After moving out west to AZ in 2019 for a lifestyle change and easier access to mountains, I bought a GoPro in May 2021 and started recording portions of my hikes. Not only it is a way for friends and family to see what I'm up to, but also I want the hiking community to benefit from my videos, as I tend to do a lot of longer, harder, and/or offtrail type adventures. I'm hopeful my footage will help others as they decide if these hikes are suitable for them! I'm always happy to answer any questions in the comments. I hike all over the Western US but have lived all over, so have hiked on the east coast as well. Unfortunately plenty of my hiking was before I started recording videos. Over time I will start expanding more internationally, and I went to Iceland in the summer of 2022. Current trips are planned to Europe to bag the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc in August 2024, as well as finishing the Coloardo 14ers in July 2024. Patagonia is tentative for January 2025. Happy hiking!
Natural Bridges National Monument, UT - Big Loop
The main attraction in National Bridges National Monument is three large natural bridges, Sipapu Bridge, Kachina Bridge, and Owachomo Bridge. You can link them all together with an 8 mile loop. I also took a small separate spur trail after to see Horsecollar Ruins from above.

Javelina 100 is a popular 100 mile race in the desert of McDowell Mountain Regional Park in Fountain Hills, close to Phoenix and Scottsdale, AZ. This was my first 100 mile race after completing a 100 km race in January 2024. It was very hot out there (about 97 degrees F) but I felt like I was hydrating and getting enough salt, but my muscles basically stopped working and I couldn't do anything ...

