Just as a reminder: "miracle" in the positive sense is a more modern thinking. In the past, any perplexing or incredibly rare event was labelled as a "miracle" as in "unbelievable", as, of course , people in that time and, especially with such a subject, wouldn't use "unbelievable" as these are biblical and the word simply wouldn't make sense.
One thing that differs Christianity from the religions/mythologies/folklore it replaced is that Christianity separates the divine from the mundane. The world is described entirely mechanistically. A miracle is when the divine intervenes in the mundane. Of course, the Europeans didn't completely lose their beliefs in the supernatural or that everything had a spirit/soul/essence. E.g., the river, forest had some kind of spirit. But that's beside the point.
That explains the game 'blasphemous' which is based on fictional Spanish Christian setting. That game had a being named 'miracle'. And I was confused on why people in that game call it a miracle when many thing it did was far from positive. Now I know
The big difference is that Lovecraft's horror was atheist, or anti-theist. It posited a hostile universe and reflected the horror of an atheist concluding he was alone in an uncaring and hostile world. In contrast, the Christian cosmic horror, as you might call it, may posit a universe of unfathomable horror and danger and evil, but God is still master of it all and will ultimately save and protect those who look to him. Some of this optimism may have slipped, societally, during the Black Death, but other than that, never really left Christian society.
@Usasodead I can see why you could say that. Lovecraft was a racist who feared the incursion of "alien" races, and he wrote about alien beings But I don't think that's really the core of it. No, the defining quote of Lovecraft is this: “The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.” This is Lovecraft's central theme: It's not alien races or beings that are the most terrifying thing in the universe. That's not the fundamental point. The fundamental point is that he (or at least the position he takes in all his writing) disagrees with the "modern" notion that "the more you know . . . the better things are." He disagrees with the idea that the more science advances, the better off we will be, and that the more an individual knows, the better off he will be. In my opinion, this is clearly the result of his experience with atheism. He knew that God didn't exist, and he found himself more miserable for it. He knew that he was in a hostile or at least indifferent universe, and that was a horrific burden that his believing ancestors didn't have to bear. I hope you'll forgive me for quoting the entirety of "Dover Beach, but I think it sums it up pretty well from someone who was almost a contemporary of Lovecraft's: "The sea is calm tonight. The tide is full, the moon lies fair Upon the straits; on the French coast the light Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand, Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay. Come to the window, sweet is the night-air! Only, from the long line of spray Where the sea meets the moon-blanched land, Listen! you hear the grating roar Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling, At their return, up the high strand, Begin, and cease, and then again begin, With tremulous cadence slow, and bring The eternal note of sadness in. Sophocles long ago Heard it on the Ægean, and it brought Into his mind the turbid ebb and flow Of human misery; we Find also in the sound a thought, Hearing it by this distant northern sea. The Sea of Faith Was once, too, at the full, and round earth’s shore Lay like the folds of a bright girdle furled. But now I only hear Its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar, Retreating, to the breath Of the night-wind, down the vast edges drear And naked shingles of the world. Ah, love, let us be true To one another! for the world, which seems To lie before us like a land of dreams, So various, so beautiful, so new, Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light, Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain; And we are here as on a darkling plain Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight, Where ignorant armies clash by night." Thomas Arnold figured he could carry on loving and that could bring meaning to a meaningless world. Lovecraft disagreed. He would say that Arnold's brain hadn't correlated its contents and that Arnold was living in denial. Lovecraft, in facing the cold, empty space of reality, found only despair.
Repent and follow Jesus my friend! Repenting doesn't mean confessing your sins to others, but to stop doing them altogether. Belief in Messiah alone is not enough to get you into heaven - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36). Contemplate how the Roman empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13. Revelation 17 confirms that it is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years to accomplish the religion of the Israelites C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate though because you can start a relationship with God and have proof. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life. - Revelation 3:20 Revelation has been unfolding since Jesus died. The Popes have claimed to be equal to God and set themselves in Jesus' place (antichrist(s)). Vatican City (Which is its own nation BTW) have risen up to fulfill the role of the false prophet Regarding the man of lawlessness or antichrist, 2 Thessalonians 2:4 says “Who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sits in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.” The restrainer that the Apostle Paul was referring to in 2 Thessalonians was the Western Roman Emperor, who held back the Popes from taking power. Once the last Western Roman Emperor was removed from power in 476 AD, the Pope was given civil and ecclesiastic authority over Rome; healing the deadly head wound of the beast in Revelation 13, as they took the Emperors title of Pontifex Maximus, leader of the church and state. “We may according to the fullness of our power, dispose of the law and dispense above the law. Those whom the Pope of Rome doth separate, it is not a man that separates them but God. For the Pope holdeth place on earth, not simply of a man but of the true God.” (Source: “Decretals of Gregory IX,” Book 1, chapter 3.) Pope Pius V blasphemed, “The Pope and God are the same, so he has all power in Heaven and earth.” (Source: Pope Pius V, quoted in Barclay, Cities Petrus Bertanous Chapter XXVII: 218.) Pope Leo XIII declared, “We hold upon this earth the place of God Almighty.” (Source: Pope Leo XIII Encyclical Letter, June 20, 1894) The antichrist sea beast of Revelation points to the office of the papacy, the Popes of Rome, who controlled the Roman beast for 1,260 years, from 538-1798 AD. Daniel 7:25 says “And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.” The Popes of Rome spoke against Elohim and proclaimed to be God. They reigned for 1,260 years, from 538-1798 AD. during which they caused tens of millions of saints to be killed. The Pope’s title is Vicar of Christ, which in Latin is ‘Vicarius Filii Dei’, and equates numerically to the number 666

