The "mother" actually looks like an off white very large(golf ball size) Amoeba is the best way I can describe it. That being said that white sediment in the bottom of the ACV if it has not been pasteurized will contain active bacteria If that bacteria is living you can put a teaspoon of it into a gallon of pure undiluted apple juice( no it does not have to be fermented) and leave it in a cool DARK place for about six weeks and it will become vinegar. If you are extremely lucky it will develop a mother. If it does just decant the vinegar and leave the mother. Then add fresh apple juice to the mother to keep it going. You can split a mother in two to share with someone. My grandmother and several of my aunts kept mothers. I saw them do this hundreds of times.

The best change, is to change. All the minor details of everything is just that….minor. Twinkies will kill you. Not receiving an enzyme in your Apple Cider Vinegar won’t. The point is, you made a positive change overall. Don’t sweat the details.
Dr Berg, I work in the wine industry and just wanted to drop a note. We do not pasteurize our wine here. None of the wineries around us do. We also try to minimize the use of sulphur and tartaric acid, with some wineries here refusing to use any additions of anything at all to their wine.
I make my OWN apple cider vinegar from our local apple orchard. From raw unpasteurized cider. I even press apples and make vinegar as well... all organic, no chemicals. Cheers!

I switched to Fairchild’s after watching a video where you mentioned it! I noticed that the color and potency had changed in the Braggs and decided to give the Fairchild’s a try. I love it and thank you so much for all your help!❤️
Yup, I just went to the grocery store today and picked up a bottle of Braggs, and I was like, why is it so light in color. I mean, it's very light to be an apple cider. I put it back.
Thank you for the informative video, Dr Eric. Since taking apple cider vinegar in March 2023, I've been under the delusion that the sediment was the mother and would give the bottle a good shake until it vanished from the bottom LOL! Thanks for the heads up about Fairchild's. I get my raw and unfiltered vinegar (5%) from Costco in the UK, but I will check out who stocks Fairchild's.
@@richardjohnston4682 Personally, i use Bragg with Honey. The stories about that brand changing the recipe is false. You just need to do the research on the other side, instead of having a confirmation bias based on what you heard on social media. You could always make your own vinegar. I recommend Glen & Friends Cooking channel on youtube, for making apple cider vinegar, pineapple vinegar, and beer vinegar.
I only use Bragg's ACV to rinse my hair. It actually helped a severe scalp problem that I was having. So, at least it works for that lol Thanks for letting us know.

I discovered Fairchild about a year ago and it's made locally and fresh. I prefer the taste. But for us locals, there's only one store that you can get it. Wish it was as widely distributed as Bragg? I take a calculator in a glass of water twice daily. It's essential part of my high fat low carb diet. 18:6. This has cured my diabetes, fatty liver and high triglycerides. I sleep better, have almost zero body aches, receding gums stopped and gained almost twenty percent strength on my weight lifting routine. "I'm not on steroids. I'm OFF carbohydrates!" 54 yo, and on the upswing?
So I recently get my very first Bragg vinegar and I find out it isn't as good as I would have liked. Well, you saved me from potential future purchases.
At first I also drank Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar, but I switched to making my own apple cider vinegar from fresh apples a long time ago. And my opinion is that the apple cider vinegar I make is by far much tastier, despite the fact that the process is of course not standardized, i.e. each batch turns out to be different. In fact, the taste even depends on how long it sits in the bottle after bottling before I drink it. Still, they're all much tastier than Bragg!
I’ve made fruit vinegar before but not apple cider vinegar. Do you get that gluttonous (sp?) blob at the bottom of your jar when you make your apple cider vinegar? I wonder what Dr. Berg would say about that. Everyone else is saying it’s the mother. That’ll be interesting to hear his ideas.
@@terryhall2299 Yes, that is the mother. Usually it forms at the top. Sometimes, it sinks to the bottom, but not too often. When it becomes too big, I put it in the blender with the ACV and use it all together.
@@inesmeneses8570 You really don't need any special science or preparation to make homemade apple cider vinegar! Simply buy a few pounds of apples, preferably good sweet ones, although sour apples can also be made. Get a large enough pot with a lid. Wash the apples, then chop them all into the pot. You can also cut in the apple cores. You don't have to peel the apples beforehand, the peel can go in as well. If you also cut the peel, it will taste more tart, so it will give your vinegar a more individual taste, and it will also contain more vitamins. However, in this case, the chemicals with which the apples were sprayed, waxed, polished, etc. can also get into your vinegar. Then mix some water with a little sugar. No matter what kind of sugar. Honey is not really a good substitute for sugar. Three or four tablespoons of sugar is enough for a good-sized pot. In the last case, it also works if you don't add any sugar at all, only then the process is much slower. And the more sugar you add, the stronger your vinegar will be. Pour the sugary juice over the apples, then add more water to cover the apple pieces. Since apples are lighter than water, some apple pieces will stick out on top, but don't worry. For the first two or three days, stir it a little once or twice a day so that the water touches everything. But after that, don't poke anymore. Cover the pots, but not completely airtight, because then it will not be vinegar but wine... You have to wait about 3 weeks. Do not use hot water to prepare it! If you have previously prepared homemade apple cider vinegar, you can pour a tablespoon of it on the new portion being preparated at the beginning as an inoculating agent, it speeds up the process. If a stretchy gray or whitish snot-like mass appears on top, don't be alarmed, that's GOOD, because that stretchy thing is a colony of vinegar-making microscopic fungi! And this slime is also edible and full of vitamins! This is the real "Mother"! And it's only slimy at first while it's still thin and young. If you leave it for a long time, it will become thick and like rubber. However, if you see yellowish, greenish or reddish mold on top, remove those pieces immediately. After four weeks, strain it, put it in bottles and use it. It is likely that the slimy "Mother" will form again on top of the liquid after bottling, because it matures longer, but don't worry about that, the vinegar will be even tastier!
I've been doing 1-2 Tbsp daily of Bragg apple cider vinegar in an effort to follow through on being more healthy (watching your videos that taught me about ACV). I'm not apposed to switching brands at all, but confirm that Bragg is still good even if it isn't the best. I'd hate to think I wasted all this time and effort...

