Strangely similar to the three heads of Lord Bhrahma, a god in Hindu Mythology. Very interesting, and well done. I'm not sure if this is on your to-do list of "Strange Christian Art", but while visiting Jerusalem years ago, my wife and I found a church in the Armenian Quarter where they had a painting (icon) of Mary with baby Jesus, yet Jesus had an adult head. The lady at the church giving us a tour said that "many miracles, such as curing cancer" had occurred there, via the icon (according to the lady, this was a very special and rare painting). I just did a search on "baby jesus with adult head" and it appears that it was somewhat common for a while.

Best video yet. I dreamt of a Janus figure the night this was released (though I'm seeing it the day after) so it truly appears to have, "Burst upon the scene". Many thanks.
So many Hindu deities have multi-headed versions illustrated in this way, it didn't seem odd to me at all. Before the explanation, I thought it could have been an Indian depiction of Jesus. It would be interesting if, in future 'industry standard', one of the Trinity becomes illustrated as female. Perhaps 'God the Mother'?
In Filipino folk Christianity, God is in fact divided into 5 (tying with some esoteric links with the petals of the Sampaguita/Arabian Jasmine): God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit, and a seemingly higher-level dyad called the Infinite God and Goddess. They called it the Five Vowels/Voices (Cinco Vocales) and are common visual motifs in metal amulets.
God the mother to the extent to represent like the highest female form is basically taken over by Mary. God the mother as part of the God head is a bit iffy and mostly heretical. Jesus can be given more feminine aspects in his role as the eternal logos and to the textent that God's wisdom in proverbs is described in feminine terms and to some extent as well a similar thing can be done with the holy spirit. But those would the formulations that would probably be heretical outside of a non-mystical context cuz Jesus is to be depicted more in the form he incarnated on Earth in (the male son) and the holy spirit similarly in scripture is only described in very non-human and non-gendered terms. So without any scripture or early church basis and the fear that it would be shifting church doctrine just to satisfy people, it will be deemed heretical or close to heretical and dropped.
Christian art is adapted from Greek allegorical art and is not supposed to represent the entirety of the ineffable God of scripture. The Trinity represents the way we can relate to God in the New Testament. Jesus is the Son, he told us to pray to our Father in heaven, and there are accounts of the Holy Spirit as the presence of God among us, seen as a descending dove or as the wind or flames of Pentecost. These ideas of how we can relate to God were picked up by artists who knew they were making allegorical images which only showed an aspect or point of view on the subject. Edit- there is no such thing as an industry standard iconography, Christian denominations have debated what, if any, kind of images were to be used from the very beginning until today.
Love your videos! I also have a question. Do you happen to know the earliest mentions of any God or Gods in human history? I've been on an information dig on this lately, but it's been surprisingly hard to find a conclusive answer to this question. Wikipedia has articles about early burial rituals but doesn't mention a first depiction of a God specifically. It kinda goes from animal carvings on hunting altars and hunting temples to depictions of human fertility statues to "oh yeah Egyptian Gods were around by this time for centuries" I did manage to find out the first mention of the Jewish god yahweh aka YHWH but there were so many Gods before that time, like the Egyptians and God knows what else
I know this wasn’t directed at the viewers but i believe it is prehistoric times were you would find the earliest depiction of worship I might be wrong though.
@@Hecateofcrossroads That'd be cool, I can't really find a lot about it tho (ofcourse theres no explaining scriptures from that era, complicating thigs xD)
It’s ironic to me how Pope Whomever banned the depiction due to how pagan it looks given how Catholicism is a pretty firm mix of the two religions. Not just in the holiday traditions that were integrated over the centuries but the bare bones aspects of our practice. The depiction makes perfect sense to me in both a logical and spiritual way. I’m genuinely upset it’s not used in churches. It could also help kids understand how the hell the trinity works much easier.
One of the ways to imagine the Holy Trinity which I find fascinating is saying that God is one person at three different points in time and space. Kinda as if he was a "four-dimensional" being. Hard to say what, when and where he is exactly, but, let's say, the Father is the Divine Creator in the skies, the Son is Jesus on earth and the Holy Spirit is the light inside of each and every human soul. They are different, yet they are all God. Please let me know if someone came up with something similar already and how it's called
it's kinda sad that somewhat the three headed Jesus art was banned because of Dante Inferno which is probably just a "canonized" Christianity fanfic. And somewhat the fact the three headed thing that implying to be one of God's "appearance" somewhat presenting the three religions that God himself just created which is Judaism, Christianity and Islamic
Your videos are really great. When the video was ending, it didn't seem that video was as long as it was. I really hope you do more strange Christian art videos.
It is not such a complicated concept. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are three essences that make up God, but individually they do not make up the whole of God. If I must make a comparison, imagine those mecha robots that work individually but together they make up a single being (?) I love the video! Paintings and the art of before its such an amazing topic ❤️
It was probably made complicated through the vast infusion of Greek philosophy And as one of my wise professors once said: "The Greeks are always trying to make our lives more complicated!"
We also have singular bodies which are made of many easily differentiable elements which are still part of one entity. It would be crazy to say that your right and left hands are the same object just because they are both part of the same being.
It’s actually not that simple. For example, what you just said, saying they are three essences, would be considered heretical tritheism. God is three persons of one essence.
@@GillfigGarstang I know but you are talking about individual parts, the hands, the legs, etc. I spoke of 'essences' that can work individually but together form a single being, God. That's why I gave the example of the mechs haha
@@ModernEphemera Yes, they are three persons within the unity of God. All three share the same attributes and the same nature; therefore, these three constitute the one God. But I spoke of 'essences' because they are the set of permanent and invariable characteristics that determine a being or a thing and without which it would not be what it is. And in the Trinity each 'person' represents something, which makes up the essence of God.
I remember hearing a story about an old lady who died and got rejected from heaven because she had a house full of holy trinkets and pictures and crosses and she praised the objects as if God was only associated with these pictures and objects. She thought that was her ticket to heaven.... It wasn't. I believe Im shown what God really is and what I can really do while I'm asleep, my dreams are more like visions, I remember them all and the fight for survival that's going on in my mind. Nothing is as it seems.
I still find it ironic how Dante inferno interpretation of hell as 9 layers (though considered a fanfic) aligns with Aztec/Mayan culture idea of hell being in layers as well 🧐
How is it disturbing or weird? Makes a lot of sense actually since he's basically God. Not in the sense of the trinity though, as the bible doesn't support the idea of the trinity, but as the godhead.

