Yep, its crazy considering he drummed with Genesis from 1971 to 2007. AND with jazz fusion band Brand X! Some of the greatest Progressive Rock and jazz fusion drumming ever. He's up there with Bruford as the greatest drummer of the last half century. A shame he can no longer drum.

Bonzo was a great drummer no doubt, but unfortunately only had 10 years with Zep. And Collins and Bruford played complex various time signatures in Progressive Rock and Jazz fusion bands. Their jazz chops sets them in a class by themselves, over Carl Palmer, Neil Peart, Keith Moon and Bonzo.

I just don’t agree. It may be the best video recording due to it being the last pro-shot performance, but his voice, even then, nearly 20 years ago, wasn’t near was it was at his peak in the 80’s, and that really elevates those earlier performances, even if the video isn’t as clear. I especially like 'Mama' and the one with Eric Clapton 'I Wish It Would Rain Down'. The video is clever with so many little details and references to Hollywood. Plus, the band really hams it up on acoustic while the music is electric. Eric deadpans like a pro as he waves his guitar around like a rock star. Very tongue-in-cheek. GREAT REACTION GUYS!! This is the best live version out there , audio and video quality wise. Its from 2004 in Paris.
The buildup, the anticipation and the TIMING OF HIS WALK HAS TO BE PERFECT. He's done that song at every solo concert since 1982, so he has that slow walk timed PERFECTLY for the huge drum fill! Its a master class in staging and performance.
And yes, those were always real drums on this song, using a GATED REVERB EFFECT, that Collins himself developed while drumming on his ex Genesis band mate and prior lead singer Peter Gabriel's song INTRUDER from his Melt album. The gated reverb is a way of increasing and prolonging the amount of echo reverb via compression you get on the drums, the "gate" controls the time of the sustained echo. The idea is to make those drums sound even louder and "bigger" sounding. Peter wanted that sound with no cymbals for a eerie creepy drum sound for INTRUDER. So that is the 1st song to use this Gated Reverb Effect, 1980. Phil liked what he came up with so he used it on this 1981 iconic In the Air Tonight which defines this heavy drum sound in the 80s. I would LOVE it if you guys could react to Gabriel's INTRUDER, (not a video), it's one of his best songs and you'll love it.
Also, other great songs with this signature Collins drum sound are:
    >I DONT CARE ANYMORE from Collins 2nd album 1982, this time the heavy drum sound starts right away as Phil directs his anger and frustration over his marriage failing through the drums. The original album cut or there are a few great early 80s videos where Phil sings while the great Chester Thompson is doing Phil's drum parts.
    >MAMA>Genesis self titled album. Huge hit, opening track of the album, similar to ITAT as the heavy drum fill kicks in during the middle of the song. There is a good live video from 1987 Wembley outdoors, its the opening song of the concert. Same type of gated reverb heavy loud drumming.
Phil was everywhere in the 80s, that drum sound was iconic and very influential and copied.
Re when in the concert this was played, I saw Phil Collins solo band tours 4 different years. My recollection is early on it was the last song of the set or an encore. But by this time, 2004, my recollection is that it was the FIRST song after a mid concert intermission. That way the crowd had time to get settled in, and Phil had time to get ready and the stage set up (his drum kit was hidden and then rose up to that top level). That's the way he did it the last time I saw him do ITAT in 1997.
Thanks for the great reaction, please DO INTRUDER and the other 2 if possible.

I saw Phil on his "Hello, I Must be Going" tour, 1983, and it was astonishing! He had Face Value, HIMBG, and he had songs from his Fusion (Jazz/Rock) band Brand X to play in the set! He didn't play any Genesis songs but he was fine with all those other hits and deep-cuts from his first two albums. It was incredible! Not only is he one of the best drummers and singers of all time, he's also one of the best Front Men and songwriters of all time! What a career! He's such an inspiration for me (I'm a drummer and a writer too)!

How is it that Phil is so frail while Ted looks like he has more energy than he did 40 years ago. I am sure it has nothing to do with Phil Collins being a lifelong alcoholic & prescription drug addict, atheist vs Ted Nugent a Born Again believer in Jesus with a lifetime of zero drug or alcohol use.

Every time I watch this video it reminds me of the first time I watched it. I was an anxiety ridden, waiting for him to get to his drum set. Yelling out loud to nobody in particular, “he’s walking to his drums too slow 😰!!!” When he’s walking up that last set of stairs, and he turns back and sings, “I remember, don’t worry, how could I ever forget…” like he is teasing the drums.

I don't think this is the last song of the show. There's another song, well two, "drums, drums and more drums" where Phil, Chester Thompson, the other drummer and they guy playing the congas, can't remember his name, that goes into "Take Me Home" which is an all out party on stage. At the end everyone takes a bow.

I would venture a guess that most who have seen this video prefer the live version; over the studio one, something you can’t say about every song or performance in music. Having seen it live myself in concert I will always contend it’s almost like a different song, as the emotion when he performs it live certainly comes across much more strongly.