That 'early drawing of a sloth' is hilarious. It's just so casual. It looks like a man with a bear's body just going about his business like it's totally normal.
Years ago while doing research for a story I was writing, I came across a blog post with a theory that the Ophanim was not a literal wheel, but an angel or group of angels, who were spinning, and they spun so fast they were just a blur, so to the (no doubt terrified) observer on the ground they looked like circles/wheels with many eyes. Something to do with the translation from the original Hebrew. Anyway, great video as always!
Now THAT is incredibly interesting. That is such a unique and insightful idea that it somehow manages to make some sense out of the unexplainable. The implications of that being the case are also interesting-Ezekiel not being able to understand or accurately describe what he was seeing would lend credence to the notion that he DID actually see and experience that rather than come up with it himself.
When you mentioned these things being holy, it took me back to a time in my younger years when I was studying the Bible. I studied Hebrew and Greek and wanted to get where all the stories came from. I even bought an Aramaic dictionary believe it or not. LOL. Anyway in studying the word holy, came to the conclusion that most biblical scholars did also: that when we see the word holy in religious texts it does not mean godly or divine, rather means set apart. Something which is designed for a single purpose. And if you think about it it makes sense. In the early days of the church (whether Catholic or Protestant) things were blessed or consecrated which was symbolic of setting it aside for a purpose. So this book makes a lot of sense. These Creatures and visions are considered holy BECAUSE they are different. They are set apart from the normal. Great video by the way... Excellent script and narration.
and... if you think about how the story is that in the beginning was nothing but god, and then god made from nothing what god made... god was said to make everything when there were "no things" - nothing, when everything was one. then god said words and gave something a name and a label and it became a "thing." my point is just that everything is therefore divine in that sense as everything is made from/part of, god, as it would follow that everything is part and particle of god, no?
Definitely on his way to be one of the best, I believe that his storytelling and interesting topics are great and can't wait to see what he's going to do in the future!
I’m so glad you pointed out the weird HP Lovecraft connection to catholic art. I’ve been thinking about this subject for awhile and can’t help but believe that it must’ve been his influence. I think Bloodborne draws a connecting line as well with the many-eyed unfathomable creatures, worshipped by man as gods.
If you're dying to find new and miraculous beasts, look no further than the deepest depths of the ocean or the most isolated jungles/geographies. There are many animals we've yet to actually document, let alone name. Great video! Thanks for piquing the imagination!
Watching an "EV Nautilus" episode there was a kind of sponge or maybe a jelly. They didn't know what it was. So they took the scientific approach: "Poke it." 😅
That's so true. Lord knows what is alive deep in the ocean or deep in the jungle. I was fascinated by, during the pandemic shut down when all these animals and birds that they thought were extinct came out and was spotted for the first time in decades. If end times does happen all the animals that are hiding will come out and take over the world.
That chick (baby chicken, not a girl) with two sets of legs is actually a mutatuion that can happen. It's really cool to see real world things represented in these early illustrations.
Necro-post but some birds carry their chicks under their wings. The marsh Jacana bird has long legs, so his chicks legs hang out and it looks like he has many legs.
Yep, that scale type dry skin disease. It's supposed to be painful. Can you imagine being labeled as a half chicken person because you have a dry skin condition or over producing skin condition. That had to be really hard back in that time period. 😢
Eeeeeeeh! 😉 I see what you did there. A "chick" with 2 sets of "legs", get it "legs" 😉 I'm just effin around. I've heard of that mutation. Also the city I live in has tons of pigeons (like all large cities) and there's sooooo many with a clubbed foot. No claws at all. At first I thought maybe a seagull bit the foot off and it healed that way but I see so many like that. Kinda feel bad for them.
I always find the idea of celestial events being bad omens a bit funny. Sure, the transit of Halley's Comet coincided with the Norman invasion of England, but that made it a pretty darn good omen for the Normans.
@@NuancdNecromncr well to be fair, a comet burning in the atmosphere looks a lot different than a meteor thousands of miles away traveling through space.
I'm surprised you didn't mention that Lovecraft quote at the end when you were talking about the unknown... "The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown."

