This worked for me after having my shower not be able to turn off for seven days. (It took me two days to figure out how to turn off the main water supply for Hot AND cold water.) One suggestion: I’ve watched many videos for this specific problem with the Moen bath handle. None of the videos say what Allen wrench size key you need. It’s 7/64”. Please add that to the description to save us time and effort. I have so many different sizes of Allen wrenches but I did not have that size which costed me two trips to the hardware store before a thorough Google search. Allen wrench key size needed: 7/64”. Thank you! 😊
You save my time and money a lot because I was ready to open my dry wall thinking there might be a leaking. Great job and explanation. Thank you very much
Hello... how do I get cold water to come out of the faucet in the shower all I get is hot water in the shower turn it to get the cold water the hotter it gets I don't understand what's going on what's going on can you please give me some tips.
Great video, but the tip in the comments about using a hairdryer, saved me the 20 minutes that you spent struggling to pull it out. I really appreciated that you named the part number; Amazon had it here in a few days.
This makes so so much sense thank you!! Our actual handle wasn’t on the cartridge very well at all. Eventually it just wouldn’t turn and it would fall off constantly. Eventuality it wouldn’t go back on or turn it and so we had to use a vice grip to take showers or baths. I think eventually the tool damaged the cartridge piece cause now it’s only hot, like steaming hot and hurts bad hot lol
Good video, definitely got me going in the right direction. My cartridge also wouldn't budge and I also destroyed the little plastic tool that came with the new valve. So I tried the hair dryer trick, no luck. So back to the big box store (Lowe's), bought the Moen core puller for about $15. Got the old cartridge out in about 2 minutes and was all done within 5 minutes from that point. My recommendation is to buy the core puller when you buy the cartridge because you will probably need it but if not, just return it next time your at Lowe's or wherever you bought it from.
The trouble you had getting that out was SO realistic for how these things really go when you get in there. Good work. I have a mixer valve that 's bad but I need to get in there to look and confirm what's what.
Our shower valve was stuck and we didn't have the tool, but by accident found a way to get it out without any effort. We had taken off the shower head and put an end cap on it since it was leaking some water and turned the main water valve back on to do laundry. In just a few minutes the stuck shower valve was pushed out by the water pressure (the retaining clip was removed). Just have some one ready to turn off the water supply when it comes out.
Thanks. I had the same symptoms and replacing the cartridge on my delta shower faucet got it working again. I've never seen anyone else show these symptoms. Also I put the new cartridge upside down and I was wondering why I had pressure but no hot water and then remembered your video saying to turn it around if that's the problem.
Thank you for the instruction in this video. This was the problem in the master shower. I had to call upon Jesus to pull that cartridge out, man it was in there. This saved me allot of money by not having to call the plumber.
Thanks! I was tempted to edit out the struggle, but I'm glad I didn't as you're not the first to say they were glad to see what issues may come up. Thanks for watching and leaving a kind comment :)

Great video as I have same faucet but mine was a nightmare. Due to our hard water the cartridge would not budge. And while barely pulling the metal piece that sticks out broke off which left nothing to pull on. Drilled out the metal center of from the that broke off and screwed in a coarse screw to give me something to pull on. Tried al the tricks I could find and nothing worked. I had to carefully drill out the plastic all around and the the middle metal part came out and that had to chip out the rest of the plastic as is was basically welded to the pipe. It gets worse when the brass cartridge breaks off entirely. I had the pleasure of drilling a hole into the center of the spool and driving in a 3/8 tap, then pulling that out with the use of pb blaster and a torch on the valve body. Great valve when its not stuck!
Some Moen tub faucets have a Moen remote pressure balancing valve with a moving-piston assembly inside. The piston got stuck and there was almost no hot water. BRRR. It was fairly easy to remove the piston assembly and clean it. Replacement assemblies are also available at a reasonable price. The purpose of the pressure balancing valve is to keep the shower temperature constant if someone else starts using hot or cold water while you are in the shower. If this is the cause of low water flow, working on the shower valve core (as shown) will not solve the problem. I'm posting this comment to help others.

