  • 8/28/23. I had been to the Tetons once in 2016 but wanted to come back to bag the Grand Teton. This was an awesome hike/scramble/climb, and honestly wasn't too sketchy, but it's not for everyone. It starts at the Lupine Meadows Trailhead in Grand Teton National Park, in the state of Wyoming.
    Wyoming Whiskey is a great site for beta on the route, which describes such features as the eye of the needle, the chockstone chimney, the belly roll almost, the bell roll, the black rock chimney, the briggs slabs, the double chimney, the owen chimney, sargent's chimney, the three stooges, the horse, etc.
    Note that the thumbnail picture was on another hike in 2016 when I went up Paintbrush Canyon and then down Cascade Canyon, and got a great view of the Grand. This is not on the route I took for this hike.

      no offense, but if you're doing this yourself you need to put in the time to research the route thoroughly to make sure you know what you are doing and are safe. If you don't know the trailhead that probably isn't a good sign. I don't know what you mean by asking where the ropes are. Most people have ropes and pro for this route, I just free solo'd it

      @@HikingEngineer Unfortunately, haven’t made it to Chile yet (almost went two years ago), but I’ve heard good things. Definitely recommend Bariloche and El Chalten in Argentina though if you can make it over there. They are a bit more climbing oriented (especially Chalten), but are well worth it even for the normal hiking trails (this is coming from someone who doesn’t “climb” climb and just hikes/trail runs).
      Bariloche kind of reminds me of a mix between Bend, OR and the Tahoe area. One of my favorite international cities I’ve been to. And El Chalten is spectacular as well, mainly for the surrounding scenery, but the town is growing quite quickly as well.

    Man, I loved the video. After reading Wyoming Whiskey it helped me better put together in my head where and how serious some of the obstacles are. I think there's a good chance I make my own attempt this year. Was 8/28/23 the climb date? What would you consider the crux of your route? From the commentary I would assume Owens Chimney. Do you think the Catwalk may have been an easier alternative?

    • @HikingEngineer
      @HikingEngineer  5 місяців тому +1

      Thanks! Yeah the WW site and description takes awhile to get through but it's great beta. yes 8/28/23 was when I did it. yes the OC was the toughest part (up and definitely down). Because I feel comfortable climbing I wanted to go up that way, and also there was some ice around so I think the catwalk could've had some, but honestly I should have probably gone down the catwalk way. The downclimb was pretty tough of the OC

    • @kosmicparasite0749
      @kosmicparasite0749 2 місяці тому

      he shows great beta and everything but also keep in mind this is probably the driest ive ever seen on the owen spalding, pretty typical to get a snowstorm around that time of year and the chimneys would be much more slick if that was the case if you look at Mediocre Amateur’s video of it you can get a better idea of what to expect in icier conditions same time of year please be careful out there and also most days in the summer afternoon thunderstorms are typical so be aware that most people can do the owen spalding without the use of ropes but choose to bring them just in case for quick rappel exits should a storm pop up. the tetons are known for causing people to get struck by lightning it is very deadly, not trying to scare you but want to mention just in case you didnt know.

    • @HikingEngineer
      @HikingEngineer  7 місяців тому +1

      Thank you! I try to do my best in all my videos to show people what the hikes actually are like, that's why I started the channel. I would say yes, if you're comfortable on class 4 you should be ok. The route down the Owen Chimney was tough, but you can take the catwalk around on the side and presumably it would be much easier. I think you can always avoid tough class 5 downclimbing if need be
