The average life span was lower. But the main Factor was the higher Child mortality. Think of having 5 Children three die before the age of five and two get 80 you would have an average live expectancy below 35. That's one reason why summery statistics can be misleading. Especially when the variance is rarely reported.
If you ever come to visit southern Germany and want to see the iron Hands of Götz, they are on display in the museum of Burg Jagsthausen (also called Götzenburg), not far from the city of Heilbronn. In the summer you can also see the play by Goethe there. Quite a show and worth the visit 🙂
fun fact, Kentaro Miura did not base the character Guts in the manga Berserk off of Gotz of the Iron Hand, Miura had never even heard of Gotz until well after he had given his character the metal arm. this is just one of those strange almost insane coincidences that happen in the world.

Kinda like how an Austrian genocidal maniac and a Japanese manga-artist both settled on blond hair and blue eyes as a visual shorthand for "Ancient, Long-Lost Race Of Strong Guys." VERY uncomfortable coincidence, that.
honestly there are probably countless man like him, most forgotten or barely remembered. Council leaders of cities, small knights, etc. The reason we remember him is because his story survived till our time, while many others like him probably didnt.
This badass got his hand shredded in an age where medicine was a hope and a prayer, survived that, got two prosthetics, and passed away at 81 after a life of fighting What a mad lad!
There is a legend that said that at one point he left his usual feuding, took his sword, his armour and his metal hand and went of to fight armies of demons and their Five leaders. History does not like to talk about that period.
Expect a flood of Berserk references! That being said: in a parallel universe, the life of Gutz could mirror Gotz even more after defeating Griffith. RIP Miura 🙏🏽

You forgot to mention that the Götz von Berlichen got his Iron Fist from the master engineers and blacksmiths in Nürnberg, the silicon Valley of medieval Europe!
Possibly. We don’t really know where either of his prostheses were made. We only know with reasonably certainty that Hans von Mittelhausen (in Alsace, now part of France), who died in 1564, owned a prosthesis from the same maker.
This is the EC video/series that I did not know I needed. As a history lover, especially of the Early Modern period/HRE, era this brings me great excitement and joy to watch!

I love stories like these about disabled men like Götz who rejected a life of comfort and meritocracy he easily could’ve lived and chose instead to keep pursuing glory. He could have retired, and no one would blame him, but he lived for the fight and doesn’t seem the type to piddle through life on pity. In no small way, his tenacity and his own peculiarity earned his place in the annuals of history.
What you guys have missed in the video is the story of how Gotz is fighting Ganishka's, Kushan Emperor, monster underlings with a wizard, a boy, two fairies, a Christian knight and her servant

He was one of the inspirations for the evolution of Ash Williams in the Evil Dead franchise. Not simply his hand but also his response to authority and crass retort. With out Gotz we never would have had the perfection of the scene where Ash gets his new hand =)
I admit, Gotz was belligerent, but I can't deny...he has a hustle to rival Ned Kelly! In fact, the two are eerily similar in certain aspects. Probably a coincidence, though, they were from completely different parts of the world. Maybe Convergent People Defense...?

If you grow up near Jagsthausen ( like I did) where his castle is you will have a mandatory school trip to watch the play ….. nothing better than a a whole open air theatre full of 12 year olds just waiting for that one sentence “ Er solle much a A***** lecken” to then erupt into giggles and laughter! Never wanted to be the actor who had to do the afternoon performance…!
