    Thank you SO MUCH! We've been renting a house the past 5 years. Once a year, our tub faucet starts dripping, and within 2 weeks it is a bad stream. You wouldn't believe how much water comes out. We'd let our landlord know, and she'd send out her preferred plumbing company. The first year, they told us it was because we were squeezing too tight on the faucet. I said "Oh okay, we won't do that anymore." The second year they came out, they said the same thing. And kind of treated me like I was dumb for letting it happen again. They showed me the washer, how worn out it had been. I was surprised because, even though this is my kids' bathroom so I don't always know how tight it's being turned, it didn't really make sense that in one year it got worn out. The third year, they really started talking down to me. I live in a lower income neighborhood, so I'm not sure if they think people in my neighborhood are stupid or what, but he spoke to me like I was unable to comprehend what he was saying. I promised we'd only turn the knob lightly.
    The fourth year, oh boy. He probably repeated the same thing to me about the faucet one dozen times, in the most condescending tone I've EVER been spoken to in my life. I've never been made to feel so small or stupid by anyone. He insisted that we were squeezing the faucet so tightly, that it was all our fault, that we didn't even try to be gentle, etc. I promised myself and my kids I would never let these plumbers in my house again, they tried to make us feel so small.
    So last week when our faucet started leaking, I knew I needed to do something different. Your video saved the day!! Not only teaching us how to replace the washer, but showing us how if the seat is damaged you will have to keep replacing the washer. Guess what that plumber NEVER replaced? A damaged seat. It was his fault our washer kept wearing out. I knew it made no sense why every year, like clockwork, we had this issue. It all makes sense now. THANK YOU!!!!!!

      DIY University That Fix It Guy hi. A plumber installed a brand new tub faucet yesterday. Now there is an issue. When running the diverter, only water comes out of the diverter with good pressure. The problem is when running the shower, the diverter still running. Both at good pressure. When everything is turned off, there are no leaks. I noticed this after the plumber installed and I asked the plumber why the diverter would still run, when shower is still running. The plumber said that is what the new faucets do now. That seems like a huge waste of water when showering. Is what he’s saying true or did he install something wrong? If he installed wrong, what is the fix?

    Thanks for the video. Years of a small leak turning into a stream leak. The plumber came out to fix the elements on my hot water heater ($250 for labor). He noticed the streaming leak and said for another $250 he would return and fix the steam plus I'd need to buy a new bathtub faucet system or he'd buy and install. That's when I said to myself a few choice words that weren't French. On the night b4 my day off, I searched UA-cam for ways to fix a leaking bathroom tub system. There you were, so thanks. Now I've got to find out about septic systems. Thank you again for the ease and explanation of the video.

    I’m a widowed mom of two young kids. We own our home and don’t really have great insurance nor do we have the extra money to hire a plumber when times call for it. We have had a constant heavy leak in one of our bath tubs w the hot water and it constantly ran, it wasn’t a simple drip, it was a steady stream, it’s been going on for a few years now and I’ve just eaten the added expense, my water bill is always outrageous but the streaming hot water made it worse. I got up the other morning and the stream worsened to the point of needing fixed otherwise there’s no telling how high my water bill would have went up. So I got on here and started looking for videos w similar faucets to mine, I landed on ur video. I had to drain my hot water heater because the plumbers that installed it put the shut off on the wrong pipe, but once I was able to get that done, I was able to use ur very helpful video and get my faucet apart, went t Walmart got a multipack of plumbing washers, ect. found one that fit and put it all back together and now no more unwanted running/leaking water! I can’t tell u how much being able to use this video meant, I can’t afford a plumber, don’t have my husband to help, my dad is disabled and can’t help, so I was on my own and w/ out this video and the Good Lord’s help I would NOT have been able to get it fixed!! THANK YOU for taking the time and for the helpful info!!

