- On Abbey Road in London music history was written. In the studios in the St John's Wood district, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr not only recorded 90 percent of their songs - also a famous photograph was taken here: The cover to the album "Abbey Road". What is left of the famous zebra crossing today? And what's the story behind the famous picture?

The "zig zag" markings on a zebra crossing, to indicate where a vehicle may not stop or park, were introduced in 1971. Great video 🙂

In the UK this type of crossing is called a "zebra crossing", not a "crosswalk". There are and have been other types, generically called "pedestrian crossings". Belisha did not invent the globe on the pole, but they were named after the politician Hore-Belisha who was the Minister of Transport when pedestrial crossings with them were first introduced in the 1930s. The zebra stripes came later in the 1950s.
I think the crossing was probably moved a few feet towards the junction at some time since the photo. It's ironic that the belisha beacons that are listed aren't even the ones that were in place in 1969.

You didn’t mention the fact that the original Volkswagen Beetle is in a museum in your home country, Wolfsburg!
I would like to give credit to the photographer who took the most iconic picture of The Beatles. His name was Iain MacMillan and he was a Scottish photographer from the city of Dundee, he moved to London to find work and he became friends with Yoko Ono after photographing her with a piece of her art work she was exhibiting at a gallery in London. Yoko introduced him to John Lennon and through their friendship John had invited him to come to Abbey Road and take the photos. He used a wide angle lens to exaggerate the perspective of the white stripes, but crucially he was also standing on top of quite a high step ladder to get that distinctive perspective looking down along the street, if you study the photo carefully you can realise he took the photo from a high viewpoint and not from simply standing at ground level..so another reason why tourists who want to re-create the image can never quite match the angle. Iain MacMillan born Dundee Scotland 1938.....died Dundee Scotland in 2006 aged 67.

Well, technically, the Internet did exist in 1969. Back in 1962, the ARPAnet was invented as a way to ensure long-distance communication
would still be possible between computers if more regular networks had become incapacitated during a potential conflict with the Soviet Union.
And by 1969, 4 computers were, in fact, communicating with each other. All 4 of them university computers.
So, not exactly the Internet as we know it today, but the technology behind it already existed at the time of "Paul is dead".
Love the VW Beetle on the cover as an Easter egg to the beatles, can't be a coincidence.
If you look at street view from the junction side it has been replaced with a Trabant.
Well done for finding the right zebra crossing! I was in the area a couple of years ago and tried to find it. If you look at Google maps the 'location' is marked, and there is a zebra crossing - but it is nothing like the Beatles one!
I've looked again - and it's at the other end of Abbey Road! And Google have also marked this one. I can't think why, but I could have just walked further. OK, that's still on the bucket list. I should add that I live a couple of hours away by train, so hardly a great adventure getting there.
As for danger using the crossing I'd dispute this. Yes, drivers in London are very impatient, but as a rule it's always safe to cross zebras in this country. You just need to make your intention clear that you are about to cross and drivers will stop. It's the idiots that hover at the side of the road that infuriates me if I'm driving. Abbey Road seems to have more than most, which may explain the accidents there.
"Crosswalk" is not a word in English as spoken in its home country. This is a "zebra crossing" (with a short E), which is a special type of "pedestrian crossing", or even just "crossing".

Busy road, but the traffic was stopped by the police for the photo shoot. The VW would have been within the zig-zags today, but it was parked illegally anyway with wheels on the pavement.
There should have been more focus on that waltzed waggon beetle seen in the picture on the left who owns this car ? does it even still exist t? and what would that car be worth today. I would guess it would be worth a bob or 2 lol
It is not a 'crosswalk', it is a pedestrian crossing.
It's the same thing. Crosswalk is American English.

Sorry to disagree, but your photo clearly shows that the crossing has moved. The people on the left in your photo are in the same place as the Volkswagen. The crossing was closer to the studios. I have a friend who lives just a little further along the road who confirmed that it is not the same crossing. The Beatles tour guide is simply perpetuating myths.
Still a good video in most ways.
This is NOT a cross walk, we do not have cross walks here in the UK, we have our own names for them thank you very much so don't be Yankifying our country!
