If you're looking at a blood smear (used to perform a CBC) then white blood cells>red cells>platelets. So the heights of the characters are actually proportional to their real sizes. Platelets come together to form large clots, but individually they are the smallest thing you see in blood normally:). This show has so many great nerd facts built in.
Yeah doctor Mike must see the whole season this anime is extremely good at teaching biology about our body its pretty insane even i heard about a lot of med students studies are carried/helped by this series!
If the subtitles are translated accurately. Even then, that does not change what the cells are doing. Sickle cells are long cells responsible for clotting, and platelets fuse with the red blood cells to form the scab.
There's a nice detail that I like that's in the manga, that each cell's lifespan in a real body is how often the various cells in the show need new uniforms.
You ever notice that the main character red blood cell has that single lock of hair pointing up and? It’s shaped like a sickle. You also notice how she’s always getting lost? Some theorize that she specifically is a sickle cell.

the manga actually have a spin-off where the body isn't healthy. The body is a smoker. So the cells are working way too hard like hell. It's like battle field. Also the white blood cells was a sexy badass girl and the red blood cell was a boy.
I was curious why he said they were supposed to be big. They’re tiny in comparison to red and white blood cells. So tiny, in fact, that they can’t plug a cut or wound on their own and need fibrin, red blood cells, and white blood cells to help clot.
There's also Cells at Work Black that flips it where the human is in critical condition. It touches on some emergency situations and eventually a heart failure. The ending is just depressing on what happens.
I absolutely love the last 2 episodes. It really showed what the body could really do once you’ve truly entered a state where you’re between life and death.
I showed this to my doctor mother too and she had the same reaction She even said that she's planning to make her students watch this and oh boy those students are definitely aceing all their exams
Same here, recently discovered Dr.Mike and remembered all the videos of doctors reacting to this. Went to see if there was a Dr.Mike one and there wasn't. I thought about suggesting it on reddit, but I didn't even have the time to do it
I'm just a teen, but I love Cells At Work. My sister introduced it to me (her boyfriend is a med student) and I love it so much. It's very educational.
Dunno if you noticed, but there’s this fantastic detail about the red blood cells’ outfits. When they’re delivering oxygen to the body, their jackets are bright red with dark sleeves, but when they’re delivering CO2 to the lungs, they have turned their jackets inside out, so they are a darker (you could almost say desaturated) shade of red! They also deliver oxygen in a package of four tanks per box, a nice little reference to the composition of hemoglobin. Obviously an actual red blood cell carries an absolutely massive amount of oxygen, being little more than a tiny sack just filled with hemoglobin, but it’s still a very nice visual representation of their functions!
The fact that Mike was like “oh, he is in a capsule. He’s an incapsulated bacteria!” Made me say out loud “smart man” to be able to know instantly in this cartoon that that was the reference - pretty cool Dr Mike.

another thing to note about the spleen, that’s where rbcs and wbcs go to die, hence why she was so startled at first when she accidentally went there and why the captain of the killer t cells said anyone who didn’t kill the bacteria fast enough is being sent straight to the spleen (to die) lol. absolutely brilliant.

Eloise A Disney Nerd I personally disagree. With subtitles I’m less likely to be able to be actually watch the animation. I have to get through all the subtitles first and then look at what’s happening which when something has amazing animation is annoying. I’ll watch both at times and there are dubs that don’t really do it for me but more often than not watching the English dub is preferred for me. I'm an immunologist and I love this show - THE MOST ACCURATE and correct presentation of immunology I've seen. I recommend it to my students to get a sense of the dynamic interaction. Love it.
One of the other things that I think is really interesting about this show is that you’ll notice whenever the red blood cells are in an artery, their jacket is bright red with a dark red trim, but when they’re in a vein, the jacket is dark red with a bright red trim, an obvious nod to the fact that deoxygenated blood is darker. This show’s attention to detail is amazing!
