Absolutely one of the best chapter overview videos I’ve seen, and I’ve looked at quite a lot of them. I think you did a great job of capturing the nature of the salamanders who I love. Some great ideas that I’m going to try on the customization. Vulkan lives!
Really like this new kind of video! Always thought I wasn't that bothered about collecting Space Marines compared to other factions but you've now got me thinking about Salamander successor chapter colour schemes! Also love a cork based base!
Fantastic video Guy; now I have a perfect excuse to make my own Slamanaders army Some other things about the Salamanders too: - Vulkan is a perpetual. Everytime he dies, his body disappears and he respawns somewhere else in the galaxy. Vulkan lives, and his return is inevitable! - Salamanders are very self-reliant; they frequently make their own custom field repairs to their weapons and equipment instead of getting it repaired by a Techmarine: no two Slamander weapons are the same, so you can go nuts with not just armour upgrades, but weapon upgrades as well!
Love the idea of this series, lore, hobby and tactics in one video. Also a good reference point for newer players wanting to find out more without the fear of going down rabbit holes. Keep it up! (looking forward to some of the successor chapters!)
I've always watched your videos since I got into warhammer so I might aswell say it here, I finally managed to go England and see a warhammer store in person it was cool
I know the danger of long videos can affect the way UA-cam promotes them, but this was really engaging Guy. You will never convert someone who has been a Space Wolf since 3rd Ed so this should show you how engaging it was. (Loved the basing ideas.) I am looking forward to the next in the series.
This is a brilliant idea for new collectors, can’t wait to see new additions to it as they come, great to see when stock-standard space marines become a really unique and personal force to a player :)
I love it how he tried to pronounce his Patreon supporter "Verbuggter Herr der Dunkelheit" right. The three german words: close to perfect. The one english word: Waaaayy off! :D Loved the video, I am really happy for the series!
I feel like you revisited the lava tyranids idea for the first lava base, and I can say that looks a LOT better than before the little differences means everything, maybe a neutral grey dry brush after wards and some ash black texture paint in some random areas and it’ll look legendary
Love the longer format. I could start and stop, jump around, and get a ton of info in one place! Thank you for making and sharing. Can't wait for the next one!
The new studio looks great man! I really loved this video. The lore part was epic, and the painting was also amazing, perfect content as always Guy, great stuff 👏👏👏
I love the idea for this series, and I'm really glad it started with the Salamanders -- super underrated chapter. Of course I'd love to see this branch out to other factions, like the Imperial Guard regiments, but I also know that's asking a *lot* given just how many Astartes chapters there are to go through!
I wish this video existed when I was just starting with Warhammer back at the start of 9th edition, Salamanders were my first army and working on them and playing games with them was a large part of what kept me sane during Covid. I'm really proud of how they look, and I've been meaning to go back and put the finishing touches on them and finish up the stuff that still needs more work, I'm going to try and utilize some of these tips when I do. Thanks for all the great ideas, Guy. Would love to see more of this series, even though you've already covered my favorite chapter. Vulkan lives!
I enjoy the structure and format of this video, going into different aspects of the chapter/legion. I think it would be nice if you did continue this format for other chapters.
5:20 it's also worth pointing out that the Eldar (not sure if they were Drukhari at the time,) used to come onto Nocturne and hunt the people for sport before Vulkan was picked up by Big E. This is more of the reason why Salamanders strongly dislike the Eldar, but more specifically the Drukhari.
It was the Drukhari that raided Nocturne and that is the reason they hate them. They don't actually hold any extra ill will against the Eldar otherwise, but they're more than happy to put an Xenos to the torch that the emperor commands.
I like how excited you sounded when showing your finished model. I think we all should commit and do our best, but also remember to derive joy from the finished project.
I love the Salamanders! Their colours, their lore, their primarch, their usage of "dragons" and fire... The only space marine mini I ever painted was a Salamander. I play chaos space marines and my warband's lore is that they were Salamanders corrupted by the Alpha Legion...so I paint their skin black. Btw, I really like that you chose the Salamanders as the first chapter in what I hope will become a series covering all the chapters. Blood Angels next, please :)
Awesome video especially for Sally players like me. I just finished my ~1000p of Salamanders and i used Tabards and Cloaks seen at around 9:34 for my Assault Terminators which also fit very well lore wise in terms of their thunder hammer weaponary. I painted these extra bits in a dark red coulour like the cloaks of Agatone and He‘Stan and ist looks quite awesome i must say. Just wanted to bring some more inspiration to everyone who chose to pick „the nice guys“ of 40k. Vulkan lives!
