Lili h the whole time I was watching I was just thinking how this video would have been 1000% better if he had watched the series then talk about it after.
Funny story. I’m a Japanese high schooler and literally everyone at school knows about this(except for me, I don’t like anime), so my biology teacher started talking about it and how perfectly accurate it is and started showing some scenes during class because we were way ahead of other classes and we ended up just watching はたらく細胞 til the end of the 50 minute class.
What's funny is, even though the stylistic differences are glaring, they make just as much sense as the ones in vanilla. IE, the white blood cells being unarmored females with crude weapons and poor communication, or how the body begins destroying itself, cell by cell, out of pure stress. Helps that it's being overwatched by vanilla's creator.
Black also gets into more... risqué content when dealing with ED and STDs. Also baldness and alcoholism. Really would not want to meet the owner of the CaW Black body.
I still can't get over the chapter 3 subtitle for Black. ERECTION EJACULATION *EMPTINESS* Not gonna lie, it was hilarious when I first read those words.
Hi Doctor, theres a comic version called Cells at Work BLACK, it deals with darker themes, the setting of the story being in a unhealthy body, we get to see the effects of stress in the body, alcoholism, even STD and is as informative and accurate as the main show.
and since doc hope is about sharing love for other youtubers a group calling themselves greaced lightning something or other is also covering it, they are med students and it is quite fun watching them talk about stuff they just learned showing up in the show and how they wish they watched it before their tests
Honestly, this is just so wholesome to watch. My dad's a pathologist and the whole family watched it together (we were planning on doing a family cosplay and everything with me and my sister as platelets lol) and I'm watching these videos now to just... re-capture the wholesomeness of doctors watching Cells at Work.
I'd love to see your dad reacting to this show! No pathologists have done a reaction to this show yet, but so much of it falls under the specialty of the pathologist!
i love how you had little side lessons on this reactions video. This is how i want reaction video done. You should honestly review the whole series because i like how you break everything down
TheDaxter11 that is veeery true, i don't know your country but i know its the same thing but here the education is made to endoctrinate people, not teach
Notes about RBCs design: 1) If you see any of them from behind you see the cap they wear is concave in the middle like a real RBC, 2) their cap and jacket are reversible and change depending on if they are carrying oxygen or co2, 3) The main RBC has a cowlick that looks like a sickle cell, which explains her awful sense of direction.
I just watch this whole series with Doctor hope. The thing that absolutely blows me away is that he caught every single Easter egg and basically started telling you what is going to happen before it happens just by seeing what the Invader looks like. I started watching this episode at 1:30 in the morning and my ass did not go to bed until 6 a.m. he kept me up all night this is probably one of the best video series I have ever seen. Thank you so much for downloading this.
Absolutely adore the fact you're reviewing Cells at Work! Short story here, I was actually struggling a bit through my physiology class in university when this anime came out, and I kid you not it ACTUALLY helped me passed physiology so it makes me so happy that one of my favorite youtubers is reviewing a show that, quite literally, saved my grade:')
Snap! I'm reading for my med school entry exams and am not lying when I say that I have learned to remember a hell of a lot more from 'Cells at Work' than some on my books!
UA-cam! Why you so good to me? You can bet there was a child within me that was desperately curious to learn how my doctor would react to this show. It's so amazing that this is a thing. Thanks for taking the time to do this good Dr.
Right? When I first started watching I was like, IS THIS ALL HAPPENING IN THE SAME BODY?! But, I mean, reoccurring characters so I guess it has to be. Poor hooman.
Not really. This kind of thing happens all the time. Bacteria and viruses get in, cells mutate to a cancerous condition, your body kills them off. On that scale, it's a major battle. But for you, it's rare you even notice until you get generalized symptoms, which means the battle has just become a full-scale war. You are actually getting microcancers all the time from background radiation, but your body fights them off before they can become dangerous malignancies. (In fact there was an experiment where they isolated lab mice in a mine, shielded from background rads...when they brought them out, the mice were FAR more prone to cancers.) I think this human is a soldier or something. It explains the battery of conditions he or she suffers in later episodes.
