The selflessness of those rescuers in direct opposition to the selfish ingratitude of Campbell. What happened to his female hiking partner? She isn’t mentioned at all. Without her fortitude, no rescue would have occurred. ⛑️
All these dudes (rightfully) got medals, praise, fame. Can we pour one out for the person who also made all the right decisions and made sure her partner got out alive: Lorraine McCoy. Her survival and medical know-how, resourcefullness and cool head were the entire reason they were rescued in the first place. Incredible mountaineer right there.
Totally agree! I also wonder if he blamed her for his accident and can only imagine how hellacious it was to sit with him that entire night. I’d love to read her account of this situation.

I heard similar stories of people being over the top ungrateful from SAR Squids. One Japanese guy tried to sue the US Navy for rescuing him floating in the Ocean waiting for the sharks after his boat sank (near Iwakuni). Some people and more importantly their egos cannot handle needing to be rescued. They turn outward and blame everyone for the predicament they got themselves into.
That's exactly what it is. Their ego. Campbell's over inflated ego was so bruised, he couldn't handle that he needed assistance. You'd think time gives him some perspective. But nope. Even in his 70s or 80s now, he still sticks to his criticisms.

What an arrogant, rude, ungrateful human Campbell is. Disgusting. I was a bit upset that this video retelling didn't let us know how Lorraine McCoy fared. She kept rhat ingrate alive to be rescued. I decided to do a search since nothing was included here and found out she was finally able to reunite with the rescuers and thank them when she and they were involved in the making of the film, The Grand Rescue which debuted as a documentary in 2014.
McCoy was guided off the mountain right before the rescue began. She wasn't injured so was no problem for her getting down. Her only dilemna was getting help for Campbell, and she did her job. When she was reunited years later, she gave all of them a hug and called them her heroes. Campbell was interviewed in his home, and let me tell you, he is definitely a miserable PoS.
Far too often the knighting of individuals as heroes is done for actions undeserving such a grand rank. Here we have the true meaning of the grand rank with six amazing rescuers and a seventh amazing climbing companion. You seven exhibited the heroic actions we all pray to have or dream we will exhibit when called upon. Bless you all.
I think Campbell was pretty aware of the situation he was in. He was also young and arrogant enough that the possibility he wouldn't be rescued was inconceivable to him. He also knew the SAR that pulled off a litter descent to a glacier on the north face of the Grand would become instant rock stars. And he was jealous. That's next level arrogance and entitlement right there.
While the fact that Campbell spent a large portion of his rescue boasting about his skills, complaining, reprimanding, and talkin' smack to his rescuing party is a bit silly in hindsight, it certainly didn't do much for his reputation. Especially when considering he never even bothered to reach out to any of them afterward to offer a simple "thank you," and actually went out of his way to actively ignore them. I've got immense respect for those selfless men who worked tirelessly and risked their lives to save the life of a fellow climber (who just so happened to be a pestiferous, egotistical asshole) who would have been left for dead without them. True heroes in every sense of the word.
This dude is an absolute piece of garbage! I was badly injured in a fall back in 2015, and on the anniversary of the men that rescued me, I would go visit them at their station and express my gratitude to them for helping every year until I moved away.

The Tetons and the surrounding areas are a magical place. My first attempt on the Grand took place in 1977. I was 17 years old and I had just graduated from high school. Weather held me back. I returned a couple of years later and was successful, I climbed it one more time a couple years after that. I am very surprised how the injured climber behaved. Thirty years ago I assisted carrying out and injured back country skier with a similar broken leg. The bone was sticking through his ski pant. The man was a orthopedic surgeon and he knew exactly how bad the break was. He was telling us what to do for a short time and then the shock took over and we never heard a word from him, only grunts of pain. I never heard from him again and I honestly I forget his name quickly. I was just happy we got him down and I could get back to skiing. It’s very difficult to carry someone in a litter over steep, icy and rocky terrain. If you spend enough time outdoors you have a high chance of someone needing your help or yourself needing help. I have always had some regrets about not staying in Jackson Hole. I have been back many times. Great video, thanks. Take care

I always love hearing the last few minutes of the video. I'm a free spirit and do careless things at times but since watching your videos I'm still a free spirit but more cautious. Haha! I try to be objective to the subjects in the videos. But I couldn't hide my disdain for Campbell. He's deplorable. Even to this day, he still holds those same sentiments about the people who saved his life. I'm sure it crossed their minds, but they had a job to do, regardless of the appreciativeness of the victim. For that, they get so much credit putting their lives on the line for someone like that.

Well, from what I could find, he was still alive and involved in the documentary about the rescue released about 10 years ago. He was still steadfast about not giving the guys any credit even after all these years. They had a reunion with all the guys and the woman who was with Gaylord. He was invited but declined. They tried reaching out to him over the years but he never spoke with them or thanked them. He was still a jerk in the documentary so I don't feel sorry about calling him an ungrateful POS. These guys had a job to do and they did it, regardless of the gratitude of the person being saved. Shows the professionalism and heart these guys have.
He was the world’s best climber but he fell, snapped his little leg and had to be lower down the mountain in a basket. Sounds like he was just a delusional a hole.
Narcissism--personality disorder, it's presumed that people are born with it and it's not changeable. What if you were born with it and were left with doing the best you can. I had a teacher who's first name was Gaylyn. She was AWFUL. She was snobby, stuck-up, self-centered and a complete arse. In school, she was even worse. Her attitude became so bad in general, our school finally fired her, which in turn caused her to be even nastier to the public. Her attitude was bad enough, the new gal in town ended up dumping her (Gaylyn's) dinner on her instead of serving it to the table.
I was training a girl at work and one of out locations is Gaylord. She LOST it but was laughing so hard you couldn't help but laugh with her. Honestly it took like 10 minutes to get back to work. 😂😂😂

Well, from what I could find, he was still alive and involved in the documentary about the rescue released about 10 years ago. He was still steadfast about not giving the guys any credit even after all these years. They had a reunion with all the guys and the woman who was with Gaylord. He was invited but declined. They tried reaching out to him over the years but he never spoke with them or thanked them. He was still a jerk in the documentary so I don't feel sorry about calling him an ungrateful POS. These guys had a job to do and they did it, regardless of the gratitude of the person being saved. Shows the professionalism and heart these guys have.

Narcissism--personality disorder, it's presumed that people are born with it and it's not changeable. What if you were born with it and were left with doing the best you can. There is indeed a problem when that person's non-empathetic tendencies are damaging to others. Take world leaders, for example. Millions murdered throughout history. I had a teacher who's first name was Gaylyn. She was AWFUL. She was snobby, stuck-up, self-centered and a complete arse. In school, she was even worse. Her attitude became so bad in general, our school finally fired her, which in turn caused her to be even nastier to the public. Her attitude was bad enough, the new gal in town ended up dumping her (Gaylyn's) dinner on her instead of serving it to the table.

I was training a girl at work and one of out locations is Gaylord. She LOST it but was laughing so hard you couldn't help but laugh with her. Honestly it took like 10 minutes to get back to work. 😂😂😂
