I learned about a baby slaughter thing but only in relation to Egypt and moses, not Romans. Though the hearing about the king of the Jews so they fled thing sounds familiar.

The whole being born in the feeding trough thing is a nod to Christ’s destiny. In Israel at that time, sacrificial lambs were put in mangers and brought to the temple to be inspected for blemishes. If the lamb was without flaw it would be fit for sacrifice. Also, the manger being a feeding trough brings to mind the Eucharistic destiny of Christ as our spiritual food for the journey, aka bread of life. As a bonus, Bethlehem translates to house of bread in Hebrew.

I’ve always wanted a biblically accurate angel tree topper. It would look so strange but cool. Glad that some people are willing to talk about what the Bible actually says. The actual depictions can be horrifying
Except that the tree topper isn't a Biblical angel (and the Shepherd's angels likely weren't the trippy-vision ones from Revelations): The Christmas tree is a German invention, and when Protestant Germany kicked out St. Nicholas, they introduced the Christkind, who resembles a conventional golden-haired angel with gown and crown. It's supposed to be "The embodiment of Jesus's generosity", but that's too complicated for kids, so they believe it was the angel who looked after the baby in the manger.
And Jeremiah 10 is pretty explicit about not using trees and decorating them. And the whole, not doing what the non-believers do for their gods for Him, bits too.
Also about Christmas in Australia: They hang the tree upside-down from the ceiling, otherwise Santa wouldn't be able to get to it, not being from the Southern Hemisphere.
It's worse than you think here in Aussie land. (Read my original comment post to find out how bad) But I was lazy this year and decided to just decorate a random tree in my yard with tinsel. I took a second look at it, and realised it actually has an upside down triangle shape, so as a joke we put a star at the bottom/roots of the tree. So yeah this joke ain't a joke, its real. Stay woke lol 🤣
There were at least 2 since they are always mentioned in the plural: Magi, astrologers, wise men, kings, magicians, etc. Since they brought 3 specific gifts it seemed reasonable that the Christmas tradition assumed there were three of them; although of course its not conclusive.
@@hued2542 Evangelion has many religious references, with the Magi being one of them. Saint Caspar was one of the ‘Three Kings’ and Melchior and Balthazar being the wise men.
When I visited Betlehem in 2019 and went to the nativity church I learned that it was actually common for shepards to keep their animals in man made caves, dug in the lime stone, during the nights. There are so many caves left in the area, one on which they built the nativity church, saying that it's the place where Jesus was born, tho many people believe it can be one of the many different caves in the area. It doesn't seem too far fetched that a cave like that could've been translated to stable, since it basically was their version of a stable back then.
Hahahaha you dont believe that do you? Limestone is incredibly hard. So hard that there is no way a shepard is going to dedicate YEARS to carving out a small cave for his animals. "Hey guys im about to start building my stable. I will be done in 20-25 years."
@@punishedsnake6141 My bad, it can't have been limestone. English isn't my first language. We went down in one of these caves and it was a soft stone kinda light sand colored.
@@punishedsnake6141 I tried to do some research to see what kind of stone it is, but I'm not really sure. But there are thousands of caves across Israel/Palestine, so no matter the stone, it's a historic fact that people used these caves for different purposes, like keeping there animals in during the night. So if Jesus existed and was born under the circumstances described in the bible, I think it's a pretty well based theory that he could've been born in one of these caves in Betlehem.
A stable would be a stable, whether it be made from wood or stone. It wouldn't matter if it were a freestanding building or a natural/manmade cave. It would still be a place designated for the housing of livestock. His point on this is not as noteworthy as he thinks.
@@punishedsnake6141 Dude the entire area is filled with natural caves. Limestone dissolves in rain after all. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. There was a theory I heard on why Josephus did not write about the Slaughter. It might have been because Bethlehem was a very small place( roughly fifteen hundred residents), therefore there may not have been hundreds of babies killed, but only a few. This might explain why Luke did not hear about it. Not to mention, if Josephus had heard about it, he may not have been impressed by it enough to write about it, considering how small a spectacle it was compared to other scenes Herod made, seeing as he had extremely bloodthirsty habits, Augustus himself said: “I would rather be Herod’s pig than his son.”