Having played Elden Ring recently, the two headed masks from Raya Lucaria seem to have taken inspiration from this. Great video.
I was wondering where the idea of depicting a three-faced devil came from, now I know! (And the three faces of his are red, black, and yellow, they represent hatred, ignorance and impotence I think.)
Sounds like that could’ve been used as a justification for racism
@@shizuwolf it probably was…

I love it when people talk about and analyze early christian art. I feel like it opens a great discussion not just art-wise but in terms of religion, the human condition, and our own existentialism. If this is gonna be a new series, I'm all in and all ears
The Celts believed that your soul was in your head so the gods are depicted with multiple heads and in war someone’s head was a war prize because of this reason
Bro that was AMAZING!!! I’m so pumped I can’t wait for more iterations of Strange Christian Art, I expect it will be some of your most watched videos!
Ive been wondering about three headed Jesus for years, figured I knew the reason but it was astonishingly elucidating to learn the rest of them!
This series on strange Christian art is something I would look forward to in the coming days! Thanks for this!
I'm currently doing a module called Magic and Science in Mediaeval Writings, and your content covering animals made my reading for the class on bestiaries much more enjoyable! This week we're studying lapidaries - it would be wonderful to hear your take on the perception of stones as animate 😃

I wonder if this is what inspired Michael Kirkbrides "Many headed Talos" for the Elder Scrolls.
@@MoonyInspired my university's English dept is running it as part of the MA 🤓 I'm really enjoying it 😁
@@whyamilikethis1998 That sounds very fascinating, indeed! Last year, I had the privilege of taking a class on magic and medicine in antiquity. While tremendously inspirational, it proved both formative and integral to my endeavors as both a writer and an anthropologist. There's a lot of semiotic intrigue to consider across cultures through time and space.
What is the difference between ‘Medieval’ and ‘Mediaeval’?
Strangely similar to the three heads of Lord Bhrahma, a god in Hindu Mythology. Lord Brahma has 4 heads though, out of which, three represent the 3 states of consciousness - waking, dreaming and deep sleep of all living beings. The fourth head represents the Super conscious state, which is the Brahman. Since, He is the creator of everything, He has multiple heads.

CHRIST is also similar to name KRISNA ( the supreme god) of Hindu . The holy Trinity is a Copy of TRIDEV , Vishnu the father supreme god( CHRIST) , bhrama who came from Vishnu ( hence son ) and SHIVA who is the formless supreme god ( the holy spirit)
I was surprised to find out that you’re a secular person seeing as you make all of these beautiful presentations on the rather niche aspects of the histories of world religions, as a catholic I think you have done a wonderful job of portraying the subjects in your videos

I can't believe this is the first time I've ever seen a three-headed Jesus painting. And there's a bunch of them. Mind. Blown.
I think of the trinity this way : Water. Water can be liquid, solid, or gas. All three are water, but solid is not liquid is not gas is not solid.

Well I thought biblically accurate paintings of angels were disturbing but this is a whole new level of strangeness.

