The basic Hip Lift and Hip Drop are not only an awesome beginner move to learn but it is also the building blocks for other advanced moves like the shimmy and the famous hip release.
If you are wondering what a hip lift is... it is when you tighten your oblique muscle (side muscle) while keeping your upper body and shoulders still. This will lift your hip upward. A hip drop is when you release the oblique muscle and the hip falls back to its downward position. As I said before this move is a great beginner move but also a move that all veteran dancers should brush up on regularly.

I think being able to see your legs would make it easier to understand

For the ones who don’t understand
Have both legs bent slightly and have one of those legs stand flat on the floor and the other on ur tip toes

same for me! and despite some other comments complaining about not seeing her legs, I think it's a good thing that she doesn't show her knees because that's how I've for the first time understood that the movement originates from the hip and the side muscles of the stomach! Before that video I always had my knees too much involved! Thank you so much for this great tutorial!

Your knees need to be bent the whole time, that’s the only way you can move your hips it’s a shame she’s not showing her legs and knees because that’s what belly dance is all about

Another video says to not lift your foot at all! I guess it depends on the tightness of the hip flexors?

I have seen it done both ways as well and I don’t think either way is incorrect. Like you said depending on the the flexibility in the hips and depending on what you want the move to look like. Just play around with it and try both ways.