Don’t be foolish like me: always dilute ACV before drinking. I drank a spoonful of undiluted Fairchild’s ACV a few months ago, and had a minor chemical burn in my throat for 2 weeks that was quite painful.
@hifumibestgirl - I had the same awful experience! I felt as if I had a sore throat. You should NEVER consume undiluted vinegar. Great advice! Thanks for sharing!
I've never done acv but I've been following you for quite awhile. In 2016 a CT scan showed I had nafld and it was extremely inflamed. I followed your advice and in May 2023 while going through alot of exams and tests because i was getting mitral valve repair, I had another ct scan. It showed no nafld, my liver is normal size. However it showed a lump on my lower left lung that they said doesn't look concerning and they won't check again for a year. Hopefully by then that will be gone.
Dr. Berg, thank you for confirming my suspicion. Earlier, this year, I went to buy Braggs ACV but it was all out so I bought the Fairchild brand. It looked & tasted more potent. In comparison, Braggs seemed like a watered down version.
Thank you Dr. Berg your info regarding broccoli sprouts is helping m autistic son, myself and my dementia patient. You are truly a good person. I çan't thank you enough.
You can't see individual bacterium but you can see biofilms, large colonies of bacteria. If you make your own apple cider vinegar you will see the resulting biofilm form on the surface of the vinegar. You mix this into your vinegar and you have "mother" mixed in plus still seeing the biofilm clumps. You can also see the cloudiness of the liquid as it loads up with yeast and then bacteria.
So glad you informed us about this. I have noticed that there is a difference in a lot of what used to be quality products. Disappointed to hear this about Bragg vinegar too now and I just bought a brand new bottle. I will be switching to Fairchilds if I can find it.
This is very interesting! I've been buying Bragg's but this past summer for the first time I made my own ACV and this disc formed at the bottom, just like in Kombucha making. Found out from Mary's Nest yt channel that this disc is the actual mother (which is never in the bottled stuff).
Actually, on the bottom of my Bragg vinegar was a disc. It was slimy and disgusting. I had to pull it out so I didn’t drink it from the bottom of my glass.