Rad! I need to get back to Utah some day.
Love the northern arizona / southern utah area
yeah quite a lot to see!
We have to get back to Utah. There is so much more there than just the National Parks. Good video.
Oh, and I would have been leary of that bridge collapsing walking across it. lol
@@robertjaycox8488 it was pretty big ha
I've been climbing the Siphon Draw for 45 years and remember when there was wreckage from a Air Force training jet that crashed in the draw. There were pieces of wings and all kinds of parts and the Boy Scout Troop from Apache Junction made it a troop effort to remove every trace fo the wreckage they could find and haul it physically off the mountain. Everyone likes Flatiron and most never find the way to the very top from Flatiorn because the trail is almost hidden and hard to find
i did not know that!
I visited this place in September on my way to Moab, pretty cool area. I did not do the loop, instead I did the 3 individual down and up trails 🥵 Did you see there are petroglyphs at Kachina Bridge 😎
I did not but after seeing Newspaper Rock I usually don't seek out petroglyphs
This is in my backyard, so to speak. I live in Dome Valley, near YPG. You pointed right toward my house when you said, "...whatever valley." And the peak you pointed out is not Fortuna Peak, but Boot Peak.
oh ok thanks! any recs of other peaks to hit in this area? I'll be back to do Muggins and Little Mohawk (or Mohawk?)
@HikingEngineer Unfortunately, aside from Boot Peak I can't give any recommendations. I don't even know if there are any marked trails up there, but it looks like it would be fun.
@@scout3058 I'll put that on my list
@@HikingEngineer That would be great! I look forward to seeing the video!
If you can run 60 miles in that heat, think how far you could hike!
Yea, I did the east and west (west is higher). East was sketchy, frankly dangerous. BTW, make sure you check out the Fisher Towers if you haven't already visited them, in Moab. The peaks are all technical, but it's great just to wander around without summitting anything.
yeah I've done fisher towers before and will do it again
Cool, I got lost coming down Muggins so bailed on this one, maybe have to go back to get it some time...
did you do the east peak of Muggins like Stav?
We met at the summit on August 8th. I have pictures of you in the video, you overtook us. On the descent you were damn lucky not to fall. The fixed rope was icy and you noticed the impending worst case scenario. That's why I went with a guide and am already a good climber, but not with crampons. A nice video and channel. Good luck to you in Patagonia. But also think about your limits. Best wishes Dirk
yeah that was def a sketchy section. I like to stick to non-snow and ice type of terrain for sure. I the only people I remember on the summit was the big group that too the pics of me as I was leaving the summit area. In the beginning I had it to myself!
Loved the video and use to live down there in the desert. I just hate living in the land of Cacti. Everywhere there was something wanting to stab you.
yeah gotta be careful!
Cool, I like the desert varnish, always good to have stuff right off a major highway. Another good (non-peak) hike right off Highway 8 is Valley of the Moon, just east of Jacumba
Lol, it's on alltrails, it must be easy.
Where can i find harder trails?
@@jumbo6481 my channel! ha
ha glad you enjoyed that
Just a thought.... I was looking for video of Saddle Mountain for an upcoming trip and I ran across yours. Don't take offense, though you probably will. You have some really great video of the climb and I found all of it interesting and valuable but I also found your dialogue to be negative. What do Words like boring and not worth the time bring to the table? You shoot yourself in the foot. When you use those types of words no matter how good the visuals it makes me think, if you obviously aren't enjoying yourself then is this worth watching? From the sound of it, you were able to get to the top and back in a morning very easily and the views were spectacular. Sure it was a simple climb for you compared to others. You could have turned that whole thing into something inspiring for someone with little to no experience with a few hours to spare looking for a relatively easy climb. Your audience is diversified. That could be someones Everest and a beginning to a lifelong hobby. Just sayin... Like I said don't take it personally. The visuals were great.
Nice work regardless of the outcome, it was insanely hot out there this year and you still showed up the start line and put in 60miles during the hottest JJ on record (all while not feeling your best)!! More props for still getting your video posted even if it resulted in an unlucky outcome. Hope to see you back out there next year! 🙌🙌
thanks man
Curious what time of day you started this hike? And anyone who complains about you posting a hike video is clearly not an intelligent person. That’s me putting it nicely for UA-cam. 😉 I’d prefer to be way more blunt about people like that. Great video. Thanks for sharing. 👍
thanks haha
Nice, cool to see all those bristlecones, this is one I haven't done
You mentioned carbon plate shoes, What shoes were you wearing and what was the longest you had run in them before? I’d first suspect electrolytes but you seem sure you were up on those. Carbons definitely hit different when you are fatigued I have found but I wasn’t 60+ miles deep in a 100F day so I could see that effect being much worse.
I did a 100k earlier this year in the same shoes, Salomon Speedcross 6
The Salomon Speedcross 6 is not a carbon plated shoe (although one of the colorways is called carbon).
@@1519Spring to my understanding, there is a carbon rock plate in the speedcross 5 and 6 (or maybe it's not carbon and is made of something else?). there is def a rock plate in there which probably isn't ideal for long distance running
Hey, have you climbed Borah Peak of Idaho?
Nope, but next summer plan is to hit Borah, Granite, and Gannett with some more stuff in Tetons/Glacier
@HikingEngineer wondering if you have highest of every state in mind? Look forward to seeing you next summer.
@@gotsu21 I don't, too many non descript ones that aren't mountains. But I've done AZ, UT, CA, OR, CO, WA, TX, SD, HI, NM so need to at least hit the other western states, NV still need to do as well
One of these days you’re gonna summit Denali and make the most casual summit video ever made. 😂
ha I'm on the fence if I want to do Denali, too much mountaineering and cold for me
Pretty sure where you got off track is the route to mummy springs which leads to the amazing Raintree that’s the oldest Bristlecone in the area. It’s huge. Just past that you can get to Mummy’s Toe and Mummy mountain summit from Mummy Springs. McFarland is a beautiful hike with an unrelenting long steep gully to the peak. Nothing more than easy class 3 but epic views. If you have time check out The Sisters Traverse, Mack’s Peak, and Mummy head to toe. We have some vids on lasvegasareatrails UA-cam showing these in last 6 months
yeah i'll be back at some point to bag Mummy and McFarland, most likely in late May
Nice video. You're one of the few videographers that film the terrain between Old Army Pass and the summit of Mt Langley. I hiked to New Army Pass earlier this summer but didn't summit Langley. I plan to return next summer to summit Langley via New Army Pass. Since you went up Old Army Pass, what's your opinion of the trail conditions on that section? I've been warned by others not to take that route. I'd like to see your take on it. I do like NAP, but I'm curious about OAP.
This was back in 2021 when I did this, but I don't remember any stretches of trail being anything but easy class 2 walking. Maybe some landslides or rockfalls have made it worse since I did it?
@HikingEngineer Thank you. I might inquire at Eastern Sierra Visitors Center next time I'm there to see what updates they can provide.
I don't see any failure here. You ran 60+ miles of a REALLY tough first 100-miler due to the heat. Training for my first 50K in Moab in March, and this is inspirational asf. Thanks for sharing with us.
thanks for the kind words
100 miles is a long way to run! … and you don’t really know what that means until you try. I failed in my first 100 too - a big part of my successful runs was not making as many mistakes
Tough luck on this year's race. I hear starting fast only works for the top tier athletes. Not a runner myself, but really do appreciate the effort those that can put into it! Hiked up Mount Ord Saturday, and of course, there were runners doing multiple 7 mile ascents! Maybe the Mogollon Monster 100 race in September 2025 is more you style, hiking up and down the rim 6 or 8 times!
yeah I think I like steeper terrain ha
Went to Zion last week and did this one, South Ariel, Hepworth/Roof, and Deidre. Mountain of the Sun was incredible and definitely my favorite. Secret weapons were clutch for the crux and for South Ariel. Hoping to go back for more peaks. Love your videos man!
nice - glad my videos can help some! Next time try for G2, Destination, Gifford, Kinesava, South and North Guardian Angles, and Lady Mountain! Those are some of my favorites
That was such a beautiful day🙌🏽
Magnificent views and well-orchestrated video. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Phil!
Cool soundtrack. Where did you find it?
it's just all from the free creator music library that youtube provides. I usually just find songs in other videos on youtube and Shazaam them
Man I’ve always wanted to do this, non of my friends hike so I’m always up at Whitney or the High Sierras here in SoCal by myself but a hike like this for me is unfamiliar territory.
this is a pretty tough - make sure you are comfortable on class 3/4/5 exposed rock
Climb down is so sketchy. I'd rather base jump it 😂
yeah that would be fun