I'm wondering if soaking it in CLR overnight or something would help as Im not able to get to a store as we are at a remote location... thanks everyone!
Our problem was a bit different. From operating normally to you either get ice cold water or scalding hot, there was no middle ground (no mixing). And the gandle also seemed to be loosening. It came off in my hand today (the attaching screw went somewhere, but then my son said it happened to him a few days earlier but didn't bother to say anything to me). I'm hoping it's the screw issue, but something tells me it's the mixer.
great video! thank you. What could be the problem with my single handle shower knob that it doesn’t have a stopping point? you can twist it to turn it on, and you can twist it to turn it off, but if you twist too far, it just goes on again …. you can keep twisting! So you have to very very carefully and specifically twist it to the “stopping point” and it’s hard to get it just right! This is crazy making! Everyone knows the handle should just twist to an Off position and stop automatically. Do you have a cartridge problem??!!
I may be the valve but there's often a plastic ring that's visible right after you remove the handle. It is the piece that usually limits the rotation of the handle. In your case it sounds like it may have been installed incorrectly, or is broken. Remove just the faucet handle and see what things look like just behind it. It may be an easy fix or require a replacement plastic piece.
After you place the retaining clip, wall plate, silver sleeve, turn on the water... (the white and black caps not yet installed) try to turn the knob clock-wise to the point water turns -off. Now put the white cap aligned with the silver sleeve. Now this is the solution part. Place the outer black plastic cap such that that screw hole is facing down not up. The screw hole side of the black cap does not need to be align to the white cap. (this was my mistake before) This way, when you screw the handle pointing down (the hole of the handle is facing down and so with the hole of the black cap is also facing down). When installed, the handle is facing down position and the water is off position as well. Yes, I agree you can twist the metal part over and over as if there is no stopping point. But when the white cap when installed, that white cap is in fix position. When last black plastic cap is installed and screwed, it has stopping point when you rotate it.
@@42Pursuit Yeah. Then my really old master shut off valve started leaking after I used it and tried to flood my basement. That was quite the weekend. All good now. Still thanks!
Wow, thanks. I need to try this tomorrow. Our bath faucet all of sudden is very hard to shut off. Also, I have another bathtub but this one has two valves, all of sudden when I turn on the hot water it barely comes out but cold water comes out really nicely. Do you have any idea why? Thanks.
Hmm, not sure but it sounds like some sort of blockage to happen quickly like that. Sometimes hard water minerals will build up and then release as a clump.
It worked for me too but, the same issue came back. Now i have to replace the cartridge again and its only been 3 months. Could there be another reason ? Thank you!
Im, having the same problem , but my faucet does not have brand name looks exactly like this Moen but dont know howcto buy the cartridge any help will apreciate thx
Since these valves can go bad over a short time It would be wise to get the extraction tool made for these valves. Also for replacing the valve it isn't necessary to remove the plate as this will hold the inside valve body in place. And always make sure to use the lubricant made for these valves and never Vaseline or oil products. Believe me I have dealt with these valves in two homes I have and Moen can really make a simple DIY project a real job. Thats why they are called MOOOEN!!!!! You grunt while working them out!!!
What great video .....I 66 yrs old and don't know much PLUMBING.....have 66 yr old. house .I think this might be my problem...Whe I TAKE shower the hot water takes over ....I sometime reluctant to fix things cause these things are meant to last MY al.9st got hernia trying to get .y shower head off .....Just waiting 4 my younger plumber to fix.
Any advice on a faucet that performs as such from left to right - off, hot, warm, hot, off? Pressure is fine throughout. Think this could be a potential fix? I'd really like to be able to finish my showers with cold water.
