Even bible experts can't agree on the exegesis of certain passages, and with the amount of sects within Christianity, it's hard to find an authority which will agree on the exact meaning without being biased towards their sect's beliefs. That's why I always found Christianity in America especially as diverting from the original message. Nowadays you have certain churches doing mime acts during funerals with full on face paint and dancing, something which Jesus never said to do nor did. Paganism has infiltrated the original message of Jesus and corrupted it

      I would agree, but it is such a specific thing to use as a metaphor

    • @Pingwn
      @Pingwn 3 роки тому +25

      @Barney connecting those two spastic things is kind of random, typically there is some connection, some context to the metaphor and not just a random example of something.
      Granted there is an Aramaic phrase from the Jewish sages about passing an elephant through the hole of a niddle, which makes a bit more sense since if you want to use an animal that represents something big you are more likely to choose an elephant rather than a camel.
      The point still stands - this is kind of very random example for something Impossible to do where it would have been easier to choose more intuitive examples of impossible tasks.

    • @Greggery
      @Greggery 3 роки тому +48

      I don't think he was arguing whether or not the camel line was right or wrong
      he just meant that a rope would have had better context in the metapor since we use string for needles, and a rope is an exaggerated form of the string
      which still would have the same outcome as you stated which it's an impossible task easier than the rich being righteous

    • @DevinBradleySmith
      @DevinBradleySmith 3 роки тому +10

      The needle was slang for an arch in Jerusalem that just barely fit a camel! So the camel had to be stripped of all of it’s baggage to pass through. So the meaning becomes “strip yourself of worldly things to enter the kingdom of God” :)

    For the camel and the eye of the needle, I think the end meaning is the same. To become rich more often than not (overwhelmingly more often at that) means you have to give into the sins of greed, lust, and pride. The vast majority of the rich become rich off the suffering and extortion of others, so it would be about as easy to pass a rope or camel through the eye of a needle, as it would for them to get into heaven (which is to say, impossible).

    A similar metaphor about the camel going into the eye of the needle is mentioned in the Quran (bible of muslims), ["Surely those who receive our revelations with denial and arrogance, the gates of heaven will not be opened for them, nor will they enter Paradise until (a camel) passes through the eye of a needle. This is how We reward the wicked. "] -Surah Al-A'raf Verse 40.
    Here the word camel in Arabic can be pronounced in two ways according to scholars. First, as "Al-Jamal" meaning camel the animal while others pronounced it a little bit differently as "Al-Jommal" which in Arabic doesn't require the changing of letters, meaning the big ropes used aboard ships.

    hey! I currently binge watching your channel as I’ve just discovered it. this video reminded me about the opening scene in Guy Ritchie’s Snatch, where a bunch of robbers dressed as hasidic jews were discussing wrong translation from biblical Hebrew, and how the word ‘Virgin’ was translated in the literal sense, leading to a literal virgin giving birth to a child. you probably won’t see this message, but I’m curious if this is a real thing.
    ps: love the amount of research you’re doing for your vids!

    I recon when they say, “it is easier for a camel to go though the eye of the needle” (a sewing needle) ,they are implying that doing that impossible task would be easier then someone rich getting into heaven. As normally wealth has nothing to do with going to heaven. At least that how I take it.
    Quick edit: I don’t think it’s meant to be taken literally and it could have been a figure speech back then.

    There's also quite a bit of evidence that the commandment "Thou shalt not kill" is actually supposed to read "Thou shalt not murder". With the first version, it becomes strange to read how God first commands His people to not kill and then orders them to exterminate their enemies.

    So I get asked a lot about why I’m not a Christian anymore and honestly it can be summed up to one single verse in Revelations 21:8 (KJV) “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
    This doesn’t sound like a god… this sounds like a very angry human who is basically trying to scare his subordinates into believing that if they simply lie, they will burn forever… this sounds very human to me, this doesn’t sound like a father talking to his children, this isn’t how a groom talks to his bride, this doesn’t sound like a Shepard talking to his sheep, this sounds like a sadistic priest who got tired of his friends getting laid.

    Just had a little story to share regarding the camel-rope case. In Bengal (now divided into the Indian state of West Bengal and the country Bangladesh, thanks to colonialism), we have many strange stories about Hindu deities that you won't find elsewhere. One such deals with Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi (a couple) observing an austere poor priest and a callous drunkard who somehow always have enough money to drink. It's a story to illustrate how important is the trust in God for one's stability in life. I won't be going into the story here, but in some versions of that tale you have the mention of passing a big animal through the eye of a needle. In some 'Mangal Kabya' (verse stories about local deities) the incident of a god passing an elephant through the eye of a needle is mentioned. It's sort of a litmus test for believers- if you think god can do that, you pass, because technically god can do anything.
    Interesting how such a weird incident can be present in two different traditions.
