The Two Towers presents one big theme that impacted science fiction: industrialization. Isengard really brought into popularity the whole idea of "if you don't treat nature with respect, you'll be doomed by nature's wrath."
Would you consider The Belgariad, or David Eddings in general sometime in the near future? his stories are stereotypical to a degree but have heavy characterization, and new twists on some of Tolkien's tropes.
Extra Credits guys I do have a recommendation, and it’s partially so that i actually understand, when u cover the concepts and tropes created by the Authors, can u give specific examples in today’s genre. I couldn’t think of any examples from 2:29, despite the visuals. I don’t know, it’s just a recommendation.
@@denizn.tastan6847 But can you really call it "Mythology"? I get it's the background and an incredible depth of world building, but that series seems to focus more on the real mythology of cultures in our world.
Elijah Quigley I would personally like to see how his work influenced specific authors and works, as well as a more in-depth look into the general stuff discussed here as well. I’m sure it’s difficult with such an influential author. Almost a “what didn’t his work influence” situation. Which is fine, but why? Why did other authors decide that Tolkien’s vision of a party become the defacto method? Why was that popular but Conan fell by the wayside? I’d also like to see what influenced Tolkien. Did Howard even have any influence on Tolkien? Ya know, pretend I’m an idiot and I know literally nothing about the source material.
I’d love a deeper analysis! Anything to help me become a better author and story teller. You guys do a great job of presenting information in an easily understandable way.
I do think you guys should do an entire series on just the writings of Tolkien. One on Lewis would also be appreciated. This is a great series as is, tho so thank you for this at least
I also would love to see then make a video on The Chronicles of Narnia buy CS Lewis. The Chronicles of Narnia is what brought me into not only the fantasy genre but to books in general. I would actually really enjoy them making a series of extra fantasy to go along with their extra science fiction series think of it they could start with C S Lewis and JRR Tolkien and move on from there to other authors eventually reaching more modern authors like Robert Jordan or Brandon Sanderson.
Wow. This video is spot on and so amazing. “Evil is giving into our worst desires - Good is refusing them. Giving into the temptation of the ring is to be corrupted by it. Resisting it is heroic.” I could not have formulated that better. Such a deep insight! Thank you very much for this video! 🙏
I really need to address this constantly recurring idea that somehow Tolkien being influenced and writing based on his experiences in WW1 and what he saw happening during the '30's and '40's does not make Allegory. Allegory is deliberate. To extend the quote that you used last episode: "I think that many confuse applicability with allegory, but the one resides in the freedom of the reader, and the other in the purposed domination of the author." - J. R. R. Tolkien
Yes, the Silmarillion is key. It is not as readable in parts as LOTR, but it lays so much foundation. It is what LOTR stands upon, but so few know of it. I've actually read the Silmarillion more times than I have LOTR.
One of my favorite insights into Lord of the Rings came from a talk given at Brigham Young University, where the speaker talked about Tolkien's religious themes. They said that in Tolkien's writing, when bad things happen, it doesn't mean there isn't a God, but it means there is an opposition. These ideas came in response to many leaving religion because of the world wars and the great depression. In my own Sci fi writing, I want to explore these themes. I hope I don't get keel hauled by society.
You guys should Absolutely do deep dives on these stories. They are beautiful and interesting. I also love that you are doing fantasy in a scifi setting. The two genres really do go hand in hand and are just flip sides of a coin.
I want to give a shout out to whomever does the artworks for these, awesome work! I really like how you manage to capture the feel and themes of what the subject is as well as making beautiful drawings that spice up the narrative.
I agree. I'm much more of an Extra History kind of guy. You guys should do more LOTR though. AND since I saw it for a moment PLEASE do Oryx and Crake!!!
Please, I'd take an ENTIRE year of videos dedicated to unraveling all the wonderful things in Tolkien's work, and how they've influenced fantasy and science fiction as we know it. Maybe I'm being optimistic about how much you could rake out of his stories, but it would be an amazing series and I would LOVE to watch it!
A deeper dive into Tolkien's worlds/books would be great! I love the analysis here, and would love for it to be added onto. He covers so many different themes, and has such interesting characters. It would also be cool to see an analysis of C.S. Lewis Narnia series, similar style as this one (one book at a time).
"Who am I, Gamling?" "You are our king, sire." "And do you trust your king?" "Your men, my lord, will follow you to whatever end." "...to whatever end."
Yes. More Tolkien. So much of his work is not only integral to fantasy, but also to sci-fi. To understand where you want to go, you first need to know where you've been so you don't wind up walking in circles.
A good chunk of the material mentioning heroes and adventuring falls in line with another book written in the late 1940s that comments on this style and genre, The Hero With A Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell. Frodo's adventure through the Lord of the Rings trilogy hits many of the key aspects presented in Campbell's Monomyth and Hero's Journey outlines .
You sir made my day with the classic Cyclops and Wolverine. Not only as I am a huge fan of the 90s X-Men, but I'm guessing as this is a games channel there is a not too subtle nod to the fantastic X-Men Legends series of games which start off with you using Cyclops and Wolverine and adding more characters into a "team". I lost track of how many hours I put into the Legends and Alliance series of Marvel games and hope they do a port to the PS4 of the Ultimate Alliance 3 game.
I would really love to see more coverage of LoTR! Despite not getting much into the franchise, It really peaked my interest on how heroic fantasy, hell, any type of fantasy today were influenced by this book
I would love nothing more than for you to do a deeper dive into Tolkien’s work. LOTR is by far my favorite work of fiction, and the fantasy genre that we all love today was almost entirely crafted by Tolkien.
I like how Tolkien introduces the concept of the Party, and it got me thinking about the importance of worldbuilding in works of fiction that became (or served as inspiration for) RPG settings. Would you do a series on (pen and paper) RPGs, their history and tropes and whatnot? I'd back that with some of my few euro-bucks.
It's fascinating that Tolkien said that he wasn't referencing anything. But in a weird way, maybe that was his own way of telling the world that the morals of his tales were timeless. It didn't matter that he was in the midst of writing this epic in one of the darkest times of human history - the lesson and tale the world needed to know was true none the less.
Yes! More Tolkien! Your in depth analysis of Frankenstein was brilliant, and all this Genre Fiction deserves such analysis. I think horror, sci fi and fantasy have so much in common, and the lines between them are very blurred, and not very important. Keep up the great content!
1:26 Ok... i don´t want to take away from Tolkien´s significance here, but Journey to the West did it first and its party arguably was even closer to the modern Five Man Band Trope. Obviously I don´t know if Tolkien was inspired by that, probably not tbh, but later western and most East Asian artists definitely were.
Extra Credits is that channel you take for granted until you realize that everything they make actually has top notch production and a lot of love poured into it.
I usually don't comment on videos, but since you asked so nicely... I would love to see a series exploring the Lord of the Rings, as well Tolkien's other work in Arda! (I love The Children of Hurin.)

Absolutely!

Deep dive is now on my Xmas list
Definitely more Tolkien! Also would love to see y'all guys look into Silmarillion, etc.
There's a years worth of content right there.
Yeah, Silmarillion as an example of building myth from scratch would be a very nice theme.
Silmarillion would fit better to Extra Mythology I believe

We need to go Deeper!

We must have EC delve deeper. But not too deep, lest they unleash the sleeping behemoth of fantasy.
