I, too, really miss the online multiplayer of past games. In world, no one really cares about or hangs with other hunters, nobody is in the lobby, and everyone just does SOS flares. I miss just hopping into a lobby and being like, "well this is my hunter family for the next couple of hours". I made so many friends that way.

With the exception of KT runs I've yet to go on consecutive quests with a team of players, everyone is one-and-done. In the classic games I'd play hours with the same team, each of us rotating quests, chatting and having fun. It's strange that MHW is the most connected game in the franchise yet the least personable.

I really don't like how everyone always disbands. Even when playing with friends they automatically put the disband option and I have to tell them to stay in order to continue.
I get that people may want to go back for the farm or maybe to craft something but every single hunt people just disband. Very rarely 1 or 2 randoms will stick around.

If I didn’t watch him, I would eventually get it but not without spending a million zenny. This dude was my hero back then. Would never be able to hangout with some people across the world (yes they were higher than me when I joined em. They were G2 already when I joined they’re party) if it wasn’t for gaijinhunter. Like seriously. I was able to catch up to em in 1 week time. I sometimes come back to mh4u for one quick hunt before my 3ds just suddenly shuts down. (Was 13 back then and never gave a fu~ about my gadgets, thus the very short lifespan of my 3ds) mhw is so different from the classic. No one gives a fu~ about parties. They’ll just come for a quick hunt and then leave. Was disappointed by this, so I had to solo my way to the end.

    • @FakeHeroFang
      @FakeHeroFang 5 років тому +1

Element is fine, it just works way better for some weapons/monsters than others because of how damage is calculated. It kinda always has been that way too. I'd kinda agree with status, it sucks apart from monsters super weak to it, which are usually the smaller/easier hunts anyways. Especially poison, it's god awful in World and doesn't even have the Kushala niche anymore. It wasn't even worth building a crit status set until AT Zorah released unless you used blast because it's stuck on his set, which wasn't really that great to begin with. Pink rath's set bonus is also pretty weak. With the way things are going (ancient leshen, tempered behemoth) I doubt it'll get any better in general, sadly.

    • @SH1NK1R01
      @SH1NK1R01 5 років тому +4

Dave Chrome well actually non element boost doesn’t really cause a problem so much as it avoids one. The only weapons that make use of it are the weapon types that are the worst for elements. An elemental great sword will literally never be stronger than an elemental bow. The mh games have always been this way. The lack of status builds has more to do with community perception than actual viability. Aside from blast and poison para and sleep are incredibly strong but ask you to lose personal dps in exchange for guaranteed party damage. Poison could easily be fixed by letting it build up the next proc while the current one is active to allow for chain procs. It does good damage otherwise averaging about 10 or more ticks of 20 for free regardless of monster movement. Element less will never go away and can’t be fixed because it’s the only think keeping the slow weapons viable now that the fast weapons are more accessible and powerful than ever. Blast should be given its old part break properties back and call it a day. Build diversity in this game has actually been just as great if not greater than ever before. But with increased visibility and popularity comes a desire to be more effective and efficient than the masses that surround you. If classic mh possessed or obtains the same mass appeal the result will be the same. People will run to the highest numbers and ignore all else. If you want a status build then run it. If you want an element build make one. The random bullshit we have always cooked up has never been the best and we all know it. So why does it matter that someone did the math and told us that status builds aren’t as good?

Critique is only bad if you don't explain the reasons why, or provide answers for what you would change. My biggest criticisms of world are the multiplayer balance, decoration farming, and event structure. There's a few other things, like investigations feeling like a needlesly bloated system, the lobby feeling desolate without the gathering hall like it used to work, and gear designs being really uninspired. I will never forget my greatest monster hunter moment! It was a while back, in Mh4u. I believe it was the quest to get the hero’s sword, but I know it was against the Akantor.
I was severely underprepared to fight this thing, to say the least. After it unleashed several cans of whoop ass on me, I learned that preparation was key. I had to take the time to learn the layout of its arena-thing, make a weapon it was weak to (I think it was a gore Magala hammer) and craft armor out of the azure Rathalos. I went back in, ready for the fight.
After a long and hard battle, I was losing on all fronts. My cats were dead, I was running out of time, and I was out of healing items. A few minutes later, I was screwed. I had the tiniest sliver of health left, I was on fire, I had around 6 seconds left (not exaggerating) on the clock, and the damned Akantor was charging at me. I remember actually wondering what would kill me first. In an instant, the clock was down to two seconds (I should mention I opened quest info a lot) the fire had taken just about the last bit of green on my health bar, and the Akantor was right on top of me, raising his claw. As one last **** you, I swung my hammer before he or the fire claimed my life.
    Quest complete.
Needless to say, that was my best monster hunter moment before or since. If I had a highlight reel, that would be at the top

