  • Care partners frequently ask about what they can do when the person with dementia is no longer interested or engaged in activities and will no longer attend social gatherings. Sometimes this disinterested behaviour is mistaken as depression, but it's actually a very common symptom of dementia called "apathy".
This video offers some important perspectives and possible strategies you can follow to address the challenges of apathy that you'll face as a caregiver/ care partner.
Have you faced this dilemma? What were the challenges and what did you find helpful?

They’re suffering if people are constantly to push them. I have MCI, and I have this problem. I’m at a stage that my symptoms can be mitigated, but when people bombard me with texts and calls or try to force me to do things, especially to go out and especially when it’s last minute, it causes extreme anxiety attacks and that causes me to isolate more. I try very hard to maintain myself so people don’t actually see my illness, which makes it harder. People also try to guilt and shame me. I’m saying this to try to raise awareness and to say that it’s actually cruel and insensitive to bully someone for an illness that we can’t help having.