I think it's because we culturally aren't really afraid of these things. And the artwork in not in the style we would associate with horror today. Would the author's audience have viewed this as horrifying though?
I can easily understand your point of view if you detach reality from this. But I don’t think that was the intention of the author/ illustrator. I don’t know where they got some of those ideas from like the baby sky battle to name just one. But it seems like the majority of these paintings are in fact reality for so many, which is why it inspires fear for many people. Some people take it seriously because of their beliefs and other choose not to.
On the depiction of God's throne that four-headed angel is actually called tetramorph. It is a symbol of the Gospels: the lion represents Mark, the bull is for Luke, the eagle for John, and the angel is Matthew. Usually they are shown separately and are the integral part of medieval art, especially in manuscripts. And that angel of clouds and column legs feeding a book to Saint John is a copy after the famous Dürer woodcat of The Apocalyps. It is interesting to see how the author was inspired by still contemporary prints of famous artists such as Cranah the Elder or Dürer.
It might have started like angel depictions but very early on it became more of a Evangelist representation. All these famous early medieval illuminated manuscripts (Book of Kells, Book of Lindisfarne) have it connected to the Evangelists. Also in this combined form it is usually present in frescoes of Byzantine or Romanesque churches. Though I should say that when it comes to iconography it is often murky and has more than one meaning, especially if we're talking about such an old iconographical motif. I didn't specialize in that art, my field is renaissance and baroque art so it has been a while since I learned about it, but thetramorph I do remember.
It's pretty fascinating how many of these are recognizable phenomena even through the artist's colourful interpretation. The flaming sky looks a lot like a fire rainbow, which occurs when cirrus clouds are present and the sun hits them at a very specific angle, and I think the "Red warrior" and his fortress may perhaps be red sprites - huge electric discharges that occur high above thunderstorms, which can appear vaguely humanoid or castle-like. I imagine many of the "Human faced" creatures are simply deformed with short, pug-like muzzles and were interpreted by the illustrator from descriptions as having human faces. The first one appears to be a bear, rather than a sloth.
Every time I watch a Hotchelaga video, I have to put aside a few minutes first just to get into the right state of mind. I need to pay proper attention, as to not miss anything.

