    Two things I would suggest. One is the pin, for most people might not be as easy to take out and put back. So it might be helpful to tie a thread around it to make sure you don't accidentally let it fall inside the walls. Second, it could help before putting the plate back to turn the water on to make sure nothing is leaking before trying to seal and put everything back at that point.

      @23chnge I heard in another similar video someome suggested it because he lost one behind the wall and had to go buy a new one.

      The turning on the water to check for leaks before reinstalling everything is a must! Especially with these setups where the valve is behind the wall and leaks will drip behind the wall. Some modern cartridges have the connection nut further out and any drips will drip into the bathtub/shower.

      lost my pin many times trying to get it in, but luckily for me, I have access from closet to back of tub. Never thought of tying a string. Great idea for those with no access.

    I'm a person who is constantly training laboratory personnel, and you have a gift for teaching, sir. Thank you so much for making this so easy to follow and learn!
    To quote Albert Einstein: "If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't understand it yourself."
    You've made it so rudimentary and explainable that even a dummy like me when it comes to plumbing can understand it!

  • @Francesca123421

    Very nice video. Straightforward & seemed simple enough. Only problem when I got to removing the old cartridge I tried the channellock tool as well as the cartridge remover tool combined with channellock. Our cartridge was super jammed into the valve.
    Not wanting to cause any damage to the pipes, I admitted defeat & called a plumber to finish the job.
    I just want people to be aware that things may not be as easy as they appear in videos. And obviously the video looks like it was made with all new parts, not a screw that has some soap scum build-up and a plate and cartridge that have been in use for ten years or however long, and won’t come out as easily as brand new parts. Even the plumber struggled to get it out & the plastic on the cartridge was breaking off in the process.
    Thanks for the video. It did seem simple enough. I do believe if the cartridge was not jammed in so tightly I could’ve done it all by myself.

    This video was super helpful. I did have to go rent the tool to remove the old cartridge and it was still difficult to remove. Lots of breaks, muscle and Perseverance got me through. Also had trouble getting the clip in, but found that if i tried pushing the cartridge in more, even though it was tight, helped with getting the pin in. Finally I was over the worst of it. All in all, as a female, I was proud of not giving in to call a plumber. A new skill under my belt thanks to this super informative video. Thank you for your thorough lesson in plumbing.

    Thank you! I completed the job! Removing the old cartridge was no easy feat, but with a little pushing, pulling, wiggling, and a lot of patience, I got it out. The rest was very straightforward. As presented in the video, I do recommend applying the silicone gel on the new cartridge. It slides in much easier.

    I did it! Thank you!! I struggled for an hour to get the old cartridge out. And once it was out I could see why. The rubber had disintegrated and jammed the unit from the inside. Even with the tool it was brutal to remove. But once the freshly lubed replacement was installed it worked perfectly. Thank you!!

      would you mind sharing any tips for removing it? i’m looking into replacing mine on my own and with my luck i’ll have the same struggle as you but i’m not very handy so I might get discouraged if it’s difficult

    • @TimTkachyk
      @TimTkachyk 2 роки тому +5

      @Evelyn Lugo I honestly don’t have any real technical tips, but what I can confidently say is that you simply must persevere once you get started! I was very reluctant to take this task on, because I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to figure it out, or complete it correctly. I generally have pretty low confidence in my own abilities, so maybe we’re similar in that way? I was very worried that once I shut off our water line, and started the process I wouldn’t be able to finish, and thus we’d have no water in the house.
      So really, with all that pressure on myself and the situation, it forced me to be extremely determined to succeed. My cartridge was EXTREMELY stuck, with bits of rubber jammed far inside the pipe. I had to pull at it and work it out over the course of over an hour. It was exhausting. However once this was accomplished the replacement was SO easy to install.
      Please also keep in mind: Yours may possibly not be nearly as stuck as mine was!

      For the people who struggled getting that piece out. Next time, bring vinegar to a boil, and pour that into an industrial sprayer that can take the heat. I recommend wearing dishwashing gloves, eye protection and a mask. Or, put the vinegar in a container and brush it on. Keep it wet with vinegar for about 5 minutes. It works.

      @@ccatdaddy64 I wish I had read all the comments before starting this. My cartridge was so jammed and I struggled so much that I finally called a plumber to finish it. I just didn’t feel my son or I had the strength to get it out and I didn’t want to risk damaging the pipes in the process. Wish I’d have seen this sooner. Thanks for the tip.

    This is a fantastic video! However, I have one additional thing to add. Lol! I had to fix this same issue in my daughters bathroom about 6 months ago. I never saw your video back then but wish I did since it's more detailed than the ones I watched. I was successful fixing the shower but what I never heard anyone suggest in the videos was when turning the water back on to make sure to turn another faucet on to prevent pressure. It caused our hot water heater to take the force and began leaking from the inside. I was told by the plumber that replaced our hot water heater that's what caused it. I hope he was being honest with me. Lol

    Good instructions. I guess too we would have to find out what type of cartridge we have, and if putting the pieces back together would be different. I guess also there instructions on the new cartridge. Also, it may be only certain parts on the cartridge that need replacing and not the whole cartridge itself. I saw another video where she replaced the springs with their covers and the O rings only, but did make mention of changing the whole cartridge if needed.

      @HowToHomeDIY  2 роки тому

      Yes that is true, it may or may not fix the leaking issue by replacing those parts. I don't know if the person you are referring to also acknowledges that the cartridge oftentimes at that point is also going bad. It would be impossible to say how much more time you might get out of the cartridge itself before replacing it as over time it is going bad itself and is often noticed by more resistance when turning the handle. With a new cartridge it spins very freely. Just something to keep in mind. Thanks a lot for all of the feedback!

    Thank you so much! I found it to be much more difficult than it looked but got it done thanks to you! It cost me $70 for the cartridge silicone and the tool to loosen the cartridge. That seems so expensive considering you could buy a new shower head and faucet fixture for $149.

      It is the cartridge causing the leak, either way requires replacing it. A new handle and shower head will not seal the leaky cartridge

      The toughest part for a lot of people will be cutting into the wall where you have the water cut off valves. Then you got to patch that up. I can't believe we can put men on the moon but we still have to cut into the wall to fix a simple bathtub leak.