Fairchild’s is delicious. I used to be a Bragg’s customer because it was easy to get in the grocery store. But one day I came across Dr. Berg’s video and ordered the Fairchild brand. I could definitely see Bragg’s waters down their ACV next to Fairchild. Fairchild’s brand tastes delicious with a stronger apple taste. Good stuff!
I've been using Braggs for the past year to recover from gut issues. What those issues are exactly, I don't know, but I suspect candida overgrowth in the aftermath of a month on cipro and some chlorine dioxide I took. Had some major gut issues after the CD food sensitivity and digestive issues for a year. Been doing better, Braggs has helped as has Irish sea moss and a bunch of candida cleanse herbs and I feel great improvement. Not sure if the Braggs helped, I feel it did, but not sure. Probably the most helpful thing I've done was cut the sugar out of my diet
As far as acetic acid is the most important ingredient in fighting against insulin resistance I will continue to use other vinegars at 6°-7°. Unfortunately ACV isn't available in our country, and neither it is in most regions of the world...
I’m always curious why people online are so evasive about “their region of the world” lol, I’m over here telling someone that asked where they could find Fairchild ACV “in the Dallas TX area it is available at Target, Walmart, etc. Etc. 😁
I like the extra fiber in the Bragg ACV. They do offer less potent formulas, but I still do well with the original. Good to know there are other options.
I a bunch of fermentation and you're right in that what you see at the bottom of the jar isn't necessarily the mother, but I can attest that if you grow yeast and bacteria, it will develop into what's called a "scoby". Kefir grains are a scoby, and the stuff that grows in ACV is also a scoby. So you can't see the individual bacteria or enzymes in ACV but if there's enough growth you can see the resulting scoby, and it would be the mother. Some scoby will float, some will hang in the middle of the bottle, some will settle to the bottom, but the way you can tell if its sediment and leftover parts of the apples, it'll be more or less like granules or wet sand or the like.... and if its the actual MOTHER, it'll be stringing together forming periodic blooms and shelves and fins and the like... But ACV like anything else, with enough growth, will absolutely have visible bacteria/yeast colonies.
The one objection to Dr. Berg’s explanation is that bacteria cannot be seen. Sure, an individual bacterium cannot be seen, however, if a bacterial culture is incubated/grown it’s presence becomes very obvious in a clouding of the medium in which it is growing.
I stopped buying Bragg's last year. I buy from a local farmer here in Ireland. It's £3.99 around $4.50 just a little more expensive but it's local and 100% organic.

Thank you so much for this information. I was confused when I bought my last batch of ACV supposedly Braggs ......I had noticed that it didn't appear to look like my last batch. Then found out that the company had now changed hands and changed it. I was mortified and angry. However, I'm so pleased that I may be able to get something similar to the original ACV, fingers crossed.
That’s why I started making my own AV, this fall and it turned out perfect, with the mother on top. 😉 The best acidity is between 3 and 3.5… and it’s very easy to make, frankly.

I make my own ACV and I just started a batch of Pear Cider Vinegar. That way I know what’s in it, truly organic and made with filtered water.
"ACV", so that's what your calling it now. In my day we just called it moonshine
@@Herbie11 Nah. If a person tries to make hard cider and it goes bad, it's vinegar. If they try to make vinegar and it goes bad, it's alcohol. Weird how that works.
So many times I've heard people refer incorrectly to the unfiltered sediment as the "mother" . Glad you put this out to educate folks.
I tried it and i dont feel it does much changes to my body and health but on days when i ate too much gassy and oily food drinking a cup of lukewarm dilute apple cider vinegar does help to made the body feel better and normalised again quicker. It also work well for freshening the breathe too.
@Anglo-Saxonco How do you dilute it? 50-50?
One spoonful of apple cider vinegar to a mug of lukewarm water.
Don't use metal spoon and cup and don't use boiling water.
Ostlers in Devon do a good one at a decent price.
If you leave the cap off your vinegar, the mother will form.
@@reflux043 Which type of vinegar do you recommend? Thanks
My ACV is also at 5% and says its a product from Spain.
I only use Bragg's ACV to rinse my hair. It actually helped a severe scalp problem that I was having. So, at least it works for that lol Thanks for letting us know.
At least it still works which means it has its good minerals. I hope it's still as healthy and effective today.😢

Lucy's organic ACV is also another one to look for. Family owned, BPA free, unpasteurized, unfiltered with the actual mother.
It is bottled in plastic which is the main reason I wouldn't buy it. If they change to glass and/or make smaller sizes in glass, I might.

I make mine from the cores and the bruised peels. Super easy and essentially free.
Can you give the recipe, for the apples
Wow. We are all so misinformed!!!! I wasn't sure what the mother was!! Thank you for educating us!
That seems to happen alot on the internet.
I just made my first jar of sauerkraut delicious, by the way. Now, I'm going to try to make my own ACV.

@DrEricBergDC Thank you, Dear Dr. Berg.
You should do video on Coconut Cider Vinegar. To see if the drink is as good as drinking Apple Cider Vinegar.
Probably quite a good choice.
Thats what he says at mjnute 1:20..or not?