Excellent, as per usual. One quibble - the book of Matthew never enumerates how many Magi. There were three gifts, but never an indication of how many Magi brought them.

I know about it because in Mexico (and very likely other Catholic countries) where I grew up in this event became a liturgical feast set on December 28 and it eventually became our equivalent of April Fool's Day (and I remember it every year because it's my grandma's "unofficial" birthday for some reason).
A note about the 3 wise man: nowhere is written that there were 3 of them, everyone just thinks so bcs of the 3 presents - if they had to travel that far there is no way there were only 3 them, they would always travel in a group for far destinations But other than that small detail, great video!
Context: The number of Magi ("Wise Men") is not specified. It could be one, three, twelve, whatever. Because there were three gifts, we just show three Magi out of convenience (keep in mind that there could still be three gifts, just many of the three gifts: eg: present of gold for each of the twelve). Because of the three gifts, we show three Magi out of convenience. When there is the chance that there were 15 Magi OR just three, it'll be easier to just draw three, for convenience. As long as there are Magi to represent whatever number of them there were, it's okay.

Having a Nativity scene with biblically-accurate angels IS better. It just makes Judeo-Christianity, and all associated sects, much more hardcore with those things floating around!
it would likely still be biblically-accurate to reveal a virgin is pregnant by an angel disguised as a man with wings, so that mary doesn’t have a fucking heart attack and die or something
Because the description of the biblically-accurate angels used in this video(and in general) comes from the Old Testament and is not strict to Christianity.
One of the problems here is that the association of Christmas with Saturnalia/Sol Invictus has been repeated so often that it's considered a historical truism. However, as Classical scholars and historians of early Christianity will tell you, it's not at all that cut and dried. For example, the feast of Sol Invictus might have been promoted to compete with Christianity, not the other way around. History is just a lot more complicated at ground level, as comforting as we might find it in our own age to draw such facile connections.
Cool summary! A couple little things, "inn" is not really a mistranslation and more of a case of contextualization. There was never really a point in English culture where it was normal to have a separate room for guests in your house, so it would have had little meaning to translate it as "upper room." Also the Magi didn't visit Jesus as a baby, they visited when he was around 2 years old.
Actually, there isn’t anywhere in the Bible that says the magi visited Jesus when he was 2. People have assumed that because Herod ordered his men to kill any male baby under the age of 2.
@@zbob90 actually scholars have assumed that because we know the general area the wisemen would have travelled from and it would’ve taken them over a year or two. This fact along with knowing Luke is the most chronologically accurate biography (gospel) of Jesus, and with the description of Mary and Joseph now living in a house, not a stable, scholars believe he was around 2-3
Yes indeed they came with a big caravan and they have a lot of horses that the king Herod was stoned and ask what is the reason why they’re in the city and wisemen answer to see the king that has born because he have seen his start after that king Herod commanded to kill babies until 2 years old. A few corrections: The actual number of wise men is unknown, as it just says "men" and no number is given. There were at least two. People likely assume this from the number of gifts. (Opinion: While it may not translate to "king", a king can be a wise man, and it is possible that they were assumed to be such from the gifts that were brought since gold, frankincense, and myrrh were, and still are, rather expensive items.) The wise men also would not have been at the birth but would have arrived up to two years later as evidenced by their conversation with Herod whose order was to kill those who were two years old and under. By that time the family would have moved into a house. Jesus was still a child when the family moved back from Egypt, not an adult. At least in modern times, Jewish children are considered an adult when they reach the age of thirteen. In Luke 2 it tells of them going to the feast of the Passover in Jerusalem, which they did yearly, at the age of twelve. Mind you, these are points taken from the text of the accounts themselves, disregarding any that could be made about faith.
@@KAvanAlten I believe that's what he's saying, yes. From what I've also read, the wise men were not present at Jesus' birth -- only the shepherds were. @@KAvanAlten Please explain what is "inaccurate" about the writings of the gospels? Just because they left out details that many think is necessary, does it mean that they are inaccurate? I mean, it doesn't say WHEN Jesus was born, does it then mean that the whole account is just inaccurate? Because later on other people added things to the story that wasn't even there in the first place, like for example that Jesus was born on Dec 24/25th, when in fact this was just something to make people become Christian and still keep their pagan rituals and festivities. And in fact, the lack of details about this account, wouldn't it be logical to think that the reason behind this is because it's NOT important to know these things. For example Ecclesiates 7:1 says "A good name is better than good oil, and the day of death is better than the day of birth." So instead of like many people do during these times focusing on the fact that Jesus was born and celebrates that, they don't celebrate what he actually did, which doesn't have much to do with the events surrounding his birth, as at birth he hadn't accomplished anything. And also to take into account there is only 2 birthday celebrations mentioned in the bible, and they only give dark details about it. And also funny to notice, the majority of people celebrating Christmas, doesn't even believe in him anyway, so why even bother? I mean why isn't the world celebrating the birthday of Muhammed or why isn't the world celebrating Moses birthday? Where is the logic in that?

