@beatmeoffbrazy than explain crusaders, witch trials, Spanish inquisitions, and nazis blaming the jews. alot of people did stupid shit because they couldn't mind there own business and had to cast blame on somebody else minding there own business. They also cared so much about pagans following there own religion that they burned down there churches and built there own on the pagan's holy sites and made holidays to convert them easier to christian while also killing the heathens. @@ZenBigCat Just ask yourself, 1: what does any artist learn to draw well first... people. 2: What does an audience need to connect with the most in a piece of art... people. On the topic of Bingen and Bosch's vision, I think people often forget it is the *brain* that creates psychedelic experiences and not the substances. While people typically need chemicals to disrupt their brain into making them, people have been having "soul revealing" (etymological meaning of psychedelic) visions for all of human history. These tend to be less fractal/complex, but it's worth noting we don't need mushrooms to experience altered states of consciousness

For my explanation, in my own perspective, many artist interprets several times about "the Tree", Bosch's Tree in The Garden of Earthly Delights is a dragon's blood with some grapes and leaves that look like bread(symbolizes the blood and body of Christ), and medieval culture is some what weird, based on Faith than Reason, like some of Stange Christian Arts, mostly they took something from the ancient and converted into their Christian Culture(eg. Three Headed Jesus and Hellmouths) and some are misinterpreted about animals like elephants carrying a castle, I could respect the Medievals though and their minds are now tried to evolved to Renaissance...For Hildegard von Bingen, I read in the books and art about God's Visions in Four Seasons before this video is release, according to the book she's a abbess and mystic.

great video, as an art history student I appreciate your methodical and respectful approach to this topic that is absolutely worth talking about even though some scholars would scoff and call it nonsense. medieval art is super interesting and the iconography is fascinating. I love bestiaries but my personal favourites are the strange little creatures that crawl in the margins of illuminated books. I can see why someone who had never seen an elephant but had heard rumours about it would draw it like that, but nothing can explain why so many knights are fighting giant snails (and losing). for those interested in the very history of psychedelics in ancient religion, look to the east and much earlier in our history, in a region that would later be called Persia. it is pretty much accepted that people in this region consumed ayahuasca, an extremely potent psychedelic, and that it was in some way related to spirituality. the cult of the sun god Marduk left interesting petroglyphs where the god is represented as a humanoid with a head made of concentric circles, rays, or some shape that looks an awful lot like the ayahuasca plant. I’m not saying that’s what it is, but it is a theory that serious experts in the field consider at least possible. in any case, this art is may be from where originates the tradition of putting a nimbus to signal divinity or sainthood. this part of the world is also where the proto-indo-european mythology would take the form of Zoroastrianism which is understood as somewhat of an indirect ancestor to the abrahamic faiths. in this way, christian art just might have some links to psychedelics after all, but not so directly.
Funny you mentioned symptoms of shroom ingestion and then talk about St. Hildegard. She was afflicted by bouts of illness a lot, with episodes of these visions coming to her during several of these.
Yup not to mention the common occurrence of fungi like ergot often growing on wheat and barley which would find its way into bread and man other baked goods that medieval people relied on for food, and some of these fungi had psychedelic properties as well....when one thinks of it this way, that possibly our medieval ancestors were just ingesting fungi all the time, many of the weird myths, legends, visions and religious beliefs that were around back then made sense. For all we know Dragons probably came about because some medieval peasant ate some bread that was made from wheat infected by ergot and started tripping out
I don't precisely disagree with your statement that those aren't trees, but... when you have something that very much looks like a mushroom and and you have to change it's color from red to green to argue it's a tree, I think you're beginning to strain credulity. If you did it in reverse, and took a tree in medieval art... that looked very much like a tree and then changed the foliage from green to red to show it's a mushroom, I think you'd find yourself stretching the argument a couple steps past broken. A. muscaria is found around the Mediterranean which is the western side of the holy land.
Animals in medieval paintings mostly looked like that because the painter hadn’t seen the actual animal; they were only described it by someone else. There’s a lot of messed up elephants for this reason.
You're correct. The Alhambra in Spain - the Lion sculptures are comical. It would be more apt / believable if the description was that these represent Jaguars 😏
Great video as always. If anybody is interested in going down the rabit hole of pschedelics in religion, I suggest reading 'The Immortality Key: The secret history of the religion with no name' by Brian Muraresku. All books on the subject do reach slightly, but this one is extremely well researched, and focus' on Ancient Greece and how their 'secret recipe' might have influenced the newer religions.
There's a lot of strange things in the Bible and Bible-like literature. My favorite being apparent mentions of Alexander the Great in the Quran. Perhaps you should cover the existence of historical figures in Abrahamic text
Just wow. Thanks for the amazing video / mind opener. The ai art seems amazing, leave it to amazing people to bring out the best of the AI. :) I wouldn't rule out mushrooms at all. Where there are trees/forests, there are often mushrooms. When the devil/fire comes there can be some different mushrooms. Great art always aspires to reach a huge audience. Having multiple meanings is more often intentional than not. So basically one take is, religion was propaganda to teach us that paradise is your current state of mind, and eating the forbidden fruit does grant you temporary knowledge, but then makes you go out of paradise, and you cannot come back. Millenia old "don't do drugs kids, it's bad for ya".