Nice climb, congratulations! You were very much alone on the descent. Where did all the morning summit climbers go?
i had passed them all
City FAILED to provide reasonable parking
what do you mean? You can park anywhere on the road
@@HikingEngineer that’s only a very limited amount of parking spaces that doesn’t reflect current demand
@@vertihvost7675 if you go at the wrong time to Echo it can be hard to get parking, but I figured since you commented on Cholla you were trying to park on Invergordon Rd -- there are over 100 spots on the road, usually it's easy enough to get one or find someone leaving. But just don't go right on a weekend morning in the winter months and you should be ok

Amazing video! I really enjoyed watching all the hand holds....I had a hankering to climb a while back, so I did Withita Mountains, not Weavers, but still a fun class 3. Get up is fun, getting down... not so much.
thanks for the comment and for watching!
This peak was no joke; I did the trail off US-50 (6mi, 4000') and it brought me to my limit. Granted I've never been at such high altitudes and am not super conditioned, but it took me like six hours to do, with the last bit of talus boulders taking an hour on its own. I felt so sorry for the guys that I went with who wanted to do the Crystal Range Traverse...
I'm not familiar with the traverse but I enjoyed this peak, and realized after there were other routes to get there. Nice and steep the last couple miles up this way!
I can see why the commentators are impressed, and I congratulate you on successfully climbing the Matterhorn. That said, it's evident that you're not experienced in this kind of terrain, and some parts of the climb were irresponsible. My concern is that videos like this inspire inexperienced people to attempt similarly challenging climbs, which can lead to serious accidents. Best of luck with your future climbs!
I appreciate the comment, but I'm curious why you said it looks like I don't have experience on this type of terrain? I've done many (hundreds) of class 3/4/easy class 5 exposed scrambles and ridges, mainly throughout the US, so I definitely have experience with stuff like this
Saw your business card on my car at the TH and saw you pass me on Aasgard. Love the content!
haha nice, i had a few cards sitting around so put a couple on the cars next to me. Thanks for watching!
My friend and I overnight camped up on top of flat iron this last new years. Honestly one of the coolest things I've ever experienced, as soon as midnight rolled around the entire valley lit up with fireworks, we started super late and had to go up in the dark for around 2 hours with an extra 30 lbs or so each of camping gear but it was really dope lol would recommend
nice! I can't say I've ever camped in the Sups as I almost exclusively do day hikes, but I'm sure it would be awesome
When you get up there a bit there's a few places where you wouldn't want to lose your balance and fall to the right.
can't say I found those places but maybe I didn't explore high enough
@@HikingEngineer Just from the video it looks like a few places up there have some pretty steep drops where if you fell, you'd go crashing down a good long way. Maybe it was just an illusion from the camera angle, but it looked convincing to me.
@@jimo3173 it's not too bad! do you live in the area?
@@HikingEngineer I actually live in Glendale so maybe 20 to 30 minutes away from there.
@@jimo3173 nice, hopefully my videos give you some ideas for stuff to do in AZ

Your definition of "easy" and "tame" is vastly different than mine.
fair enough haha, i guess it just wasn't as sketchy or tough as I expected coming into it
If you think the crestones are tame, what other 14ers challenged you?
I just have done a lot so i generally don't think things are that sketchy or exposed, etc. Obviously don't take this lightly. But I thought Little Bear (west ridge direct) - Blanca - Ellingwood, the 4 in the Chicago Basin from Purgatory, the Bells Traverse, and Snowmass (mainly bc of the snow), and El Diente - Mt Wilson - Wilson Peak were all tougher for sure. Based on conditions when i did Pyramid you could argue Pyramid was also tougher with sketchy snow traverse. Capitol was similar.
Hey man, I did an attempt of the matterhorn on Sept 1st 2024, and I stayed in the exact same room as you did! What a coincidence! I was in bed 1 BTW.
nice! did you summit?
Great video, love to relive this stuff. I think that's called Little Yosemite Valley there on the South side.
Nice video! Planning on doing clouds rest and the half dome diving board in May. Yosemite is an amazing park the granite is truly amazing. Also hitting bridge mountain in Vegas and lady mountain in Zion in a few weeks thx for the walk throughs! I would have otherwise never considered such hikes
yw! Nice name btw - are you a big lifter? Glad some of my videos could help you out! Bridge and Lady and some of my favorites!
2nd peak I ever summited. It's a fine hike apart from the massive amount of traffic for what would otherwise be a pretty mediocre peak. Nearby Monument offers the same experience with none of the crowds.
yeah lots of people but good little workout when I only have a couple hrs to spare after a work day!
