if you've done Space Wolves. Your doing Ultramarines, Dark Angels, Blood Angels, and you have 5 left over marines. Why don't you do 1 marine in each of the 5 remaining loyalist legions. So White Scars, Imperial Fists, Iron Hands, Salamanders and Raven Guard.
it's cool not only seeing a retro scheme come back to life, but also it makes me realize just how far painting techniques have come since the 90's, let alone the paints
Absolutely loved seeing this. Some of the 2nd Edition studio Space Wolves are in a case at the Warhammer Store and Cafe in Grapevine TX, and I always can't help but look at them when I stop by. You absolutely nailed the 2nd Edition look with these guys once again.
It's so satisfying to see retro minis painted with such an effort and sort of "redeeming" the old sculpts, that are so often dismissed when compared to new ones. I tip my normal-head-sized-hat to you, sir!
I think people have a tendency of fixating a bit on the bad sculpts and let them represent the "classics" in their minds. The quality of the sculpts were far less consistent back then than they are now (though GW is not always spot on these days either, though nowadays it tends to be clutter that's the big issue), with some still looking great, and some looking not so great. The fact that they tried to cast these in as few pieces as possible also did not necessarily make for the best minis, with some being far better at hiding their flatness than others.
Even though they cower behind walls while the Wolves of Fenris are out doing battle with the enemies of the Allfather, the bonus chapter should probably be Imperial Fists. Gotta get all the primary colours for retro paint jobs.
That shot of the painted squad instantly transported me back to the 90's....to those awesome Saturdays spent in GW with my mates, rolling dice and dreaming of our ultimate armies. I can even smell the old school paint! Nostalgia is powerful indeed!!
I cannot like this video enough! I have been collecting space wolves for about 25 years starting 2nd ed and those awesome metal models. Nostalgia overload.
I loved this. The 90's were just the best for 40k. I had vivid flash backs...to my childhood watching this. In utter bliss. Please keep doing these. 90's style paint schemes were amazing. You did a bang tidy job on those. Well done.
Theres an unmatched magic to watching this. I dont have memories of these but some of the paints and process are intrinsically linked to my early hobby memories. Metal minis are still unequaled. I'm sure half my love of them is from middle school chess club where having a set of triple weight pieces was something of a status symbol.
Space Wolves are my first army, got all of these models back in 1995-1997. This hit me hard with the nostalgia bat! Great work painting them in the original style, so awesome!
I've not painted or played Warhammer 40,000 for decades, but saw your channel and saw this video. I visited a gamesworkshop a last year in January had had a big nostalgia trip with the manager, talking about these models and the old paints. This video has given me a great nostalgia trip. I have a loads of these old models base coated somewhere in my mums house. I need to go find them!!! Thanks for the trip back to my teenage years.

Don't think about things, go with your first thought...Imperial Fists. They are the defenders of Terra and humanity's saviours. Not only that but they are a lovely yellow colour 😀.
This is probably my second favourite video of yours (after the 2nd Ed unboxing). The detail of space wolves and the codex at the start were great, and these guys turned out absolutely amazing.
Gosh, I remember my first space marines being Space Wolves, most of them got "painted", then I ended up collecting Dark Angles, I also remember the heavy weight of the miniatures/models as I had to carry them around for tournaments and friends' places, it was the time of back and shoulder pain, and short lived backpacks :)
I personally just got a complete in box 3rd Ed blood bowl set. I’m thinking about painting the two armies in the classic style because of your videos. So thanks Guy.
Love this series of old school painting projects - Bonus authenticity points for intending to start with the monopose marines then not painting them yet
I entered the hobby on the *cusp* of 3rd edition and grabbed the new Eldar codex, but knew friends who had Space Wolf and Dark Angels, and marveled at the minis. These are true and authentic!
The Grey Hunters in this codex were the first minis I ever tried to paint, and trying to do those yellow shoulder pads was so stressful I didn't paint anything else until 2017.
My brother had beaky RTB01 Rainbow Warriors back in the day. Seeing those got me into 40K and Fantasy. I've always wanted to make a MkVI Forge World army and get them sent off to be commission painted as Rainbow Warriors but I don't play 40K anymore so can't really justify the cost!
I’ve been waiting with baited breath for the next instalment of Retro-hammer. You did not disappoint Guy! Truly fabulous work and Space Wolves that you can be rightfully proud of.
I remember that I always hated the logo transfers. So for space marines I always ended up freehanding the symbols instead. That was some painstaking work for sure.
What a great job. Long fangs were the bane of my Nids and Eldar. What made them really special was the fact they could split fire which everyone takes for granted these days.
something about that music and seeing those old minis, just gets me all goosebumpy and the memories of been 10 in my local GW store come flooding back. For the others go sons of medusa or howling griffons...

Figures turned out freaking awesome! Definitely brings back tons of nostalgia. These paint jobs and the space marine minis in general are what brought me to the hobby in the early to mid 90's. Don't see enough of these old school paint jobs anymore. Huge thumbs up!!
I feel so called out by this video. I'm getting back into the hobby, and while the wolves got me in around 2000, the guard brought me back. I have these models sitting in my shame pile, and you may have just saved them from that ignominy.
I guess these retro vids didn't get many views, but I'm here to say this video and the citadel paints retro painting videos are definitely what got your channel on my radar. I wasn't into Warhammer then but I find the old stuff quite fascinating and I love your recreations of the old styles. It's hard to find content from a cool dude about warhammer history. I hope in the future you do more retro painting/unboxing because it's definitely my favorite warhammer content I think... ever? :)
What an awesome job...and what a huge amount of work. Back in my loyal days and before GW was giving the space marines their most attention, I was playing black templers. Would vote for them.

Would have messed up on so many no matter how many takes i had.
I told myself the same thing
He always seems to be very well prepared to pronounce everything properly.

I was almost super impressed but then he got Benjyo 2456 wrong. Should we do a poll and try to get Guy to read out that list of names again?

Spilling shade paints is a real amateur move, real pros manage to throw an open bottle of Black Templar on the floor.
this was the reason for my new "no 1 am painting sessions no matter how inspired you feel" rule.
My GF managed to "spill" it on the table-floor-wall-bookshelf and a decoritive expensive semi precious stone. All in one go. The lid was stuck.

You might say that, but if it werent for those walls you'd still be battling ticks in a campfire, cousin. ;)
For The Primarch-Primogenitor!
I'd say you've got to do some Crimson Fists. They're the poster children marines of the early editions.
