My understanding of the history is that Lebanon at that time would have been more of a region with several independent city-states than one unified kingdom. Also, the cedars being important is definitely a thing. Actually going to see the forests and seeing trees that are older than Christianity is kind of amazing honestly.

At what time, though? Nations of this era are heavily tied to the existence of a king, and each generation would conquer or suffer revolt as the dynasties strengthened and weakened. We can only approximate what each territory looked like in any given generation, and there's tens of generations covered in Biblical history
Graphically, you'd get very vague maps. Kush, Sheba would be just arbitrary blobs in Eastern Africa, since we don't know their extents. Scythia would be a fuzzy blob somewhere in Ukraine/south Russia (BTW where the war is taking place). Libya was basically a few coastal cities, with some fuzzy influence inland. The only ancient state in the Bible that marked borders, at least in some areas (limes), was the Roman Empire.

Tartessos was an iberian or celtiberian culture from south Spain that extracted gold, minerals and copper to sell it to the Phoenician colonies such as Cadiz, Malaga, Sexi, etc., aswell Greek cities. It's very mysterious because the Greek & Roman writers praised this culture because of its antiquity and wealth, although to this day it is very mysterious due to the scarcity of settlements. There are mentions of a certain king named Arganthonios and legend has it that they would be the descendants of Hercules, who after killing the giant Gerion in Spain, fathered the Tartessians.

Great content as always. I was hoping to hear more about Libya than just a very brief mention. Its biblical history is fascinating. One of the four Gospels, Mark, was Libyan. He wrote the first bible. The man who carried the cross with Christ was Simon of Cyrene, from Libya. I’m sure there are plenty more about Libya that I’d loved to hear about over here.
Where things often get more complicated is that the words Libya and Ethiopia were used for regions much larger than the current states that use their names. Libya, Ethiopia, and Guinea meant basically all of Africa at some point.
@@Yora21 I can understand that, but from what I reference, I mean things within the confines of modern-day Libya. For example, Mark and Simon existed within modern-day Libya. And I think that modern-day Libya is painfully underrated, in contrast to its rich past. That must change.

Great video, but I noticed one error. The regions you highlighted as Scythia were actually known as Dacia Magna (Romania), Thracia (Bulgaria), and later Moesia( bits of both). The Scythians at this time inhabited the Pontic Steppe in Ukraine, Southern Russia, the Caucasus, and part of Central Asia.
The Gauls that Maccabees references are the Galatians who moved into Asia Minor in the 2nd century BC. The letter to the Thessalonians is addressed to the church in Thessalonica in Macedon, not Thessaly. Scythia typically references Ukraine and Russia around the Black Sea. Sinim is translated as Cyene or modern day Aswan by most modern day scholars as that is what the Dead Sea Scrolls use for its translation.
The inclusion of France should not only be partial due to *Maccabees 2* being a deuterocanonical/apocryphus, but also because even now it's still debated if the Gauls mentioned are Cisalpine Gauls or Asia Minor Gauls (also known as Galatians). Both tribes were related to each other and both gave trouble to Rome until finally becoming subjects to it at about the same time (around 2 B.C.).
@@LangThoughts Leaving aside that he mentioned Maccabees as the only source, checking the book of Obadiah tells me that the word is "Zarephath", which is an alternate name of Sarepta, current Sarafand, which is located in Lebanon, actually.
The text in Maccabees refers to the Celts conquered by the romans at that time : either the people from Cisalpine Gaule (conquered in 191 BCE), located in what is now northern Italy, or the people from Galatia (pacified by the romans in 189 BCE), now in present-day Turkey. So, either way, France seems to be out of the picture. Some have proposed that the "Galatia" mentionned in 2 Timothy 4:10 (written ca. 80 AD) be the then fully-romanized Gaul (that is Northern Italy plus the current France, Belgium, Luxemburg, and a part of the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland). Some also speculated that the land of Elishah (Genesis 10:4 ; 1 Chronicles 1:7), renowned for its colorful fabric (Ezechiel 27:7), could be the land of the Elisyces, a tribe from the region of Narbonne, in southern France.
@@samhall5212 Were it the Cisalpine Gauls, France would be in the picture, given that Cisalpine Gauls' territory did span throughout over half of current France (and even just a bit of territory would qualify).
@@jorgelotr3752 I think you may be mistaking the Cisalpine Gaule ("up to the Alps") for the Transalpine Gaule ("beyond the Alps"), which spans all over southern France. Anyway, at the time the action of the Book of Maccabees takes place (ca. 160 BCE), the northernmost place conquered by the Romans was Modena in Northern Italy. It is only forty years later that the Romans set foot in what is now a French territory.