Thanks for explaining why psychedelic imagery in art can be problematic when discussing whether these religions used these substances. I always thought this was a good point and was interested to hear you explain how it doesn't have as much merit as people think. On the other hand though, I think that it is ignorant to believe people did not use these compounds, especially in religious settings. Psilocybin mushrooms grow all over the world, along with hundreds of other mind altering substances which occur naturally. If I was an ancient and encountered one of those extremely powerful substances, I do not for a second doubt that many would have interpreted these experiences as divine. Drug Taboo is quite recent in history, and for most of time people used many substances without a negative connotation; it makes sense that people would have used them.
you might look into archeological evidence of ancient biblical era vases and the use of pshycodelic properties of communal wine commonly ingested during Hebrew religious practices
great video. i must point out though, amanita muscaria is not a psychedelic mushroom. its a deleriant and highly toxic if consumed raw. historically they were used for ceremonial purposes and probably deliver a somewhat psychedelic experience but psylocibe cubensis are the more commonly referred to mushroom in history as they grow worldwide and are 100% psychedelic

@Marcell Uche interesting.. I live in canada tho do they ship there
Funny you mentioned symptoms of shroom ingestion and then talk about St. Hildegard. She was afflicted by bouts of illness a lot, with episodes of these visions coming to her during several of these.
Literal fever dreams.
Could you make videos on Celtic or Norse paganism? Maybe Anglo-Saxon or Brythonic too? I LOVED your Baltic one
Thank you for the historical information it makes me realize how weird religions are.
The videos are so good that I'm rewatching them again 🥲
I kid you not when I say that I check your channel daily. Another amazing video!
Love your "Strange Christian Art" videos.
Really interesting as always.. it gives me a lot of stories to tell too!. I really love this channel.
Thank you, wonderful content as always! On the image at 7:16 it seems like Hildegard might have been aboard a Federation starship.
Great book definitely recommend
It was apparent you had quite a bit of fun with this one, Hochelaga; and we sure are glad.
"Saint Fungus".
I don't know why but it took me a minute to stop laughing at that one.
I genuinely think this guy's on the same level (If not higher) of entertainment and quality as Vsauce
I wouldn't rule out mushrooms at all.
Millenia old "don't do drugs kids, it's bad for ya".
the editing is so damn good.
I kinda thought that the medieval artist themselves took psychedelics due to how strange the illustrations were.
i rlly loved the part where my guy made some ai art, had fun, and then proved his point in a very cool and beautiful way,, that rlly scratched a specific part of my brain and thank god for it since its like midnight here
Your videos are wonderfully enlightening🥰...please don't ever stop🙏🏽❤👌🏾
Love your videos always so interesting and great pictures keep up the work🙏🏻

