In this video, I share the approach I've developed over my 11 years as an Orthodox priest to help men struggling with lust addiction. Lust, for many, isn't just about sexual desire-it's often a way to cope with emotional stress and escape from life's challenges. I explain how this addiction traps men in a cycle of shame and self-defeat. Through my two-fold approach, I guide you with practical steps like the importance of accountability, daily prayer, and fasting to resist temptation and regain control. I believe this battle is ongoing, but with intensity, discipline, and reliance on God, it can be fought every day. This is about more than just avoiding temptation-it's about reclaiming your sense of self-worth and fighting against the emotional pull of lust. I hope my insights and strategies will help you find strength and healing on this journey. Keywords: lust addiction, pornography recovery, masturbation, spiritual warfare, emotional regulation, accountability, Orthodox priest, prayer, fasting.

Unfortunately, I was addicted from about the age 12 all the way to 27, which was when it clicked that the world described in the Bible is the world we live in and it is true. I had an overwhelming feeling of the biblical reality and feom there God took my desire from me. I was able to get married and have a child, while finally having control after rededicating my life to Jesus.

@GodHelpHumanity Seeking God in prayer, fasting, and a lifestyle change to honor Him is so important. Be around others who can sharpen you in the Word and biblical character, that can also be ones you can grow in accountability with. Not that they are the source of accountability. Read 1 John, read psalm 119, James, and other books about what the heart of a believer is like. Have transformation in your heart be by God.
Be plugged in a church, don't isolate, stay prayed up, and red up. Do NOT go to places or do actions that give or enable future temptations.
Understand why you sin, and why you lose the thought and spirit battle of lust/fear/lack of contentment/whichever is your Achilles heel...
Know Jesus loves you, and you will STRIVE to love Him back with everything you have. That's when losing anything in this life isn't worth comparing to the ioy of Christ. That's when you're treasure becomes Jesus, and everything else you'll let go of....with Him being the ONE thing that you cannot bear to lose or forget. Realize then that He alone provides the heart change, and He alone sustains that heart - a heart like Christ. Being a man after God's own heart. Actions to watch and do sinfully things can be changed by many ways. But changing a heart - from the source - from a state of loving sin comes only by God. Seek the later.
      Seek God.

One thing I've learned is that this desire sometimes feels like an "itch" you need scratch but in reality the more you scratch that itch the stronger it gets, instead of going away. It seems counterintuitive but the only way to let that desire go away is to not entertain it. Stop putting logs on the fire and the fire will eventually die out.

@@THEJustinOfAllTime Much appreciated, but with all due respect, it's not the Catholic Church, nor the Orthodox Church, that is the "one true church." Did the thief on the cross next to Jesus go to a Catholic or Orthodox church? No, yet he was saved. These developed later. Early Christians were practicing in their homes and in hiding.
The head of the church is Christ, not Rome. Just like Jesus came for both Jew and Gentile, not just one. We all originate from the "catholic" church, not the "Catholic Church." Protestantism originates from that line as well, it simply split with the Catholic Church due to abuses of the Church, the core beliefs are still the same.
Just like the schism between Catholic and Orthodox, both whom claim to be the "one true church." Protestants generally don't do that. It is Christ who saves. NOT the Pope, nor the Church institution from Rome.

I'm autistic and so I deal with a real bad problem of negative feelings. Sometimes it's because I look directly into a light or a noise hits me differently. But a lot of it has to do with my problems with socializing. On top of that all my senses and emotions often feel like they're turned up to 11.
Needless to say, I need God's grace and asking help from Saint Anna (the Godman's Holy Grandmother), The Theotokos, Saint Ephraim of Arizona, Saint Joseph the Hesychast, Saint George and Saint Seraphim of Sarov have really helped me make inches of progress since becoming Orthodox.
My two cents (If I can even offer anything haha) is that we should let this addiction humble us. That's the point of it otherwise God would easily get rid of this issue.

The beauty of being autistic is that it can make one much more sensitive to incoming stimuli: touch, sounds, visions, thoughts, feelings, etc. But that's also its challenge: how to manage and respond to these intensified stimuli. This can make your battle much harder, but it also gives you opportunity for greater holiness. May God richly bless you in your efforts!

Thank you for this. Lust, porn addiction and masturbation has been my number one struggle since childhood. Made my first confession in more than twenty years on Nov 4th. I made it a little more than 30 days before I backslid. But I let my prayer life slip and I know that that I let myself be vulnerable. I make Confession and Mass regularly now. And I now treat it like alcoholics do, one day at a time. Not worried about total time anymore. Just make it through one day. And the next day will take care of itself.

