was considered normal.

No one failed no one, Jesus is the real creator of every person on Earth. There is no such thing as "failed". Different times, different problems.

Confession has been the therapy that I have always wanted but never got in the world. Years of trauma is healing , but not overnight. Slowly but surely. Parenting is like swiss cheese. I made my peace with my parents that they did the best they could, but we aren't perfect and they left holes in the parenting . Thru God's Mercy and Grace, He filled in those holes with father and mother figures to make up where my parents didn't teach me . Also the fact you meet people that have the same personality as people you knew before you joined the Orthodox Church, but fell away via life circumstances. And yet, their personalities seem to manifest in a new person who is co-laboring in Christ and struggling after salvation . So in a way its reminiscent and nostalgic of that person, and yet its novel because it's that person being authored in a new person. Glory to God for all things.

Father Moses your words continue to remind, inspire and keep people accountable, God bless you on behalf of the Greek Cypriot community. I was wondering if you could make a guide or explanation as to how to reconnect with the Orthodox Church for those young people like myself who though baptised the orthodoxy, have been extremely lax / have not until now practiced and had an interest in the faith. One of my personal anxieties for example is about when it is best to go to Church to speak to a priest privately about these matters, as to not interrupt a service or some other event in the church.

Why wouldnt they be this way, Millennials too? We were raised on TV and computer screens, often in homes that have lukewarm or even atheistic parents. Spiritual knowledge is virtually non-existent in an environment like that, this was the inevitable result of the downward spiral the West has been on for a thousand years.

How does one start to get involved with their church if they are orthodox and have been baptized but have not actively been a participant? Thank you for the video as well. The internet has fragmented parts of reality and has made things like pornography hyper real when it itself is not reflective of reality at all.

Unfortunately i think this issue is going to get worse. At least most of us gen z were introduced to the internet a little later in life, now kids are exposed as infants. I guess it's my generation thats going to have to lead the charge and find a solution to this extreme conditioning

Hi, Father Moses. I really appreciate your content and I feel inspired by it. I wanted to ask you if you had read the book the subtle Art of not giving a fuck by Mark Manson. It touches on topics like the fantasy and entitlement that you talk about in this video. Don't let the title discourage you. It is what I would consider a modern book on Stoicism that touches on a couple Christian ethical values; it also criticises the hook up culture and this constant-want-for-more that young people suffer from in our consumer society. I hope you like it. Greetings from Argentina.

Father Moses, can you please talk about not being confident amongst your peers? I struggle with this a lot due to severe childhood bullying and being short. Love your videos and I’m always eager to see your uploads (wish it was 2/3 times a week 😂)

Charity volunteer work. Serve the poor. It seems counterintuitive, but that is one of the best ways to grow. Plus, those who you may meet in such work are of higher humility and spiritual qualities. People in complete secular zones of debauchery like colleges and clubs will likely not teach you anything of spirituality. Service teaches us much..

I hope this is a joke. If it isn't then I recommend reading the teachings of Christ through the Orthodox study bible. A follower of the true faith always has something to offer.
