“Nadia and her Mama” – Finding Meaning: The Dementia Caregiver Story Project
Stories are powerful tools that influence public opinion and help us process meaning in our own experiences. The dominant story about dementia caregiving focuses on burden and loss. While true, research has also revealed that those caring for someone living with dementia who find meaning in their caregiving report decreased burden and enhanced well-being.
In response to this reality, Deiren Masterson, Aynsley Moorhouse and Dr. Joel Sadavoy partnered, with the support of The Cyril & Dorothy, Joel & Jill Reitman Centre for Alzheimer’s Support and Training at Sinai Health and Relative Strangers Interactive, to create the Finding Meaning: Dementia Caregiver Stories Project, a short video project. These are caregivers’ stories told through their voice, presenting the often-hidden picture where meaning, connection and growth in the journey of caring for a person living with dementia, are possible.
We are deeply honoured to present “Nadia and her Mama”, a 6-minute video of the powerful caregiving journey that Nadia lived with her mother. The video is a significant demonstration of the depth and power of the complex emotions encountered in the caregiving journey, with an affecting and poignant message of both struggle and hope. We present this video with our deepest gratitude to Nadia, for her generosity in sharing these powerful, beautiful and meaningful stories of her caregiving journey with her dear “Mama” and for her supportive desire to share these with others.

It's not unusual for family and friends to distance themselves after a dementia diagnosis. I feel abandoned since my husband's diagnosis. I shared out of necessity with our immediate family and closest friends, even though he didn't want me to. He has alienated people by his constant calling and repetitive questions to financial institutions and to doctor's offices. They need to know what's going on but I feel that I would be going behind his back and that would make him angry or embarrassed. He has messed up finances, changed passwords and then forgotten them and repetitively mixed up doctor appointments. The bank, doc offices and friends are getting quite annoyed with him. He's clueless about how bad things are. I need to start playing hardball here. Just not sure how to present this to his doctors and bank institutions. Oddly, the minimal amount of time he spends with his PCP and urologist, they're completely unaware of his dementia. Which I find disconcerting.

They’re suffering if people are constantly to push them. I have MCI, and I have this problem. I’m at a stage that my symptoms can be mitigated, but when people bombard me with texts and calls or try to force me to do things, especially to go out and especially when it’s last minute, it causes extreme anxiety attacks and that causes me to isolate more. I try very hard to maintain myself so people don’t actually see my illness, which makes it harder. People also try to guilt and shame me. I’m saying this to try to raise awareness and to say that it’s actually cruel and insensitive to bully someone for an illness that we can’t help having.

I really needed to hear this, thank-you. I care for my husband and had to make the difficult decision to place him in a care facility. He wants to drive again, go on road trips, work, the list is endless. He is difficult to distract and his focus on what he can't do or can't have would be admirable in many other ways but this becomes a battle line he refuses to retreat from. It is exhausting as he is so repetitive in his demands.

Give up the battle. Quietly do things that will keep him safe: 'lose keys', agree with going to work, but today they are closed, be smart in the white lies, as he cannot confirm information, and look, but don't show the 'humour' in these requests. Your sanity is important at this stage.

Nadia, thank you for sharing your touching heart-centred journey with your dear Mama (I can relate) and for seizing all the precious moments you could and did with her. What beautiful memories. Thank you too to the team at the Reitman Centre for your awesome commitment to supporting Care Partners. All I can say is "you really walk the talk". I wish my mom's home did... Thank you for being there.