Read solely as myth and legend, the Bible is a rather peculiar tale of a vengeful and willful god using himself/his son to provide a means of extrajudicial salvation outside of his original ordinances. If you take away the more modern interpretation that the Abrahamic god is meant to be omni-benevolent, then it becomes something much closer to other religious myths, like those from the Roman and Grecian pantheons. Given the extreme cultural significance of the Bible throughout history and in modern times, even if you aren't a believer, it is worthwhile to read.
@@iamBlackGambit precisely, but also because it removes the inherent biases and allows you to read more critically as you would for religious texts that aren't from your group. I am very fond of a saying by Richard Dawkins: "We are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further." It's important to understand why it is you do not believe in any of the myriad religions that have ever existed so you can accurately assess if your religion is truly any different. To acknowledge that the religion you follow is likely due to convenience, indoctrination, or an attempt to seek solace in the face of the unknown. Whatever the answer is for you, and whatever your decision is, try to live in such a way that you benefit not only yourself, but others as well. Be willing to accept when someone says that they aren't interested in your attempts to proselytize, as failure to know when to quit merely sows the seeds of discord and invites anger where it isn't needed.

These are the messengers (Angelos in greek). It only talks about the other types of angels when we see the Cherubim defending holy places, or we get to the apocalyptic literature where the prophets look at heaven. They have different jobs, so just trying to get the shock value of "biblically accurate angels" while not genuinely understanding the source material is a bit cheap.

@Garry Ellison but… the literal text has been disproven by scientists time and time again. So u really can’t believe in the Bible literally unless u are dillusional. The Bible is a collection of stories (both made up and inspired by real events) to unpack moral philosophies. It should be analyzed, not taken literally. For instance, the entire creation story in the Bible does not line up with science whatsoever
@@TechnoVisionTV “Science.” Elaborate. I’ll listen if you can back it up. Who exactly disproved the Bible? How? To what degree? In what context? You’ll find that unconventional science changes quite often.
@@TechnoVisionTV You fool deceived by Satan. Before science WAS GOD. Science isn't over God, never has been and never will be. Furthermore, the same science that you worship has found archeological discoveries of things that happened literally thousands of years ago that the Holy Scriptures have recorded, such as the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. You can go catch a flight right now to the Dead Sea and still find holes of sulfur in the ground from when God destroyed the city, but you're a fool, so you won't believe it. Another piece of evidence that supports the scriptures as literal is the fact that every single prophecy told has come and will come true. The prophecy about the birth of Christ came hundreds of years before Christ was actually born into the body of a man. The devil has your mind and you fail to see it. REPENT or you will lift your eyes up in hell.