another great video, hochelaga. many others who talk about interesting historical times never cover the medieval times. please keep covering this time period - i don’t see anyone else doing it, and it’s really, really interesting. the beautiful visuals and your soothing voice gives your videos a particular edge that i truly enjoy. please keep going, i love your content so much!
I saw a bolide for the first time recently. Came down almost vertically dead ahead from my perspective as I drove down a 100km/h road at night. The sphere in the sky would probably be "earthquake light" (an actual natural phenomenon), which explain why the ancient people saw light in the sky that destroying a city

Thank you for your videos. they're very interesting. I was in a mental hospital a few years back, I was suffering of hallucinations of demons and angels I'm glad I am fine now but it was very scary.
What I find interesting about this book is that it reveals something interesting about sociology: I think that people naturally drift towards thinking the end of the world is coming when there is a lot of social stress. This book was made in the turbulent time during the Reformation. Practically the same thing is happening today, with increased political and social strife the end of the world is basically a fact to some, especially younger people. I personally don't really subscribe to that view (Although I don't blame people for thinking it).
I got the Taschen facsimile of the book because of this video. It is so full of beautiful, strange imagery I can't even express how happy I am. Thank you Hochelaga!
was wondering if you could do an analysis on this type of christian art exactly? especially on illuminated texts, which are often equally beautiful and strange. mostly I was wondering about what type of painting techniques that were used, as examples such as this one took place at the same time as the rest of the traditional renaissance but look so different.
9:36 Both of these creatures have real life counterparts. First, chickens like the one the left already exist in real life and are simply a mutation. appreciate this channel and the fella behind it. probably would never have found out about any of the contents in a lot of these videos if i never found this channel. keep up the good work
6:18 the bolide explaination would be the most immediate conclusion to draw, but i feel the accounts that the spheres returned to the sky would imply otherwise. you'd think someone thoughtful like pliny the elder would make that distinction only if it were specifically what they witnessed, and a bolide wouldn't quite fit that account
Medieval art is just... fascinating. So strange and otherworldly as opposed to our current "modern" art. Your presentation too is what keeps me coming back. You don't shit on Christians or the religious. You just present the content and explain the phenomenon behind it in a respectful way.
The red building and warrior is quite interesting, I wonder if it's based off any previous works or if it's an interpretation of some sort of war or conflict.
I think they were just cloud shapes. The red coloring means they were probably witnessed at around dawn or dusk. They were probably cumulus or cumulonimbus clouds that appeared to have those shapes due to light and shadow. Pareidolia, basically. I've seen pictures floating around the Internet within the last few years of clouds supposedly summoning similar omens, some in jest. There's one picture making the rounds of a cloud that looks like the dragon head from the Mortal Kombat logo. I've seen some shaped like hands, crosses, angels, or even demons, with people posting about how it's a sign of God or the End Times.
@@PatrickRsGhost Sounds likely. I wonder what it meant to the people of old and what they believed happened. A celestial conversation? A divine duel? The interpretations of the Medieval people of events we now see as normal is fascinating.

I studied in a Catholic intern for 4 years and when I was there I saw a lot of strangers for a Catholic institution remember that almost every day at meals we used to listen to recordings of founding sermons, warning about what they called bagar, which was basically, and basically the end of the world that had everything perfect im, one that like everything would be, gathered the secrets about and i really was a believer in everything the nuns thought piously everything and that kind of scared me, they thought there would be 3 days of darkness where demons appear and imitate people that 3 people of habits of darkness and images for us to open as they catch us, their doors that the cross of darkness would turn into swords that they would use to fight like digs against these demons and that the only light that a candle has would be specially guarded specially for that moment, the candle would be lit by our guardian angel who would remain visible for us, for them the whole world would be changed and should suffer the consequences of their vile deeds, so they alone would remain and the end of the three days of darkness would judge everyone leaving only the righteous on earth the chosen of god would found or what they called the kingdom of mary, a kingdom that would be like in the middle ages, there would be no temptation just peace and plenty, and all that was of the world would be destroyed and the like... this is just the tip of the cybernete it's really bizarre to talk about it, but they really relate to it, believing that all this would really happen and they even brought "evidence" to show us how all that was true, "evidence" with natural disasters rivers turning red like wine and images of saints crying blood and stuff, it's bizarre to think they told This is for 11-15 year olds... sorry if I wrote something wrong or a little incoherent inghes is not my native language
As a former Catholic I remember in middle school there was talk and rumors of the "three days of darkness" and it sounded pretty similarly to what you mentioned, it was attributed to Our Lady of Fatima which was a supposed apparition of the Virgin Mary to a group of children in Portugal in 1917 (so right in the middle of World War I) and I mention it for those who have never heard of that event. That version of the Virgin Mary is pretty popular with the kinds of Catholics who are into apocalyptic stuff in my experience.