I saw that map and was curious about on what context the most far away countries were mentioned. Its hard to pinpoint that the lands that they referenced in the book really corresponded to the regions we know today, so there is also a great degree of uncertainty to some of these mentions
One correction, Thessalonians referred to the Christians of the city of Thessaloniki, not the region of Thessaly, which is south-west of Thessaloniki. A "Thessalonian" is someone from Thessaloniki. The denonym of Thessaly is "Thessalian".

oh btw the hebrew name for france, “Tsarfat”, was being used already in the book of kings (1), where it described a city in lebanon. In the book of Obadiah, the name “Tsarfat” has been used next to the name “Spharad” (which is another biblical name which is still in use describing Spain); and this connection probably caused people to start call france “Tsarpat”. Also, thanks to a certain translation of the book of Obadiah we call spain “Spharad” in hebrew. You can red more about it in wikipedia iyt is quite interesting ngl :DD
Scythia in those times would refer to the Pontic-Caspian steppe, which lies in modern-day Ukraine and Russia, and maybe Moldova. Romania and Bulgaria would still be included since I believe that Thrace is mentioned in the Bible, which is all the land south of the Danube.
I thought about this too. Perhaps they mean "Scythia minor" circa the Roman empire which would mean Dobruja (split between Bulgaria and Romania). The true extent of Scythia however would include by a technicality Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan, which would really fill up that map. I guess it depends how you understand "Scythia" in context.
All of them was serbs. I'm not saying that. That is what historical sources say. The real ones and not the Vatican falsified and modified ones. Of course they all want to be someone else. Maybe the Martians, I don't know, but they all know that they are originally from the Danube and that they used to be called Serbs. So you see how stupid this video is. Hi there, little question, I'm not sure if Malta wasn't mentioned ob purpose because, at the time, it was part of the Roman Empire. The small island was mentioned in Acts 28, when the ship St. Paul was held captive on was shipwrecked during a storm. It's said that all the seafarers survived and that St. Paul managed to convert the island's population to Christianity. It's a very well known story here in Malta and we even celebrate it as a public holiday on the 10th of February. The island was only mentioned by name once to my knowledge, but it would be cool to see a video about his time here in Malta. Cheers, and great work on the channel 💛
Im in love with your videos. There is something in your calm voice and your interesting christian content that makes your content highly enjoyable. Never stop doing what you're doing :)
Loved this video. Thank you. How about Malta, where St Paul was shipwrecked and survived the bite of a poisonous snake? If you include the writings of some Church Fathers who knew Paul and wrote after his death, there would be the places he visited like Cantium or Kent in Britannia (known in the NT as the 'western isles' now UK and Ireland). Also Helvetia (now Switzerland) is said to have been visited by Paul on his way back from Britannia.
I think Gaul's territory are not the European one but the one in Turkey/Asia Minor/Anatolia. For example, the city Galatia (or Gallia) in Paul's letters is the city of Gaul in Anatolia. So, I don't think Gual here refers to European Gaul, but Asian/Mediterreanian Gaul.
Just went to read the text itself and considering it's in the context of Romans conquering Gauls just the verse before talking about Romans conquering Spain, I'd argue it is still quite likely for it to reference the Western Gauls But then I'm French so I might be biased

Also, the cedars being important is definitely a thing. Actually going to see the forests and seeing trees that are older than Christianity is kind of amazing honestly.
Wouldn't Phoenicia be where modern Lebanon is located? And before Rome, didn't Phoenicia basically control the entire Mediterrean in terms of trade? Thus the merchandise people bought in the trade markets in those Biblical times were probably sourced by the Phoenicians
@@billsager5634 yes and no. whole Phoenicia and Lebanon do overlap, the border of Lebanon goes more inland whereas the Phoenicians hugged more closely to he coast.

I have a strange fascination with this topic. Especially how often Nubia, Kush, and Egypt show up in the Old Testament mostly but also the New Testament. Especially how Africa often gets overlooked in how much it plays a role in Biblical scripture.
Yet Ethiopia gets the same fame as Egypt. Most likely, the nexuses of culture and trade get more mention than transitory arteries in historical works. For example, I’m sure there were many Arabic tribes moving around during ancient times but none are really mentioned by name or traditional demarcation.

It would've been cool if the map showed territories that existed at the times.
That would be a great separate video.
Maybe color coded borders?
If these maps were made 35 years ago, most of Asia and much of Europe would have been red since Armenia was in the Soviet Union!

He probably made a confusion with Scythia Minor which would be Dobrogea in Romania and Bulgaria

Actually, France may be mentioned in Obadiah, as Zaphareth.
@@LangThoughts that’s incorrect too I’m afraid. Zaphareth was a Phoenician city between Sidon and Tyre. It’s near modern day Sarafand in Lebanon.
@@TheExiledTyrant Yeah, I said "may" for a reason. Some interpret Zaphareth as France.
@@TheExiledTyrant Also Zaphareth may have been a Phoenician city, but I misspelled it, the reference is to "Zarapheth"
Paul's letter is to Thessalonikians, not to Thessalians!
I came for the biblical geography, I stayed for the waiting of another video by him.
Actually, France may be mentioned in Obadiah (verse 20), as Zarapheth
It is only forty years later that the Romans set foot in what is now a French territory.

oh btw the hebrew name for france, “Tsarfat”, was being used already in the book of kings (1), where it described a city in lebanon. In the book of Obadiah, the name “Tsarfat” has been used next to the name “Spharad” (which is another biblical name which is still in use describing Spain); and this connection probably caused people to start call france “Tsarpat”.

Paul did not go to Britain or Spain. He wanted to go to Spain after Rome (read Acts) but was kept under house arrest in Rome until his death.