The goofy feeling and the cheerful sense incorporated in the game. So that's what I'm feeling lost in MHW.
That feeling when you're in town, it calms you down cause you see NPCs saying " Hi " and the colorful background that eases the strain on your eyes. All of those but when you start to hunt again, everything is normal from the start but with the odd feeling of mixed excitement and horror while all of your teammates are coming over to the monster's area. Some teammates even lightens up the mood by sending funny preset chats and when you get to the area you suddenly feel the " Game On " attitude kicking in. You forget all the light heartedness feeling earlier and you get to focus on the hunt like fighting a boss monster.

Say what you will about the weapon designs, but they certainly didn’t skimp out on the armours. I think it’s the same feeling people tend to get with any older style games. There’s something satisfying about simplicity that most modern games forego for what you correctly point out as “initial awe”. Acclimating to the detail in a game means the more time spent in the setting makes it a backdrop. I see the same kind of stuff with say the difference between Mario 64 versus Mario Odyssey. Both great games, but I still prefer 64 for some reason. That being said, I’m not really sure I understand some of the differences you pointed out. Specifically the armor and item significance. I like you take though.

My biggest complaint regarding that is Coral Highlands - you have 4 local monsters (Tzitzi, Paolumu, Legiana, Kirin; all of them exclusively in the Highlands) and 2 extras (Odo, Pink Rath) and you fight all of them in basically 2 to 4 out of 15 areas and it's the same 2 to 4 areas for all of the 6 monsters. I don't even recognize any of the other areas because I never see them even though there are some damn beautiful places. I would love to fight in this large cave with the many mining spots or the deeper coral-jungle like area that you sometimes spawn in in high rank next to a dung spot and some angler fish endemic life.

Agreed. I'm new to the series and love World, and honestly can't really work my way into enjoying the older games quite as much (the vibrancy of World's area design helps it a lot in my eyes), but the monster variety is *highly* lacking in World. I really do appreciate when I find monsters behaving and interacting in new ways, but these interactions are too few and often too simple to carry the game despite its low monster count. That and the rather generic weapon models are what I'd want to see changed.

I started on PSP and PSP had no online function whatsoever. So unless you ran into the only other 2.5 people in the west who owned a PSP and this obscure japanese game, you had to play solo.
Same for the 3DS. Ultimate 3 didn't have online and when Ultimate 4 came out with online, the nintendo netcode was so unbelievably bad and shitty, I just played solo after all the 20-minute-hunts failing because of connection errors. Technical issues aside, I also didn't like the players I encountered very much. When I went online to grab some low-rank materials while wanting to do some jolly coop, everytime so fuck in G-rank armor would join in and kill the thing in one-hit. That wasn't fun, it fucking sucks.
I never talked to anyone in any gathering hall ever and Monster Hunter World is the first game I ever played with anyone else over the internet, so I cannot even comprehend what you people are talking about. I never felt any "hunter family" or "clan hunt honors" because it flat out never existed for me.

