The EU's "most dangerous Border Area"
The Suwalki Gap is a small strip of the European Union that lies like a sandwich between Russia's exclave Kaliningrad and Belarus. Some people call the place the "most dangerous border area in the EU" - because the Suwalki Gap is considered a geographical weak point for NATO. In this video I take a trip through the border area with Russia, discover many relics of the past and show life along the barbed wire fences.

Sinking of the MS Estonia: What happened in the Baltic Sea?
It is one of the worst shipping disasters of all time - and one of the most mysterious. On September 28, 1994, the car ferry MS Estonia sank in the middle of the Baltic Sea. The reasons for the tragedy with 852 deaths have not yet been fully explained. What happened on the high seas that night 30 years ago? A journey to the place where the Estonia set sail - and where it should have arrived. A ...
Why Germans hate Subtitles
If you turn on the TV in the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and many other European countries, English-language films and series are most likely broadcast in the original language with added subtitles. In my home country, Germany, however, things are completely different: Europe's largest voice acting industry has developed here - and almost every film and series is meticulously translated into G...
Why Walmart failed in Europe
The US supermarket chain Walmart is the most successful company in the world. But it also has a problem: its concept works particularly well in the United States of America, where it was invented - in Europe, however, a planned expansion failed miserably around 20 years ago. Why? Let's find out. A film by Matthias Schwarzer Sources for the video: Why Walmart failed in Germany (Spiegel, German l...
The Village that lies in two Countries
There is an unusual village on the German-Dutch border. Or rather: two villages? In fact, you can't really tell - because the state border runs directly along the village street. On one side the houses are Dutch, on the other German. And if you don't pay close attention, you won't even notice which country you are in. Time to take a closer look at this curiosity. A film by Matthias Schwarzer. D...
Why you should never park under this Skyscraper
The British capital London is known for its historic buildings. In recent years, however, new skyscrapers have been changing the skyline. One of them is in the city's financial district. The so called "Walkie-Talkie" building is infamous for its curved design and its sky garden. However, the futuristic high-rise has sparked discussions for another reason. Shortly after its construction, unusual...
Why US Trucks have a "Nose" (and European ones don't)
You see them in films, in music videos - and of course live on the streets in the USA: huge trucks, significantly larger and longer than those in Europe. And another design element is characteristic of the trucks in the US: the long hood in front of the driver's cab. Why do US trucks have a “snout” - and European ones don’t? A film by Matthias Schwarzer. Sources for the video: Why US trucks hav...
Why McDonald's is green in Europe but red in the US
There was a time when McDonald's restaurants all over the globe basically looked the same. And when you saw the huge red and yellow M logo you always knew what to expect. Today the situation is different: In Europe McDonald's buildings look like cafes today - no longer like fast food restaurants. And the company also changed its brand design in many countries: Instead of red and yellow McDonald...
Why Americans don't use WhatsApp (and why that's a Problem)
Around 58 million people in my home country Germany use the messenger WhatsApp. The app has replaced what once used to be the SMS text message: almost everyone who owns a smartphone can also be reached via the WhatsApp messenger. But in the USA things are different: Meta's app never really caught on here - even though it was an American invention. And this development also brings some problems ...
Why there's an abandoned Ghost Town in Belgium
There is a small village in the north of Belgium. Doel is its name, and at first glance it is a town like any other: it has a church, a cemetery, a historic windmill - and a nuclear power plant right next to it. But in fact, Doel is anything but normal: Doel is a ghost town. Most of the houses are run down and abandoned - and almost nobody lives here anymore. How did that happen? A film by Matt...
Why Sweden is so damn good at Pop Music
Sweden is the only country besides the US and the UK that exports more music than it imports. Legendary bands like ABBA, Roxette and Ace of Base come from the small country in the north. The successful songwriter Max Martin wrote all the big hits of the nineties, DJ Avicii was also Swedish. And even the most successful streaming service Spotify was invented here. Why is this country so incredib...