I am a Christian and have grown up in a Christian school, so I've been taught much of this so many times XD, it's honestly surprising how many people still don't know much of this stuff. Granted, I'm fairly certain the Bible doesn't specify the type of angels that were present at the birth or that appeared to the shepherds, so it might not be entirely accurate to have those ones, but they are Biblically accurate to a specific type of angel called, I believe, Ophanim. Those things remind me of Hermaeus Mora from Elder Scrolls and it's why I think they're really interesting XD. There are some thing that were left out, like the fact that the wise men most likely didn't arrive until at least a week later. But, then again, it's very hard to really tell exactly when they did arrive.
I heard that they arrived on the third Tuesday of the fourth month, but my source may not be terribly accurate as they also claim the wise men rode in on anti-gravity Harleys and looked like ZZ Top, were from Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff and spoke in a broken combination of Klingon and Elvish.

A few things from someone who actually believes the Gospel accounts (also believing Jesus was born around 4 BC!) 1. We cannot assume we know all the census dates. Considering other historical evidences align with the birth-around-4-BC timeline (records of Pontius Pilate’s rule), it is safe to assume we do not have all the records of every census. 2. The Magi and their knowledge of biblical prophecies can be traced to Daniel’s writings in Babylon! It’s really cool to see that Daniel, as one of the leading “wise men” in Babylon, was able to pass down his knowledge through the Persian Empire all the way to Jesus’ birth! 3. This is a common misconception, but the Magi weren’t actually present at the nativity, hence the discrepancies between Gospels. They likely visited Jesus when he was a toddler, before the family left for Egypt. 4. LOL biblically accurate angels 5. “There is no historical evidence” that Herod killed a ton of children (yet). Well yeah, who’s gonna record that they killed a ton of babies? That would be embarrassing. We omit things from history today, it isn’t crazy to assume Herod could’ve done the same. It’s unlikely anyone will read this but I just wanted to set a few things straight about my beliefs to avoid a one-sided argument or straw man arguments in the comments LOL (Edited to correct "0 AD" to "4 BC"-- 0 AD doesn't exist SMH).
Yeah that bit about how all those children wern't recorded killed..made me think of a certain nation near the free and independent Taiwan, also the deaths could've been marked down as something else like "starvation" or "mesothelioma"
@@jackalenterprisesofohio exactlyyyy-- we do this thing all the time. it isn't right, but it happens. it would be unwise to discredit the Gospels entirely on this fact.
Concerning number five, it'd be COMPLETELY in character for Herod to order a massacre of babies as he was in a paranoid state at the time. He had ordered a bunch of mass killings and killed his own children prior, with Emperor Augustus joking it'd be safer to be Herod's pet pig than one of his sons. If I recall correctly, he also fell ill to a disease that ate at his skin, which might've been fournier's gangrene.

The date issue is quite interesting, I study history and we just discussed this in class and according to my professor most historians think that Luke is more likely to be correct. After all he describes a real event (the census), while Herod is often described as just evil and corrupt, so having a bunch of infants murdered is totally on brand for him, at the same time suggesting such an action for the Romans (who provincialised the area after Herod's death, which is why there was a census). The author of Matthew likely either didn't quite know or didn't care that Herod was dead already or maybe the dating was added at a later date.