The divine monsters depicted are a literal representation of angels and their true forms as mentioned in the Bible and the apocrypha. The picture to the left of God is a cherubim and the wheel form is called a Throne. Hope that helps!
I got this book thinking what a great primary resource on history! This is even better because I can watch this and go through my book!!!!!!!! Thank you!
10:00 Well, the angel with the heads of a man, lion, eagle and bull, while often drawn together, are 4 seperate angels, which represent the 4 Apostles which wrote the 4 Apistles. Often called a Tetramorph when shown insolation. It doesn't take much research to come across this information. That particular creation is symbology, not strictly things of their own. The choice of each creature for each, symbolic of them as people and their writings. EDIT: As well as the large wheels, not really being hybrid, rather, a rather bland depiction of a cherubim.

The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.”
This is Lovecraft's central theme: It's not alien races or beings that are the most terrifying thing in the universe.
I hope you'll forgive me for quoting the entirety of "Dover Beach, but I think it sums it up pretty well from someone who was almost a contemporary of Lovecraft's:
"The sea is calm tonight.
The tide is full, the moon lies fair
Upon the straits; on the French coast the light
Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand,
Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay.
Come to the window, sweet is the night-air!
Only, from the long line of spray
Where the sea meets the moon-blanched land,
Listen! you hear the grating roar
Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling,
At their return, up the high strand,
Begin, and cease, and then again begin,
With tremulous cadence slow, and bring
The eternal note of sadness in.
Sophocles long ago
Heard it on the Ægean, and it brought
Into his mind the turbid ebb and flow
Of human misery; we
Find also in the sound a thought,
Hearing it by this distant northern sea.
The Sea of Faith
Was once, too, at the full, and round earth’s shore
Lay like the folds of a bright girdle furled.
But now I only hear
Its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar,
Retreating, to the breath
Of the night-wind, down the vast edges drear
And naked shingles of the world.
Ah, love, let us be true
To one another! for the world, which seems
To lie before us like a land of dreams,
So various, so beautiful, so new,
Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light,
Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain;
And we are here as on a darkling plain
Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,
Where ignorant armies clash by night."
Thomas Arnold figured he could carry on loving and that could bring meaning to a meaningless world. Lovecraft disagreed. He would say that Arnold's brain hadn't correlated its contents and that Arnold was living in denial. Lovecraft, in facing the cold, empty space of reality, found only despair.
@Usasodead You're too kind. I could be wrong. It's just my opinion.
- Revelation 3:20
Revelation has been unfolding since Jesus died. The Popes have claimed to be equal to God and set themselves in Jesus' place (antichrist(s)). Vatican City (Which is its own nation BTW) have risen up to fulfill the role of the false prophet
Regarding the man of lawlessness or antichrist, 2 Thessalonians 2:4 says “Who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sits in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.” The restrainer that the Apostle Paul was referring to in 2 Thessalonians was the Western Roman Emperor, who held back the Popes from taking power.
For the Pope holdeth place on earth, not simply of a man but of the true God.” (Source: “Decretals of Gregory IX,” Book 1, chapter 3.)
Pope Pius V blasphemed, “The Pope and God are the same, so he has all power in Heaven and earth.” (Source: Pope Pius V, quoted in Barclay, Cities Petrus Bertanous Chapter XXVII: 218.)
Pope Leo XIII declared, “We hold upon this earth the place of God Almighty.” (Source: Pope Leo XIII Encyclical Letter, June 20, 1894)
The antichrist sea beast of Revelation points to the office of the papacy, the Popes of Rome, who controlled the Roman beast for 1,260 years, from 538-1798 AD.