Only an Italian plumber with a mustache would take mushrooms on the toilet. When a muggle like Mario noclips into one of those enchanted fireplaces, the Wizarding World can rest assured knowing that he will only consider the Ministry of Magic to have been a hallucination.
Made my day that you uploaded!!!
I recall, some years past, when I had a pair of Mormons come by. They read to me the opening chapters of the Mormon version of the bible, and afterwards asked me what i thought. I told them I thought the main character had eaten some funny mushrooms. They graciously left and I haven't had any visitors since.
Okay?
Have you discussed the knight snails? Please discuss the knight snails!
Giant 🐌 wrecking knights. Killer 🐇hanging 🦊. Maidens gathering 🐓from tree
Considering why biblical angels look the way they are, psychedelics probably played a huge role in their manifestation.
When the "Burning Bush" is so good you start seeing a stairway to heaven
ive seen those angels off shrooms lmfao they’re fucking huge
@@manuelredgrave8348 Many species of acacia bushes that contain DMT can be found near Mount Horeb ;)
No, these are false teachings made to misled people, bible says to keep a sober mind.
"Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."
@@dawn8086 the Bible also makes mention of the Eucharist....a Greek festival in which early Greek Christians participated in which there is historical and archeological evidence that they indeed used psychedelics.....also psychedelic states don't need drugs to happen, you can induce a psychedelic state all on your own through meditation or deep worship as well, I am a Christian and have definitely experienced a psychedelic state during a deep worship session in church.
funny how the leaf patterns in some of the circular trees look like little mushrooms too
like the 2nd one at 4:25 and the top middle at 4:50
6:48 i hate the fact that my modern primate brain sees so many mogus because that is the entity that i had most exposure to.
Oh god what have you done...
I can't unsee it now D:
alegro was also a scholar of the dead sea scrolls, the oldest written form of the bible. he didnt just assume things from the art. he read what was written by ancient jews around the time 'jesus was a live'
Yes,exactly ! Allegro's book is one of the most important works on Christianity to ever be written. "No one comes to the Father but thru Me" is the sacred mushroom speaking !
a video on Brian murareskus book would be really cool!
No mention of the burning bush and the Acacia tree?
Your channel is the best,Mate!👍
Hildegard von Bingen and several other of the better known Christian mystics likely had one or more Neurological conditions, or Synesthesia. I have what would have been called 'visions' in an earlier age, but I'm Epileptic. Before I was diagnosed in my early 30s my experiences were extremely difficult to explain, especially because my seizures just look like I'm daydreaming from the outside. Unless you knew I was having a seizure, you wouldn't know it was actually happening.
It's a good day when a new video drops, especially of this caliber!
All psychedelics products are available, LSD, DMT, shrooms varieties, chocolate bar, gummies, and it's the best mental health therapy and heals anxiety and depression, and panic disorder
5:00 “What do you see, a rabbit or a duck?”
But it’s a snail…
A new Hochelaga video = a good day
You so need to collab with Esoterica
I think the word in the title 'Psychedelics' has the bots going crazy
Love the videos mate. They hit the spot i never knew i had in me.

still have no clue how to pronounce ur user but i’ve been following ur channel for a bit and i love ur content 🫶 keep it up
Amazing video as usual, you just put me on Hildegard art ty
Your intro music got that thx energy
It may be that Hildegards Visions have a connection to DMT. Especially the Artwork at 06:37 reminds me of "DMT-Art"...
i'm high and i was watching your other video and then this one came out and its insane
I like how the snake looks so pleased with himself
Ssssssssssssssmug.
I once heared that Hildegard von Bingen had visions because of some ocular impairment that lead to her slowly loosing eyesight. Don't know any more though
i love your content! Great work bra
I'm actually knitting a small tablecloth from a shawl pattern inspired by the Bigen illustration you showed! That's Scivias I.6, The Choirs of Angels, but the designer just called it Scivias. It's on Ravelry who wants to make it. Just be aware, it's tough until you get the hang of her special stitches
@marcelluche1851 thanks but I dont do psychedelics anymore
I love this series! Basic comment for the algorithm 🤲
you might look into archeological evidence of ancient biblical era vases and the use of pshycodelic properties of communal wine commonly ingested during Hebrew religious practices

Love this channel!!
great video. i must point out though, amanita muscaria is not a psychedelic mushroom. its a deleriant and highly toxic if consumed raw. historically they were used for ceremonial purposes and probably deliver a somewhat psychedelic experience but psylocibe cubensis are the more commonly referred to mushroom in history as they grow worldwide and are 100% psychedelic
Ezekiel, Revelations, Enoch... What if all those are reports of trips which gave people visions of what might be, will be and so forth and so on? Like perhaps they were tripping on DMT when having these visions of God and Angels and so on.
Fantastic content! Amazing video!
Will you be making a video on medieval art from different cultures outside of Europe?