hearing the story of the manger always makes me think of Sacha cohan as Ali G interviewing a bunch of religious scholars and one of the guys is talking about how Joseph, Mary and Jesus had to stay in a manger because there were no rooms at the inn or anywhere in town and Sacha says "Well thats because it was Christmas in'nit?" 😂
The dating of Christ's birth to December 5th comes from the fact that we know when John the Baptist was conceived (Luke 1:5, Luke 1:23-24), and that we know that Mary conceived when Elizabeth was 6 months pregnant with Saint John (Luke 1:26). The course of Abia mentioned corresponds to one of the priestly courses of the Jewish temple. Since we know how the priestly courses align with the calendar, this allows us to pinpoint the conception of John the Baptist to be about September 27th, 1 BC. 6 months later gets us to March 27th for the conception of the Lord, and 9 months after that is about December 27th for His birth.
Well said. I really dislike the modern myth that December 25th was "picked" because it was used to coverup a pagan tradition when a lot priests were very obsessive over getting these kinds of dates right and how it's probably more common that _other_ cultures added their local traditions to Christmas and not vice-versa. People in the US fight over who "makes the right pie" because the pie is from their local culture and food, not because was there an ancient pagan pumpkin thing in the north and a shoe-fly thing in the south. It's literally why Italy has a big feast and Scandinavia has yule. They said "okay we're going to celebrate Christmas now, but we're not giving up out local tradition of .... that is harmless!"
Correction: Myrrh may have have been used to embalm the dead but throughout the middle east and Africa it's actually used as incense and has been for more than a few millennia. It was also at some point used as an additive in alcoholic beverages.
True, but the symbolism is still there. If anything, the multi-faceted nature of myrrh and its uses further augments the symbolism of Christ and His destiny.
@@Michael-Archonaeus Actually no. The Greeks and Romans used several different herbs as abortifacients - with varying degrees of effectiveness - but never mistletoe as it doesn't even grow in southern Europe. A common interpretation I've heard of the gifts that the three magi bring is that they're symbolic of Jesus' roles: Gold for his role as a King, frankincense for his role as a God or figure of worship, and myrrh for his role as a sacrifice.

Me too. I've actually been considering trying to make one....
Except that the tree topper isn't a Biblical angel (and the Shepherd's angels likely weren't the trippy-vision ones from Revelations):
The Christmas tree is a German invention, and when Protestant Germany kicked out St.
@@briantruskey1432 He’s asking you not to be SERIOUS about it, home decor may be in a different category.
Also about Christmas in Australia: They hang the tree upside-down from the ceiling, otherwise Santa wouldn't be able to get to it, not being from the Southern Hemisphere.
While this is a joke, I do want to see someone from australia hang a christmas tree upside down just cause
Ariana Grande fans do that everywhere!
It's worse than you think here in Aussie land.
(Read my original comment post to find out how bad)
But I was lazy this year and decided to just decorate a random tree in my yard with tinsel. I took a second look at it, and realised it actually has an upside down triangle shape, so as a joke we put a star at the bottom/roots of the tree.
So yeah this joke ain't a joke, its real. Stay woke lol 🤣
It had to be Australia
Don’t you mean the right way up?
It wasn’t mentioned in the Bible that there are “3” magi. There were just 3 gifts and people just assumed there are 3 magi/kings.
There were at least 2 since they are always mentioned in the plural: Magi, astrologers, wise men, kings, magicians, etc.
Since they brought 3 specific gifts it seemed reasonable that the Christmas tradition assumed there were three of them; although of course its not conclusive.
Magi? Like ritsko’s mums magi system?

And they did not have trees to waste on lumber for protecting their sheep and goats from the literal lions that were endemic to the area at the time. The number of Magi ("Wise Men") is not specified. It could be one, three, twelve, whatever.

Also a note, they were not there when Jesus was born and probably showed up about two years after the fact

Why throw the Judeo in there? Jews don’t believe in Jesus
Because the description of the biblically-accurate angels used in this video(and in general) comes from the Old Testament and is not strict to Christianity.

@@jmvt3 Not entirely accurate. Jews believe in Jesus as a part of the religion - just not that he was the messiah/son of God.
I just want to mention he used an old article from The Guardian as the source for this argument. Not really the most reputable source I might add.
A few corrections:
The actual number of wise men is unknown, as it just says "men" and no number is given. There were at least two. People likely assume this from the number of gifts. (Opinion: While it may not translate to "king", a king can be a wise man, and it is possible that they were assumed to be such from the gifts that were brought since gold, frankincense, and myrrh were, and still are, rather expensive items.)
The wise men also would not have been at the birth but would have arrived up to two years later as evidenced by their conversation with Herod whose order was to kill those who were two years old and under.
The gospel is actually not specifically mentioning them being there on that specific day, is that would you are saying?