Every single thing you said is exactly why I still haven't touched World/Iceborne yet (besides the fact that I don't have a PS4 and that I prefer to play games handheld).
When World first released, I kept hearing complaints from old timers saying "This game is too easy!", and that was a BAD sign, because you are supposed to SUFFER in a Monster Hunter game! No flexing pose? Geez, come on!
One of my Twitter friends started playing World recently (her first ever Monster Hunter experience), so at first I was rubbing my hands thinking "Ohhh, let's see you struggle. The beautiful, beautiful struggling. Harr harr harr", but then a few days later she's breezing through it. WTF??????
When Iceborne was announced, I was very excited about it because now the game is gonna get a lot harder, but once released, I hear people complaining again: "The fucking clutch claaaaawwww arrrggghhh!", so I Googled what the heck this clutch claw thingumajig was, and daaaayyuuuuummm, that's an asspull. I just HATE it when games force you to do stuff. I'm a super-casual player. Even if I suck, I just do things MY WAY to have fun. Isn't that the whole point of a game? But no, the clutch claw system strips you of your freedom to choose how to play - the freedom to have fun YOUR WAY. And that genuinely pissed me off.
And also my second biggest gripe with World/Iceborne: I. PREFER. MY. MONSTER. HUNTER. GAMES. SILLY. AND. STUPID. Why the heck am I not allowed to go into battle wielding a shark or a slice of pizza?????? WHRE. THE. HECK. IS. THE. FLEX????????? UGH. Collecting ridiculous-looking weapons and aromour is so much fun! It was a major MAJOR dissappointment when people playing World were complaining about boring looking weapons. Like nooooooo.
Now that Rise has been announced, I doubt that I'll play World/Iceborne. From the previews it seems to be an excellent mix of both the old world style and World style. I am SO excited about it. (:

I couldn't agree more in the point of "sillyness and goofyness". That must be no doubt the one thing that makes me love these series. You have these awesome monsters that have so many concepts beautifully mixed into one, and describing them to other people that don't know MH is super fun (Hey, this monster is called Bazelgeuse and it's a pinecone that throws bombs and its roar sounds like sirens, and sometimes we call him B-52). It's SILLY and I LOVE it, because whenever you go one on one with them, you still have a challenge and have fun because you're fighting the silly concept.
Classic MH had armors that were hilarious. Were all of them beneficial? Not at all. But wearing them is what makes you have fun and challenge yourself to have a fork and a knife against the T-Rex that looks like a pickle and could eat its own tail...
I agree on you with that, and, if I really, REALLY would like something from this is a game that combines into perfect harmony classic and modern MH on the SWITCH. I feel like Generations Ultimate is still a 3DS experience, just upscaled a bit. But if a new Switch game were made, having the vast majority of QoL improvements there would be a dream game for me.
Like, I want a Generations Ultimate where the Weapons have the World movesets, ABOVE ALL THINGS, maybe the Styles could be back, gathering made like in world, no camps...
You know, a Generations Ultimate that also feels like World.
THAT is an instant buy, because it is a portable/console experience while modern can remain the console-only experience, and we have the best of both worlds.

As someone who started with Tri, I kind of like timed events because it guarantees that loads of different people are going to be looking for those events. As long as they're in a predictable pattern so you can schedule around them, it doesn't seem that big a deal to me. It was always radical to see the sandstorm moving in to Loc Lac and knowing Jhen Mohran was around, for example. It added that sense of a living world without completely removing the quality of having proper team duels with a boss.

I agree in a lot of ways, but I personally prefer world.
I of course agree with the weapon designs, the items in camps and somewhat with the multiplayer. I do agree that world is lacking the more personal feeling, I do not want to spend an eternity looking for a lobby or waiting for people to join mine ever again.
I do also think that classic monster hunter has a certain charm and feeling to a hunt that world can't completely replicate.
but, I do prefer the maps of world. I feel like they have more purpose in gameplay and are less boring to walk through. I also feel like I can make strategies based on where I am in world more often. if I'm in a zone with healing things, I can use those in an emergency, or if there's somewhere with a kickoff point, I can use that. I also feel like this happens a lot more with monsters too. although monsters in older games had the occasional zone specific attack, or zone specific behavior, this was never used much. it's much more touched upon in world with. there are also a few more hazards to look out for that were slightly more uncommon in previous games.
I also prefer the armor in monster hunter world.
you may feel more motivation to make new sets in classic monster hunter, I feel more motivation to make new sets in world. here's why.
making your own mixed sets is much more fun and much easier in world than the old games. in general, you can just experiment much more with armor. these things is why I return to world more than generations ultimate. I love making multiple sets in world, some of my own, some from other people, some based on other sets but with my own personal touch. I've got a set for many weapons in world, even ones that I don't use, because it's just fun to come up with something that would mix with my playstyle.
doing this is very difficult in classic monster hunter, wich is why I usually make a general set that works for all of my weapons. I don't want to make new sets because coming up with your own isn't fun, and when I'm done making it, I don't see a reason to make another, unlike world.
but luckily, it does seem that the portable team is going to continue making games too, so I think it's likely that we're going to see the main team working on more world style games while the portable team will probably make more classic style games, so there will probably be something for everyone.

