Regarding Ukraine, I hope you could do a one off episode about something the country’s history. I know these get a while to be made, it’s nice for people to support Ukraine in ways we can. Putin has claimed in his speeches that Ukraine has no history, and while the country isn’t like Poland or Finland with more separate history from Russia it’s not true that Ukraine has no history.
Great video, but I am a little disappointed that you did not say a strong political statement and did not hit hard on politicians who use health care only as a tool to gain or retain power. You only said that some myths are spread by politicians. You should have said directly that some extremist people invent and propagate medical myths to keep women subservient to men.

This is one of the stories where I really want a verbatim transcript of the conversation with a magistrate that must have taken place, along the lines of ''Well, we arrested her... Now what am I supposed to charge her with?''.
This is horrifying, if she was put up to it by someone this sounds like it was SA at least if not torture, and if she was doing it to herself poor Mary had some serious mental health issues that could not be addressed at the time
Yes, it was sa, her husband and MIL forced her into doing it then MIL and husband profited by selling tickets to creepy rich men to watch her birth these decaying animals her husband forced into her.
I know this was supposed to be more of a "silly" episode, but given how damaging medical misinformation is, specifically with regards to pregnancy and women's bodies, I think a history of gynecology series (or something similar) would be very enlightening.
Coincidentally, Bram Stoker's brother was at the forefront of gynecological surgery at his time. Granted they still believed that hysterectomies could "cure" women of mental-unwellness, his practices should be taken with a grain of salt.

Throwing her in jail for 3 months seems like a bad decision, what she did was weird but she did prove that a lot of "medical professionals" at the time was just quacks. I am not sure if that was what she wanted to prove or if she just was a bit odd but neither of those things have ever been illegal (even if she probably would have been burned as a witch if she did this 100 years earlier). I am glad the judge let her go.
@@SetzerII That is true but they usually had some kind of reason throwing people in jail and showing up dead rabbits into your private parts might be the oddest reason to arrest someone I ever heard.
I didn't see any proof they were quacks. Science marches on maybe they had pretty cutting-edge theories with some evidence. It doesn't mean more concrete evidence won't come later and disprove an idea.
Maternal imprintation theory is one of those weird false but also kind of true in a weird way thing. Stress absolutely causes miscarriages, and being able to observe that would have strengthened the seemingly variacity of the theory. There's also preliminary research in many areas indicating that there are several traits that are determined not by genetics, but by interuterine enviroment. And we absolutely know about substances where consuming them during pregnancy will harm the fetus.
I learned about this from an episode WTF 101. In that same episode, they covered Gregor MacGregor and the Poyais Scheme and George Psalmanazar's fictional Formosa. I highly encourage y'all to cover these in future episodes.
I know their theory are utterly ridiculous and impossible. But what if they just born an anthropomorphic seriously legit? I don't wherever science can prove itself now. Don't worry that just what if.
18th and 19th century magicians joined in lampooning this strange event by producing rabbits from empty boxes, their pockets and eventually from borrowed top hats. They continue producing bunnies because they are small, docile animals and easily fed and trained. (The bunnies, not the magicians)
greedy, corrupt, and deceitful seems like politics of all ages, even those which are formed immediately after deposing regimes for being greedy, corrupt, and deceitful, (if not the intent of the founders, but for their naivety and a number of bad actors taking advantage of said naivety)
All right, now cover the Infantorium that was in Coney Island for like 40 years and showcased premature babies being cared for by technology that at the time seemed not just weird but (for some reason) unethical but that ended up being the stuff we used today. Also cared for by a team of nurses with better job perks than nurses have *today* -- and all this at no cost to the parents, because the spectacle provided enough income to run the place without bilking poor people desperate to save their doomed infants.

I think it's because this one is so narrow in focus and locks onto the life of this one woman and the media frenzy surrounding her. That's weirdly a lot more relatable because we only have one person to track, rather than an entire group like during epidemics and plagues.
Just hoping they don't go full Sam O'Nella and cover Tararre. History is long enough that there are all sorts of horrific tales that are completely and certifiably true.

Those beliefs are not so far off in my culture. One of our local news programs will often feature stories about strange pregnancies. Take the case of the baby born with one eye. When the mothers are asked about the cause of these pregnancies, their reasons will often be linked to maternal impression theory. Baby with one eye? Lady ate a lot of pineapples. (Turns out she was married to her second cousin). No one can blame them for these beliefs since they live in the rural parts of the country. They also cannot afford for medical care.
The closing commentary reminds me of when a lawmaker here in Idaho commented that doctors could have women swallow camera pills for gynecological exams.
Not sure how to explain this without using forbidden words but Rabbits were also known as Coneys, also spelled Cunny. In the same way as the word Beaver is used, that word led to the word c*** and a longer c-word combining the word for rabbit with the latin word for tongue. So the dirty jokes were just writing themselves for the London press.
I noticed the pictures of hair and heartburn when discussing pregnancy folktales, and that one’s actually probably true! There was at least one study done that showed a significant number of women who had heartburn during pregnancy (like, 85% or something like that) had children with hair, and the women who didn’t have heartburn usually had bald babies! The researchers think it’s because the hormones responsible for hair growth also happen to relax the muscles around the top of your stomach (whatever that sphincter is called), allowing stomach acid to go back up to it esophagus and cause heartburn! I looked it up when I was pregnant with my son because I had the WORST, CONSTANT heartburn. He was born with SO MUCH HAIR for a blonde baby. I can believe it’s true!
"She longed for rabbit...meat" No one of those esteemed doctors ever took the chimera option? They almost look like they don't know about the birds and the bees.

As a bunny mama, I approve of this episode! If course I didn't personally give birth to Elvis, though I know when he was born (3/7/2017) and have watched rabbits give birth before--including stillborn bunnies, so sad.