I love watching his videos. I'm Christian myself, and it's so interesting to find out a lot of new stuff about the Bible. I'm pretty sure it's interesting for people who arent even Christian's themselves
Same :)
@@mndlessdrwer why do you read it as myth? you dont think a God or the God of the bible created the universe?
The messed up thing is this stuff is new to some people claiming to be Christian. All you have to do is read and a bible and find out literally all this stuff.

when you learn about biblical accurate angels, suddenly evangelion (the anime) makes a little bit more sense
@XtraMedium 77 did you read the comment? He gave an explanation for the design choice in that anime. There is no comparison
I find it annoying, to be honest because they claim to be accurate while completely ignoring the fact that it talks about angels that look like humans multiple times in the old testament.
@@petermenzies9193 but they showed humanoid Angels in the Video? For example when Gabriel (1:34) is mentioned or the unknown Angel (2:26). Or did you mean something else? If so I am sorry!
The first time I discovered how angels were described in the Bible I watched the video „what angels really look like“, the first or second result on yt and they too awknowledged that there were humanoid angels too. I don’t know if the are doing that for shock value since.. to be honest I think hearing about how angels mostly looked nothing like humans is more shocking than otherwise.

Just don't ever be swayed to deny God or his word.. don't let people do that to ya.

A few things from someone who actually believes the Gospel accounts (also believing Jesus was born around 4 BC!)
4. LOL biblically accurate angels
5. “There is no historical evidence” that Herod killed a ton of children (yet). Well yeah, who’s gonna record that they killed a ton of babies? That would be embarrassing. We omit things from history today, it isn’t crazy to assume Herod could’ve done the same.
It’s unlikely anyone will read this but I just wanted to set a few things straight about my beliefs to avoid a one-sided argument or straw man arguments in the comments LOL
(Edited to correct "0 AD" to "4 BC"-- 0 AD doesn't exist SMH).
Yeah that bit about how all those children wern't recorded killed..made me think of a certain nation near the free and independent Taiwan, also the deaths could've been marked down as something else like "starvation" or "mesothelioma"
@@jackalenterprisesofohio exactlyyyy-- we do this thing all the time. it isn't right, but it happens. it would be unwise to discredit the Gospels entirely on this fact.
yup. I made a comment regarding a couple of different things (moreso really points of clarification). I appreciate your attention to accuracy.
@@roosterman8601 Oh, agreed, it would have made sense if it happened, but it doesn't seem to have. His issues were not unknown and commented on by other peoples and nations. This would have been quite noteworthy and yet we have...nothing? That's just weird and is a reason to be suspicious.
This is awesome! Such an interesting topic to discuss with friends during Christmas dinner.
Ill be telling my friends this:
6:11
The date issue is quite interesting, I study history and we just discussed this in class and according to my professor most historians think that Luke is more likely to be correct. After all he describes a real event (the census), while Herod is often described as just evil and corrupt, so having a bunch of infants murdered is totally on brand for him, at the same time suggesting such an action for the Romans (who provincialised the area after Herod's death, which is why there was a census). The author of Matthew likely either didn't quite know or didn't care that Herod was dead already or maybe the dating was added at a later date.
So does that show a bias against Herod? (legit question) For what purpose?
@@pamelqtaylor8335 no one likes a puppet king. He was evil and corrupt because he was placed there to rule. Like an out of country government official controlling a small town or something. (These are just my reasonings on why Herod is viewed negatively)
This is also why you would give birth in a cave or a manger. You would be hiding if not from him from zealots who will kill you for having sex out of marriage.
The fact that people at one point proudly proclaiming that they indeed owned Jesus’ prepuce, or FORESKIN, is _insane_

I too learned a bit of Christmas history, and it is pretty accurate to what you say. Great job!

Interesting response. I would warn you, though, that the faith you describe sounds rather "lukewarm" as Jesus put it, which He found displeasing. God wishes to cultivate a close friendship with His creations, with Christ serving as the catalyst. Floating through life on autopilot is anachronistic to this kind of relationship, and a faith unquestioned is inherently weak.