    One of the best videos on how to do this! Thank you! I replaced my valves and seats this morning ... about 45 minutes and I was done. Total cost ... $52 and no problems and no leaks. I was very happy! (I just used a dab of plumbers grease around the new seats to aid installation). Honestly, just for peace of mind, for about $12 for the removal tool and two new seats, it makes sense just to replace the seats while you have those valves out. Also, you may pay a little more, but going to a faucet supply store is well worth it ... you take in the old parts and the guys are very knowledgeable in making sure you have the right replacements. Advice at Home Depot, etc. can be hit or miss, depending on who you ask.

    Thank you for the explaining this simply and showing the actual replacement of the worn part. I found the video very helpful. I also appreciated the fact that you noted I could just get the replacement washer rather than an entire kit. That saved me a ton of-money as well. I appreciate the time you took to share your knowledge.

    Outstanding! My tub's hot water faucet wears through washers at least once per year. I believe it needs a new seat. So, as I am replacing the mechanism this time, i will change the seat. Loved this video! Shared it with my landlord. Apparently, this the third time they come to fix the leaking faucet. They keep telling us don’t tighten the knob too much and wait till water drains from the line; 🤔 which it doesn’t. So came across your video, very insightful by the way, and had the ah ha moment! Told my landlord about it and hopefully she asks her plumber if he has replaced the seat. That should take care of that for good!

    Excellent Video! I'm a HandyMan 26yrs now and I generally just cut out the tile and wall and replace the whole fixture, then replace it with a trim plate or a whole new tiled shower. But in today's case that is not in the budget so I will be changing the seat on a 46yr old 3 knob shower fixture.

    Good video. I'd do them both at the same time anyway since the other washer is likely not far behind it in being worn out. Might as well while you have the tools out if it were me. Nice bonus about the seat, too. That can be easily overlooked - good and thorough job.

    Very informative! This is an excellent, step by step video that covers the important parts very nicely. As an aside, I think it is HILARIOUS to read some of the comments below about people not shutting off their water and getting sprayed when you CLEARLY warned them in the video to shut off their water first. Believe me, it's not that you needed to emphasize it more, it's that those people need to learn how to pay attention to a "how to" instructional video! Perhaps an unexpected wet cell phone will teach the lesson! Ha! Thanks for the free and awesome information! Saved me a $80 plumbing bill!

    • @ajensen7815
      @ajensen7815 9 років тому +3

      I agree with all, MrLund. Regarding not turning the water off, I watched another video for bathroom sink faucets ("for dummies") that actually videoed him turning off the water. That one is for people who don't listen and need total visual instruction! As a note - my valves were stuck in the open position. Even after taking off the handles and using pliers, I could not get one to turn off for fear of actually breaking it. I HAD to turn of the main water supply to my house. Luckily it was in a convenient location. (I ended up replace that valve, too, as well as the washer.) But beware: In some older homes, like my last, the main water shutoff doesn't work, either. In that case (as it appears in my current house), I would probably get a plumber to install a new one.

    Nice video and shows how it goes when the stars align. Mine (Price Fisster), fought me tooth and nail even from the get go on popping out the H&C tabs. Only a razor knife would pop them free. The cover plate didn't have a set screw and wall glued to the wall with putty and needed to be unscrewed. Another 1/2 hour to get that off Forget the adjustable wrench as everything was buried deep back in the wall. I was guessing at sizes and buying double sockets getting the wrong ones and eventually buying a $20 set I returned later. Price F. requires a 27/32 and a 31/32. Getting the 27 off was O.K but the 31 I was using the rod they give you and then I had to add an extension to break it loose. The hole in the tile was so tight I had to hammer on the socket. Once out the worn seal that had a phillips screw holding it in place had a rounded out hole. No easy outs handy so had to buy the whole stem that came with a seat. Again, breaking the seat loose took a cheater pipe on top of the stem removal tool. Once you have it loose a flat head screwdriver gets it out faster and the best way to get the new one started. I think 5 trips to the store total. I was going to do the hot side too but fixing the cold side stopped the leak. Once I had the new stem in place and tight the socket was lodged in the tile and another 1/2hr to break that loose. Definitely a 3 beer job.