    • @Ergeniz
      @Ergeniz 5 років тому +13

      I agree with you.
I feel as if nostalgia is coloring gaijin's opinion a bit more than he might like to admit.
There a lot of objectively terrible things about 'classic monster hunter' like the lobby system; having to wait for a room to help fight the monster you want wasn't a lot of fun and was just plain impractical for many western player. People rag on tempered as lazy artificial difficulty (and they are correct) but apex was even worse. A lot of the weapon mechanics were even less interesting in older games. Ironically, world takes several implements from the styles in Generations and mixes them into the weapons such as the air spinning hammer. They should continue on that front and re-introduce oils for sword and shield (balance it obviously) and take the ability to encore on the move for Hunting Horn from Monster Hunter Online. Generations also goes way overboard with the 'grinding' aspect of MH. The deviant system is absolutely horrid and nonsensical. The lvl. 140 stuff was just pointless to me. Having multiple monsters in an arena is stupid as they never interact. So the game was one-dimensional in regards to their behavior.
I don't see why going back to hunting monsters as just arena bosses would be a good thing. I personally hated how most monsters were so one-dimensional and despite being in the same area would completely ignore each other and any damage that happened to be to one another was accidental and minor. Somehow we have even monsters that are predator and prey of another only having tunnel vision for me, the player. It was something that always bothered me and I'm glad World made monster interactions a thing. I also agree I prefer weapon skills in World. Negative skills was always incredibly stupid in older games and despite what gaijin says, effective armor selection was ultimately decreased despite there being far more monsters. World's armors are less interesting to look at, true but there are more viable parts to mix and match here. Many of my current sets barely use any parts from Drachen if you can believe it (will share if anyone is interested).
I do prefer the brighter and more colorful design of older games. World environments are mechanically sound but not visually appealing. So I do agree with Gaijin we need a return to that. Or take notes from Monster Hunter Online, which has more serious tone in line with world but nonetheless more interesting. Same with armor and weapons. I like how they are handled in game but they are so disappointing to look at. And for fuck's sake less us make our own layered armor. No more of this having to get tickets as a hidden way of trickling out content to players as an method of artificial longevity. The same applies to event quests. The devs seem to recognize the endgame for world is rather weak and so they did this as way of making the game seem more active than it is. Nowadays I admit I only hop on world to the limited bounty each week and that is it.

    • @Pascll

@@Ergeniz I personally don't mind the de-saturated colour palet that much, but if it bothers many players, it should be changed.
I personally think the endgame of world is good in what you do, but there aren't enough endgame monsters. I personally disliked the endgame of generations because nothing kept you coming back, but world having decorations and augmentations kept me coming back for a while until I got the ones I wanted.

    • @Ergeniz
      @Ergeniz 5 років тому +1

@@Pascll Tempered monsters don't bother me. While their difficulty is artificial in the sense its just bloated attack power (or in the case of arch tempered, bloated HP, attack and few new moves), its something I don't mind because tempered investigations have an point to them in that you get streamstones, decos as opposed to being focused on parts. I found frenzied and hyper monsters to just be aggravating for no good reason.
An more realistic colored pallete is fine but World seems drab in its execution most of the time. The only area that opened my eyes a bit was the lava caverns in elder's recess. As I mentioned before, Monster Hunter Online does the idea better. Here are some of the areas; contrast them with Monster Hunter World:
      monsterhunter.fandom.com/wiki/Dawnwind_Valley
      monsterhunter.fandom.com/wiki/Hermit_Forest
      monsterhunter.fandom.com/wiki/Thunderous_Sands
      monsterhunter.fandom.com/wiki/Esther_Lake
      monsterhunter.fandom.com/wiki/Ghost_Rune_Volcanoes
      monsterhunter.fandom.com/wiki/Arena_(MHO)
When I say the endgame is weak in MHW, I mean not from lack of a defined goal. Even now, I could use several streamstones and I want to have all my various sets completely augmented for maximum defense...but there is no NEED to do so now that I have taken down everything in the current game. And what this means is that MHW lacks one thing the older games have and could easily deliver: more monsters. I am tired of farming the same elder dragons over and over for streamstones. Several of them like Lunastra are not even enjoyable. This is not inherently world's 'fault', as like every vanilla release it lacks monsters and the bells/whistles the expansions tend to bring. So I'm not a detractor, but at the same time I wish they would have waited a bit longer until they did things like fixed the skeleton for amphibians and had mammal monsters. There are waaaay too many wyverns and reptilian monsters in world. Way too many. It leaves you with the impression of 'sameness', and it was something that took away when I first started the game.