I've watched a bunch of Dr. Hope's videos before and I was SO HAPPY to see him reviewing Cells at Work! What a wonderful choice! Big shout out to Dr. Hope for not only making amazing content but also taking great suggestions from his fan base!
Yeah! The anime / manga is a plethora of great human biology knowledge. I wish there was an anime version of the other Cells at Work manga edition. The version we watch is based on a human with a generally healthy body / disposition. The other version of Cells at Work (Manga only) is called Cells at Work: Black and chronicles the inner workings of the cells inside the body of a human who smokes, eats poorly, is overweight, and I believe has some pretty rough diseases / viruses / health problems. Either way, LOVE Dr. Hope's take on this and I 100% agree with everything you said, @ayune Souza !
OH! And another thing (I hadn't finished Dr. Hope's review of the episode before I posted my other comments)! Dr. Hope seemed to love the first episode of Cells at Work and said pretty excitedly that he'll probably be reviewing more of them! Let's HOPE [ ;) ] for the entire season since it's not that long and the more episodes he watches the more he'll fall in love with the series and its ability to explain the inner workings of our bodies in a fun and educational way! REALLY looking forward to his reaction to the platelet-chans, too!
70's : We will have flying cars in 21st century. 2018 : Real Doctor reacting to Cells at Work. The old generation under estimated us. Don't misunderstand this, this is a compliment.
We already have flying cars but they're fucking expensive as hell to make and not practical at improving traffic. It also requires you to have the skill to fly.
Notice how the main red blood cell has a curved hair which sticks out of her hair, she's probably a sickle cell hence why she's bad at navigating. (I think) Edit: I was wrong, thx doc for the correction :)
As 'Legit' as it Gets! That's what I meant by her being a sickle cell, they still do the job, but just like from the show, she's not the best at navigating hence the map thing
@@Perifroog But sickle cells can't do their jobs well at all. That's why they are problematic. Their hemoglobin mishapes them so they flow weird sure, but they also can't hold nearly as much oxygen as a regular Erythrocyte. Nor can they effectively squeeze into smaller blood vessels because of their shape. I'm saying she's NOT a sickle cell because despite having a hard time navigating she still carries as much O2 and CO2 for gas exchange and fits fine into the smallest cappilaries. There's lots of other evidence to debunk this claim as well. It might be a cameo and an intentional part of the character design, but that's all. I doubt the mangaka made AE-3803 a sickle cell. There's nothing to actually support it.
As a medical professional myself, Cells at Work is by far my favourite biology-based anime. I recommend it to colleagues whenever I can (if they’d be opened to it) because I think it’s cute and educational.
I've done a module on immunology before, and what this whole clip has covered is 30 to 40% of that entire module. So, if you understand what is going on in this clip, you will have a good foundation understanding on immunology
This episode covers at best 5% of a real immunology course/module (don't know what watered down version you took), and the whole show covers maybe 30% in total and that's at a very low detail level.
@@Omega3131 Hmmm, well I did a Microbiology subject and we covered immunology for about 5-6 lessons... Can I safely assumed that you must've covered a year's worth or 2.
Tanid Nganthavee I actually took the online course BioSci: Immunology with Hematology from UC Irvine here on UA-cam (easy to find with a search). It's 27 videos of about 50 minutes each IIRC. It is what I would call a standard immunology course.
My 9 year old daughter LOVES this show and she's watching it now. I feel like they should show this in some middle school biology/ science classes it's a really cute but Informative show
I am medical student and watched this anime since ep 1. And they are VERY ACCURATE even though it is simplified, but damn it is good! And i hope i have this when i was senior high. They even explained Humoral and Cellular defense mechanisms pretty detailed. And how there are Basophil, Eosinophil, Macrophage, Killer T cell, Memory cell, Platelets, etc and their jobs and what they use to do their jobs
Fun fact: If you notice Red Blood Cell's hair, and that crescent bang off to the side. It explains why she always gets lost, because she's a sickle cell.
she isn't a sickle cell, just that the hair is shaped like one. that could be a coincidence, or a reference but sickle cells can't deliver oxygen because the hemoglobin is abnormally aligned. also bodies dont have random sickle cells, that requires a desease, in which case thare would be more directionless goofs in Cells at Work.
