    Your explanation is what sets you apart, most clips don’t do it. It’s really educational, thank you.
    Perhaps also caution the viewers of differences on threads on valve seats (replacement part). I found three 5/8 seats with 24, 27 short and 27 long threads, it’s important especially when you order parts online.
    Learn a lot from your clip.
    Now let’s do one on how to soap scum from bathroom tiles.

    You have explained the stem working procedures better that anyone I’ve seen. Thank you. My shower faucet even after replacing the rubber washers on the stem. Do I need to pull the seats ( new seat) and use the sealant or Teflon tape ?

    • @frugaldiy1
      @frugaldiy1  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you, dw, for your very nice comment. I truly appreciate that you took the time to write it.
      Now, to your question. Yes, Sir, replace those seats because you saw in the video what pitted and worn seats did to my washers--chewed them up. No, you don't have to use the Rectroseal 5 on the seats, and I would not recommend Teflon tape, ever, if you can use Rectroseal 5. Rectroseal 5 is simply that great. I only use the sealant on the seats so they remove easily next time I have to replace them. The seats, themselves, do not need any sealant. If you worry at all about a leak where the valve body screws into the manifold, then, yes, I would put some Rectroseal 5 on the threads of the valve body before I screwed it into the manifold. Technically, you should not need the sealant on valve body to manifold, but it is cheap insurance against a leak. And, yes, if you do use sealant there, I would highly recommend Rectroseal 5.

      @@frugaldiy1 Thank you, I have already replaced the seats, complete new stems and have replaced the seat washers on the end of the stems twice in the last 8 months. I just put new washers on the stems again and I still have a cold water leak there. The one I took off last had deep rings in it . I’m at a loss. Do the cone shaped washer do better ?

    • @frugaldiy1
      @frugaldiy1  2 роки тому

      Okay. First, please tell me WHEN the cold water is leaking. How do you know it's the cold, vs. hot, water? Is it leaking when the faucet/water is off or when the faucet/water is on? Is the leak from the bathtub spout/shower head or is the water leaking from the valve stem body?
      No, of the cone-shaped washers. The washers are specific to the valve body.

    • @dwhunter8904
      @dwhunter8904 2 роки тому

      @@frugaldiy1 They cold water is always leaking when the knob is turned off. It leaks from the tub spout and is always cold to the touch. The seats are new and so is the washers. I have the correct washer size on the stem.

    • @frugaldiy1
      @frugaldiy1  2 роки тому

      When I have a leak from the spout or shower head, I always find it difficult to discern if it's the cold water or hot water that's leaking because, unless it's a massive leak, by the time the hot water makes its way through the pipes and dripping out of the spout or shower head, it's always cold. Just food for thought. Typically, it's the hot water washer that gives way before the cold water washer does because the flow of the hot water tends to make the hot water washer less pliable and brittle.
      The "deep rings" you mention, in the new washers that failed, lead me to think that maybe the there is too much force being applied to the stem/handle when the water is turned off. After installing new washers, I apply VERY LITTLE force to the handle when I turn the water off, and I have no leaks. Maybe apply less force to the handle/stem when turning the water off.
      Given that you say the leak occurs only when the water is off, that leads me to think that either the washer or the seat is the culprit. Why the washer or seat, or both, keeps failing is a bit of a head-scratcher to me.
      One thought is that if the washer screw is turned in too tight, it can cause the washer to "cup", which impairs the washer-to-seat seal.
      When the water, hot or cold, is on, do you ever experience intermittent loss, then increase of water volume from the spout or shower head?