Yes, this is going to be a series, excited to see more of this type of content.
I first saw one of these depictions just a few years ago and found it absolutely fascinating. Thank you for covering this interesting topic.
Also orthodox icons often represented sacred subjects with a warped perspective: it was said that they were "not painted by the hand of the man", and the icon was considered a manifestation of God, a holy object (summing it up a lot).
I was raised Catholic but had not known this was a thing. Thank you as always for the novel topics and exceptional presentation!
Same thing with me!
You’re still Catholic right?
at what point did you decide to abandon the faith? You think... uh... the universe just farted itself into existence on accident?
@@Mindmartyr not so much abandon it. I'm still a creationist at the heart of things I think, but I disagree at how churches of many faiths and systems seem to want to abuse what authority they give themselves. Ultimately the universe and existence themselves are mysteries and we're still trying to figure out the How of it all; whether it be energy borne of an infinitely dense singularity congealing into physical matter that by chance and infinite attempts goes from inorganic to organic or that same primordial energy being shaped by an aware deity, I have no strong opinions on.
@@Lyander25 I think when you look at the universal constants & the behavior of matter & it’s symbiotic relationship with the laws of physics & all the factors that are codependent on one another to exist it becomes pretty clear that it has to be by design. The universe is like the most complicated computer program of all time. It’s like looking at a video game & saying “we don’t really know how this came into existence yet, it’s a mystery” That’s REALLY ignorant in my opinion. & as far as the church abusing it’s authority although that has happened throughout history It’s completely blown out of proportion by pop culture in the modern era & even if it is happening on a large scale Jesus warned against it so you can’t use the sinful acts of men masquerading themselves as church authorities to denote the words of Christ. “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's. clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.”
I just had explained this 3 headed figure to one of juniors in college.. I can't thank you enough... This channel is golden..

I really like your approach to this topic. Your descriptions of those artworks doesn't seem particularly judgemental or demeaning, but is descriptive and dives into the mindset of the artist.
The storytelling of the video is truly top-notch.
Awesome video! A cool video idea could be about “Abrahamic God” and the relationship in Islam, Judaism, and Christianity.
this is what I'm interests the most
To give a true and accurate account of that would require going into some very taboo subjects. Sadly the truth that Jesus tried to make known is all but forgotten and not to mention illegal in these godless times.
this would be a very difficult topic
such as what differentiates the Islamic God to the Judaic God?
Can the Christian God be considered the same as those of the Islamic and Judaic God? etc.
@@user-rg2hk9uz9u There's two proofs that Islam, Judaism and Christianity was created by the same Abrahamic God:
*Archangel Gabriel was a well know believed Angel by Islam. And God also created Gabriel.
*Jesus himself was a Jewish before he become his own religion
@@stalloneandrew9961 i don't deny that our religions come from the same source

Depicting the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit together seems more theologically accurate and also more sensible than depicting three Fathers together or one Son with three faces. The latter two versions are like hilarious parodies.

I've seen similar images from art in Tool albums. They'll depict beings with one head and three faces in a psychedelic realm. If I'm remembering correctly the art was inspired by a band member trying DMT
The Tool album covers also contain a lot of trypophobic eyes covering the body, which is also very angelic in the Christian sense.
The art was an Alex Grey painting called Net of Being. It was not made by the members of Tool. Alex Grey also provided the artwork for Lateralus
I witnessed a 3 headed entity from a DMT plant. It told me," I was there since the beginning".
@@marl3ymarl3y86 Not Christian, a reference from prophets, Old Testament. The Christian texts were in Greek, Angel was the word for messenger.

Fascinating! Easily my favourite UA-camr currently! Thank you
Very interesting, and well done.

Oh, I'm definitely interested in seeing more. Thank you so much for making wonderful and interesting content
God is portrayed as male because how we imagine him to look like is based on the pagan skyfather archetype like Zeus.
@@jaymandal5256 So you say the depiction has no basis on Scripture, got it
Christian art is adapted from Greek allegorical art and is not supposed to represent the entirety of the ineffable God of scripture.
Your videos are so fascinating and your voice matches them so well! I can't get enough. ♥️♥️

It kinda goes from animal carvings on hunting altars and hunting temples to depictions of human fertility statues to "oh yeah Egyptian Gods were around by this time for centuries"
I did manage to find out the first mention of the Jewish god yahweh aka YHWH but there were so many Gods before that time, like the Egyptians and God knows what else
I know this wasn’t directed at the viewers but i believe it is prehistoric times were you would find the earliest depiction of worship I might be wrong though.

Another great video! There's so much great and strange Christian art...and I love it!
Easter is the celebration of ashtar the goddess of fertility that why catholic worship mary
Ouf... im really looking forward to this series! Great Video again, Thx.
I have never seen this three-headed jesus, thanks for the vid
Why is this unlisted?
Don’t know
So excited for this new video! Love this channel
It is not such a complicated concept. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are three essences that make up God, but individually they do not make up the whole of God. If I must make a comparison, imagine those mecha robots that work individually but together they make up a single being (?)
I love the video! Paintings and the art of before its such an amazing topic ❤️
It was probably made complicated through the vast infusion of Greek philosophy
And as one of my wise professors once said:
"The Greeks are always trying to make our lives more complicated!"
Love your videos! One of my favorite channels
This channel deserves way more subscribers ngl