How to switch a Country from left-hand Traffic to right-hand Traffic
Did you know that Sweden used to drive on the left? In fact, this traffic system existed until the late 1960s - which led to all sorts of problems. So on September 3, 1967, all traffic was switched to right-hand traffic from one day to another. But how do you do something like that? Let's find out. A film by Matthias Schwarzer. Many thanks to the National Library of Sweden for allowing me to us...
How a small German Village killed Google Street View
Google Street View exists since 2007 and is available today on almost every phone and in almost every European country. Only in Germany the situation is different: Here you will find huge blank spots on the map and only recordings that are up to 15 years old. How did that happen? Turns out: There is a quite funny story behind it, that I'm gonna tell you in today's video. A film by Matthias Schw...
Why the Windows XP Meadow no longer exists
"Bliss" by Charles O'Rear is probably one of the most famous photos in the world. It shows a bright blue sky and a green meadow - its perfection and simplicity made the picture the default wallpaper of Windows XP. Why the Netherlands have a Biking Culture (and other Countries don't)
The Netherlands are full of bikes. In fact there are more bicycles in the Netherlands than residents - and in huge cities like Groningen, Utrecht or Amsterdam up to 70% of all journeys are made by bike. So glad that Walmart failed in Europe!! ! We have more than enough supermarkets and Walmart can never compete against ALDI,LIDL,NORMA,REWE AND EVEN EDEKA! Thank God!!!!
I hope you didn’t got a strike of YT because of singing that song I want to ride my bike 🚴 😂.
Did u know: there is chineae YouMart in Serbia 😂 But they are doing “well” :)
Wōllmaart
As a European... wait there was Walmart in Europe???!
The eagerness to close this case has caused people to get the impression that someone are hiding something. This in turn spawn speculation. As such, now, thirty years later, people are still not satisfied with any conclusions offered.
I used to live in Europe 2002-2010 and now back in Indonesia the past 14 years. The older I get the more I realise food and beverages in Europe, etc are so disgustingly unhealthy, no wonder cancer is so common there. No wonder Indonesians in big cities are the same overweight, they're following bad footsteps.
So, walmart failed because they were too friendly? Lol. I remember changing plains in Munich. Germans were so unfriendly i felt like with nazi in 1941. You cannot argue - for every word they wanted call police. Germany is terrible
Don't you have any pride in your appearance? Get a shave or something.
Terrible company, go to Russia if you want to stop employees to join union and pay them as low as possible. Indeed, most Europeans don`t like big packaging and like quality foods. Also, not everybody shops with a car so for a shopper with no car, carrying big packages will be a bad experience. Big portions, big packaging … that’s why obesity rate in USA is so high. If I want electronics I can go to a specialized shop where they have more choices and better quality, same for clothes. And indeed, fake polite it’s kind of creepy for us, but we appreciate a smile when it`s the case if it`s honest not forced …
Why no homage to the stunning cobblestone streets? When were they installed? Who keeps them up? Do they frost heave in winter? Missed opportunity.
A few clarifications: the whole "green bubble exclusion" thing only applies to people under 23 and has largely devolved into a joke at this point. This video is taking this weird phenomenon much too seriously. As the video points out, iMessenger adopted RCS anyway in Sept 24 so the issue will be moot going forward. Secondly, the video should make it more clear that none of these issues have ever existed for Android users in the US. The base Messenger app in Android is fully modern. The entire issue stems from Apple's characteristic and irritating love of proprietary Apple experiences. I've found that most groups of people who want to stay in touch in the US resort to using WhatsApp or GroupMe anyway.
Europeans want fresh produce and not as much highly processed garbage, which means shopping more frequent in shops close by. We simply don’t need or want the bulk shopping outlets they have in the US.