I was not mentally prepared for "The Cosmic Baby Battle of 1536", just when you think medieval art couldn't get any weirder.
DUDE! I was about to type the same thing. I almost choked on my coffee.
What if you saw it today?
How haven’t you heard of The Cosmic Baby Battle of 1636? Truly one of the bloodiest battles in history. Fortunately, there were no casualties.
Humans are fucking weird
Those medieval lot just keep pulling them out them out the bag.
That 'early drawing of a sloth' is hilarious. It's just so casual. It looks like a man with a bear's body just going about his business like it's totally normal.
"yeah baby I'm a bear thing I know it"😎😎😎
Even funnier how the guys ride alongside it aren’t even paying any mind to it. As if that that’s just the kinda thing they encounter daily 😭😂
Medieval paintings of cats also look weird. With human faces and cats bodies. I had never seen the image of the sloth before. Very funny.
This. Is. Normal.
Sounds like an atom. A biblical atom
So kind of like how a humming bird moves it wings? That's crazy

@@douglasbubbletrousers4763 being an Ophanim sounds like fun
@@ara.may.sauvage If you're a monotheist, everything is not divine. God is God and everything else is creation.
para-normal if you will? very interesting

So they took the scientific approach:
"Poke it." 😅
Yep. Fish and bugs are cool and weird.
Bro a fish is nothing like this stuff lol
@@rileysowersray bigfin squid is a good example
A "chick" with 2 sets of "legs", get it "legs" 😉
I'm just effin around.
Yeah because things are all fine until they show up
guess it depends which side you're sitting on 😅
I will say, I think the way the Roman "ball in the sky" zips around is far more characteristic of ball lightning than of a meteor.
Definitely agreed.
It matches many reports of ball lightning I've read.
Ya plus it's pretty obvious this artist has a specific way of depicting comets and meteors which is completely different
@@NuancdNecromncr well to be fair, a comet burning in the atmosphere looks a lot different than a meteor thousands of miles away traveling through space.

@@TheMrCougarful What? It's pretty much accepted fact.

This world is rapidly passing away and I hope that you repent and take time to change before all out disaster occurs! If you are not a follower of Messiah I would highly recommend becoming one. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life - Revelation 3:20.
Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13 over the course of 1260+ years. Revelation 17 confirms that the beast is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years going back to Babylon and before, C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate once you start a relationship with God.
Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc. Have a blessed day!
The imagination of those who made these images is very unique and creative.
These are not scary, but confusing and weird, in a good way...
I agree, they aren´t scary, they just embody fear, if that makes sense
I think it's because we culturally aren't really afraid of these things. And the artwork in not in the style we would associate with horror today. Would the author's audience have viewed this as horrifying though?
@@ClayMurray8 Agreed and I fully believe they would
Same, I love creatures like that
I can easily understand your point of view if you detach reality from this.
Love your videos man, first time commenting, glad to be part of the squad !
Its a cherubim, i think.
I love biblically accurate angels SO much! Theyre soo interesting
Thank you for this, im learning so much!!
They also show in the Tarot major arcana, representing the 4 classical elements (earth, wind, water, fire)
Having seen that medieval artists uniformly draw cats with human faces, I am dubious as to the artistic accuracy.
Every time I watch a Hotchelaga video, I have to put aside a few minutes first just to get into the right state of mind. I need to pay proper attention, as to not miss anything.

What I find interesting about this book is that it reveals something interesting about sociology:
I think that people naturally drift towards thinking the end of the world is coming when there is a lot of social stress. This book was made in the turbulent time during the Reformation. Practically the same thing is happening today, with increased political and social strife the end of the world is basically a fact to some, especially younger people. I personally don't really subscribe to that view (Although I don't blame people for thinking it).

