Yes, Dire Straits over and over but I really enjoy Mark's later compositions. I would really like to see more reaction videos to his later works as well
I felt like a kid in a candy store watching your video to my fave artist of all time. Thank you, that was awesome. MK has written over 300 songs now, there's so much to discover. My fave solo songs are Punish The Monkey, You Don't Know You're Born, Kingdom Of Gold, So Far From The Clyde and Just A Boy Away From Home, just to name a few. Love your channel and even more when you react to MK. Cheers, all the best from Australia. 😊🎸🎸🎸
Phrasing and emphasis is everything to 'meaning', without it you just end up with a passage of words/notes. He is undoubtedly one of the true masters. This flows through into his lyrics and singing; they complete the package of unmistakable brilliance. Thanks Nick and Scott, this was very nice :)
Mark is also one of my favorite guitarists. I love his restraint, it allows so much beauty to his playing. Thanks @Scott for requesting this marathon, great selections!
A great reaction, thanks Nick. Now you're a Knopfler fan, can I point you towards a collaboration album Mark made with legendary musician Chet Atkins in 1990. The album's called 'Neck and Neck' and you really should check out the third track 'There'll Be Some Changes Made', it has both Chet and Mark ad-libbing to one another as they take turns playing their guitars and singing the song. It's a true delight.
I remember seeing the Knotting Hillbillies live on SNL when this originally aired. I was already a Dire Straits and Mark knopfler fan, but I didn't know who this musical guest was and I was floored when i recognized Mark up there. I also remember mark being there a couple years earlier playing with Randy Newman on SNL.
Nobody takes advantage of the interstices between refrains as much as Knopfler. He builds so much anticipation and drama by not being fearful in his song writing by SILENCE. It's a wonderful ally if used correctly. It doesn't hurt that he is a master at lyrical hooks.
Having not heard this track before, I recognised the other singer as James Taylor straight off. I know Knopfler has worked with JT live, so that convinced me further... Also worth checking out Knopfler's duet album with Emmylou Harris, 'All The Roadrunning' (2006). Not much lead guitar work on that one, but great vocal harmonies and songwriting.
After being a long time fan of Dire Straits, this was a real pleasure to listen to. He did the theme tune for the movie, Local Hero (1983), that was set in Scotland.
The "On Every Street" album is criminally underrated. Even though it has so many amazing songs on it. By the way, the drummer on most of the album was the legendary Jeff Porcaro.
What a great Thanksgiving treat to get the great Mark Knopfler and a NicknLex reaction. I had a really hard time picking out the songs for this one. There could be numerous variations to this marathon and it would still be incomplete. I debated including Mark’s work with the great Chet Atkins and Emmylou Harris as well but went with the James Taylor collaboration of Sailing to Philadelphia. Alas you can’t do it all. There will need to be a Mark The Mighty 2nd reaction as well. Thanks Nick fade to black was a perfect outro. Im so happy to get to watch you hear more Mark Knopfler. I’m sure there will be many great suggestions for more songs from the Mighty Mark. I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving.
Scott, I was late getting to this but these were wonderful choices. On Every Street has always been one of my favorites. Reminds me of Ennio Morricone’s most emotional work. Wonderful stuff!
Both Mark's careers have a different sound, Dire Straits was rock, rock/ pop, and his solo career is more folk, folk rock ,but both share some common things, and they are brilliant musicianship, song write and story telling with Mark's emotional singing style. I have loved his music all my life ( in my 60s ), and long may he continue to make us all so happy.
This was fantastic Scott. Such a great arranger and singer/songwriter. Love him änd Bruce Cockburn in this style. Favorite Knopfler albums are still the self titled one and Love Over Gold. Love Telegraph Road on Love Over Gold. Was not familiar with last 2 cuts but they were awsome. Great marathon from start to finish. Very nostolgic for the 90's and the 80's, especially compared to now.
Sailing to Philadelphia is one of my favorites!! It features James Taylor, love this song. The whole album is great as well. Happy Thanksgiving to you and Lex from sleepy little Plymouth Ca.
Calling Elvis, Heavy Fuel and On Every Street were hits from this album but ive known you long enough now Nick, 'You And Your Friend' is a guitar players epic!
If he's going to react to that one, it's absolutely got to be the live "on the night" version, otherwise he's cheating himself out of something magical. As superb as the original recording is, that live version is simply otherworldly. That Pensa is just screaming. Dire Straits are always best listened to live.
I am so glad you did Beryl I personally think it was so his best stuff since Dire straights. If you haven’t heard anything from all the road running with Emmy Lou Harris you should definitely check it out. This is us would be a great place to start. I really enjoyed everything you shared. Rob in Thornton

