Well for one thing it ISN'T the 'lead' instrument. They play a big part later in the song, that's true. But there were popular songs before it with stand out drum parts. Off the top of my head - Wipeout by The Surfaris.

Song is really about knowing that a "blow up is about to happen, before it happens". Written and recorded during a rough divorce process, Phil wrote the song basically to express his frustration of knowing that almost every conversation was going to be a fight. So much so that he would tell friends about it happening DAYS before it actually happened. So the song was about knowing it was about to go off, and figuring "why hold back, just unload all of it".
The "counter-point" to this song is "Don't Care Anymore"... one of the best Collins song and almost an instant "anthem" for people who just don't want to put up with BS anymore.
Really sad knowing that his neck injury prevented him from making more music over the years. He was one of the most admired drummers of his time, and people loved his writing and vocals. But, with the body of work he left behind, there is absolutely no one who can deny his raw talent on the drums and on the mic.

In his book he said he wanted this as his entrance for his fight against Trevor Berbick, but they picked another song which he cant remember because he was so busy playing "In the Air Tonight" in his mind as he walked towards the ring. He then won and became the youngest heavyweight champ.

The song, according to Collins, were feelings that rose up from a pretty messy divorce he was going through. All the conspiracy theories that Americans have come up with over the years are completely false. The part about drowning is no different than any expression any one of us would use…”if you were drowning I wouldn’t lend a hand!” Sounds pretty serious.

When I was growing up, this song was a prerequisite song for EVERY kid who wanted to be a drummer to learn how to play, heh. This is one of the first songs I learned.
The song was written when he was going through a divorce. He was in a very dark place when he wrote it.
Btw...there are two drummers. If you know what you're listening for, you can tell pretty quickly. Phil plays as he sings on alot of songs, but not all of them. On this one both he and Luis Conte (a black drummer who has played the most with him) are playing.

Freddie Mercury, was one ( in my opinion, the very best) front man of all time. An interviewer once asked him what instrument he played, his answer, the audience, darling. And he did too, he had over 100,000 non English speaking people, singing every word with him, while he conducted. Queen were responsible for so many first’s, if you have half an hour to spare, watch their performance at the Live aid concert, voted by many musicians as the best performance ever!

The most iconic drum solo ever. You should react to the live version. It is just amazing how good Phil Collins is live along with that awesome drum solo he performs himself. He did write the song about a woman. His wife left him as he was just returning from a tour in Japan with his band at the time Genesis After their divorce he said he was haunted by his emotions afterwards and wrote the song.

So THANK YOU! it's like having you sit next to me sharing a photo album and smiling twice. sure wish I could give you my list of groups I would love your opinion on...heck I can wish, right? I love this piece. The song is in D minor (the saddest key of all music) and he wrote this piece post divorce with his wife. The story behind this piece makes the breakdown even more powerful, your emotions feel the anger he does when he busts it down on the drums. Plus, knowing the song is led by the drums and singing comes second, he was ahead of his time. He had no right to go this hard but he did. Thank you Phil and thank you for your honest reactions!

You miss soo much by not watching LIVE performances when listening to the music from decades gone bye. For example to see Phil live and sing this and the reactions from the crowd is part of the experience. You are not doing yourselves orthe artists justice by just sitting there and listening to a recording rather than witnessing the crowds response and the energy a performer can draw from the crowd. I refer you to an Australian Legend John Farnham singing Your the Voice LIVE with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra back in the eighties. You will then see the what I mean.

The song In The Air was from the album “Face Value,” Face Value, was written by Phil Collins. It was about him the divorce he went through with his first wife. The whole album was about his struggles he faced going through a painful divorce.
He started on Genesis as a drummer then head singer quit forcing them to look for a new head singer. After auditioning tons of singers they couldn’t find the right voice. Phil Collin’s stood up and told the band, “ it needs to be sung like this.” After that history was made.