      Starting from 4th Gen, the series undeniably have mistakes for each game;
4U: Guild Quests, Apex Monsters, Divine Armor Spheres
Gen/GenU: Poor difficulty balance, no Subspecies, Hyper Monsters, Deviants Quest system
World: Poor difficulty balance, poor weapons design, Arch-Tempered Elder Dragons, a nerf or outright ruin certain returning monsters, poorly designed gimmicky collaboration monsters, multiplayer makes everything harder, not easier, timed Event Quests, Stuns, Temors, Roars, and Windpress made broken. Then again, some of these mistakes could be fixed by a few re-adjustments.

in generations ultimate, you don't have a reason to return after you've killed everything, there's nothing more to do other then hunting stuff for fun or making armor sets, but I personally need a reason to do things in games, even if that reason is just to do it for the first time.

@@flisboac I think he means guild quests. You could obtain these guild quests by going on "expeditions" which are basically quests with no time and carting limit, where you could get resources and hunt. There was a ( high ) chance of getting a guild quests after taking down a monster. Guild Quests were random, as in you could kill a Rajang in the expedition and get a Velocidrome guild quest. And you could complete them in multiplayer
Guild quest had a maximum level of 140, and the level went up after every completion of the quest. If you got a Guild Quest from a G Rank expedition ( which is the hardest rank, I heard a rank as hard as G-Rank will come in the Iceborne expansion of MHW ) it would already be high level and it'd level up faster.
By completing Guild Quests ( they were HARD AS FUCK, level 140 GQ monsters could one/two-shot you with the best armor and bonuses in the game, and they were hella fast and unpredictable ) you could get relics ( very strong and special weapons and armors, with extra bonuses ), and charms ( extra bonuses that could help you get insane set bonuses ).
So basically you did expeditions to get Guild Quests ( you could share guild quests with others btw, so people could do them with their friends ), to hunt monsters at insane difficulties, to get insane weapons and charms. A lot of RNG was involved.

In world i don't get this feeling amymore. I have only one set for every weapon at best and i only play like 5 weapons where as in the classic games i played pretty much every one.
I also caught my self recently wishing to get that family feeling back when going on multiple hunts in the classic games with three other people, rotating the quest picks or just farming one monster over and over again.
Literally everytime i come back to this video i find something new that i agree with. Thanks Gaijin for this amazing video

I come back to this video constantly because, as happy as I am that we have new hunters and the series being as popular as it's ever been we lost that special spark that a lot of my new hunting friends don't understand and whenever I voice my opinion about how I feel (being an OG hunter, starting from MH4) I'm just called a boomer and a hater for the new stuff. So when I show them this at least they start to get it a bit.

I do miss how when you loaded in on mh3 you decided on solo or online, then joined a server choosing lobby of 3 others. My greatest moments of the monster hunter was laughing with random people and making friends that way. The game felt completely different online. Monsters felt tougher compared to solo, typing via keyboard was easier, and everything felt easier to join and feel like part of the team :)

I agree with pretty much all these except for the "hunt vs boss" part, from the very beginning when I was playing mhfu, I had always wished there was more emphasis on the hunting aspect, as well as seamless, living, breathing environments and after playing and finishing mhgu, I found that even though it was great reliving old style mh, I realised that the map loading screens and open arena type areas made the experience less exciting and immersive.