There's one picture making the rounds of a cloud that looks like the dragon head from the Mortal Kombat logo. believing that all this would really happen and they even brought "evidence" to show us how all that was true, "evidence" with natural disasters rivers turning red like wine and images of saints crying blood and stuff, it's bizarre to think they told This is for 11-15 year olds...

@@monus782 funny i had forgotten about it but actually in my school we also talked a lot about the apparitions of fatima and all its mysteries, and they really said that everything would start with her and her last secret that was not allowed by the vatican to be revealed... today i ñ I believe a lot in these things although I really like the subject lol but when I was a student it really scared me, who says things like these to children?
@@monus782 Oh yeah, I think one of the children became a nun (Lucia?) and wrote a secret letter predicting the apocalypse?
Putting the subjects aside for a moment, it is so beautifully painted!!
The city scapes, skies and silhouettes especially
A lot of those "hybrid monsters" could be explained by the observation of birth defects and genetic anomalies.
They usually can also be due to hearsay. A broken medieval telephone game no one knew they were playing.
yeah i've seen multiple pictures of chicks who look like that
This world is rapidly passing away and I hope that you repent and take time to change before all out disaster occurs! Belief in messiah alone is not enough to grant you salvation - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36) if you believed in Messiah you would be following His commands as best as you could.
Thank you so much for this video!First thing was searching this book on Google and love it 🖤
The divine monsters depicted are a literal representation of angels and their true forms as mentioned in the Bible and the apocrypha. The picture to the left of God is a cherubim and the wheel form is called a Throne. Hope that helps!
I got this book thinking what a great primary resource on history! This is even better because I can watch this and go through my book!!!!!!!! Thank you!
the one about human blood bubbling up from the surface of the earth reminds me of volcanos
A lot of these paintings are genuinely beautiful. I'm gonna turn some of them into wallpapers.
2:26 existence of wario confirmed in the book of miracles.
This is a really well put together video I could see this being on history channel in the 90s. Great job
Have you ever tought about doing a video on Hildegard von Bingen, her visions and the strange miniatures that she commissioned?
Apocalypse bingo 😂 your channel is so good. I really enjoy whenever a new video comes out

Well, the angel with the heads of a man, lion, eagle and bull, while often drawn together, are 4 seperate angels, which represent the 4 Apostles which wrote the 4 Apistles.
Is such a pleasure when there's a new video!
I think it would be interesting to have similar picture books published with this format. Series of weird images, minimum context, and whole lot of space for imagination. Some modern creepypasta Photoshoped images emphasizes too much on triggering fight or flight response and are not as fun to look at
The artwork is absolutely beautiful
The colors are so vibrant.
12:08 That is an exceptionally creepy photo to use of Lovecraft. Imagine this being someone’s introduction to Lovecraft and Lovecraftian horror and then finding out how he really was.
incredibly bigoted?
@@cart4092 Well, that isn’t what I meant, and that isn’t ironic to the photo of him used in the video.

I adore this kind of bizzaresci-fi artwork, partly because of its comic book crudity. Fantastic stuff, great channel.
5:16 This was most definitely not written down by Pliny the Elder in 76 BC, as Pliny was only born about a century later. So if you misspelled and meant "AD", he would have written about 150 years after the events described in the Book of Miracles.
excellent video as someone who grew up with this type of imagery
Brilliant production most often Illuminated Manuscripts were commissioned by ruling classes but this work really is in a category into and of itself , hundreds of years removed from traditional medieval bestiaries and at the very tale end of that manuscript age itself . So many questions like who was the artist who was it commissioned for ? This would be an IDEAL facsimile reproduction candidate it may be available for purchase I never knew the Book of Miracles even existed thanks for being a precise scholar ! 👑🌎🔥
Absolutely love these videos. Got the demon doodles video I’m my recommended a few days ago and absolutely loved it! Same for this one! Keep it up!

I absolutely love your videos, they showed me art and religion in the new light, also educated me in these things. Your videos are always entertaining to watch and are really exciting. Thank you 😁