For those upset about the $60 life coaching you need to understand something. He is setting aside the little spare time he has to help people on the internet but you need to be serious. Another priest I know does the same thing for a 8 week course but when he started it for free, the majority of people signing up weren't serious and didn't show up. It takes up the priest's time and takes away an open slot for someone who really wants help. By him charging a fee he found practically everyone shows up now for every session because as he put "they have skin in the game, so they feel more compelled to show up."

    • @leathergrasshopper

It interests me why this bothers people. I figure 1) it either helps or it doesn't 2) if you try it, you probably are already aware that you need to make some changes, so why be mad if someone else's help doesn't work for you? I mean, you already admit that you're having issues, so if it doesn't work, try something else and don't be bitter. 3) if it works for you, great! You got something that was worth the price. I see no difference in life coaching and any other service people pay for- if you don't want it, don't take advantage of it. Sometimes a little of something helps out, sometimes not. Pretty simple. And again, if you try it and it doesn't work, guess what? There's a million other things that might work, so why waste any more time on one that you know you tried and didn't like? We have very little time as it is.

What does the 8 week course cover?

    • @florida5236
      @florida5236 Місяць тому

@jackjack4412 It's Achieving Sexual Integrity, Brotherhood of St. Paisios with Fr. Johannes Jacobse. I don't recall everything because it's been a year and a half and the course has probably become better fleshed out since then. We had homework every week which was to follow the daily scripture readings on the Orthodox calendar, make sure we pray daily, go to Church, don't recall what else. When the meetings occur on Thursday we reported in if we did all of that and how many times did we fall into lustful self-abuse. We see how everyone is doing (around 16 of us I think). We also had questions every week about various things such as our relationship with our dad and how he has/has not impacted our lives. We then would listen to Fr. Johannes talk about how to grow as men and move on from past pain and how it ties into p*rn and lustful self-abuse. Also about our relationship with God and how everything connects. Everyone talks and opens up, absolutely nothing is recorded. Listening to everyone's personal stories really showed how men of all ages (had 20s - late 60s in my group) had similar struggles due to similar past pain or dysfunctional families. You also get assigned a partner to talk with throughout the week outside of meetings. It was a very interesting experience and learned a lot. Really showed me how all ages can struggle if they didn't have a masculine caring virtuous dad growing up. How we need to forgive people and move on. We even had men who were tempted to go down the trans route but turned back. There is no shame amongst the men there towards other men, I remember the results every week. Men were falling into p*rn 4-5 a week for a few weeks. Near the end the majority had improved, it's a struggle but that's how carrying our cross is.

I found that staying busy keeps your mind away from this stuff stay out all day being productive and then come home tired. No energy to engage in that stuff. Pray and then sleep and repeat

Thank you, brother. I was free from this for several months. I'm trying to get myself back together. Before writing this, I was being spiritually attacked by Tik Tok. The feeling is overwhelming, words can't describe. I went into the bathroom at work and rebuked it through prayer. Thankfully, with the blood of the covenant through Jesus Christ, I am protected!

    Thank you, Father.
Recently, God's guidance has been very impactful in my life, more than usual, and I've been sober, but I know the battle is not over and I am not free from this sin yet, so your advice is very valuable and something to remember moving forward. God bless you.

This is gold. Women fight with this too. Love this priest and his real practical advice. Some of the comments are awesome too.

Awesome video Moses. I find what works best is fasting for self control and fitness for emotional regulation

Thank you for encouraging anger as a positive expression, Father Moses.
I feel like I've suppressed that emotion too far, and that's weakened me. It's good to hear another take on it, and how it can be used to heal. This gives me clarity in what I've been missing.
Likewise, an encouragement for perfection is needed to hear. Too many Christians do away with perfection, in almost a defeatist attitude, and I think this lets down their guard, and gives them an excuse to repeatedly fall into sin. Intensity! I needed to hear this. Thanks you.

I wish more older spiritual fathers in the Orthodox Church were able to provide this type of explanation or guidance. The younger generation I feel understand how serious this addiction can become, older men not so much. This will destroy your family and your soul, like Fr. Moses said...it's kill or be killed. Stay strong my Orthodox brothers and sisters!!

Just to add to this from my personal experience:
I got dragged through the mud until I realized my helplessness: "without Me, ye can do nothing".
If you think you can wrestle and beat this you are already trapped.
The only way is up, look up for salvation not to yourself.
The moment you feel like you are doing something, a fall is imminent.
I got dragged through the mud because I thought I could do something.

This is one of the most realistic and actually straight foward (and transparent) man to man talk about this evil addiction.
    It hits home so closely!
Wish this video was around sooner