This was really timely, as I'd settled on Salamanders for my Leviathan marines. I was also planning on scratch molding some dragon hide on the pauldron, but wasn't sure how to approach it. Really appreciate the help this video is going to be!
The new studio looks great! And the Salamander looks even greater!! But i think instead of "Astartes Archive" it should be "Archive Astartes". Just seems fitting with "Adeptus Astartes".
10/10 video my man - I can’t wait to see a whole series of this. Of course the first founding chapters are always a hit, but I’d love you to do some of the lesser known but equally cool chapters like the Necropolis Hawks, Minotaurs, Soul Drinkers, Astral Claws - I could go on and on! Cheers!
Thanks for including my mini (on its best side too no less)! I'm not the most accomplished painter by any stretch, in fact I would say mine was the least good of the bunch, some truly amazing painters in the community! But I'm super happy with the freehanded flames and for an experiment (I'm an ork boy mainly) I don't think its too shabby!
Great video, love to see attention being given to the Salamanders As a Salamander painter myself, here's some other tipps: 1) I prefer to do the opposite of Guy's lava base effect but that's just preference. Instead of making the spots darker, you can go the other way around and start off with a uniform red and then go lighter. Gives it a much more subdued look. 2) Experiment with secondary colours. For example the red eye lenses work from a lore standpoint but often they're depicted with yellow ones instead, hiding their red eyes. This can be used to make unhelmeted marines stand out a bit more and imo aids the more humane look of the Salamanders. Further I usually paint any scales in a dark red but I've also seen them in black or violet. This breaks up the green nicely. Same thing wiht the gold, you can go for a dirty look with a brown wash or give it a red tinge with a red wash, which makes it stand out that bit more from the green 3) To get some of that dusty look if you want to have your Salmanders in an ashy field or waste, use pigment powders! They're excellent for this though not that good at sticking around if you actually play with them unless you lock them in with a coat of varnish, which imo dampens the effect a bit. Lastly there's the shoulder trim question that I see a lot online when it comes to Salamanders. Sometimes they're painted with golden trim, sometimes with green. You can go with whichever you like, I personally like giving only the veteran and high ranking units a golden trim, while standard troops stick with the green trim. Makes those other units stand out a bit more.
I'm new to 40k. I've been playing and building for about two months. I've dove deeply into creator content to engulf myself with this wonderful game. I have to say, your video is a cut above the rest. Full breakdown. You put a lot into this and I love it. Big ups my guy. 😎
Absolutely fantastic video! I quite like the idea of this "all in one" resource. The addition of a conversion section was also quite nice! Regarding edge highlighting: if anyone wants to expedite it even more, I recommend keeping it patchy. Short lines here, dots there. Not worrying about completely highlighting an entire edge. It's faster and gives a chipped appearance - making it looked battle damaged and amplifying the effect if you've also added scratches.
I've been meaning to start painting Salamanders for a while now, as I have a number of old Tacticals sitting in my pile of shame. I considered doing a few for the recent 90s marines painting challenge, but had to go out of state for a week, which scuppered any possibility of that. I definitely think a set of Sternguard Veterans using heavy Spellcrow parts would look lovely. For those looking to spice up the paint scheme, consider painting flames on legs of your infantry. Drawing the brush downward only can make the flames seem to fade as they rise, as paint tends to collect where the brush stroke ends. If you're making drake scales on your models, consider using a completely different color from the armor, like red or yellow, to make them pop.
My way of painting bare Salamander faces is to prime with black, and then, dry brush with a dark grey. The nicely detailed GW faces work well with this.
"Huzzah! A man of quality!" I've been using thermoplastic moulding material (blue stuff) to make impressions/moulds from the Forgeworld Firedrake Terminators, particularly the tabards, for my conversions. There's also loads of 3d printed helmets (shapeways and etsy) with stylized drake helms similar to those worn by aforementioned Terminators and the Pyroclasts. Also I've gone for a slightly more natural/muted green using Molotow Premium's Fern Green as the main colour, sprayed from above and sides leaving the black just showing on the undersides. The whole model is then given a Biel Tan green wash then given a light drybrush with Moot Green for quick and easy highlight, giving the impression of shadows on the underside but still with a slight green tone.