Does the handle spin 360 degrees around or does it stop at the end before it makes it all the way around? If it doesn't stop at the end or it stops really far around it may be an end-stop issue. Check the white plastic pieces that are typically right behind the handle. Pull them apart and rotate one a few notches and see if that does anything. It also sounds like hot and cold are backwards which is an easy fix by pulling out and rotating the mixer core 180 degrees and then reinstalling it.
My shower is to hot both cold and hot water work but trying to get it not to hot is impossible. My faucet has the clear plastic handle and it doesn’t have the white plastic piece I’ve seen others adjust. Any help would be appreciated
There's only a few variations out there, and with a little bit of research you can generally figure out which one is in your faucet. You may have to take off the handle and cover to see what the mixer assembly looks like, and I bet if you take a picture of it and show someone that works in a home-store plumbing department they can point you in the right direction.
I kept wondering when the vice-grips would come into play! "You'd think I'd remember the name of this tool by now!" To be fair, ,Channel locks are probably one of the most important tools in a toolkit, no matter what you call them! But... If you'd latched on to that stem with vice-grips, pretty sure that thing would have come out. Your stem would be ruined but you replaced that anyway.
What do you have our channel locks not vice grips? I’m just saying so people don’t get confused and asked for them at the hardware store. Vice grips lock but yeah if you have a dryer heater gun heat up the cartridge and it should slide right out.
I am experiencing the exact same problem presented in video. Thank you for the presentation; I just hope that I don’t experience the same trouble removing cartridge. LOL On another note, my unit is 17 years old and there is lock on the Moen lever; and I cannot remove with a hex wrench.
Picking up a cartridge removal tool might be worth it. At least to have on hand, and return if you don't need it. What sort of lock on the lever? If it's crusted from hard water, try wrapping a rag soaked in vinegar around it to help dissolve the mineral deposits.
mine does not have the same setting of a catridge, it just got two little valves for hot and cold water and I just turned the hot water valve with a flat screw driver until I got the hot water coming out. For some reasons if I don't use the shower for several months the valve would shut itself off
Hmm, sounds like a bad seal somewhere, perhaps in the mixer valve. I've seen that happen when the o-rings get accidently damaged or folded over when the cartridge is being installed.
@@42Pursuit Thanks so much! I realized the 1222 mixer valve is slightly shorter than the Moen OEM cartridge. Instead of buying a new one, I just ended up putting a stop valve before the shower head which has solved the issue. I really appreciate the quick response!
I have the same faucet and the same problem. I changed the cartridge like you did and problem is not fixed. What else do you think that might causes it?
Hmm, all I can think of is maybe a bad cartridge, or there's some issue with the water supply from either hot or cold, like a blockage or restriction or something upstream from the faucet.
My shower started leaking and at the same time became only hot water. I replaced this valve and it fixed the leak but I still only have hot water. I tried flipping the valve with no luck. Any advice?
The first thing that comes to mind is sometimes the inlet ports can get clogged with hard water minerals or with chunks of o-rings or gaskets as they degrade. These ports are the two slits in the metal housing that the mixer valve is removed from on the left and right and can be somewhat visually inspected with the mixer valve removed. I've sometimes taken a small hook tool or bent piece of metal to poke around and feel if there's anything lodged in the port.
If the set screw can't be moved due to hard water, try soaking it and the surrounding are with vinegar for some time. If it's due to rust, try soaking it with hydrogen peroxide or some penetrating fluid like PB Blaster. If those options don't work, cutting off the handle could work if done carefully. Replacement handles are easy to find as well.
The problem with my shower is if the hot water is running all of a sudden it changes to cold water on its own and versa visa. Will it fix this problem if I change the cartridge?
Thank you for the video! How dangerous is cartridge replacement if I won’t turn off the water? I live in a studio and don’t have access where I can turn water off unfortunately. Do you think I can replace cartridge without turning water off?
Don't do it! The water has to be shut off or once the cartridges removed you'll have a geyser of water coming out that the cartridge used to be blocking. You must turn the water off before the valve or you're going to have a bad time.