Regarding the Red Blood cell that we follow as POV character, have you noticed that a distinct strain of her hair is C shaped? She is a --Cycle-- Sickle blood cell, which explains why she gets lost all the time.
I haven't seen it yet but other people are saying that's not confirmed and just a theory. Btw it's spelled sickle cell. Still interesting though, thanks for sharing :)
The other subtle thing is when they're transporting CO2, their uniforms are reversible and they switch to the darker red inner side and swich back to the brighter red when carrying O2!
PongoXBongo Okay so someone correct me if I'm wrong, but there are two things about sickle cell anaemia. First of all, one of the main issues if I remember correctly is that struggle binding oxygen properly like other normal red blood cells due to a lower binding coefficient of the haemoglobin. Secondly, you can actually have sickle red blood cells but not necessarily have sickle cell anaemia, and there are some diseases like malaria where if you have sickle cells it actually provides a slight defense mechanism.
I really like anime, like, really like. And it just makes me nervous when I see a professional, one not so used to watching anime, watches an anime that covers topic they're just an expert at. And it makes me excited to see that even a professional is delighted by an anime and insert their own lesson here and there. They get to enjoy the show and I get to learn something new with a professional's validation.
I think our little red blood cell Protagonist is a sickle cell. But my only evidence is that she has trouble finding her way around (Trouble flowing properly in the blood stream). And the little bit of her hair that kind of sticks up in that odd shape normally used in books to show the difference between normal and sickle blood cells.
As a person with sickle cell. I definitely thought that. Lol I was like this cell is a bit goofy. She's either going to cause an accidental stroke or this person's a sickler.
AE-3803 lacked a sense of direction even before she had her ahoge though, and I feel like if she were intended to be a sickle-trait her hat would be deformed to match and there'd be more mob characters with similar features even for only sickle-trait. That and we've seen her ahoge comically detects danger, so it's likely not a design element meant to have much meaning assigned to it. When she was a progenitor cell she was assessed to likely be a dummy unfit for anything but the work of an Erythrocyte- which is sort of framed as mindless work and playing on their lack of nucleus and organelles (which Black more overtly points out in a much more fatalistic tone). It's also possible her number/name is her hemoglobin- AE would be heterozygous E- not enough to be entirely defective like EE (which results in anemia problems among other issues) but in flavor for 3803's general clumsiness but not outright incompetence. Sickle is type S hemoglobin. Type-E is at its most prevalent in Asia, which of course is the likely ethnicity of the host body too. Normal hemoglobin is homozygous type A (AA), which is the prefix for both her senior as well as the protagonist of Cells at Work Black. For added fun AE-3803 and AA-5100 (her senior) are hexcodes for the colors of their respective hair- none of the other Erythrocytes seem to have this trend in their names though.
Oliver Twist She has a sickle in her hair, that isn’t found on other blood cells, it’s the hair things some anime characters have that is always sticking up
Here in my med school some doctors are already showing snippets of the anime to teach Soon all of med school all over the world would be taken over muhahahaha
Well, if you like this I suggest you to check cell at work: dark/black, it's like this show but it's cover some nasty stuff such as masturbate, drinking alcohol and smoking
Dr. Hope, If you can, you should make a reaction of all of the episodes of this, each one covers different things that can happen to the body, and your take on it would be rather intriguing.
So I thought I’d come back and say that this show and your reaction/review actually helped me in college in my Medical Assistant education. Me as a stupid guy. Watch this show and thought it was cute. Than decided to show it to my girlfriend to see if she would like it. I mainly showed it to her because she is in college, studying to be a teacher, and she really enjoy this anime. We ended watching all the available episode at the time, and she was telling me how accurate some parts were. She would also pause it and gives me more details about it. She also said if they would ever come out with a English dub, she wouldn't actually mind showing this show to her class
It is officially English subbed over at Crunchyroll.com. If, by chance, you meant English dubbed, I havent heard of any plans about it happening. Also, for what it is, its kinda violent with the blood spurts, but you dont see any of the high violence going toward any of the human cells.
