  • ABBEY ROAD LONDON - What's it like to cross the famous Beatles Zebra Crossing?
The Beatles made Abbey Road studios in London famous by taking a walk across the zebra crossing on the street outside for a photo and things have gone crazy since!
On August 8, 1969, on a street in north-west London and almost directly outside a celebrated recording studio Abbey Road Studios, one of the most famous ever album covers was shot. Photographer Iain MacMillan took the photograph that would adorn the cover of the brilliant new record named after the street where he stood, Abbey Road.
You can find the Abbey Road Beatles location in St John's Wood, in north west London. This pretty area is north west of Regent's Park and south of Hampstead, and includes plenty of cafes, restaurants and Lord's Cricket Ground. Although The Beatles are from Liverpool, there is no official Abbey Road Liverpool crossing.
Abbey Road is a thoroughfare in the borough of Camden and the City of Westminster in London running roughly northwest to southeast through St John's Wood near Lord's Cricket Ground. It is part of the road B507.
Abbey Road was created in 1829 from an existing farm track called Abbey Lane as part of the development of St John's Wood. Its name derived from the nearby presence of Kilburn Priory.
The Abbey Road studios and the Abbey Road Crossing are firmly linked with the band The Beatles. Tensions over management, finances and Yoko Ono's constant presence strained the band. Sensing the end could be near, The Beatles decided to go all out on a swan song album. They reunited with producer George Martin and began working in the summer of 1969 on what would become “Abbey Road.”
It was a fitting way to pay homage to the then-known EMI Studios which they had spent the majority of their careers-the famous Abbey Road Studios. The image was largely dictated by laziness on the band's part.
Although the Beatles Abbey Road crossing in London is a tourist attraction of sorts, it's also a busy road with local commuters.
The cover for The Beatles' album Abbey Road is an image that is instantly recognizable. Four people (usually), belonging to the same group, cross a road single file. If the author is really showing their work, they will be crossing to the right, in this sequence: dressed in a white suit, dressed in a black suit, dressed in a dark blue suit, and entirely in blue denim.
Whomever is third in line will be barefoot and walking off-step from the others (and, for extra points, will be holding a cigarette or pencil in their right hand). The one in front wearing white will have their hands stuffed in their pockets. For bonus points, there will be a 1960s Volkswagen Beetle and a man walking a dog in the background.

I heard the album the second day it was out - a classmate from school told me his older brother bought the album and invited a few of us over to hear it for the first time - its not like today - where you could hear it before its release - so i did not know what to expect -- i was literally mesmerized by each song as the album played and i found myself being drawn closer and closer to the speaker of the record player - the sounds were so rich, so full, cinematic in scope - it was breath taking from the very first listen - i have never forgotten how i felt when i heard it that day for the first time. Amazing how i forgot most of my life's experiences - but a handful still resonate with me and this was one of them. Long live THE BEATLES !

Cool, I remember when Zeppelin’s “Physical Graffiti” came out in ‘75, my friends, and I ran home after school to hear it in its entirety on K94 fm in Virginia Bch. Remember when they played uninterrupted albums on fm? Anyway…Great story.

I was just there this past March 2022. It was not busy because tourist season had not started. We waited until a few people crossed and took pictures and then our guide took a picture of us crossing. Very exciting since I am such a huge Beatles fan. We also went to the Abby Studios Beatles shop. But the best Beatles shop is in London on Baker St. I bought a bunch of nice souvenirs there. Also went to the train station were they filmed A Hard Days Night. That was a very special day.

In 1946, there was a 6 ft wall between the In and Out gateways of the studios, and the bus stop was situated between two. My mother used to drag me onto the 53 or 153 bus, aided my a friendly commissionaire employed by studios, to take me to kindergarten school in Boundary Road. I don’t think there was a zebra crossing in those days, maybe just a studied crossing? and of course before the Beatles and graffiti!

Just returned from a business trip to London (October of '22) and asked my cab driver to stop off at Abbey Road on the way to Heathrow. He warned me in advance that the street was now blocked off to vehicular traffic, but that he could stop just before the barrier and I could walk past the building to get a souvenir snap. Driver kindly offered to take a photo of me in the cross-walk (where folks were already lined up to take turns at 10 a.m.) but I told him just seeing the building was all the pilgrimage necessary. Was it worth it to run up the meter on the cab for an extra ten minutes? You bet it was!! A must for a Beatle fan, if you are in London.