As brilliant as Mark is on the guitar, I think he's even more brilliant as an arranger. So tasteful and elegant, and always just what is needed for the song, and no more. PS Mark's outstanding collection of guitars is being auctioned off by Christie's auction house in January. There's a video on the Christie's UA-cam page where Mark explains the history of some of the guitars in the sale. A portion of the proceeds is going to charity.
Hey Nick finally got a chance to listen and watch away from the holiday distractions. I am delighted you enjoyed it 🤔 I knew you would it was an easy bet. All your insights and observations are appreciated, glad you picked up his Scottish sound on Beryl. I think you would call it Jigs and Reels. His influences are wide and his delivery is exceptional and always tasteful. I loved seeing your face light up when you recognized James Taylor’s distinct vocals. Check out the Notting Hillbillies when you can. As always thanks for the great Reaction. .
Not lot of people know that Mark was born in Scotland and didn’t move to Newcastle until he was eight years old. He still does a very good Glasgow accent.
The Hillbillies put out one album "Missing.....presumed having a good time" and it is a gem. Props to Brendan Croker, lead vocal and RIP. Also Fade to Black was an excellent choice.
Nick you really should listen to Bob Dylan Infidels Co produced and featuring Mark Knopler.stand out track for me are "i and i""Sweetheart like you" but the whole album is good. Also featuring Mick Taylor ex Stones.
Nick, if you haven't already, check out John Anderson (country singer) covering Mark's 1991 song "When It Comes To You"... with Mark playing guitar. It's so much better than the Dire Straights version. John's singing and Mark's guitar playing is such a perfectly matched duo. Edit: Here is a video with a little history of the duo along with the song... ua-cam.com/video/N-Lz-zh524Q/v-deo.htmlsi=sMOImbFLWlsZ0HZj
Sailing To Philadelphia is literally one of the most beautiful songs ever made!
You have great taste. Yes, it is superb.
especially the live versions for me at least
Congratulations on being the first person I’ve seen on UA-cam reacting to Mark’s solo material.
Yes, Dire Straits over and over but I really enjoy Mark's later compositions. I would really like to see more reaction videos to his later works as well

I second this recommendation. And Chet Atkins is well worth checking out on his own!
Yes sir!
you are so right about marks playing and song writing, truly original and unique, brilliant and underapreciated
Wow wow wow two fantastic artists for the price of one on individual albums by both men…..just superb they way music should be played and sung…wow
Scott, great job. 👏🏼 Wtg, Nicky. 😊💕
Check out, What It Is, Mark Knopfler after Dire Straits. Good live versions on UA-cam.

Great selection of Knopfler tracks, Fade To Black is wonderfully atmospheric, I hope you do another marathon.

IMHO Sailing to Philadelphia is a masterpiece of a track.
One of my favs from Knopfler.
While you are checking out solo work, also check out "Neck n' Neck" with Chet Atkins.

One word GENIUS.
Can we just talk about that line a 3 chord symphony crashes into space and the moon is hanging upside down 😮🥺😳
This song is about the Mason and Dixon and how they drew the Mason Dixon line.

Thanks it was really hard to pick 5 songs there is so much good stuff.
Glad you finally landed on Mark Knopfler…just like when you landed on Metheny…the genius of Mark…like Pat is “intonation”.
'Baloney Again' from the Sailing to Philadelphia album is about as near to perfect as it gets.
I'm a big fan of Knopfler's Golden Heart album. The song "Golden Heart" song is one you should check out.
I nearly took the song Rudiger in the. Marathon there will have to be another Mighty Mark Marathon number two.
Sailing to Philadelphia is one of my favorites!! It features James Taylor, love this song. The whole album is great as well. Happy Thanksgiving to you and Lex from sleepy little Plymouth Ca.
James Taylor is an impeccable guitarist also.
Jeff Porcaro drums in On Every Street
Oh yeah sure is! Would have loved to see some videos from the recording sessions!
Scott- thanks! I love this guy and his band for 46 yrs - also I love Roller Girl
You must listen to "You And Your Friend"!
There is some wonderful interviews with Mark, One I like is: Mark Knopfler - Romeo and Juliet (Radio 2 Piano Room)
Sailing to Philadelphia -
Duet with James Taylor
The best song from the " On Every Street " album is " Planet Of New Orleans ", an excellent jazz/blues number
My favorite as well.
Mine too.
I think each one is the best.
Another excellent video.
I appreciate that

I listen to that album when driving great for a sing along.
Highly underrated? Most certainly not. Lol. He's rated exactly where he should be. Top tier
Because he prefers to keep a low profile out of the limelight, He gets less publicity than others.
Thanks @Scott A. 👍
Thanks
Trying to keep up with the great BMac 😊. What a great channel this is.
Interested in your reaction to "You and Your Friend" from the On Every Street album. The conversing guitars....
What´s not to love about that glassy sound of single coils on an S-type guitar😊
Don't worry Nick: I am a Steely Dan fan too!
Best Album? "Alchemy" live performance video.
Alchemy is soooo good 😊
That's James Taylor I believe 😊
Nick you really should listen to Bob Dylan Infidels Co produced and featuring Mark Knopler.stand out track for me are "i and i""Sweetheart like you" but the whole album is good. Also featuring Mick Taylor ex Stones.

Marks tone almost hurts. Along with his story telling I'm stopped in my tracks when he comes on
Communique' is pronounced comyoonikay'😊
You left out his 2 best songs. Money for Nothing and Sultans of Swing.
Great songs he has reacted to one and knows the other one.
