DCS First Peek: Fighting the MiG-17F (PvP vs F-5E and F-1CE)

- First look into the fighting capabilities of the MiG-17F in DCS, from a perspective of an opponent plane. Fresco is a nimble but tough plane to fly. F-5E and F-1CE make the very capable opponents taking any advantage they can.
In case of F-1CE its a two on one engagement (as big a surprise to me as it is to the viewers).
Although more risky, I chose to take on the MiG-17 low and slow using the F-5E, it is riskier but more exciting, while F-1CE requires speed and power to outperform the nimble MiG-17F.

As the person who noticed it being the 17 on FB, I'm very much looking forward to it in DCS :)
Well done 😁. Its a gen 1 plane when they were still figuring out swept wings. If used correctly it can be a good asset in DCS, it served and flew against much newer planes and did it well.

They help to show whats going on, its twice the work but I think DCS drivers really appreciate seeing the whole picture. Its also a good measure of realism, speed vs Gs, planes can only pull specific Gs at specifoc speeds (turn ratebat 15 deg/sec is accurate in tacview but above 15 it starts going crazy), its a lot to learn but a real fighterpilot will see it instantly and say yep, at 250 kts those Gs are correct.

Looking forward to a well flown F-4/F-104 against the MIG-17. The 17 was the tightest turning jet until the F-16 arrived. Ever read "Scream of Eagles"? Early Top Gun days explaining exactly how to fight the MIG-17 in the Phantom. An informative read and one I am sure you will enjoy.
Thanks for the book, I'll pass it on, few guys here read all they can. This 17 turns accurately at 16.2 deg/sec at SL, 4600 kg, at 380-400 kts. But its also right at the edge and can go wrong if overpulled. Talo here did that turn turn in vertical when he cut me off, and it shows how quick the 17 can close on you. I have videos of 17 just eating these Gen 3 planes in a sustained 2-circle, but those will come later.

@FSX404 No probs.There's a lot of love for the 17. Mainly because Gen 1 putting the wind up Gen 3 was legendary. Keep drip feeding these kind of videos out. It's the silence from Devs that annoys the user base. You know this, though, so keep up the great work. Day one purchase for me. 👍

With the energy advantage of the F-1 did you consider trying a vertical rolling scissors to bleed his energy ala Cunningham and "Toon"
1:1 yes, tho even at slower speeds mig can be a challenge to a F-1, it has slow speed wings and is quite stable. In reality you climb and MiG17 cant follow, then you swoop down. But thats a boring 10 min fight. You cant out turn it to get a shooting solution, and 17 cant outclimb you, end up with head to head shots. So to make it interesting you try to have the other guy make a mistake.

MiG-15 and MiG-19 against 17 would be interesting to see
MiG19 has a lot of power, it climbs like crazy (almost accurate in DCS, but just slightly OP), it can just do stitches all day unless you slow it down, similar to the F-5 fight I showed a while ago, basically you just watch it climb and come down. If it turns you have a fight, especially in one circle.

Is it just me? Or was that first fight a total loss for you? You were just lucky he missed. Multiple times.
Yes and no. Majority of pilots would stall the 17 within couple of turns so its a quick win, an experienced pilot would knock you off quick (I was lucky but was also ducking the shots too). Also remember this was showing off some flight touchy dynamics of the MiG17, so its not necessarily indicative of a fight I'd have (its more fun, but when its for the marbles you fly your flight), but it is a situation you can end up in easy.

@@FSX404 yeah the sabre is a clown show of a module but this will be a common matchup in multiplayer.
@@coldclaws2479 US did bring in Sabres for a little bit in Vietnam to try to handle the 17s in turning fights hopping US experience prevails, but quickly realized it better to just retrain the current plane pilots to fight it. In any case if the 17 stays fast it should handle the Sabre in DCS, once you go below 300 kts the Sabres lack of drag can give 86 an advantage. But 17 is made to be accurate, this is something decided to stay true to from the beginning.
If we get MiG-23 that makes the entire "crew" of Constant Peg. Sweet!
hmmm was it the mig 17 we saw briefly in the ED 2024 and beyond video, with the recreation of that famous taped shoot down by an F4 of a North Vietnam Mig 17?
ED likely used a MiG15 or 19, since the 17 3d external model is not ready for ED release quality videos. But 17 was there in spirit 🙏, and we appreciate that they did put that small part in

I think it was Randy Ball, who's team helped us with this 17, tho most help came from Will Ward who is another MiG17 airshow pilot