I also enjoyed this show a few months back on Netflix, being an ex-Maxillo-facial surgeon. The analogies and executions of basic immunology and infectology notions are well integrated into the story. The Platelets are my favorites hahahaha subscribed!
It's an incredibly powerful and strange sort of catharsis to see someone genuinely enjoy something that you love. ESPECIALLY when it's anime lol. Putting that aside, loved the video, your presentation was perfect and engaging and I loved the breakdowns and explanations, definitely gonna be watching the rest of these

There's a sort of sister manga series called 'Cells at Work Black' about the same concept but in a unhealthy body; might provide some video material.
I really hope the black version gets an anime.

Right? When I first started watching I was like, IS THIS ALL HAPPENING IN THE SAME BODY?! But, I mean, reoccurring characters so I guess it has to be. Poor hooman.
Then there's Hataraku saibou black where the body's even more messed up lol
I heard that this body is a child who’s prone to infection and the one in CFW Black is a man who is a workaholic 🤔 I could be wrong though.
(In fact there was an experiment where they isolated lab mice in a mine, shielded from background rads...when they brought them out, the mice were FAR more prone to cancers.)
I think this human is a soldier or something. It explains the battery of conditions he or she suffers in later episodes.
I saw a comment on another video that this is the body of a shounen anime protagonist that's why it's always in life threatening situations.

Notice how the main red blood cell has a curved hair which sticks out of her hair, she's probably a sickle cell hence why she's bad at navigating. (I think)
Edit: I was wrong, thx doc for the correction :)
She's not. She's just bad at reading maps. In recent episodes she's been able to do her work just fine.
As 'Legit' as it Gets!
That's what I meant by her being a sickle cell, they still do the job, but just like from the show, she's not the best at navigating hence the map thing
OrangeOVA I'm pretty that's exactly right
@@Perifroog But sickle cells can't do their jobs well at all.
@DUCKS That is true. But I doubt the series would so blatantly misrepresent a danger to the body like sickle cells.

when this anime gives you an easy explanation than your textbook
I've done a module on immunology before, and what this whole clip has covered is 30 to 40% of that entire module. So, if you understand what is going on in this clip, you will have a good foundation understanding on immunology
Screw textbooks
This episode covers at best 5% of a real immunology course/module (don't know what watered down version you took), and the whole show covers maybe 30% in total and that's at a very low detail level.
@@Omega3131 Hmmm, well I did a Microbiology subject and we covered immunology for about 5-6 lessons... Can I safely assumed that you must've covered a year's worth or 2.

Fun fact: If you notice Red Blood Cell's hair, and that crescent bang off to the side. It explains why she always gets lost, because she's a sickle cell.
oOF
she gets her way around in the later manga chapters iirc
More likely it's a reference to an Ahoge
animanga.wikia.com/wiki/Ahoge
*thank god nobody is like her*
she isn't a sickle cell, just that the hair is shaped like one. that could be a coincidence, or a reference but sickle cells can't deliver oxygen because the hemoglobin is abnormally aligned. also bodies dont have random sickle cells, that requires a desease, in which case thare would be more directionless goofs in Cells at Work.
Why would our protagonist be a sickle cell? Aren't they bad?
@@PongoXBongo no, they just are terrible at getting their jobs done due constantly getting lost, they are basically just really bad with directions

That acronym made me instantly picture a crow attacking your head in the middle of you speaking.
*watches Cells at Work once*
You know, I'm something of a biologist myself
Oliver Twist
She has a sickle in her hair, that isn’t found on other blood cells, it’s the hair things some anime characters have that is always sticking up
Oh this person definitely had sickle cell trait at least hell they had to go to the hospital for dehydration and they are constantly under attack