I am at 6:00 in teh video -- it looks like any Tesco to me 🙂
Les européens n'aiment pas la nouveauté
Very good video but.. U didn't show PL/Bielorus border and didn't mention about hybrid warfare against Poland and all EU/NATO, I mean illegal migrants problem created by Bielorus.
I did. Watch again from 28:45. And there will be another video about the Belarusian border soon.
Video interessante, bravo!
Super interesting video. Thanks for making it. A It is also great that you do not use a lot of stock videos, but your own b-rolls.
No wonder that the only place in the world where life expectancy is going down,is the united states of america.
American business can’t get it’s head around the fact that other countries act & behave differently to them. They don’t seem to research the market they are entering & just expect everyone to behave like Americans, which of cause they don’t, to the amazement of the Americans.
Thats why you respect the countries culture.
Lunchables 🤮
While being in Germany, we particularly liked KARSTADT, which also isn't the same (GALERIA) any more. Greetings from Budapest by an Ungarndeutscher... 🙂
In Nordic’s Starbucks can suck it XD
In Germany no foreign company works.
Walmart is the Scientology of supermarket chains. Very creepy company.
Oh yeah. One word. Cringe. I've seen it even here. Welcome'ers at the entrance. Blinking heck. Why not change it with security guards and I want to see your receipt on the way out. I'm here to buy stuff. In, get my stuff on the list, pay for it and out. If I need help, I'll ask for it! I do not want to be bothered with anything else!
Actually the high water mark would be the Border, not down at the water's edge
Here in Denmark we prefer small supermarkets with a limited supply, but instead there are everywhere so we don't need to go very far. Our fridges are not very large, so we often refill. The large supermarkets are preferred for people who don't have a local supermarket near by
I would not chant Walmart if is the last job available on earth .
Walmart failed here and not in USA is because of 1 thing in my opinion. And that is because laws for your employers are far more strikt and humane in Europe. In the US they prey on their workforce and use them without respect.
Walmart in Mexico is much smaller, still big but it reminds me highly of "Real" in Germany But even they are out of business now. Also Walmart in Mexico is not more friendly than any other store. I don't know why "Real" died but with a concept like in Mexico it could work it Germany. It did in the past Ohh you said it at the end, Walmart stores became Real. Now it makes sense why they're so similar. Interesting. Maybe then this system just really doesn't work in Germany.
I guess the door-zone cycle lanes are on the German side
"Welcome to wallmart, i love you"
So exactly like Auchan
dude its such BS you have to buy 100g of plastic to get 150g of cheese, like its so stupid packaging in EU... got to buy 7 packs to get 1 pack of cheese i would in the states
There’s carrefour - an evil twin
i’m also from Europe i’m not a fan of supermarkets there’s specific places for food furniture car stuff and everything i rather shop like than when i need something that spend hours waking around to find something specific in a supermarket…xD
cutie Lidl sitting in the corner lol
The difference comes from how America is built. In Europe everything is focused around city centers, you can literally everywhere walk or get by public transportation, you can do shopping even every day. In US, car companies wanted to earn as much as possible, so they lobbied against public transportation, etc. As a result US has terrible public transport, most people live in less dense areas, shop maybe once a week, and in such situation large "hypermarkets" like walmart make sense there. In Europe there are also "hypermarkets" like Auchan has a network of them in many countries, but they aren't as popular. Why drive to the edge of city, curse traffic jams near city exits, when I can do 99% of my shopping in Lidl few steps from me, and the remaining 1% online?
it's true, why I didn't notice that before ?
Of course they failed, Americans love being fake, Europeans hate it.
@@AnOldFashionedWoman what the fuck is fake about Walmart ? Lol
In the 90’s, in my state in the US, I was given my learners permit at 14. As long as I also took drivers education, I was able to get my license to drive a normal car at 15 with absolutely no restrictions. Now of course one has to be 16 and must drive x hours with a licensed adult. Absolutely crazy they allowed us to drive on roads and freeways so young.