The thing is that then "hunting" you're thinking of doesn't really fit the monster hunter world. We're basically living weapons of mass destruction fighting against apex predators - the extent of our hunting is tracking and using items specifically to counter a monster. You can have the seamless living breathing world you want in traditional MH games, they're not mutually exclusive, but the problem is that Capcom catered to casuals when switching to it because they felt bad for people who camped at the edge of the maps and changed maps whenever the monster got near which fundamentally makes the game easier because they did nothing to counter-balance it.
I just want traditional monster hunter with world's graphics and no-loading times. Fuck unskippable cutscenes and voice acting - waste of fucking time for the MH series that only serves to make the low amount of content look nicer. I feel like the only thing world has over traditional MH is the graphics and no-loading times. Everything else is just worse.

Seamless environments are the best move MH could have made, imo. I tried playing Generations Ultimate, and the wide empty "rooms" with loading screens every 30ft or so were a massive turn-off for me. Monster interactions are also great and make the world feel alive. If it weren't for the changes in MHW, I probably never would have gotten into the series.

@@Mirie-Maribael I agree, though scoutflies were kind of necessary since the old paintball system would not work particularly well with the environment design of _World._ Some of the areas are more straight forward in layout, but there's a significant increase in map complexity. Perhaps a merging of the two ideas, with scoutflies only tracking targets that had been marked.

interesting perspective, gonna be honest though I love the living breathing environments filled with details and life. I personally can't go back from that, I like that the monster feels like it has a reason to be there.

The thing is... they don't have to be mutually exclusive.
Areas and maps can still be designed with utility in mind.
I mean... arguably, it's what Tri had.
That first encounter with Lagiacrus? That felt believable. The flooded forest? That felt real. Ceadeus' map? Again. Believable.
But all of these maps? They were still... "gamey". They still felt like they were designed for you to fight something in them.
In world? Coral highlands has to be my favorite map aesthetically, but if it's not in the "elder dragon" areas that Namielle spawns in, it's freaking terrible.
Hallways, random cliffs, areas literally the size of a monster...
You can have good aesthetics... but still have good gameplay.
I hate almost every map in world.
      Ancient forest? Hate it.
Coral highlands? Hate most of it.
Wildspire? It's "ok", but have you ever tried to do a quest with both normal and black diablos before? One'll be trying to sleep, then the other just wakes it up immediately, because they're practically in the same spot. And good lord have I never hated fighting Rathian as much as I hate fighting it there.
Elder's recess: Half of it's good, half of it's terrible. This would probably be the closest thing to tri's design elements in the base game. But... the terrible's still there. For no real reason.
The lava areas. I can't count the number of times I've been carted by a monster because I accidentally jumped in the middle of a laser beam or explosion or fireball instead of running out of it/diving/healing myself. And there's absolutely no reason for those areas to be designed that badly.
      Hoarfrost.
This... is much, much, much closer to Tri's design.
      And it works.
If Tri had been a PS4 game instead of a Wii game, Hoarfrost is probably what most of it's maps would actually look like.
Every area is actually fun to play in. They're open, they're large, they're mostly flat, and the few that aren't are still designed well, as they're dens or specific to flying monsters. (legiana)
Imagine how much less annoying Kushala would've been in the base game if Ancient forest had been more like Hoarfrost.
The issue with world's maps honestly isn't the fact there's so much detail... it's the fact that the detail came before gameplay.
Very minor adjustments to half the areas would've fixed almost all design issues.
Saturation/contrast adjustments would've fixed the issues of things like mining points not standing out.
There's no reason we can't have maps that "make sense", but also still have them actually designed really well for gameplay.
      Again: Tri did that.
Tri was just much more primitive, because it was a Wii game.
But almost every monster in Tri... felt like it truly belonged there.
Without sacrificing gameplay to do it.

@@AtomicArtumasfinding this 3 years late, but you just summed up my opinion that I didn't know I had, so elegantly and clearly. Thank you for writing this all out 3 years ago lmao
Here's hoping Wilds can keep the detail that World brought, while also bringing the combat with the monster more to the forefront of map design. I feel Rise did this better than world, but everyone says those maps are not detailed enough. But take all the Rise maps, and slap all of the gameplay elements of World and people would be all over them.