Bought the album when I was 14, half a century ago. Though a Londoner, have never been there so the video leading up to the Actual Crossing was enlightening...
Signs of the times 1969: VW beetle, park on the kerb, no unsightly yellow lines or zig-zags. More trees.
Nowadays: graffiti, vans everywhere, constant traffic, selfie-sticks.
Always, the Crossing and Abbey Road. 👣

Did it in March ‘84. We planned to take a tour of the studio that day, but we’re informed that tours were canceled, as Duran Duran were recording. There was no shop back then, however the security guy gave me about 7 pages of Abbey Road stationary. I gave several away to friends, but still have two sheets stuffed in my Beatles Anthology book. By the way, that is one busy intersection. Be careful if you ever make a pilgrimage there. I became a Beatles fan in ‘68, when I was 6.

Thanks for this brilliant video. I like how steady it is as you walk. I wondered if this was shot using your iphone 12 Pro Max, GoPro Hero 9 or the Osmo Pocket 2? I want to upgrade and wondered what you would recommend? Thank you for any assistance.

We *JUST got back from London and this was a mistake see. We went twice. My wife didn’t see the point. I get it. The art museum. 😂. We did this exact walk. This is amazing! Love the background music too.
Start recording these in Vision Pro. The iPhone 15 Pro records it. It will be to the viewer like they are there! Yes, brand new and in its infancy. Start now. In a few years, you’ll have an awesome library. 😊

Sorry to burst everyone's bubble but that isn't the same crossing that they walked across in 1969. It was moved/repainted in the early 80s as part of Traffic Maintenance work. The original zebra crossing was outside no.3 Abbey Road,so for a truly authentic Beatles experience might I suggest dodging the traffic outside there!

I'm amazed at the number of people in the comments saying the same thing, when it's obvious by comparing photos that the crossing has not moved. Certainly it's been repainted many times, so it might have shifted by a few inches back and forth, but it's still where it was in 1969. I can point you to a book with a photo of the crossing taken in 1989 from the same vantage point as the album cover that clearly shows it's where it was then and where it is today.

There is a well-known guy, Richard Porter, who has been a tour guide there for years and recently made a video, explaining that the crosswalk is in the same place. I don't know and it seems secondary to me.

Very nice video...You said previously that you captured this with an IPHONE 13 and nothing else. I can't see anything during daylight on the phone I use (Samsung Note - too dark and lots of reflections) Are the IPHONES much better?

I must have crossed on those zebras a million times, and another million cursed the tourists when driving, I used to live 10 minutes walk from it. God knows how many licks of paint on those walls over the years, actually it looked quite clean on the footage.
To get the perfect angle/point of view for the iconic picture you have to step almost in the middle of the road, the original was taken extremely early in the morning on a long British summer day.
The replica picture contest was definitely won by Red Hot Chilli Peppers, all bare naked just wearing a white sock over their bits.

If you sit and “people watch” for a while it’s amazing to see how many cross and then walk onwards for a while before , once out of sight , doubling back on themselves to do it again and again….
It’s like they are making a statement that they really need to cross over and get on with their busy lives unlike everybody else doing the embarrassing tourist schlap walk ….

Not a crossing. THE crossing. A symbol of modern popular culture. The Beatles leave their legendary recording studio, will not return for another record and at the same time end the spectacular 1960s. Also, the crosswalk cover contains "evidence" of the "Paul is dead" legend. A conspiracy theory about which people still make long UA-cam videos today... I interpret the walk, that millions of people have reenacted over the past few decades, as a kind of note of thanks for the "Fab Four" and their work.
In addition, it seems to be great fun for many, to position themselves on the crossing, preferably in a row of four. And not a few make their own versions, show a stunt, walk particularly conspicuously, lie down, jump, whatever. One also sometimes see people, who just got married or people in special clothes. All of this has somehow developed into its own art form, which can be very entertaining.