I don't believe water pressure is adjustable for this kind of valve. Pressure would have to be increased up-stream from the lines going into the valve body.
Probably not the same problem if every faucet is only warm water. Sounds like a supply issue, I'd trace your hot and cold water lines from the source where it enters your house and see if there's a valve that's turned off or down somewhere.
Do not do what he did Moen makes a removal tool for the cartridge its comes out simple and easy. I'm pretty sure they designed this with that tool in mind if I would have known would have saved me an hour.
There's only a few different ones, and each fit in a different type of fixture. www.moen.com/moen-101/cartridges/standard Some quick googling should get you there pretty quickly. The 1222 valve is standard for single handle Moen shower faucets. I can't speak to other brands.
I noticed the cartridge that you took out has an O-ring and each end. The new cartridge you installed only had the one O-ring at the control end (Knob shaft). Is the second O-ring not necessary?
I assume that they updated the design for some good reason, so I'd say that if your replacement cartridge didn't have the second o-ring that it should be fine.
I saw a perfect tip for cartridges that won't move -- use a hair dryer and warm up the cartridge for 5 minutes. It works!
That's a great tip! Thanks for sharing!

(this was my mistake before)
This way, when you screw the handle pointing down (the hole of the handle is facing down and so with the hole of the black cap is also facing down). When installed, the handle is facing down position and the water is off position as well.
Yes, I agree you can twist the metal part over and over as if there is no stopping point. But when the white cap when installed, that white cap is in fix position. When last black plastic cap is installed and screwed, it has stopping point when you rotate it.
i replaced the cartridge and the problem was instantly and beautifully RESOLVED, thanks everybody !
Thank you
What if there’s not a spot for an allen wrench?
Great job. Now I can go fix mine. Thank you.
Glad you found it helpful!
Thanks so much. Mine just broke today. Btw you are so fine 😊
thanks for this video and the comments. made everything so much easier.
Glad it helped!
I fixed my shower. Thank you!
Excellent! Nice job 👍🏼
All great points! A proper extraction tool would've been really great to have on this swap-out.
Thanks for watchin!
😂
excellent presentation
Thank you kindly!
Thanks for the demonstration. Can you please say, what size Allen key was used? Thanks again
7/64"
@uneicag posted it above
Do I leave my sink faucet open while I turn the main back on?
What size alley w to use been trying to take mine off for 45 min I was told it shouldn’t move maybe mine is stript
Thanks for posting this repair! Big help!!
Excellent! Thats just the way it goes. Nothing is easy.
You got that right!
aww DANG I'M HOOKED, I LOVE THIS STUFF. :) Its fascinating
Pretty cool to see how things work and to learn how to fix stuff, that's for sure :)
Great, how did you find out what cartridge you need for your faucet?.
There's only a few variations out there, and with a little bit of research you can generally figure out which one is in your faucet. You may have to take off the handle and cover to see what the mixer assembly looks like, and I bet if you take a picture of it and show someone that works in a home-store plumbing department they can point you in the right direction.
Thanks for this very helpful!
This is not how you should remove it . Those are not vise grips !! There is a tool for this removal .
your was rhe best, I did have to turn the whole cartridge
Awesome! Glad you found it helpful!
I kept wondering when the vice-grips would come into play!
"You'd think I'd remember the name of this tool by now!"
To be fair, ,Channel locks are probably one of the most important tools in a toolkit, no matter what you call them!
But... If you'd latched on to that stem with vice-grips, pretty sure that thing would have come out. Your stem would be ruined but you replaced that anyway.
Haha, my brain stops working a little bit when a camera is pointed at me. I'm working on it! 😄
@@42Pursuit No worries, I hope I was laughing with you, not at you!
Good job
Thank you so much we had no clue what was going on.
Glad the video helped you out!
mu home is less than 2 years old. 2 of the shower have this problem. would the core be the problem here?