I was just thinking about starting salamanders as I haven't started a marine army yet despite being in this hobby for years. This has decided it for me
Absolutely love that milliput trick! And if you don't have a cool texture thingy, you can use different stuff for that effect, lke thise toy dinos or even an avocado... It's the correct green after all. Loved the video format. I'm not usually a sapce marine person but they're so central to lore of 40k that it's cool to get that background in.
An amazing (and local to us Essex based peeps) conversion supplier is Archie's Forge! They make the, hands down, best Salamanders helmets for general infantry! Great quality bits that I highly recommend!
Happy to see the Sallys getting some love, great video! I'm really hoping that we get a flamer/melta detachment in the Space Marine codex. I also wouldn't be mad if Adrax's datasheet was changed to be able to lead Bladeguard Vets, as his leadership options are pretty useless right now. The only melee-based unit he can lead are Assault Intercessors and they can already reroll wounds on melee attacks! His datasheet makes no sense! VULKAN LIVES!
zomg..... This is exactly the video I have been looking / waiting for. Getting back into the hobby after a LONG hiatus, and bought the Leviathan box. I started painting the Tyranids to get used to painting again, and was going for the Salamanders as the chapter. Vulcan Lives! That's the battle cry, right?! :) Thank you for your videos, Guy. I always enjoy them.
I love this format. If i could make a suggestion; intersperse the lore, rules, and errata to fit in between steps of a paint-a-long presentation. That way you have something to listen to in between steps and while the model dries

One of my favorite videos you’ve ever done! I hope the next one brings glory to the khan! I could really use some help with the white paint
MY FAVORITE (loyalist) LEGION YESSSSSS
Not a painter, not a wargamer, and familiar with the lore for the most part..
But watched the whole thing and gave a like/comment for the algorithm!
That second base looked fantastic.
Love this idea! Would love to see this done with all chapters, including those who pledged their loyalty to the chaos gods
My way of painting bare Salamander faces is to prime with black, and then, dry brush with a dark grey. The nicely detailed GW faces work well with this.
Awesome concept for this video- would definitely tune in for more of these on other chapters/factions !
I think I have the exact same glass as the one you drink out of at the start here. Nice choice of drink too
Great idea! Congrats! Looking forward for the wolves🐺🐺🐺
Both lore and assembling tips? Hell yeah.
"Huzzah! A man of quality!"
I've been using thermoplastic moulding material (blue stuff) to make impressions/moulds from the Forgeworld Firedrake Terminators, particularly the tabards, for my conversions.
I really want to see this for the Space Wolves. Awesome vid!
Awesome video! Can’t wait to see the rest of the chapters!
It's so cool seeing my favourite Warhammer UA-camr paint my faction
I did it just for you
This is awesome, I just started collecting 40K, and choose Space Wolves, would love to see them next 😊
Such a good idea for a series thank you
Definitely do more, great to have a mini deep dive into each of the chapters, then maybe start going into some of the other factions too!
I would love to see this become a full series, like the start collecting playlist! Blood angels next please!
I thought this was an awesome video. There is slight chapter bias but I’m excited to see if this becomes a continued series or not 🐲🔥
Thanks pal! Glad you liked it
This concept is great! Can't wait for the next video and next chapter. I've been struggling to find a colour scheme for my space marines for months.
Kate's drawing of a salamander Salamander may be the best thing ever.
I just love timestamps! Thanks guys 🥰🥰
Amazing video, really hope to see you cover the other chapters/legions
Yes, more Lore alongside painting would be fantastic, especially for new players like myself
Fun very fun I love the mottled effect I think I’ll use it too plow through a few things in my log .
I love the new ideea, please do this series with each one of the chapters, successors.
After I'm done with my armies of Vashtorr list I plan on getting into Salamanders so this video is perfect!
Thank you for your videos, Guy. I always enjoy them.
I love this format. If i could make a suggestion; intersperse the lore, rules, and errata to fit in between steps of a paint-a-long presentation. That way you have something to listen to in between steps and while the model dries
This is the kind of video i was looking for!! Lore, painting, fun and excellent content, and a great host!! Cheers mate, very good job, will see the next on this series for sure!!
It is a glorious time to be a Salamanders player!!!
Into the fires of battle, unto the Anvil of War!
Vulkan Lives!!!
Vulcan Lives!
Excellent format, and salamanders is even better - as soon as I had the Leviathanbox in my hands I thought "what better against those nasty bugs than fire?"