Hmm, hard to tell. Seems like both shouldn't fail that fast but it might be worth replacing one and seeing if that fixes the issue.
What do you have our channel locks not vice grips? I’m just saying so people don’t get confused and asked for them at the hardware store. Vice grips lock but yeah if you have a dryer heater gun heat up the cartridge and it should slide right out.
Ah yes, good catch, I corrected it in the video but I see I missed the first time I said it.
Mine is hard to turn will that fix my problem
Excellent video! Thank you very much
Awesome! Glad you found it helpful!
Nice presentation.
Only one little thing. You're loosing water in the kitchen. You said, leave it open. Go and check ;)
Ah haha, good catch. I eventually figured out where the sound of running water was coming from ;)
Thanks - great video!
mine does not have the same setting of a catridge, it just got two little valves for hot and cold water and I just turned the hot water valve with a flat screw driver until I got the hot water coming out. For some reasons if I don't use the shower for several months the valve would shut itself off
Did this and the temperature works great now but the faucet dribbles constantly. Any ideas?
Thanks for your help. I will be changing the hot/cold water mixer valve and hope that fix’s the problem. Thanks again!
You get a thumbs up cause I thought I was the only one who DIY stuff and things don't go as planned. Hahaha!
Hah, yeah, every project has it's challenges. I'm convinced most videos edit that part out 😄
My shower started leaking and at the same time became only hot water.
I can’t remove the set screw. So how can I remove the handle. I thought about cutting it off, then I have to get a new handle. And idea’s please.
Hmm, not sure. It might be worth a shot.

Thanks
Big thank you !
THANKS. very useful video
Thank you for the video. I have to do that now.
Awesome! Glad you found it helpful!
What if the handle is just hanging there can’t get Allen wrench to even turn
Thank you for the video! How dangerous is cartridge replacement if I won’t turn off the water? I live in a studio and don’t have access where I can turn water off unfortunately. Do you think I can replace cartridge without turning water off?
Don't do it! The water has to be shut off or once the cartridges removed you'll have a geyser of water coming out that the cartridge used to be blocking. You must turn the water off before the valve or you're going to have a bad time.
Is this a serious question?
Nicely done! Thank you.
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful!
Hi guys, mine look’s like moen style but there’s no brand what should I do? I’ll appreciate your help thx
Hard to know for sure. If it looks like a moen there's a good chance the parts will cross over, but it's not guaranteed.
@@42Pursuit thank broo👍🏼
How do you increase the water pressure. I don’t see a hot and cold water control valves
I don't believe water pressure is adjustable for this kind of valve. Pressure would have to be increased up-stream from the lines going into the valve body.
thanks for sharing your information.
My pleasure! Glad you found it helpful!
I get warm water on every faucet. Would it be the same problem or a water heater problem?
Probably not the same problem if every faucet is only warm water. Sounds like a supply issue, I'd trace your hot and cold water lines from the source where it enters your house and see if there's a valve that's turned off or down somewhere.
Do not do what he did Moen makes a removal tool for the cartridge its comes out simple and easy. I'm pretty sure they designed this with that tool in mind if I would have known would have saved me an hour.
How much for this job
Hi, how do i know which model of cartridge i need to buy?
There's only a few different ones, and each fit in a different type of fixture. www.moen.com/moen-101/cartridges/standard
Some quick googling should get you there pretty quickly. The 1222 valve is standard for single handle Moen shower faucets. I can't speak to other brands.
@@42Pursuit thank you very much.
Thanks ! Very helpful
I noticed the cartridge that you took out has an O-ring and each end. The new cartridge you installed only had the one O-ring at the control end (Knob shaft). Is the second O-ring not necessary?
I assume that they updated the design for some good reason, so I'd say that if your replacement cartridge didn't have the second o-ring that it should be fine.
good job bud. Thx. Good video
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for letting me know!
